2020 Election in the Midst of a Pandemic By Rev. Stephanie A. Duzant, MSW October 2, 2020

I was in my living room watching television, contemplating if I would go to bed early.  My brother came to my door and asked me if I had heard the news.  What news was my reply.  “Trump tested positive.”  I was in shock…at first.  I quickly turned from watching Lovecraft Country to put on the CNN.  There was Don Lemon, with a panel of journalist, Analyst and medical experts talking about what this meant for the election and our country.  I immediately turned my mind to heaven and asked God what did this mean?  God’s response would be profound to me, especially since the news was acting like we were in a state of emergency.

“Nothing has changed.  People still need to vote. People still need to stay focused on the goals that they need the election to bring.”  

On November 3, 2020 the United States of America will hold an election that will determine who will be the president and vice president of the united states, as well as who will represent us in Congress. We will also be electing local officials who will represent in our individual states, as well as judges who will preside over judicial proceedings in our districts and counties. And we will be doing this in the midst of a Pandemic that has brought the international world to its Public Health knees, and has shown us that it is no respecter of person, be it people we know and love, or leaders of nations.  We are also conducting elections during a time of social unrest and economic crisis that have invoked protest and riots (There is a difference) throughout our nation.  Yet the word from the Lord is that we are to stay the course and complete the plan that we started with.  Vote.  

I seek out the Odes of Solomon when I am in search of a sacred text that will give voice to what my spirit is not only feeling, but in need of hearing. Ode 8 would be the one that my spirit rested upon when I sought comfort and confirmation.  Verses three through seven would solidify God’s message.  

Ode 8:3-7 (A New New Testament Translation)

Stand and be restored,

All of you who were once flattened.

Speak, you who were silent,

Because your mouth has been opened.

From now on be lifted up, you who were destroyed

Since your justice has been raised.

For the Right Hand of the Lord is with you all,

And she will be a helper for you.

Peace was prepared for you,

Before what may be your war.

 Donald Trump and his wife having tested positive for Coronavirus/Covid-19 does not change anything. We still need to vote for those who will stand against White Supremacy and systemic oppression.  We still need to vote for those who believe in science and Women’s rights.  We still need to vote for those who understand that the United States is a part of an International forum and the good for the world means the good of the country. We still need to vote for humanity, and not just self-centered humans.  Keep that before you.

You will see Trump's illness on the news for the next few days. You will read all the well wishes from politicians who just hours before the story broke,  were denouncing him for being racist, xenophobic, sexist and unintelligent.  You will hear things like, “there is no way he will win now”, or that nothing is going to change.  You may even hear folks saying that Trump is not sick and that it is just a way to take focus off of the debate where he refused to denounce White Supremacist, telling them to “Stand back and stand by”.  And of course, there will be folks who are saying that he is trying to stall or steal the election.  No matter what you hear keep the words of Odes 8 with you as you complete the task at hand.  VOTE!  

Donald Trump is still the same man that lost the popular vote by 3 million, yet won the electoral college in 2016 (turn to your virtual neighbor and say, we need to get rid of the electoral college).  He is the same man that called racist rioters in Charlottesville Virginia, “Good People”.  He is the same man that called nations in Africa and the Caribbean shithole countries. The same man who authorized children being separated from their parents and being caged at the borders.  This is the same man that wants to undo the Affordable care act because it is named after President Obama.  The same man that demanded that President Obama show proof of being born in the United States pushing the racist lie that Obama was not a US Citizen.  

Yes, Donald Trump is the same man who was a racist landlord in NY. An unscrupulous business man who refused to pay contractors after completion of work, and who did not pay his fare share of taxes.  $750 over 10 years is appalling and an insult to all the hard-working middle-class folks who pay much more than that in a month of taxes.  

And we shall never forget that Donald Trump is the same man that took out a full page add calling for the death penalty for the Central Park 5. When they were exonerated of all charges, and Mayor DeBlasio agreed to pay the $41 Million settlement, Trump wrote an op-ed calling the payment ridiculous and a disgrace.  

Some may not want to wish death on him, but that does not mean that they are ok with him being re-elected.  And before you judge those who are ok with him succumbing to death by the hands of Covid-19, ask yourselves, has anyone they knew and loved been on the 200,000 plus list of names of those that have died in our country?  A list that did not have to be so long.  A list that could have drastically been prevented if Trump did not “downplay” the seriousness of the virus for the sake of the economy.

“Nothing has changed.  People still need to vote. People still need to stay focused on the goals that they need the election to bring.”  

The right hand of the Lord will be with you, whether you mail in your ballot, go to early voting sites, or vote in person on election day.  Stand, all of you who are formerly incarcerated…who have had your voting rights restored.  All of you who have turned 18 this year, or who have become naturalized citizens, or who have registered to vote for the first time, to use your voting voice that is no longer silent.  Now is our time to use our hands to raise up justice, when we vote for the candidates who will work to bring justice for all of us.  For God, our helper…is with us, and She is a very present help.

And because we are clear that the adversary will not go down without a fight, we prepare for the systemic war for justice. Our spirits continue to fight, giving thanks for the moments of peace we are able to rest in for now.

“Nothing has changed.  People still need to vote.” A word from the Lord, for the people of God.  Thanks be to God.

1. House - The series follows the life of anti-social, pain killer addict, witty and arrogant medical doctor Gregory House with only half a muscle in his right leg. He and his team of medical doctors try to cure complex and rare diseases from very ill ordinary people in the United States of America.

2. Person of interest - An ex-assassin and a wealthy programmer saves lives via a surveillance AI named the machine that sends them the identities of civilians involved in impending crimes. However, the details of the crimes–including the civilians’ roles–are left a mystery and things take a twist when another Ai declares war against the machine. Honestly it’s amazing, and if you like the shows where the heroes aren’t always the ones to survive then it’s the one for you (and there’s a pretty darn good dog in it too).

3. New Tricks - After a hostage rescue goes wrong, superintendent Sandra Pullman is put in charge of unsolved crimes. With little resources and no back-up she decides to recruit three ex policeman. However times have changed, unlike her new recruits. Jack Halford is yet to get over the loss of his wife, Brian Lane is over obsessed and over medicated, and Gerry Standing is not quite the ladies man he used to be. They may have the experience but it’s not like the old days. Not only are they chasing criminals, but they are having to deal with a new police force which does not always appreciate their old style policing. Unsolved cases with a group of witty elderly, what’s not to love?

4. Hustle - The story of a group of elite con artists, who each week pull off a complicated scam with several twists. Mickey is the group’s leader, who comes up with the plans. Albert is a veteran con man who in his later years is a “roper,” searching out suitable victims and introducing them to his cohorts. Ash comes up with all the locations and equipment needed for the cons. Stacie steps in whenever she needs to use her feminine wiles. The group is rounded off by Danny, a young amateur grifter who Mickey takes under his wing. Honestly? Some of their plans are pretty darn good.

5. Primeval - When strange anomalies start to appear all over England, Professor Cutter and his team must track down and capture all sorts of dangerous prehistoric creatures from Earth’s distant past and near future putting their lives at risk whilst trying their best to keep it a secret from the public or possibly bribing the people who do see. Want to see people on mini bikes chasing a velociraptor in a mall? Then this is definitely the show for you-

6. Once upon a time - A story of a new world, one in which fairy-tale legends and modern life collide. Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) is comfortable in her life as a bail bonds collector when Henry – the child she gave up a decade earlier – suddenly shows up. He is convinced that she is the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, who sent her away before the Evil Queen could cast a spell, freezing the fairy tale world in time and bringing them to present-day Storybrooke, Maine. After taking Henry home, Emma decides to stay in the town to keep an eye on him, and she discovers he may not be wrong after all. Seriously you get really into it and root for the characters really quickly.

7. Buffy the vampire slayer - "In every generation there is a chosen one… she alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the slayer.“ Buffy Summers knows this tale by heart, and no matter how hard she tries to be just a "normal girl”, she can not escape from her destiny… Thankfully, she is not alone in her quest to save the world, as she has the help of her friends, the hilarious evil-fighting team called “The Scooby Gang”. Together, Buffy & co. will slay their demons, survive one apocalypse after another, attend high school and college… and above all, understand that growing up can truly be Hell sometimes… literally.

8. The x files - Two FBI agents, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully work in an unassigned detail of the bureau called the X-Files investigating cases dealing with unexplained paranormal phenomena (aliens). Mulder, a true believer, and Scully, a skeptic, perceive their cases from stand points of science and the paranormal. This can literally get really weird but to be honest it’s one hell of a ride. 

9. Death in paradise - Scotland Yard DI Richard Poole is sent to the Caribbean island of Sainte Marie to solve a fellow policeman’s murder. Having done so, he finds himself seconded to the local police force as the dead man’s replacement. Poole proves to be a brilliant detective, solving several complex murders. He’s not quite suited to either the pace of life on the island or the heat and sand, neither of which he likes very much. He also doesn’t like seafood. That aside, the place is just great. Of course there are some changes along the road with main characters but over all this is a pretty good show

10. Brooklyn nine-nine - Captain Ray Holt takes over Brooklyn’s 99th precinct, which includes Detective Jake Peralta, a talented but carefree detective who’s used to doing whatever he wants. The other employees of the 99th precinct include Detective Amy Santiago, Jake’s over achieving and competitive partner; Detective Rosa Diaz, a tough and kept to herself coworker; Detective Charles Boyle, Jake’s best friend who also has crush on Rosa; Detective Sergeant Terry Jeffords, who was recently taken off the field after the birth of his twin girls; and Gina Linetti, the precinct’s sarcastic administrator. If you love comedy and idiotic situations this is a great show to watch

50. Why do you have a tumblr? Started one a number of years ago to keep up with BBC Sherlock news. I also am a long time Star Trek, Babylon 5, X-Files, Star Wars, and Terry Pratchett fan, so that’s cool as well. Plus I like seeing the creative stuff on Tumblr. I’m a professor, so it also helps keep me at least slightly plugged in to what young people are concerned about, and I think trying to understand that makes me a better teacher.

In Mexico’s Border City, Haitians Hailed as Success Story

TIJUANA, Mexico--A few blocks from a shelter housing members of a Central American migrant caravan sits the first Haitian restaurant to open in Tijuana, a bustling eatery that has come to symbolize an immigrant success story in this Mexican border city where Haitians are now a part of the fabric, landing jobs, studying and marrying locals.

Tijuana welcomed thousands of Haitians to pursue a scaled-down American dream south of the border after the U.S. closed its doors on them more than two years ago. But it has not shown the same tolerance so far toward the Central Americans, who have met official complaints and anti-caravan protests even though most of the people in this city are migrants or the offspring of migrants.

That’s raising questions about how the newest group will integrate if it doesn’t don’t get into the U.S. or return home.

Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum has made a point of saying the city is not happy with the caravan migrants who began arriving last week, and he compared the Central American group unfavorably with the roughly 3,000 Haitians who ended up staying after their bid to reach the U.S. failed.

“The Haitians arrived with their papers, with a clear vision,” Gastelum said in an interview posted on the city’s Facebook page. They came “in an orderly way, they never asked us for food or shelter,” renting apartments and making their own food. He said the Haitians found jobs and “inserted themselves in the city’s economy” and had not been involved in any disturbances.

By contrast, Gastelum said, the caravan of Central Americans “had arrived all of sudden, with a lot of people--not all ... but a lot--were aggressive and cocky.”

Victor Clark-Alfaro, a professor of Latin American studies at San Diego State University who lives in Tijuana, attributes the backlash to the way the caravan arrived--suddenly with thousands pouring in. Others point to social media and the hostile rhetoric of U.S. President Donald Trump, who said it harbored criminals and gang members and was planning an “invasion.”

Many also say the actions of a few are tarnishing the image of the roughly 4,000 migrants who are camped in Tijuana. In the past week, city officials have arrested three dozen caravan members for drug possession, public intoxication, disturbing the peace and resisting police, and said they would be deported to their home countries.

It’s also only been months since an earlier caravan of Central Americans arrived, and some of them are still in the city waiting to get asylum in the U.S. That has added to fears here that it could be the start of a never-ending deluge.

U.S. border inspectors are processing only about 100 asylum claims a day at Tijuana’s main crossing to San Diego, and there was already a waiting list of 3,000 when the new migrants arrived, so most will have to wait months to even be considered for asylum.

Tijuana has a long history as a kind of Ellis Island for U.S.-bound migrants. It receives up to 80,000 a year from across Mexico, Latin America and more recently as far away as India and Africa. The city has large pockets of Chinese and Korean immigrants.

Central Americans have been coming to the city since the civil wars of the 80s in El Salvador, Nicaragua and Guatemala.

Many in the newly arrived caravan, however, are destitute people who left their homelands at the spur of the moment and have been utterly dependent on handouts along their journey.

Many of the Haitians, meanwhile, arrived with at least some resources after working in Brazil, though despite what the mayor said, they also stayed at shelters after taking an accidental route to Tijuana from their impoverished Caribbean homeland. The last group of Haitians moved out of the Padre Chava shelter in April.

Brazil and its neighbors took in the Haitians after that country’s 2010 earthquake. As construction jobs for the 2016 Summer Olympics ended and Brazil’s economy slumped, they crossed 10 countries by plane, boat, bus and on foot to San Diego, where U.S. authorities initially let them in on humanitarian grounds.

Then President Barack Obama shifted course in 2016 and started deporting Haitian arrivals. Many decided to stay in Mexico after the government gave them temporary transit permits and have since applied for Mexican residency. The majority in the Central American caravan so far have refused Mexico’s repeated offers of residency or asylum and vowed to cross the border.

Many of the Haitians also have college degrees and have been recruited to work for factories that export to the U.S. Some can be found waiting tables and worshipping at congregations that have even added services in Creole.

They opened beauty parlors, shops and restaurants, like Kriskapab Baborijinal, a bright blue-and-red cafe that is busy serving Mexicans and Haitians daily dishes of coconut rice, mashed plantains and goat stew.

In the window is a sign for the Association of the Defense of Haitian Migrants. Philocles Julda, 44, is one of 11 Haitian immigrants who started the group a year ago to give the community a place to help itself with everything from Spanish lessons to paying medical bills.

Julda said he too wanted to get to the U.S. when he first arrived to Tijuana and still wishes he was earning dollars, but said he has been able to make a life here. He works at a factory.

“I feel for the migrants who are arriving from other countries just like we did,” he said. “But you do adapt.”

And work is plentiful in Tijuana, whose economy has been growing and whose factories have thousands of openings.

“We have been looking for workers for quite a while,” said Alejandrina Yanez, who works in human resources at a factory that makes warehouse storage racks for Costco, Home Depot and other international companies.

Yanez went to the Padre Chava shelter Wednesday to see if any migrants were interested in jobs that pay about $100 a week.

Omin Velasquez, 26, of Tocoa, Honduras, was intrigued. Velasquez came with the caravan but decided not to continue on to the U.S. after seeing the border wall topped with newly-installed rows of razor wire.

He said it took him some days to decide, but he now feels that there are enough opportunities in Tijuana and support from locals that it’s not worth the risk of crossing into the U.S. He has started his paperwork to get a Mexican visa to stay.

“There is so much work here,” he said. “I no longer feel the need to go to the U.S.”

September 15, 2020: Honduras: Corruption denounced in the purchase of mobile hospitals

In Honduras, the number of Covid-19 infections is approaching 70,000 and there are more than 2,000 deaths. In hospitals and triage centers, the demand is so high that in many cases doctors do not supply, while the construction of mobile hospitals progresses slowly and in the midst of a corruption scandal due to the overvaluation in the purchase of them.

Young stylist Kenia Ferrera lost her father to lack of medical care at a health center, located in a populous colony of Tegucigalpa. So far, they came in search of medical attention because of the lack of space in hospitals, which have been overwhelmed by the Covid-19 emergency.

"I went to several public hospitals and none of them wanted to treat him, then I took him to a private hospital and they also told me that there was no room. Then, I decided to go to a health center and there I was admitted, but none of the doctors wanted to touch me, nor did they give me first aid. There he had the last heart attack and my father died in my arms," Ferrera said.

To try to resolve the health crisis against the clock, the Government of Honduras purchased seven mobile hospitals from Turkey, with the provider Elmed Medical System. Each cost $47 million, when the real price is $14 million,the NationalAnti-Corruption Council (CNA) revealed in its eighth report titled 'Corruption in Times of Covid-19'.

Following the complaint, the Public Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation. There are still no concrete results, in a country where more than 90% of crimes go unpunished.

"It is very important that the Public Prosecutor's Office and the High Court of Auditors thoroughly investigate the complaints made. The government is interested in investigating in an efficient and objective way everything related to mobile hospitals because many things have been said and it is necessary that the truth be known," said The Minister of the Presidency, Ebal Díaz.

After a series of inspections in the containers, the Public Ministry confirmed the total seizure of 44 vaporizers and 54 circuits of anesthesia flow in poor condition. These findings led to the resignation of Health Minister Alba Consuelo Flores and the head of the state procurement office, Marco Bográn, officials who are still under investigation.

The medical association set off alarm bells at these events and reacted with indignation to the findings of the Public Prosecutor's Office. In addition, they say that of the seven mobile hospitals, only two have arrived in the country and are not yet functional.

"These hospitals came with material that was not only second-rate, but waste material. It wasn't even good equipment anymore, it was pretty much garbage that came in the bins. They also do not have the hydrosanitary conditions," revealed the president of the Medical College of Honduras, Suyapa Figueroa.

Reports of irregularities in mobile hospitals and supplies mainly affect health workers in Honduras, which has already been hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. There, fifty doctors, nurses and virologists have died from boredom.

This contrasts with pressures from productive sectors that forced the government to reopen some economic activities, such as public transport. The new relaxation of the measures makes experts think that in Honduras there may be a greater uptick in the disease from October.

In its latest report, the Inter-American Government Procurement Network published a list of the countries in the region best and worst prepared in purchasing processes in the face of Covid-19. Honduras appears among the worst evaluated,surpassed only by the Caribbean country of Saint Lucia.
