Federation Charm in Hunters Hill
24 Jan 2022
Design: SMAC Studio
Location: Newport, Sydney, NSW, Australia
Federation Charm, NSW
This original federation house in Hunters Hill was in need of a makeover to bring it up to date. Observing how the family utilized the current house enabled smac to envision how spaces were being underutilized or how, through design, inhabitants were missing opportunities to engage with the spaces & each other. Shona McElroy of smac describes the home, Federation Charm, as an intentional journey through traditional formalness to whimsical modernity, tied together by subtle threads of design details.
Starting at the front of the house, two large heritage rooms, joined by a ornate archway were unused. They were cut off from the house and never furnished properly. smac studio created an entertainers dream. To commence the journey & keep in theme with the formality of the house, Parisian inspired paneling was added to all the walls of the large sitting & dining rooms. A silver silk rug sits under an original, reupholstered buttoned navy velvet chesterfield sofa, with it’s matching two armchairs done in a tan leather sitting adjacent. Opposite, a light grey wool Jardan “Andy” sofa adds modernity to the group. Two Classicon “Bell” tables are central in the room, mimicking the stained glass windows atop the bench seat & a mix of classic & modern artwork surrounds the room
In the dining room, a full wine wall complete with leather wrapped handles, smokey glass, dark timber & soft backlighting made a feature out of the clients love of wine collecting. Mustard velvet Gubi “Beetle” chairs surround the dark oval Gubi table, which sits atop a midnight blue plush silk rug, the whole room adorned by a hand blown glass pendant.
The house is broken up by a pivotal informal sitting room, where new black paneled glass sliding windows & doors enable the space to be shut off or opened up completely to the kitchen and dining. The existing bookshelf was redesigned to add dimension & interest. Now books &pieces of art sit side by side in protruding boxes & rectangles, with strip lighting to highlight special pieces. Gold mesh paneled timber cupboards hide the electricals, where a Superwhite stone from CDK wraps upward toward the kitchen, forming a beautiful credenza unit that flows seamlessly through to a kitchen bench
The home had an existing 90’s extension that housed the kitchen, laundry & study. The pokey doors on either side of the existing kitchen to the laundry and the butlers pantry made the kitchen feel small and cramped, and the obvious door to the study behind the dining table made the space a thoroughfare instead of a gathering space. The new space is the final stop point of the house, where sunlight fills the modern space and new expanses of sliding glass to replace stunted bi-folds look over the lush garden & pool. A 45 degree angle splay to the bottom of the kitchen island hugs the Gubi stools, and invites the users to take a seat facing the cook who looks out whilst cooking at the flush island cooktop. The laundry is concealed through the hidden butlers pantry, allowing the kitchen to use the full expanse of the wall with a modern matte black finish. Linear lights from overhead highlight the grand scale of the ceiling above.
Where the dining was a thoroughfare, it becomes an intimate, cocooned area, which directly opposes and balances the sleek black and white kitchen with bold greens and light timbers. Another Gubi table & chairs, this time in blonde oak and polypropylene forest green beetles with timber legs, creates a fun visual link to the formal dining area. They sit atop a green wool blend Armadillo rug, all complimented beautifully by a J.R Walker painting hanging in the new seating nook, which was once a cupboard. All this is backed by modern square paneling, another modern link to the formal living, which conceals a secret door to the study, where a new feature window looks over the expanse of the garden, to enhance creativeness within.
The house is wonderous myriad of thought, personalities & subtleties. It is perfectly tailored to living a modern, engaging family life whilst enhancing its periodic charm

Sarah Waller has carved a career designing and building houses for other people, yet a move from the UK to Australia offered her the opportunity to design and build something unique for herself and her family – their own iconic home. Photography by Paul Smith Images.
With her extensive design background and expertise as a licensed builder Sarah embraced the creative freedom to create a home inspired by the simplicity and sophistication of mid-century modern architecture. Intrinsically involved in every step of the process from the design and build, through to the final styling and decorative touches, Sarah’s home pairs beautiful form and function. “To manage the entire process and bring it all together is incredibly satisfying and now we’re living and experiencing the home, you get a true appreciation that beyond its aesthetic qualities it has a wonderful feel. Sometimes I have to pinch myself it’s ours.”
The House Kitchen A restrained palette and clean lines define the minimalist kitchen which pairs functionality with striking sculptural form. Generous island benches in fine matt black laminate and marble-look porcelain, punctuate the open plan layout and reflect the linear monochrome feel throughout.
Kitchen Storage The inner workings of the kitchen are cleverly contained within a deceptively cavernous black box clad in nanotech FENIX, where open shelves, additional bench space and a butler’s sink are convenient yet out of sight.
Luminous Appeal Walls of glass spanning the length of the home, blur the distinction between indoor and outdoor spaces and allow an abundance of natural light to stream through, imbuing warmth and unimpeded views of the verdant surrounds. A mix of concealed task lights and custom designed feature pendants form the layered lighting scheme which creates ambience at night with a flick of a switch. Inside architectural features are beautifully illuminated, while outside soaring coconut palm trees and architectural frangipanis are up-lit amongst the landscape.
Bedroom Enveloped almost entirely in glass, the expansive outlook provides an ever changing view from the master bedroom. “I love that you have all the comforts of indoors, yet you really feel part of the landscape. We wake up with the sun and experience the subtle changes in weather throughout the day.”
Bathroom Indulgent bathing options from the award winning monochrome master bathroom extend to the outside, where a deep free-standing bath secluded by greenery adds to the home’s relaxed holiday feel.
Outdoors A tropical feel pervades the lush landscaping which envelops the house and steps down the tiered block to create a resort-like feel poolside. Simple mass tropical planting with uplit feature trees are the basis of landscape design.
Pool and Cabana Taking style cues from the Modernist Palm Springs pools popular during the ’50s, a similar look is evoked with a streamlined resort style linear pool, offset with a chic cabana furnished with casual pieces ideal for relaxing and soaking up the sweeping views.
The Palette The home’s minimalist appeal is accentuated with a timeless black and white palette inside and out, with texture introduced with plants, the warmth of timber and tactile surfaces such as the white terrazzo floors which flow throughout.
Glasshouse by Sarah Waller Sarah Waller has carved a career designing and building houses for other people, yet a move from the UK to Australia offered her the opportunity to design and build something unique for herself and her family - their own iconic home.

Kyneton House by Edition Office combines brickwork walls with lofted white ceilings
Architecture studio Edition Office has completed a house in the town of Kyneton, Australia, featuring angled ceilings and a palette of textural materials chosen to complement its natural surroundings.
Melbourne-based Edition Office was asked to design a new home for a couple who had chosen to downsize from a much larger rural property.
Above: Edition Office has completed a house in Kyneton. Top image: it features a palette of textural materials
Kyneton House is positioned at the centre of its plot to maximise the surrounding garden, which is planted with trees relocated from the clients' previous home.
The building is oriented to align with the site boundaries on all sides, ensuring straightforward access to the garden and views of the entire site from within.
The property's external envelope combines brick-clad walls with large glazed elements, including sliding doors that open the living spaces up to the outdoors.
It has a pyramidal roof made from corrugated steel
The brick surfaces define the edges of the house as well as the individual rooms. Each element extends inwards to create recesses that enclose functional elements such as the kitchen, study and seating areas.
The pale recycled brick was chosen to reflect the natural tones and textures of the surrounding countryside, as well as the materiality of the town's buildings, which date back to 1850.
Walls are clad in pale recycled brick
The building is topped with a pyramidal roof made from corrugated galvanised steel. Internally, the roof form creates a soaring volume above a datum created by the brick walls and joinery.
"Each room is defined by its own lofted ceiling which creates a sense of inner spatial balance to the continuous framed views to the surrounding gardens," the studio explained.
"These crisp, white ceiling volumes pick up the fluctuating levels of natural daylight, providing the home with a very particular sense of softness in the quality of the light," it added.
A triangular skylight positioned at the peak of the roof above the hall allows natural light to reach the centre of the plan.
Suspended light fixtures accentuate the height of its ceilings
Suspended light fixtures, including a linear pendant above the kitchen island, accentuate the sense of height within the living areas.
The house's interior palette features natural materials and textural surfaces intended to enhance the sense of connection with the outdoors and to reflect the changing seasons.
Tactile surfaces were used throughout the home
"Our ambition for the house is for it to act as a reference point to the passing of time," the studio added. "The internal rooms act as vessels for the changes of light, becoming a canvas for the theatre of change occurring outside."
The recycled brick walls are complemented by concrete floors and wooden surfaces that contrast with the crisp, white lines of the folded ceiling voids.
Brick is teamed with concrete floors and wooden surfaces
Edition Office was named Dezeen's Emerging architect of the year in 2019 for its work and research that foregrounds stories and relationships, whilst investigating material and spatial practice.
The studio's previous projects include a cylindrical wooden pavilion for the National Gallery of Victoria and the refurbishment of a Melbourne apartment that includes full-height curving storage volumes.
The photography is by Ben Hosking.

Darkly Designer Interiors Decked Out In Stone, Marble And Concrete
Three lofty industrial vibe interiors, each filled with darkly designer pieces of furniture and decor that will draw you in and leave you wanting to see more. Raw rooms feature elements of eye-catching rugged stone, expanses of cool concrete, and large installations of dramatic marble. Earthy brown and green plant accents fall into the mix, layering in sophistication over the seriously industrial tone. Massive open plan living spaces and large bedrooms provide generous canvases on which to paint offbeat concepts and experimental layouts. Lighting is hyper-focussed and mood-shaping throughout, from ambient perimeter modules to slick designer pendant lights that range from the simple to the divine.
Designer: Alexandr Kishlari   Visualizer: Alexandr Kishlari   A majestic Bonsai tree leans into the centre of a huge industrial style living room in this 177 square metre home design, located in Chisinau, Moldova. A low-line brown sofa stretches out across the floor by the tree, as though it were a bank of earth from which it grows. A lighter brown ottoman coffee table fills the space in front of the seating, where rugs are scattered around and about.
Mood lighting highlights sharp edges around the room, creating rivers of bright light and falls of dramatic shadow.
A floor lamp illuminates the marble base of the unique sofa design. A matching black marble feature wall floats by its left side.
Stone bookshelves cross the width of the living room. A brown lounge chair and black marble coffee table complete a comfortable reading nook.
A white marble shoe storage volume runs along a concrete passageway, located at one side of the large living room.
The central concrete column in the room is a structural support, but it is also a solid room divider between the lounge and dining room. A black marble dining table stands behind the concrete column, with six brown modern dining chairs lined up along each side. A copper linear bar light shines over the full tabletop.
A bar light of the same design illuminates a black and white marble kitchen island. Three unique peg-like kitchen bar stools are loosely patterned with fiery tones. As we learned in the living room, books are prominent in this house, so in the kitchen an open shelving volume in the base of the island presents an ideal nook for a cookbook collection.
Solid stone sophistication does not stop at the kitchen island. This is a wall to wall marble kitchen, with marble effect drawers, marble countertops and backsplashes, and marble wall shelves.
Even the kitchen sink is a solid marble creation. A copper faucet sits brightly on the ledge of the white and grey veined block.
The kitchen floor tiles lay out diamond patterns to add a homier element.
Marble plinths display artifacts under spotlight, standing to attention against a cool concrete wall.
Raw concrete shapes the grey bedroom decor too.
Flat disc-like bedroom pendant lights hover above the bedside tables, which are a twist on the kitchen bar stools design.
The bed is built from a slab of black marble, with a white marble headboard.
An open plan ensuite bathroom is a triumph of all white marble volumes.
Copper fixtures complete the luxe look.
Designer: Alexandr Kishlari   Visualizer: Alexandr Kishlari   Moving on to Guangzhou, China, our second featured home design has a copper exterior.
The copper coloured elements continue into the interior, where a modern sofa awaits at the bottom of an open sided staircase design.
The living room projector plays on a wall of coppery panels. A rug echoes the russet tones of the wall treatment.
A cherry tree grows in the courtyard.
Greenery contrasts against the rosy hue of the walls.
A slender concrete outdoor dining table makes a sympathetic addition to the grey pebble bedded courtyard.
Concrete dining stools stand permanently in their place.
Frameless glass doors pivot to give entry back into the extraordinary house.
A unique staircase rises to a walkway of copper doors.
There is landing with a home library on the other side.
An open fronted closet system furnishes one entire wall of the industrial bedroom. The array of garments soften the look of the raw room.
Wall to wall windows let the daylight wash in.
Designer: Nazar Tsimbalyuk   Lastly we visit a decidedly plusher industrial style apartment in Melbourne, Australia, measuring in at 180 square metres. Concrete nesting coffee tables are embraced by a softly upholstered sofa design and rippling area rugs. A modern chandelier rain sparkles from the ceiling.
The seating area faces an awesome rugged wall of rock, which undulates in charcoal peaks from the modern fireplace all the way up to the high ceiling line.
Impressive dining room pendant lights form hoops above a dark modern dining set.
The hoop pendants are echoes of a circular cutout in the slatted side of a mezzanine level.
Massive sliding doors reveal a towering library off to the side of the dual story living room.
The kitchen island appears to have been carved straight out of a rockface, before being topped with black concrete. Black kitchen bar stools hang out by its side.
A cool modern staircase design wraps around a zen garden like snake vertebrae.
Sleek grey units form the remainder of the kitchen design, making smooth contrast with the rough rock island.
A grey platform bed is set against a courtyard view in the master bedroom.
Another indoor garden grows by a hanging chair.
The courtyard behind the headboard is actually part of a luxurious bathroom design, with a uniquely beautiful bathtub.

Edwardian Period Jewellery Styles
Edwardian Jewellery Styles
The Edwardian era, just as the Victorian and Georgian eras preceding it, obtained its name from an English monarch named Edward VII who reigned from 1901 to 1910. Edward was a lighthearted and extravagance adoring monarch. Despite the fact that King Edward’s reign lasted for only a decade, the jewellery style that emanated out of this period covers a larger range, beginning with 1890 and finishing with the rise of the World War 1 in 1914, which brought about the demise of the Edwardian Period. The influence of Edward in the society begun when he got wedded to a Danish princess named Alexandra, and they fixed the guidelines for fashion and style. Edward was well known for being a gambler and a playboy. After his induction as the king, he encircled himself with social plutocrats and usually spends most of his time involving himself in numerous social endeavors. To show class and fortune, jewelry is one of the materials utilized by the considerably well-off class of the society. The time period of Edwardian jewellery is majorly identified by the utilization of white-colored metal, called platinum to make beautiful lace-like airy patterns and usually incorporating partial or total refined white palette of pearls, gemstones, or coloured stone accented diamonds in rings, ear-rings, bracelets, and necklaces of the time. The Edwardian period was in existence with the Arts and Crafts period of time, as well as the Art Nouveau time period, but delivers a much more conventional and restrained style of jewellery. Brand-new innovations in the technology of cutting gemstones were really helping to announce the Edwardian style by producing a cut of a precise round outline, known as a transitional spherical brilliant cut or Old European cut. The new wealth acquired by the upper middle class and stability of this point in history assisted to promote the luxury of this time.Pastel soft fabrics were laced with haute couture and this recently introduced jewellery produced from platinum suited it consummately. Diamond and platinum brooches complimented the style and smaller brooches were worn in large numbers. The most preferred motifs used were circles, bows, swags, and garlands; all put to use in a delicate lacy design. Linear bar brooches with diamonds and colorful gemstones encircled the neckline at several strategic areas. Lozenge-shaped and round brooches, sometimes having a colored stone in the center, were dotted everywhere with brilliant platinum and diamonds set in light. Bows were manufactured in an abundant proportion than they had ever been.
At the start of the century, earrings were simple gemstone studs but were soon substituted by fragile openwork designs that blended well with the design trend of the time period. Very long glittering earrings with articulated center stones and smaller garland-style wreaths started to trend amidst the fashion conscious women of the age. Additionally, fabric-like gossamer creations with subtle dangles suspended from decorated ear hooks took various shapes. All the aspects of the Edwardian period were present which includes diamonds, platinum openwork, and mill graining. With the earrings created to sway and glide with the lighter flowing clothes, Edwardian ear-rings are important and iconic factors that defined the existence of the time period.
Laurel wreaths, garlands, and ribbons, bow knots, tassels in addition to lace were embroidered with a completely new lightness as a result of the developments made in the manufacturing of platinum. Early works performed on platinum were backed with gold as well as silver.
