(hey) (I'm officially back on the Empire of Preys grind 👀👀👀)
quick notes:
so SO grateful for past me who wrote a fucking 25 pages long worldbuilding document on the STG, including little graphs to help future me understand military ranks, internal organization, relationship to the government, history, current tension points, etc. It pulled me back instantly in what I should care about, and it's probably the most useful piece of writing I've done regarding worldbuilding
similarly grateful for the Aeon Timeline timeline I worked on a year ago, which helped me not be completely lost re: dates and when people were alive/dead and at which point, and also when specific treaties either I or the games made up happened historically
I think I managed to push past the initial bump, which was chapter 2; and by pushing past, I mean doing a new outline for a v2 since v1, while serviceable, was very meandery and didn't do a great job introducing the salarian cast that deserved something a little bit sharper to make a strong first impression. So I just cut through the meanders and "restarted" (aka: ripping through some parts of the old chapter and rearranging them in a newer one that is shorter and know what it's doing a little more). Not properly started on that yet, but the groundwork has been laid so that's good
there are so many salarians all of the time
I have done some thinking about each important member of the Liron dynasty (to the story at least), and yeah. No wonder they are all Like That
ouch???? I have reread my first attempts at the last chapter of the story and it's. It's a lot. I have not been in the TEoP headspace for a long time and it kind of tore my heart apart regardless, so! I cannot imagine how fucked up it will make me feel in due time!!
It's a smart story!!! I am sorry for saying this everytime I return to it and becoming insufferably smug, but seriously where the fuck did it come from conceptually, I don't feel capable of holding this in my brain, like I feel too dumb for some of the concepts and yet here they are. the sociopolitical worldbuilding feels very legitimate? why + how
I will probably (ughh) need to have it checked by someone who actually is very familiar with finance, just to make sure what I have written makes sense, because I'm confident about 70% of the jist, but there's 30% of like, niche regulations and attitudes and things you'd know if you have spent time in the stock market that I just couldn't guess even with a decent amount of research. which, yea

Commander, you need to keep Cerberus at bay- I can't overstate what a victory a treaty between the Turians and the Krogan would be for the Alliance. We need all the help we can get...

Stole this thing from @messydiabolical. :)c Anyone is welcome to steal it from me as well!

I am a fan since: Forgot what year it was but I remember ME2 had already been out for a while before I bought ME1. But I caught up quickly and got to experience the release of the Arrival DLC in real time. :D
Favourite game of the series?: It's hard to pick between 1 and 2, but I'll say 2 because the concept of loyalty missions is MY JAM. Also ME2 is my favorite graphics-wise, it's got that high contrast I love so much. (hate the simplified skill trees though)
MShep or FShep?: Most of my Sheps are fSheps because the character creator for mSheps isn't versatile enough for me. :( Where's the long hair! Let me look impractical!
Earthborn, Colonist or Spacer?: I might slightly prefer Earthborn. I enjoy playing characters who've had a rough start in life and made some bad decisions, but grew up to become decent people anyway.
Biotics or Tech: Can't pick, I like variety!
Paragon or Renegade: peace for everybody in the galaxy :') But I reeeaally love the Renegade eyes so I do have some mean Sheps as well.
Favourite Class: I used to main the Infiltrator class but in my most recent run I really enjoyed the Adept. Hard to pick a favorite but I do know my favorite class is NOT the Sentinel, it always feels clunky to me somehow.
Favourite Companion: Tali or Javik. Kaidan and Thane are nearby too. Tali's character development feels very natural and wonderful to me on every playthrough and I always love to see it. Javik is a fave because he's haunted and completely alone and that combo always hooks me like, I MUST see to it that this sad man has at least one nice thing in his life.
Least favourite Companion: It's the writers' fault but Liara. It gets really old when the same companion treats you like her love interest in all 3 games no matter what. I haaaate forced hugs in roleplaying games, don't put me through that, it'll ruin the character for me.
My squad selection: In my most recent playthrough it was unsurprisingly Javik and Tali. But I also ran with Vega quite often in the early game and I kinda missed him in the end game, haha.
Favourite In-game romance: Kaidan, especially with mShep because I really enjoy a slow burn of several years. 🔥
Other pairings I like: I am motioning at my blog and presenting to you Tazzik and the Shadow Broker...... no i don't have anything else to offer at this time
Favourite NPC: I like all these shady-ass salarians like Anoleis and Jaroth and Maelon and Linron (yes) (no i'm not defending her, i just find mean characters interesting sometimes) and Chorban and probably others. Valern isn't all that shady but still a fave. Charn! And Balak, I always look forward to finding out how my Shepard reacts to him. Zaal'Koris vas Qwib-Qwib I always loved you and I knew you were the best admiral before ME3 ever happened
Favourite Antagonist: the Shadow Broker, I was so into the mystery in ME1 and man I was not disappointed when we got the reveal. I would have loved to learn more about his early life.
Favourite Mission: ME2's Suicide Mission because I lovvve how it's a culmination of all your previous actions. It felt really scary and chaotic on my first playthrough and like anything could happen. Now I know all the mechanics so nothing surprises me, but I still look forward to seeing every little detail play out.
Favourite Loyalty Mission: Tali. Also Mordin. And Samara, ugghhh I love Omega and I love playing bait uwu
Favourite DLC: Hmmm I love about half of LotSB very much but I might like Bring Down the Sky more as a whole? The mood is great, it's not super long, and nothing about it annoys me. :D I've only played the Leviathan DLC once so far so I'm not confident enough to call it a fave yet but I liked it a lot, too.
Control, Synthesis or Destroy: I just wanted an ending where we finally talk the Reapers down and they go "yeah u right actually, let's not fight anymore. :( handshake?". All this star child borderline magic stuff is kinda goofy to me. I've picked Destroy almost every time tho.
Favourite Weapon: Recently enjoyed the Blood Pack Executioner... Historically I've probably used the Widow the most. Also I LOVE the way the Revenant looks but I can't stand using it myself lmao. My hand hurts just thinking about it.
Favourite Place: nnnoooo there's so many good places. I adore the Shadow Broker's ship, first of all. Such a cool concept. Noveria for the snow and miserable people. Feels like home. I loved visiting the Migrant Fleet! But my absolute favorite place is probably Omega because it's so rough yet there's still a weird sense of community.
A quote I like: The first that came to mind is "I have a home." Idk, I don't really remember quotes unless they're repeated over and over and by that point I start hating them.
A couple important notes apropos of nothing in particular:
The VA for Fll'Yissetat sounded familiar, and sure enough, she is none other than Grey Delisle! One of the quintessential "holy shit it's her AGAIN" of the voice acting world; apparently she also voiced Nalia and Viconia earlier in this game along with some other NPCs. (We in the Bioware fandom sphere also know her as Nassana Dantius, Kahlee Sanders, Councilor Esheel, Dalatrass Linron, Velanna, and the female Bounty Hunter char from SWTOR, among others; she's also been in about three billion other things.)
When those random adventurers gave us the eyestalk, they also, for reasons I don't even pretend to understand, gave us this:
(THIS IS A CRACK FIC WEIRD STUFF AHEAD YOU BEEN WARNED)
Continuing right where the last one left off:
“Did you think I wouldn’t find you?”
The voice through the door said and as the interviewer, still going by the name Alex, opened the door there stood Groff in tears “c-can I come in??” He sniffled to which they agreed. Jon sat on the couch wiping his eyes as Alex offered some tea “I can’t believe he would do this to me!” “Do what?” “He cheated on me with Chernow, I knew he liked Hamilton but I didn’t know it was like /that/“ Groff exclaimed with Alex standing there in confusion and wondering when Groff and Lin were ever an actual thing. “Well….shit happens I guess” Alex shrugged awkwardly. Jon just gave him a look of that’s not helping me and he sighed. Alex sat on the couch and just tried to comfort Jon for the time being. Lin and Ron going into damage control
As the days passed and the photo was getting spread, chaos in the Miranda household and on social media was crazy af, Chernow’s was no better and so to save his own skin Ron posted a tweet that would make Hamilton proud called ‘the Miranda pamphlet’ it consisted of a string of tweets describing in great detail the affair with Lin Manuel Miranda, how it started and how they were caught, and something absolutely no one on twitter wanted to see. A sex tape between Mr. Chernow and Mr. Miranda made the top of the charts for a while afterwards. Alex and Groff were one of the first ones to see it “oh god-“ Alex said covering their mouth in disgust and Jonathan was already throwing up in the bathroom, literally everyone on the cast blocked Lin and Ron then posting apology videos to their medias about the whole thing. They noticed all them started with a sigh for some reason.
Things were normal for a week or so, Alex began googling about other weird stuff happening, just an average day for them. Another knock came to Alex’s door in the aftermath, also eating muffins when the knocks came to the door, Alex rolled their eyes at being interrupted in the middle of feasting but opened the door to Lin in tears “C-CAN I COME IN!?” he sniffled. Alex looked at him completely done with this and said bluntly “Nah.” They slammed the door in his face. Lin ended up staying with Groff and they had a lot of relationship issues to work out and Alex had a lot to take in with everything and as far as they’re concerned this was the end of the LinRon story. They looked at the fourth wall and waved a hand “okay you can leave now I wanna finish my muffins” Alex spoke before beginning to munch on their treats again.

Talat Megapolis Police Service and the Salarian Union Interstellar Criminal Police Organization, in cooperation with the Special Tasks Group, have issued an arrest warrant for a citizen who attempted to detonate a bomb within Sur’Kesh’s capital city.
Jaëto Tegu Sumaru Mopelias Linron Tep is hereby wanted for an act of attempted terrorism against the Salarian Union. He is believed to be armed and dangerous, and has possibly changed his appearance and identity to elude the authorities. A reward of one million (1 000 000) credits has been issued for any information that aids in his apprehension. [This is Tep Linron’s last known appearance.]
Authorities strongly believe that Tep Linron was acting on behalf of the Salarian Democratic Union when attempting the aborted act of terror. Numerous communiques from the terrorist organization were intercepted, threatening Talat megapolis with an attack identical to the projected outcome of the foiled attempt.
Dalatrass Linron has also condemned severely the revelation of her cousin being a Salarian Democratic Union accomplice. “To be targeted with such hatred by someone of our own clutches shocks me to my core being. Doubly so to learn that the brand of hatred that the terrorists cultivate has managed to overcome our familial bonds. What cause of equality would have Tep’s bomb served, if it meant to kill me, my sisters, aunts and uncles alongside millions of others? The so-called democratic union...we saw a glimpse of their desired future at Entish years ago. It nearly happened again. SDU’s true cause is destroying the Salarian Union in conflagration of familicide.”
My god do I wish there was an option to tell Dalatrass Linron to go fuck herself.
Between her attempts to bribe Shepard into continuing a genocide and the massively condescending email she sends Shepard afterwards, she might genuinely be my least favourite character in the series.
Like, Councillor Valern is also a dick about curing the genophage, but he’s like “You saved my life once so I’m just gonna accept this and move on”.
While Linron tries to shame Shepard about Mordin’s death when she told them to kill him.
It is 2166CE when Voice-Dalatrass Tschastarissi finally dies, rearing the Salarian Union awake from the passive slumber of her decades-old regime. But while the iron-willed dalatrass Linron plots her route to power with the aid of a reluctant turian diplomat assisting from the shadows, her daughter Jurlan loses herself to the past, uncovering dormant truths that may better stay untouched —and several stars away, two asari sisters pressured by money and haunted by false-starts must decide whether to let their ambition threaten far more than their lives alone.
This is a story about the empires that cling on.

The Empire of Preys is part 2 of the Halfway Homes series based on the Mass Effect universe. It is both a prequel and sequel to Halfway Home, but can also be enjoyed as a standalone. Contrary to Halfway Home, it will be released hopefully at the rate of one chapter per month, but realistically: whenever a chapter is ready.
It's a gen fic with a side-serving of romance (lesbian and straight), a deep-dive into my weird headcanons for salarian, asari and turian culture, an exploration of neo imperialism and the casual devastation that comes with soft power --and what happens when soft power no longer suffices.
This is a multi PoV story with the following cast:
Rhanda T'selvi, ex asari commando and current security freelancer on Illium
Nagatha T'selvi, ex financial adviser and current unemployed babysitter for her sister's daughter
Nemore Linron, aka the dalatrass Linron, yes this one
Jurlan Linron, her miracle of a daughter, a case in genetics whose image shapes opinion across the entire galaxy
Auren Cæpta, a chronically ill turian diplomat sent on Sur'kesh for a critical secret mission
Featuring: Cmdr. Sophie Shepard, Urdnot Wrex, and Urdnot Bakara
With: Dr. Mordin Solus, Primarch Adrien Victus, Dalatrass Linron, Urdnot Wreav, and Comm. Specialist Samantha Traynor
This will be the defining moment of Krogan history...

like while the fall of thessia was just really fucking sad and everything 10/10 cry every time it genuinely gets me and all that bc of the soldiers ON THE GROUND WITH YOU & esp bc of kyle lego’s plot armour I feel like the asari councillor owed shep an apology for her callousness when they asked her for help initially lmao
