Twinkump Linkdump

I'm on a 20+ city book tour for my new novel PICKS AND SHOVELS. Catch me in SAN DIEGO at MYSTERIOUS GALAXY next MONDAY (Mar 24), and in CHICAGO with PETER SAGAL on Apr 2. More tour dates here.
I have an excellent excuse for this week's linkdump: I'm in Germany, but I'm supposed to be in LA, and I'm not, because London Heathrow shut down due to a power-station fire, which meant I spent all day yesterday running around like a headless chicken, trying to get home in time for my gig in San Diego on Monday (don't worry, I sorted it):
https://www.mystgalaxy.com/32425Doctorow
Therefore, this is 30th linkdump, in which I collect the assorted links that didn't make it into this week's newsletters. Here are the other 29:
https://pluralistic.net/tag/linkdump/
I always like to start and end these 'dumps with some good news, which isn't easy in these absolutely terrifying times. But there is some good news: Wil Wheaton has announced his new podcast, a successor of sorts to the LeVar Burton Reads podcast. It's called "It's Storytime" and it features Wil reading his favorite stories handpicked from science fiction magazines, including On Spec, the magazine that bought my very first published story (I was 16, it ran in their special youth issue, it wasn't very good, but boy did it mean a lot to me):
https://wilwheaton.net/podcast/
Here's some more good news: a court has found (again!) that works created by AI are not eligible for copyright. This is the very best possible outcome for people worried about creators' rights in the age of AI, because if our bosses can't copyright the botshit that comes out of the "AI" systems trained on our work, then they will pay us:
https://www.yahoo.com/news/us-appeals-court-rejects-copyrights-171203999.html
Our bosses hate paying us, but they hate the idea of not being able to stop people from copying their entertainment products so! much! more! It's that simple:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/20/everything-made-by-an-ai-is-in-the-public-domain/
This outcome is so much better than the idea that AI training isn't fair use – an idea that threatens the existence of search engines, archiving, computational linguistics, and other clearly beneficial activities. Worse than that, though: if we create a new copyright that allows creators to prevent others from scraping and analyzing their works, our bosses will immediately alter their non-negotiable boilerplate contracts to demand that we assign them this right. That will allow them to warehouse huge troves of copyrighted material that they will sell to AI companies who will train models designed to put us on the breadline (see above, re: our bosses hate paying us):

The rights of archivists grow more urgent by the day, as the Trump regime lays waste to billions of dollars worth of government materials that were produced at public expense, deleting decades of scientific, scholarly, historical and technical materials. This is the kind of thing you might expect the National Archive or the Library of Congress to take care of, but they're being chucked into the meat-grinder as well.
To make things even worse, Trump and Musk have laid waste to the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a tiny, vital agency that provides funding to libraries, archives and museums across the country. Evan Robb writes about all the ways the IMLS supports the public in his state of Washington:
Technology support. Last-mile broadband connection, network support, hardware, etc. Assistance with the confusing e-rate program for reduced Internet pricing for libraries.
Coordinated group purchase of e-books, e-audiobooks, scholarly research databases, etc.
Library services for the blind and print-disabled.
Libraries in state prisons, juvenile detention centers, and psychiatric institutions.
Digitization of, and access to, historical resources (e.g., newspapers, government records, documents, photos, film, audio, etc.).
Literacy programming and support for youth services at libraries.
The entire IMLS budget over the next 10 years rounds to zero when compared to the US federal budget – and yet, by gutting it, DOGE is amputating significant parts of the country's systems that promote literacy; critical thinking; and universal access to networks, media and ideas. Put it that way, and it's not hard to see why they hate it so.
Trying to figure out what Trump is up to is (deliberately) confusing, because Trump and Musk are pursuing a chaotic agenda that is designed to keep their foes off-balance:
https://www.wired.com/story/elon-musk-donald-trump-chaos/
But as Hamilton Nolan writes, there's a way to cut through the chaos and make sense of it all. The problem is that there are a handful of billionaires who have so much money that when they choose chaos, we all have to live with it:
The significant thing about the way that Elon Musk is presently dismantling our government is not the existence of his own political delusions, or his own self-interested quest to privatize public functions, or his own misreading of economics; it is the fact that he is able to do it. And he is able to do it because he has several hundred billion dollars. If he did not have several hundred billion dollars he would just be another idiot with bad opinions. Because he has several hundred billion dollars his bad opinions are now our collective lived experience.
https://www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/the-underlying-problem
We actually have a body of law designed to prevent this from happening. It's called "antitrust" and 40 years ago, Jimmy Carter decided to follow the advice of some of history's dumbest economists who said that fighting monopolies made the economy "inefficient." Every president since, up to – but not including – Biden, did even more to encourage monopolization and the immense riches it creates for a tiny number of greedy bastards.
But Biden changed that. Thanks to the "Unity Taskforce" that divided up the presidential appointments between the Democrats' corporate wing and the Warren/Sanders wing, Biden appointed some of the most committed, effective trustbusters we'd seen for generations:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/10/18/administrative-competence/#i-know-stuff
After Trump's election, there was some room for hope that Trump's FTC would continue to pursue at least some of the anti-monopoly work of the Biden years. After all, there's a sizable faction within the MAGA movement that hates (some) monopolies:
https://pluralistic.net/2025/01/24/enforcement-priorities/#enemies-lists
But last week, Trump claimed to have illegally fired the two Democratic commissioners on the FTC: Alvaro Bedoya and Rebecca Slaughter. I stan both of these commissioners, hard. When they were at the height of their powers in the Biden years, I had the incredible, disorienting experience of getting out of bed, checking the headlines, and feeling very good about what the government had just done.
Trump isn't legally allowed to fire Bedoya and Slaughter. Perhaps he's just picking this fight as part of his chaos agenda (see above). But there are some other pretty good theories about what this is setting up. In his BIG newsletter, Matt Stoller proposes that Trump is using this case as a wedge, trying to set a precedent that would let him fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell:
https://www.thebignewsletter.com/p/why-trump-tried-to-fire-federal-trade
But perhaps there's more to it. Stoller just had Commissioner Bedoya on Organized Money, the podcast he co-hosts with David Dayen, and Bedoya pointed out that if Trump can fire Democratic commissioners, he can also fire Republican commissioners. That means that if he cuts a shady deal with, say, Jeff Bezos, he can order the FTC to drop its case against Amazon and fire the Republicans on the commission if they don't frog when he jumps:
https://www.organizedmoney.fm/p/trumps-showdown-at-the-ftc-with-commissioner
(By the way, Organized Money is a fantastic podcast, notwithstanding the fact that they put me on the show last week:)
https://audio.buzzsprout.com/6f5ly01qcx6ijokbvoamr794ht81
The future that our plutocrat overlords are grasping for is indeed a terrible one. You can see its shape in the fantasies of "liberatarian exit" – the seasteads, free states, and other assorted attempts to build anarcho-capitalist lawless lands where you can sell yourself into slavery, or just sell your kidneys. The best nonfiction book on libertarian exit is Raymond Criab's 2022 "Adventure Capitalism," a brilliant, darkly hilarious and chilling history of every time a group of people have tried to found a nation based on elevating selfishness to a virtue:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/06/14/this-way-to-the-egress/#terra-nullius
If Craib's book is the best nonfiction volume on the subject of libertarian exit, then Naomi Kritzer's super 2023 novel Liberty's Daughter is the best novel about life in a libertopia – a young adult novel about a girl growing up in the hell that would be life with a Heinlein-type dad:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/11/21/podkaynes-dad-was-a-dick/#age-of-consent
But now this canon has a third volume, a piece of design fiction from Atelier Van Lieshout called "Slave City," which specs out an arcology populated with 200,000 inhabitants whose "very rational, efficient and profitable" arrangements produce €7b/year in profit:
https://www.archdaily.com/30114/slave-city-atelier-van-lieshout
This economic miracle is created by the residents' "voluntary" opt-in to a day consisting of 7h in an office, 7h toiling in the fields, 7h of sleep, and 3h for "leisure" (e.g. hanging out at "The Mall," a 24/7, 26-storey " boundless consumer paradise"). Slaves who wish to better themselves can attend either Female Slave University or Male Slave University (no gender controversy in Slave City!), which run 24/7, with 7 hours of study, 7 hours of upkeep and maintenance on the facility, 7h of sleep, and, of course, 3h of "leisure."
The field of design fiction is a weird and fertile one. In his traditional closing keynote for this year's SXSW Interactive festival, Bruce Sterling opens with a little potted history of the field since it was coined by Julian Bleeker:
https://bruces.medium.com/how-to-rebuild-an-imaginary-future-2025-0b14e511e7b6
Then Bruce moves on to his own latest design fiction project, an automated poetry machine called the Versificatore first described by Primo Levi in an odd piece of science fiction written for a newspaper. The Versificatore was then adapted to the screen in 1971, for an episode of an Italian sf TV show based on Levi's fiction:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tva-D_8b8-E
And now Sterling has built a Versificatore. The keynote is a sterlingian delight – as all of his SXSW closers are. It's a hymn to the value of "imaginary futures" and an instruction manual for recovering them. It could not be more timely.
Sterling's imaginary futures would be a good upbeat note to end this 'dump with, but I've got a real future that's just as inspiring to close us out with: the EU has found Apple guilty of monopolizing the interfaces to its devices and have ordered the company to open them up for interoperability, so that other manufacturers – European manufacturers! – can make fully interoperable gadgets that are first-class citizens of Apple's "ecosystem":
https://www.reuters.com/technology/apple-ordered-by-eu-antitrust-regulators-open-up-rivals-2025-03-19/
It's a good reminder that as America crumbles, there are still places left in the world with competent governments that want to help the people they represent thrive and prosper. As the Prophet Gibson tells us, "the future is here, it's just not evenly distributed." Let's hope that the EU is living in America's future, and not the other way around.

Last Monday of the Week 2025-03-31
Who up widening they gyre
Listening: New release from Chamber Mage, the album is "By Light of Emerald Gods".
Chamber Mage has until pretty recently been one of those bands where the main way you could hear them is "going to see them in Denver or its surrounds" and I heard about them from a guy.
This is very like. Classic Fantasy Themed Metal that is done technically well.
Watching: Finished S3 of the Clone Wars. I think it is really hitting its stride, even the worse episodes here aren't that bad.
From A More Civilized Age I do think part of why this avoids so much kids-show-itis is the surprisingly heavy presence of both George Lucas and Filoni in the room who insist on putting in references to the most bloody genres of movies they can find.
Reading: Blog time
Karl Guttag is a display industries guy who now writes a very very detailed blog on display technologies. I don't know enough to know if he's a crank but he seems good and talks about displays in a way that sort of looks beyond basic numbers and specs and into applications and limitations in a very interesting way. This is mostly downstream of me trying to figure out what the hell Birdbath Optics are.
Making: Busy fucking with my PC and desk in an attempt to better integrate this new monitor, which is all unfortunately for naught because I've discovered some glitches with the display that necessitates retuning it.
Playing: Almost through Cyberpunk. Close to the end of the Dogtown Quest, about to put Songbird on a shuttle to the moon but, aforementioned PC fuckery.
Tools and Equipment: If you need to copy a lot of files, especially lots of small files, across local storage or high speed network links, rclone is often a good choice for its ability to do clever threaded copies, handle listing more rapidly, and efficiently manage access to fast storage.

I Can Fix That
This little fic is for my @mythicalsecretsanta @link-sans-specs ❤️ I so hope you enjoy it! Merry Christmas
Summary: Rhett is smitten with the new man who works in the town library and offers his help to fix a few things.
Author Notes: I've had this idea sitting in the back of my mind for a while now and I'm glad I finally got around to writing it. It's based off Sam and Kate's relationship in Holes... it literally lives rent free in my head.
“I can fix that.” Rhett hears himself say to the stranger that's currently on the floor of the town library.
The man looks up from where he's crouched down next to a book cart and Rhett is sure he's never seen eyes that shade of blue before. He's still staring in awe when he realizes that the man is speaking to him.
“Sorry,” Rhett shakes his head to clear it of any inappropriate thoughts. “What was that?”
“Could you really fix it?” the man stands up, smoothing down the front of his trousers.
“Y - yeah,” Rhett clears his throat to try and regain control of his voice. “I have some tools in my bag outside. Wouldn't take long at all.”
“That - that would be great. Thank you.”
Rhett drops the books he was carrying on the table and quickly walks outside to retrieve his things.
He's back quickly and sets to work on the broken wheel.
“I, uh, I'm Lincoln, by the way.” The man says as he keeps a close eye on Rhett working.
“Rhett,” he introduces himself, reaching a hand up to shake the other man's. He sees the dirt smeared all over it and quickly withdraws it as Lincoln is reaching out. “Sorry, my hands are always dirty these days.” He chuckles a little and goes back to fixing the wheel, changing the subject. “So, are you the one replacing Ms. Cartwright?”
“Yes - yeah. That's me.” Rhett swears he hears the smile in his voice even though he can't currently see his face.
“Well, welcome to town. We're glad to have you.” Rhett says, perhaps a little too eager.
“Thank you. Do you come to the library often?”
“I do. Usually try to hit it up when I come into town… ‘bout every other week to get supplies for the farm.”
“Good to know. Did you like Ms. Cartwright?”
“Of course, when she wasn't getting on to me ‘bout keeping the books for too long or bringing them back dirty.” That makes Lincoln laugh and Rhett's pretty sure he would do anything to hear that sound over and over again.
“So, you have your own farm?”
Rhett let's out a dry chuckle, “My father does - I just work it.”
Lincoln follows Rhett with a little laugh of his own, almost as if he understands - maybe even also has a strained relationship with his own father.
“I didn't used to come by at all,” Rhett starts, needing to fill the short bout of silence for his own comfort; because if he starts thinking about things the two of them may have in common, the chances it could grow into a friendship… Rhett has to concentrate to ease the blush he knows is creeping up his neck right about now. “My neighbor, Ms. Ruby, she can't make the journey to town anymore. I help her out when I can and she loves to read. So, I figured I may as well get myself something when I come.”
Rhett tightens the last bolt on the wheel and gives it a spin for good measure. After it makes the circle, Rhett nods his head at his handiwork and claps his hands together. “I think that should hold it together just fine.”
“Oh, goodness. Thank you so much!” Lincoln says, grabbing the handle and giving it a push himself. When it rolls fine he turns his attention back to Rhett. “That's very nice of you - to do that for your neighbor, I mean.”
“Well, after she lost Ed - I like to keep a close eye on her; just to make sure she's taken care o –”
They’re interrupted by the ring of the bell that sits over the door. Both of their attention drawn to the group of ladies entering the library.
“Well, I'll be! If it ain't Rhett McLaughlin. What on Earth are you doing at the library?” Their leader, Savannah, called out.
Rhett held back the eye roll, as this wasn't the first time she's tried to gain his attention. “I was just fixing the cart wheel for Mr. —” Rhett looked back to the other man, not knowing him beyond ‘Lincoln’.
“Neal. Lincoln Neal.”
Rhett nodded, giving Link a small smile and turning to pack away his tools. “Since that's done - I guess I'll be taking my books and bein’ on my way.”
Not that he didn't want to stay and talk to Mr. Lincoln Neal, he very much did. But, he knew Savannah would think he was staying for her and he's positive he couldn't handle any more of her undivided attention.
“Oh, okay. Can I get these checked out for you?” Lincoln grabbed the stack Rhett had discarded earlier to grab his tools.
“Yes, please.” Rhett followed him to the desk toward the front of the library, leaving the gaggle of girls to themselves. “Thank you, Mr. Neal.”
“You can call me Link.” He said, almost shyly and Rhett thinks he sees his cheeks tint a pretty rose color.
Rhett grabbed the books that Link held out to him. “Well, Link, you have a good afternoon.”
—
Link has kept an embarrassingly close eye out for the tall farmer during the last week. Rhett had said that he only made it to town every other week but he couldn't stop himself from watching outside for the handsome man that stood a head taller than everyone else.
Link knows better than to do this - latch on to some stranger that he doesn't even know and make it out to be something more than it is. But, Rhett just seems like such a genuine man and Link couldn't help but think that maybe they could be friends.
His short time in the new town has been anything but easy. Moving to some place where he didn't know a single person was supposed to be freeing. Turns out - it's also very stressful.
Link is walking across the street when he hears that laugh; he almost pulls a muscle in his neck trying to find the location of it. His eyes finally settle on the messy blonde hair and freckled skin coming out of the post office.
He knows he's probably being way too eager, maybe even a little creepy - but he makes a bee line for him but hoping, somehow, he can manage a greeting that's casual.
“Rhett!” He says, hardly able to hear the squeak in his own voice. “How are you today? I wasn't sure when I would be seeing you again.”
Rhett turns quickly at the sound of his name and Link is not disappointed when his face splits into a grin. “Well, hi there, Link! I can't complain - ‘specially since running into you.”
Link feels the blush instantly, knowing Rhett will be able to see it too but hoping he won't call attention to it. “W - will you be stopping by the library today?”
“I did plan on it.” Rhett says with a sly smile. “I hope that's okay.”
“Yes, yes, of course. I was actually going to see if I could bother you to fix a shelf that's come off the wall.” Before Link can offer to pay him for his services, Rhett is agreeing, maybe Rhett is a little eager too. That thought makes his stomach feel all fuzzy.
“Absolutley, you could!” Link isn't sure how it's possible but his smile gets bigger. “I have a couple of more stops to make and I'll head over that way.”
Link nods his head, unable to stop the huge smile gracing his own face. “That sounds perfect. Thank you.”
—
Rhett was practically giddy the rest of the morning, going through all his usual stops but with a bit more pep in his step. Now, he is finally walking up the old wooden steps and opening the familiar door.
He doesn't hear or see anyone so he speaks up in the silent space, “Link? Are you in here?”
He hears some fumbling coming from the back room and then a voice sounding out too. “I'm here. Be right out.” Rhett follows the noise and Link emerges from the small door. “Thank you so much again for helping me out with this. I'm just all thumbs when it comes to this kind of work.”
“It's really no trouble.” Rhett insists, waving his hand. “What exactly needs fixing?”
“Oh, it's right over here.” Link gestures with his hand and Rhett follows him around a shelf to the back wall. “The shelf just kind of buckled when I started putting books back on it.”
Rhett immediately starts to work, taking a closer look at the shelf. After a moment, Link asks, “Do you think you can fix it?”
“Oh, yeah. I can fix that.” Rhett says, maybe a little more sure of himself than he needs to be. “Looks like I can put a couple of nails in and it will be good as new, the wood's not rotten or anything.”
“That's great. I'd be more than happy to pay you for all the trouble –”
“Nonsense,” Rhett cuts him off before he can finish the sentence. “I’m glad I could be of help.”
Rhett sets to work, taking the old nails out, Link's attention is pulled away from Rhett when he hears the door open, he turns back to him with an apologetic look, “Sorry, let me go and tend to them. Will you be okay for a moment?”
“Absolutely. Go ahead.”
Rhett zones out for a bit, doing what he needs to do to get the shelf ready to be installed while Link is tending to the other patrons. He hits a stopping point, needing an extra set of hands to finish it up.
He dusts his hands off and makes his way down to the end of the aisle. Link is squatting down talking with a child, little William, Mrs. Doris’ grandson.
“Well, I’ll tell you what, you can keep that book for an extra week but when you bring it back, we can read it together, cause I want to know what happens, okay?”
The little boy giggles and gives Link a hug, which seems to take him by surprise but he soon leans into it and wraps his own arms around the boy. Rhett chuckles to himself at the scene and gets back to work.
He hears the bell above the door ring once again and Link's footsteps coming back toward him.
“Sorry about that.” Link starts, but Rhett is already waving him off.
“No problem at all.” Rhett says, holding up the shelf, “I could use your help for a moment.”
“Oh, okay.” Link says eagerly, stepping toward Rhett. “What can I do?”
“I just need another set of hands to hold the shelf up so I can hammer it in.”
“Oh, okay.” Link stands close to Rhett with his hands out. “Just tell me what to do.”
Rhett holds the board out, instructing Link on how to hold it properly and Rhett goes to nail it into the wall.
The both of them are pressed close together, Rhett hammering the nails while Link is trying to keep the shelf in the same spot that Rhett instructed. They are so close, breathing the same air, Rhett inhaling the scent of cloves and freshly baked bread. Rhett tries to concentrate on the task at hand but he’s getting very close to losing his cool.
He finally manages to get finished but can't seem to pull himself away from the other man.
“I, uh,” Rhett starts. “I think that should do it.”
Link isn’t backing away either, he just keeps his impossibly blue eyes locked on Rhett’s. “Y – yeah, I think so.”
They are both startled apart by the ring of the bell and Rhett springs away from Link quickly, not knowing what exactly he was thinking, letting himself get caught up in the moment.
He clears his throat, putting even more distance between them. “Uh, you better… see who that is.” Rhett moves out of the way, extending his arm to let Link pass. Link hesitates but eventually bows his head and goes toward the entrance.
Once he is out of sight and greeting the patrons that just came in, Rhett hurries and packs his things into his small toolbox.
He doesn’t think much after Link is no longer standing there, he only gets his things and heads out the door. He sure he hears Link call his name but he can't be bothered to stop.
—
A couple of hours later, Link is finally closing up shop on the library. He's trying to balance the large basket of food that Mrs. Sutton dropped off to welcome him to town. He's going to have to push his bike home since he can't carry everything and steer. He isn't looking forward to the drive; it will give him plenty of time to think about what happened today.
He can't get the way Rhett looked at him out of his mind. No wonder the man practically ran away from him. They were incredibly close and Link was having a hard time keeping his breathing under control. Rhett's eyes seemed to be staring right into his soul and his cheeks were the prettiest shade of pink.
He's usually really good at keeping that side of himself hidden, now he's afraid he's messed up and may have to move towns again just to be safe. He couldn't believe he was so stupid.
He hears horse hooves coming up behind him and is surprised when someone calls out his name.
“Link,” he hears again and turns around to be greeted with Rhett galloping up on a large horse.
Link flinches back, not knowing exactly what the other man has planned but he has a hard time believing Rhett would hurt him.
He's off the horse and walking up to Link slowly. A sad smile gracing his face. “Link, I'm glad I caught you.”
“Rhett,” Link stumbles over his words. “W-what are you doing here?”
“Listen,”Rhett gets closer, crowding into Link's space. “I'm sorry about earlier. I - I shouldn't have just ran out on you. I just –” he trails off, his eyes glued to the ground like the words he is searching for are written in the dirt below their feet.
Link understands without Rhett needing to say more. He says as much and Rhett nods, his smile still faltering but at least it's reaching his eyes.
“Are you headed home?” He asks, changing the subject.
“Umm, yeah. Just got the library locked up for the night.”
“Would you… like some company?” Rhett asks almost shyly, reaching up with a big hand and rubbing the back of his neck.
Link can't hide the shock on his face but agrees despite the swarm of butterflies he feels in his gut, or maybe it's because of them. “That would be nice.”
“Can I hold something for you?” Rhett asks as he takes the reins of his horse.
Link gives over the basket of food so he can free up his hands to push his bike. They are walking close, Link is afraid Rhett can hear the thump of his heart. “Who's this?” He asks when he can't stand the silence between them anymore.
“Oh, this is Barbara.” He says, reaching up and giving her a rub on the nose. “I've had her since I was young, we basically grew up together on the farm.”
“That's sweet.” He smiles, watching the fond smile spread across Rhett's face as he looks at the horse.
They talk the whole way to Link's small cottage just outside of town. The conversation flows easily and before Link knows it, they are at his porch and the sky has turned a beautiful pink color as the sun sets.
It seems they are both reluctant to end their time together, so Link conjures up all the courage he can muster and asks, “Um, Mrs. Sutton gave me this enormous basket of food and there's no way I could possibly eat all of it. Would you want to come inside? I don't have anyone to share it with.”
Rhett hasn't stopped smiling since Link started talking, which Link can only assume is a good thing. He tries not to jump for joy when Rhett says with a sly smile, “Yeah – I can fix that.”

👆GERA GERA PO! GERA GERA PO!👇
(Need a plain-text version with the IDs out of the ALT text for this post? Here! (Link)! Every other post has it automatically out of the ALT text and has no formatting unless provided with PTs as well.)
(REQUESTS OPEN!)
Welcome to the Yo-kai World! You may have arrived via a Mirapo or the Hexpress, maybe you even came by a Blasters Mobile. Whatever the way is, you’re in the world of Yo-kai now! Want any refreshments? Maybe some mischief? Well, why not allow me to give you a tour, considering you may never get out of here?
👅 WHO ARE YOU? 🦷
I guess I didn’t introduce myself!
Hello! I’m the owner of @the-cookie-jar-system and @cookiejarids. This is my Yo-kai Watch MOGAI blog! I usually go by Sans or Charlie or my in-system name, Algae, however here you can also call me Kyubi or Sliptongue! Sliptongue is my Yokai Watch OC, when you are inspirited by it, it feels like your whole personality becomes just talking and talking, you also often find yourself drooling for some reason…
Sliptongue will often be the persona I play when answering on this blog, it is together with a version of Kyubi and I would appreciate that being respected. I often draw for this blog, however my signature will just be Cookie Jar, as it’s simpler to share between blogs, and doesn’t out me as a system for people I don’t want knowing :)
My pronouns are he/it/masculine neos, I am a butch trans non-binary man who is intersex and very, very white (aka. Will not make BIPOC terms because I have no place, happily will help people with templates) and my orientations aren’t really important here. I am aro-spec, ace-spec and apl-spec, as well as hypersexual for clarity’s sake however. I struggle with PTSD, BPD, DID, SAD, ADHD, autism and schizophrenia, I may make terms in relation to these as well as my physical disabilities. I am a spoonie.
One of my posts seems inaccessible and / or don’t have an accessible version of a post (like this pinned’s other version?). Shoot me an ask! Made a mistake with a Yo-kai’s lore? Shoot me an ask! Wanna chat? Shoot me an ask! Want a certain post to come out faster or a specific variation (for example, x yokai but feminine based?)? Shoot me an ask! I don’t bite (despite all my teeth), and I genuinely love engaging with people!
Come to this section for the to-do list, or boundaries on the usage of Yokaian? We’ll get there! Can’t have you skipping the tour now? What if you get lost?
🍴HUNGRY PASS! 🎂
You must be hungry after all of your travelling, what do we hope to provide?
Yokaian terms for every Yokai and it’s recoloured versions!
Yokaian terms for every Yokai in-game item!
Yokaian terms for every Yokai in-game location!
Yokaian terms for every Yokai Watch/Medallium!
Yokaian terms for every Yokai character!
Yokaian terms for every game/anime/movie!
Yokaian terms for every medal! Toy and game-wise!
Yokaian terms for FAKE Yokai, like Sliptongue! (Request your OC! I will do it!)
Yokaian terms for alternated Yokai, like White Yokai, Shadow Yokai, etc.!
Yokaian terms for forms of Yokai, like Human Kyubi, Human Komasan, or different Boss Phases!
Requested Yokaian variations, like multiple traits together with a Yo-kai or something of similar vain, can be incredibly hyper-specific!
And MORE!
A quick boundary about Yokaian terms is do not make them without asking me! Seriously! Don’t! (It is fine to make Yokai genders of course, not Yokaian with my flag templates or art without asking!)
I follow the Yokai World Medallium, as it’s the biggest one I could find, realised I’ve missed one? Shoot me an ask!
🕳️ INFINITE TUNNEL! 🚇
Oh, it seems maybe we won’t get along? Maybe you should try and find the answer in here.
Before you follow me, understand;
I don’t use tone tags. Not even if you ask, I don’t understand or remember, you can use them on me, but I will most likely ignore them.
I don’t engage in shipcourse (my stance is I don’t care), syscourse (my stance is I don’t know enough) or the like. I do not want radqueers to interact with me in any way except using my terms and liking/reblogging. Do not send me asks. Please.
If you are requesting from me, please be polite. Here is a template if you struggle; “Hi! May I please have [insert request], thank you!” Be aware I reserve the right to decline.
I am a traumagenic system that rarely switches, but I struggle with delusions and often find myself thinking I’m a different alter, don’t fakeclaim or instant block.
People in my DNI/BYF can use my terms, so do not recoin them.
I swear actively, I do not tag it.
I will block a motherfucker.
You must tell me before putting my terms on a wiki, for each individual term, thank you. If not done, I will find a way to take them down.
Enjoy your stay here in the Yo-kai World! You want to see what we are working on in Hell’s Kitchen, I hear? Well, of course~
The Menu (To-Do List) (link) is right here!

Love your thoughts about Law and his trauma and totally agree ♥️. Do you think he would benefit from a loving partner or does his trauma stopp him from thinking about love and romance?
I have linked you to a similar ask on another blog that pretty much summarizes my opinion on this topic since I highly doubt I can explain it as eloquently as this person. I highly recommend this blog:
@l-in-the-light which was amazing One Piece meta in general but I find their posts about Law particularly good.
Having said that, I'm not an expert on neither Law or One Piece meta I've just jumped back to One Piece (I stopped watching around 2009-2010) during 2022 so...Literally I'm just another Law/Heart Pirates/Cora-san fan in this little corner of the internet.
Having said that...I'm a person on the aroace spectrum that headcanons Law as also on the aroace spectrum. In fact, I have written a fic headcannoning Law as aroace spec. That is to say that my answer to this question will be the type of answer an aroace person would answer. I do not think any trauma stops anyone about thinking about one thing or the other. But hey I also think that people thinking that romance and love can fix trauma do not understand how PTSD works and that's fine it is a complex subject. Though admitedly, this is fiction and Law is a fictional character and anyone might have any type of headcanon about him, free country.
At the same time I think people often forget the most relevant emotional repercussion of Law's trauma is his political position which for me it seems, is more important for him than any possibility of a romantic entanglement. His interpersonal relationships are profoundly influenced by his political thoughts. Including Cora-san. He has surrounded himself with people who have also been fucked by the World Government or by structures such as toxic biological family (it is the case of Shachi) any type of specism (Bepo) or slavery (Jean Bart). This people get him right? He is for sure antisystem and anti imperialist and literally wants to blow up the system. So I think those relationships would be more important for him than thinking about romantic love. I have to say that for me the fact that he was unaffected by, for instance, Boa Hancock and has never shown any romantic interest is quite acearo coded to me. And as the post of @l-in-the-light says I think what he truly values is his platonic bonds. Again I truly recommend the post @l-in-the-light made about this because it is beautifully expressed. Having said that I'm super surprised that my post to the void is being reblogued. Jeezzz to many emotions on one day! Thanks for your ask and sorry for not being of much help!
#trafalgar law#trafalgar law meta#one piece meta#I can't believe people are literally rebloguing my shitty thoughts to the void#2025 is this even real?#thanks for the ask!

Different anon, but talking of Norway and queer graphic novels, we have:
https://booksfromnorway.com/books/2050-the-eye-of-the-dragon-betrayed
Where the main character is non-binary (like the creator, @cha-c-san) and they fall in love with a buff woman who hasn't fallen in love with men before, so they are afraid she won't fall in love them (spoiler: but she does). There's also a character who is poly pan, he has both a female and a male love interest, and there's a gay couple who have a son. And there's some het couples too that aren't treated as superior nor horrible because they are het, all the couples are treated just as natural. I hope there'll be some canon a-spec people too.
I'm a repulsed aroace but none of the romances were repulsing to me personally if any other repulsed aros, aces, aroace, or traumatized think it looks interesting but are afraid it'll be too much.
https://booksfromnorway.com/books/2421-wild-paws-the-fox-farm
Is made by a trans man. I haven't read it yet as the demographic seems a little too young for me, but apparently it talks about serious topics like anxiety and the fur trade.
https://booksfromnorway.com/books/2552-valiant
Haven't read it yet either, *goes to book store, they only have it that I'm interested in, feels dumb if I just buy one thing due to social anxiety, goes to another bookstore, they have another book I'm interested in but not it, repeat*. But the author (I do not know about the artist) is bi. I don't know if this'll be presented in the books, but the main character is modelled and named after the author.
Bonus, ordinary novels:
https://www.gyldendal.no/barneboeker/9-13-aar/phenomena-1-profetiens-utvalgte/p-10003080-no/
The girl main character (the main characters are twins, a girl and a boy) is canonically (although the author didn't specify it before 2022) an aroace lesbian! The first edition of book 1 came out in 2002! The years where most of what a female character was, was dreaming about having a boyfriend! Isn't that just amazing?!
https://booksfromnorway.com/books/1634-benny-goes-berserk
Not read it yet but it's a coming of age story about a gay boy, and while the other kids are figuring out themselves, he already knows and is infuriated by this.
I don't know if there's others, but Seven Seas Entertainment has a monthly survey where you can suggest stories, if enough suggest them they'll hopefully licence it.
Thank you so much! Fun fact, my wife is Norwegian, so this list is very useful to me personally as well!
For those interested:

KH Spec: Princesses of Light as Stars, part 2.
Part 1 went into the symbolism of stars within the KH series, specifically with respect to Paopu Fruit. It also began establishing the concept of Kairi as a "Star" in contrast to Riku's being a "Sun": astronomically identical, symbolically referential but ultimately distinct. Each "Sun" is a "Star" but each World, each Heart has its own personal "Sun": this is a concept I can see easily worked into the KH series as Kairi begins her own Coming of Age arc, as Sora struggles to remember his "Light", as CinderRiku reenacts The Objectively Best Direct-to-Video Disney Film.
While a later post will go into the Literal Instances of Kairi being a Star, and the metaphysics of "Starhood" within the KH setting, this post will continue with the Symbolism of Stars as pertaining to the Other Original Princesses.
The Original Seven
Kairi's co-stars in KH1 were, in order of appearance: Snow White (Tutorial/Sora's Dive to Heart), Cinderella (DtH), Aurora (DtH), Belle (DtH), Alice (Wonderland) & Jasmine (Agrabah).
While Kairi first appears in KH1's opening cutscene and in the Destiny Islands, her next physical appearance is in Neverland.
So, let us begin with the first chronogical Disney Princesses: Snow White, Cinderella & Aurora.
The Founding Three (+ Pinnochio)
While she does not have as much direct star imagery associated with her, Snow White is very much connected to themes that Disney (& the KH series) would retroactively connect to her: wishes, dreams & true love.
Snow White
Snow White's first appearance has her singing to her reflection in a wishing well (Disney would later establish that wishes could be made on stars in their next animated film, Pinnochio). The young princess wishes to have someone who loves her, someone she can love in turn.
Cue Appearance of an Anonymous, Eavesdropping Prince (this ended up becoming a Pattern, carried even into KH sans musical number).
Snow White later falls into a death-like sleep, a tradition passed on to Aurora & Sora. She is awakened by the joint forces of the Seven Dwarves (who love her & bully everyone in their way to saving her) and The Anonymous Prince. Her film attributes the latter's kiss as having the Power of Awakening: Snow White's story is one of Dreaming, Wishes, found family, cursed Sleep, True Love & Resurrection.
Incidentally, almost every significant event in Snow White's story features animated water: her scrubbing the castle courtyard, the wishing well, her tears of fright after being chased, tears of hurt from her & her animal friends, instructing the dwarves to Wash Their Dang Hands, the dwarves tearing up at hearing her story & upon her resurrection. It's also Notable that the Queen wanted Snow White's Heart... in a black box.
The Guiding Key: "When You Wish Upon A Star"
Between Snow White & Cinderella came Disney's Pinnochio: Disney's most Iconic song comes from that film, sung (I believe?) by the Blue Fairy.
Pinnochio, his story, his World, his Conscience (Jiminy Cricket) & the themes of his film have featured in every Kingdom Hearts game featuring Sora & Riku.
Dreams, Wishes & Stars are all Intertwined. Anyone can grow a Heart. So long as you try, Redemption is possible. True Love is Unconditional.
Pinnochio may not be a Princess nor Light himself but the KH series uses his story as Parable.
Cinderella
A kind young girl who sings "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes": Cinderella's song follows up on those in Snow White's & Pinnochio's films. Cinderella is a dreamer, kind and kind in the face of adversity. The Fairy Godmother gifts her faith with Free Transport, Emotional Support & Affirmment & a magical silver gown (magic & gown both animated in the same style as Starlight).
Cinderella features Dreams Becoming Reality, Magic being linked to Stars (as in Pinnochio), Wishes & Dreams being connected, found family & True Love.
The soap bubbles from Cinderella's chores were & remain amongst the most memorable scenes in animation: bubbles aside, Cinderella has no strong connections with water (though she cries, her tears are not emphasised in the animation).
Sleeping Beauty
Following directly in the examples of Snow White & Cinderella, Aurora's story is not actually told from her perspective but from that of the Good Fairies (her fairy godmothers). Aurora sings "Once Upon A Dream": since SB is not truly from Aurora's POV, sleeping through it almost entirely (ring any bells, Sora?), her song is less about Her & more about the Themes explored by preceding heroines: of dreaming of people & places beyond her sheltered home, of dreams & love being connected, of using dreams & stories as escapism. Her interactions with Prince Philip could be interpreted as his "going with the flow" to keep talking to a pretty girl... but, at least in BBS, Aurora's relationship with Philip is implied as beginning in shared dreams (Riku are you listening).
Blessed Sleep (replacing a curse of death) that holds a World in stasis. Dreams Becoming Reality. Found family, True Love & Resurrection.
Besides a dream-like dance in clouds (repurposed from the making of Cinderella) & the alternating dye of her birthday gown, Aurora has no true connections with water. Her name refers to a phenomena of light & there is no direct star imagery in the SB film itself.
Summary of Shared Themes:
Wishes & Music: "I'm Wishing", "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes".
Hearts: wanted in a Box; communicates wishes through dreams.
Dreams: cursed sleep, the nightmare forest chase, "a wish your heart makes", "Once Upon A Dream". In BBS, Cinderella's world is named "Castle of Dreams".
Hope: wishes, dreams, support of found family.
Water: "Snow" White, wash water, wishing wells, reflections, tears, soap bubbles, clouds, dye.
True Love: awakening & resurrection, the most powerful form of magic, something to fight for, something found in dreams.
Love & Resurrection: the go-to cure for sleeping curses.
All three princesses also have love through Found Families: Snow White finds family in the Seven Dwarves; Cinderella has her animals friends & Fairy Godmother; Aurora has the Good Fairies.
Star Symbolism: Connected By Song
Through the songs of these four films, the Pinnochio film's song acting as thematic touchstone, KH is able to connect each of these Founding Disney Princesses with the series use of star symbolism: Snow White's "wish" (to love & be loved) comes true through a "star" (she, through her kindness and willingness to help, inspires the love of the Seven Dwarves & the Anonymous Prince); Cinderella's Heart wishes for freedom from her life of servitude, a Dream made 'Real' through the compassion of Cinderella (the 'Star') inspiring her friends to help her in turn; Aurora's Dreams (her "wishes from the heart") allowed her to meet Prince Philip while the Love of her Fairy Godmothers empowered them to act against Maleficent & so rescue Aurora from death (via orchestrating a Heroic Rescue for Philip to play out).
Each of these Princesses acted as the "Hearts" of their stories, the Love they had & inspired in others leading them to create miracles both magical & mundane. Hearts are Lights & Hearts moved by Love cast the strongest Light (& Shadow) of all. These Princesses Love & are Loved in turn: the strength of their Dreams, their Wishes From The Heart, connect them to the Magic of Stars: to fairies Blue, Good & Godmother.
An Aside: Love as Freedom
This is a theme unsaid but strongly implied in all three films, given the era these heroines hail from. Marriage was a female's traditional method of leaving their childhood home, in both early 20th century North America & in Japan.
While all three princesses coveted "freedom", wishing for it outright would have given their audiences the impression that they were "selfish" or "irresponsible" (Cinderella was made for post-wartime America: her ability to retain her kindness & cheerfulness whilst doing thankless labour was why she was so beloved by audiences of the time & her animators, most of whom having been conscripted in some form or another).
Thusly, largely anonymous "handsome princes" acted as representations of escape, of joining society, of the world beyond childhood.
The KH series was made for contemporary audiences and is, at heart, Sora's Coming of Age Story: while Sora hadn't quite matured to understand the values these princesses held, he recognised in them that Hope can be powerful. When Aqua met Cinderella's Fairy Godmother in BBS, she was introduced to the concept of Love being the only true method of "defeating" Darkness (Riku's journey to self-acceptance enabling him to use his Darkness without suffering for it proves the point, and "love" is the implied requirement for the Power of Awakening)

Project 2 - Creative Brief
Brand / Publication: Hah Beets / Today’s Parrent
Background
Hah Beets is a specialized sub-brand of BCFresh Vegetables Inc. Of which, has tangential links to Hidden Garden who specialize in vegetable cookies, and Naturally Homegrown Foods Ltd. That specialize in vegetable chips.
The publication we’re adapting our advert for, “Today’s Parent”, is a parenthood magazine for new parents specialized in advice around discipline, health, behaviour, education, and nutrition.
Target Audience
Parents trying to get their kids to eat healthy and balance their nutritional needs. Kids looking to find something to occupy themselves and take interest in.
Intention
Page 19 in the example publication has a notable mention of letting kids explore food. This is a notable approach I wish for the adverts to adopt to adapt better with the publication.
The parent should be able to see the produce as their own option to introduce their kids too, kids should also be able to read this advert and discern a similar intrinsic ambition.
There is a good opportunity here to give context and inspire them to incorporate beets into their family meals. One such example recipe is roasting them with oil and herbs such as dill, oregano, and basil.
Another such unconventional idea is incorporating the beets as art&crafts veggie stamps as a kid’s activity.
The advert should also serve as way of informing our availability as a business, including contact details and possible events such as our presence in farmers markets. We should also be transparent about being an advertisement for buying produce and not extend our expectations of the reader beyond that.
Tone
Curiosity, Fascination, Hearty, Juicy, Optimistic, “Kid-Friendly”, Approachable, intrinsic motivation
Guiding Principles
Hearty, Approachable, Intrinsic
Possible Layout and Design Elements
Large Text
Bold Sans Serif Fonts
Translate text into attractive visual patterns
Use circle whorled cuts of beets as a friendly shape, like the rings in a tree stump
Use a pale yellow or another soft colour as an accent colour in contrast to the red beets.
Have photos extend past the bleed
Incorporate the taproot point into a dynamic pointer shape
Means
Use of photography, minor illustrations, and patterns to create an engaging layout that makes use of focal points. Have the layout of visual elements paired with simple worded context for both kids and parent to engage with; marketing details can be exempt to provide parents with actionable information.
