Thank you so much for playing my Penny for Your Thoughts ask game, Anon-Friend, and for asking about such a beautiful little tree! 🌲🌸 I love that you included a cherry blossom emoji for Kirsch too and that this ask came in on his birthday! How fitting! Happy Birthday to the most sparkly character in Black Clover! 💖(Literally, friends. He literally sparkles...)

Kirsch is such a fun character, but he's objectively not the best (or nicest) person in the world. He's pretty full of himself and those kind of haughty attitudes (without some sort of inferiority underlying them) can make me really, really dislike a character (so perhaps I'm a bit on Mimosa's side about Kirsch being annoying). That said, he definitely made me laugh (it's those sparkles and those melodramatic entrances, I'm telling you!), and I did actually find some enjoyment in his appearances because he's just so over-the-top and ridiculous (and wildly entertaining). I feel like I'm bashing on him a bit, so I will say that I appreciate the fact that he isn't afraid to be himself and march to the beat of his own drum. Even though he's a Vermillion, he didn't feel the Crimson Lions squad was a good fit for him so he decided to join up with Coral Peacocks instead. He really doesn't seem to put up with any garbage from anyone and just does what he wants regardless of what is the societal norm or what's expected of him, which as we've seen in the aristocratic Clover Kingdom circles, can be a very dangerous (i.e. socially damaging) thing so it does take bravery to break the mold as royalty, I think. Plus, it takes a lot of bravery to go out in public dressed in such gaudy attire. (Seriously what is that headband? Where did it come from, and why does he wear it? 😂). All jokes aside though, I actually do love Kirsch's originality, and I appreciate that he began to recognize some of the errors of his ways (at least in terms of his relationship with his sister) and is trying to be better. I'd love to see a little bit more of him, especially building on those themes from the Royal Knights' Exam in which he was starting to become a little less narcissistic and starting to understand his sister and patch things up with her. I hope his character development arc continues to trend in this positive direction! 🌸

I think Kirsch's relationship with his little sister, Mimosa, and with his Captain, Dorothy Unsworth, are probably the most interesting things about him. I really am such a sucker for problematic/complicated siblings relationships so goodness knows I got invested in Mimosa and Kirsch's sibling bond and wanted them to reach some sort of understanding with each other. I'll admit that even though it meant their relationship with each other was strained, I do love how he brought out this different side of Mimosa. In a way it's kind of nice to know that Mimosa is human and can actually get really annoyed with people (even if "people" is really only her brother). I hope now that they've come to understand each other a little better they'll be able to have a better relationship going forward. I'm really curious about how Kirsch and Dorothy get along as Vice Captain and Captain of the Coral Peacocks. They seem like they would be such unlikely friends, and I love imagining what their dynamic is like.

The first song that came to mind for Kirsch was "I'm Too Pretty For This" by Claire Rosinkranz. Please disregard the fact it's a breakup song (A/N: I don't ship Kirsch with anyone. He's too full of himself right now for me to get behind the idea of him being in a relationship with anyone else. He needs to learn some selflessness first), but it's just the overall vibes and that sort of haughty cheekiness of the refrain that reminds me of Kirsch. I can totally see Kirsch responding to someone else's garbage in this way--just prancing around with his sparkles and flower petals like:

"I'm too pretty for this Da-da-da-da-da-da I'm too pretty for this Da-da-da-da-da-da"

And I do mean that as a compliment. Kirsch doesn't put up with anybody else's garbage and does whatever the heck he wants and (at least under certain circumstances) that can be a really good and commendable thing.

Hi there, Anon-Friend! Thank you so much for the ask and for playing my Penny for Your Thoughts ask game! ASOUE is a series that has always been near and dear to me, so I absolutely love asks about it so many thanks for that. 🥰

Gosh Carmelita Spats is one of those characters I just really, really enjoy disliking. She's such a snotty little brat, but she's also so entertaining as an antagonist that I (usually) thoroughly enjoy her appearances even if I don't like her as a person...er...character. (I do like her as a villain though!). The Austere Academy has been my favorite book in the entire Snicket-verse since I first read ASOUE as a child, and Carmelita Spats being terrible and tormenting the other children was definitely a big part of that of that story. Admittedly, I really couldn't stand her when I was a kid, but when I reread the series as I got older I did appreciate her entertainment value and quotable one-liners. All of that said, I can't forgive her for being such a horrible person even if she does make me laugh.

In terms of the Netflix adaptation, I thought Carmelita was one of the best adapted characters. She was just exactly as I had always imagined her in my head to the point where it was almost like she had jumped directly out of the book--just so delightfully awful! I loved how the Netflix series really played up the bond she eventually had with Esme too (and not just because Esme is my favorite villain in the series and definitely ranks on my 'Top 5 favorite villains of all-time' list). Yes, Esme sort of adopted Carmelita in the books, but they really made that a big part of both of their arcs in the Netflix series, and since there is something so delightfully detestable about both of them, it was really great to see them play off each other in this faux-mother-daughter relationship. Also, can we talk about how Netflix made her a literal "cakesniffer"?? Because I laughed so hard I had to literally pause the show! 😂

For a Carmelita song, I have chosen "Primadonna" by MARINA. It generally comes to my mind as an Esme song, but I think it's particularly fitting for Carmelita as well since she is equally as self-absorbed and definitely wants the world just as much. They're both undoubtedly the "primadonna girls" of the Snicket universe.

A penny for En Ringard 🌳🍄

Hi there, Anon-friend! Thank you so much for your ask and for playing my Penny for Your Thoughts ask game! 💖 I love that you've shared one of your little trees with me and included both a tree and a mushroom emoji! Perfect for En!! 🌲🍄

En is such a great character! I love how he has this very easy-going personality, but he can be very protective (and aggressive in that way) even if it's through Mr. Mushroom. Also, I absolutely love his devoted big brother energy. We don't know much about his relationship with his many siblings, but I think it's heavily implied that he cares about them very much and is a great big brother since he sort of adopts Yuno and Noelle as his honorary siblings during the Royal Knights' Exam (and I like to think treats them the way he would his own brothers and sisters). It was especially nice for Noelle to (finally) get to have this supportive older brother figure, and it really warmed my heart to see how he really encouraged her and cheered her on during the exam.

For that reason, I've picked the song "I Lived" by OneRepublic as kind of a nod to his encouragement of Noelle and his hopes for her as his honorary little sister (he probably has the same hopes and encouragements for his actual siblings as well, for that matter). Also, as a bit of joke, I've also included the song "A Million Mushrooms" by The Gothic Archies because it's the only song about mushrooms that I know, and I think En might enjoy its quirky vibes.

🌲My "Little Trees" Appreciation Post🌲

Was your favorite character barely in the story but still made a lasting impact on you? Do you feel your favorite character is underrated and/or forgotten and deserves more love, recognition, and attention? Then, they might just be a "Little Tree!" 🌳

🌲What is a "Little Tree"?

A "Little Tree" is not a main character, not a main supporting character, and, in most cases, not even a supporting character but rather a tiny side character who was barely there--like a little tree in the background of the main, overarching storyline--but who still made an impression and is important to you.

🌲What's so special about "Little Trees"?

Though seemingly unimportant in the grand scheme of the main character's overarching storyline, "Little Trees" are often unique and dynamic characters who left an impression great enough to be remembered despite their lack of "screentime"

"Little Trees" are often forgotten or overlooked for the Forest (overarching plot) or the Big Trees (main and main supporting characters), but they deserve love and attention too!

🌲Why the term "Little Tree"?

I have always gotten attached to small side characters, and “My Little Trees" is the term that my friends, sisters, and I use to refer to them in real life. (A/N: It's a long running joke and my friends seem to really like it. I've been gifted grow your own tiny bonsai tree kits and a "I just really love trees" shirt with small trees on it from them 😂). It has long been a part of my vernacular, and I realized recently I've been using it on my blog with no explanation so consider this an explanation post.

🌲How can I tell if my favorite character is a "Little Tree"?

The definition "Little Tree" is fairly broad and very relative so there are many characters who can fit in that category. You can have a little tree who is unimportant in the main character's arc or in the grand scheme of the overarching plot of a story but who is important in a particular storyline whether that be a plot arc or character arc (i.e. Finesse Calmreich is integral to Finral and Langris' arcs in Black Clover, but they are themselves side characters which makes Finesse a side, side character and not important to Asta's arc as the protagonist. Meredy was relatively important in the Tenrou Island/Grimoire Heart arc and showed up a couple more times in other important story arcs in Fairy Tail, but she wasn't that important to the overarching plot of the series as a whole).

Other good ways to figure out whether a character is a "Little Tree" are to count either:

How many pages, chapters, episodes or arcs that character appears in (i.e. Solidad (Saori) appears in just 4 episodes of Pokémon. One of which is just a cameo, but she is still my favorite Pokémon character of all time [A/N: I actually cosplayed her at a convention once. No one knew who I was though])

OR

The degrees of separation from the protagonist (i.e. in Black Clover, David Swallow is on the same squad as Yuno who is best friends/rivals with Asta)

Note: ocassionally, a character who should likely fit the definition of a "Little Tree" is so beloved by the fandom that you don't feel as personally compelled to show or garner appreciation for that character. That character can still be your "Little Tree" if you want. 🌳

What is most important is your own personal feelings surrounding this character. Only you can decide how much of a "side character" a character must be in order to be one of your "Little Trees." It's very intuitive.

Awww...Yay!! I'm always excited to see some "Little Tree" Appreciation in my inbox! It's so encouraging to see the tiny side characters getting some love. 💚 Thank you so much for the ask, fellow "Little Tree" Enthusiast! 🌲

What probably sticks out the most to me about Kaiser is that he has somehow managed to have by all accounts (though admittedly there have not been many accounts) an extremely functional relationship with his wife in a world of extremely convoluted and dysfunctional relationships and extremely unnecessary love shapes. Romantic ships in the world of Black Clover are quite frankly exhausting unless you are a side character (and both you and your significant other are alive), and I think Kaiser should get all the kudos just for managing to have (what I like to think is) a pretty solid marriage! Kaiser Granvorka x his wife for the win, friends!

In all seriousness though, Kaiser seems like a very decent, honorable man. He really steps up for the Purple Orcas when they are at their lowest and tries his best to restore them as a respectable Magic Knight squad. We don't know a lot about him, but he seems very reasonable and level-headed and is a strong leader but also very humble which is a stark contrast to a lot of the more notorious members of his squad (i.e. Gueldre and Xerx). He also seems to be very emotionally sturdy and unphased--just kind of quietly going about his business as opposed to the other Magic Knight Captains who really either command attention through strong personalities and presence and/or garner it with these big, chaotic personalities or behaviors. Also, he really seems to genuinely love and respect his wife which in an ideal world wouldn't be so noteworthy but in this world where there is so much rampant disrespect, infidelity, and unhappy marriages ect. ect. amongst the Clover Kingdom nobility of that older generation/Kaiser's generation, it is nice to see that at least someone is actually acting like a decent human and taking his marriage and wedding vows seriously (and, probably drinking his respect women juice, too. I get those vibes from him! He's a good man!).

Also, his magic is really cool! A vortex magic is just such an interesting concept, and I wish we got to see more of it!

For a Kaiser-song, I feel like I really have to highlight his incredibly functional relationship with his wife that (it seems) he does take very seriously and is very important to him. They have been together for a long time and that's nothing to scoff at, especially since he really seems to have genuine love and respect for her even after all of these years. Seriously, I have so many feelings about Kaiser and his wife right now, so I have chosen the song "When I Said I Do" for him. 💕

What are your thoughts on Klaus from Black Clover?

Aww I really like Klaus Lunettes! 💖 In fact, I love him so much now that I often forget he was a bit of a jerk in the very beginning. 😅 As soon as he started to show how devoted he is to his friends and how much he cares about them, he really became one of my favorites. It was so delightful to watch his friendships with Yuno and Mimosa (and eventually Asta) develop over time, and I really like that he's kind of the Mom-friend in his friendship trio. He is very conscientious and really wants to look after and take care of his friends, and I think that it's very sweet how much he cares and worries about them (even if he can be kind of a tsun about expressing that sometimes).

The song "Silver Lining" by Hurts comes to my mind as a Klaus song because I think it speaks to how he really does try so hard to fight for his friends and how he is very brave when it comes to standing his ground and protecting the people he cares about.

He is very muchba side character in Black Clover, but a penny for your thoughts on Hamon Caseus 🥰

Hello friend and fellow Little Tree appreciator!🌲 I'm always happy to hear I'm not the only one who gets attached to the tiny side characters! Hamon is great, and I had a lot of rambles about him. However, I've put them under the cut because spoilers.

Hamon is just delightful! His magic is really cool and very creative, and he's just a nice guy--what's not to like? 😊 He has such a positive attitude towards everything. There's this scene (in Episode 80 during the Royal Knights' Exam) that always makes me laugh where Charmy is literally climbing him like a tree in the background looking for food, and he just shrugs the whole thing off with a laugh. 😂

I'm fairly certain that Hamon is just the type of person who is pretty much up for anything, and it was really such a great moment when he offered his support for Finral and his plans for their team in the Royal Knights' Exam. He basically had the: "Well that sounds good to me!" attitude without a lot of question or hesitation, and the reader/watcher (having been following the Black Bulls around) knew what that meant to Finral and it really endeared Hamon to me.

Also, it's nice to know the Golden Dawn isn't entirely full of stuck-up, snobby sticks in the mud, right? I'm kidding. I love the Golden Dawn, but they certain have a lot of really intense, overachieving, type-A personalities there, yes? Whereas Hamon certainly has that desire to succeed, but he still seems to know how to have fun. I love that scene where he puts together that impromptu "concert" for Puli to sing to the rest of the Royal Knights. (Speaking of, I have no idea what was going on between them but I'm here for it! Hamon and Puli friendship? Camaraderie? True Love? (I don't know) for the win, y'all!)

It was very tragic how his story ended so prematurely, but he proved what a brave and outstanding person he was in the end when he was literally willing to die to protect his friends and his squad.

And for that reason, I've picked the song "For You" by Keith Urban for Hamon who made the ultimate sacrifice for his friends.

MILADY!! 😭💖 I have been just squealing over this ask, Anon-friend! I love Minerva and all of Sabertooth honestly, and I'm almost finished reading the Twin Dragons manga so this group has definitely been on my mind recently. Minerva Orland Headcanons

💙-- Hurt/Comfort

Given the way Minerva was raised (and conditioned to hide her pain and weaknesses), she has a lot of difficulty opening up about her feelings especially when they are grounded in fears and insecurities. While she suffers a lot of aftereffects of trauma, she buries them because she sees them as a sign of weakness. For instance, she hides the fact that she frequently has interrupted sleep due to nightmares, by trying to occupy herself around the guildhall when she is up in the middle of the night. This often involves cooking and/or preparing "midnight snacks" for herself.

Surprisingly enough, she soon begins to run into Yukino in the kitchen in the middle of the night. Yukino has a secret talent for baking and somewhat shyly asks if she can join in. They start cooking their "midnight snacks" together and slowly become friends. Eventually, Yukino shares with Minerva that she has trouble sleeping due to recurring nightmares about her sister. Minerva is shocked but also comforted to know that she isn't the only one who has upsetting dreams, and she admits, for the first time, that she has nightmares too. Though Minerva doesn't share any details about her dreams, Yukino understands and gives her a tender hug.

💖-- Alternate Universe (AU)

In a Regency-Era England AU...

Lady Minerva is the daughter of the Earl of Orland (Jiemma) and is incredibly independent despite the strict societal norms of the time--secretly publishing adventure books for children under a penname. She survives the London social season with the help of her dearest friends: Lady Yukino, the quiet but sweet younger daughter of a viscount (occasionally her more boisterous elder sister, Lady Sorano, tags along), The Viscount Eucliffe, the exuberant and outgoing heir to an earldom and the only one of the group who ever really enjoys himself at any of the parties, and The Most Honourable The Marquess of Cheney, who has newly inherited his title and gets dragged along to all of the parties by The Viscount Eucliffe when he would much rather be at home in his library with his beloved cat (Frosh).

💕 -- As a Parent

After everything Minerva went through in her own childhood, she had a lot of fears about becoming a parent herself, but they were all entirely unfounded. She truly loves her children and wants to give them the world. Minerva is usually not an overprotective or coddling parent, but she can definitely go into a "Mama Bear" mode and will fight to protect her children if need be.

Given the harsh environment she grew up in, Minerva can have a lot of worries when it comes to disciplining her kids, especially since she tends to be a bit more stern, just by nature. However, she strikes a good balance between being firm but kind with her kids, and her discipline always stems from a place of love and wanting what is best for them. If anything, her children tend to bring out a softer side of their mother, and while Minerva does not spoil them, she will sometimes surprise them with little treats and fun activities and really does her best to make sure they have the happy childhood she never got to have growing up. Expressing her love with words does not come easily for her, but she goes out of her way to tell her children she loves them because it was something she never heard as a child and she never wants her kids to doubt that they have a mother who loves them no matter what.

Yuri Dreyar Headcanons

💚-- General

Yuri has always been an amazing storyteller. He's so incredibly passionate and exuberant when he talks that he has a real gift for drawing the listener into the story he is telling. When Makarov was very little, Yuri used to tuck him into bed every night and tell him fantastical tales of his adventures in Fairy Tail and as a treasure hunter. The stories were so gripping and compelling, but Yuri had a tendency to often leave off on cliffhangers that left his son on the edge of his seat and actually excited for bedtime the following evening just so he could find out what happened next.

Tiny Makarov was so captivated his dad's stories that he would often beg Yuri to play "Fairy Tail" with him, and Yuri would always oblige--playing with his son for hours pretending that they were in the guild together and going on grand adventures. To this day, it's one of the things that Makarov remembers most about his father, and Yuri's stories really inspired him to want to become guild master one day so he could actually live their adventure games.

🧡-- Childhood/Backstory

Yuri grew up in a merchant family who briefly sent him to an all-boys boarding school to get an education after it became clear that he was quick-witted and intellectually gifted. His teachers had no idea what to do with him, however, since he had such a scatterbrain and could never sit still. Even more perplexing was the fact that he continually earned top marks in his classes, mostly through merits of his own natural intelligence since he spent most of his time goofing around rather than studying.

He was eventually expelled for trapping a goat on the roof in the middle of the night dressed in the headmaster's pyjamas and night cap and that was when he decided he wanted to become a treasure hunter.

💘-- Romance

Yuri Dreyar has two "Love" modes: (1) dismissive tsun who acts like he couldn't care less about his beloved (even though he is (often obviously) desperately in love) and (2) grandiose romantic who will shower his beloved with the biggest, flashiest romantic gestures known to man. [A/N: The in between is total simp who will blatantly refuse to ask his beloved out on a date but will buy crates and crates full of fruit in a grand but ridiculous love expression and a desperate plea for attention (which I wrote about in my Yuri/Rita fic here actually)].

Some bonus headcanons about Yuri/Rita specifically:

Bonus: Yuri naturally expresses his love through gift giving and impulse buying. When he is wooing Rita, Precht and Warrod have to ban him from shopping and cut him off from guild funds for a while because whenever he is out at the shops or market, he will always come back with some shiny new trinket for her (often jewelry, sometimes flowers and chocolates, but also a lot of inexplicable and random things). His reasoning is usually, "It's pretty and Rita is pretty." His friends insist that even if that is the case, she does not need every "pretty" item in existence. Yuri begs to differ and has basically no impulse control so Rita gets lots and lots of presents.

She soon recognizes that these are expressions of Yuri's love for her and truly appreciates them, even the random ones...except for the time he brought an acorn home for her from a walk while she was pregnant with Makarov because it "reminded him of her." (A/N: He can be such a dolt sometimes, but his heart is in the right place).

Bonus 2 (because I poked a lot of fun at Yuri & wanted to write an actually serious one): During the Second Caravan Trade War, Yuri and Rita exchanged letters. Yuri soon realized that he could tell Rita things in his letters that he could never tell anyone else: about his feelings, the war, and himself. This realization was soon followed by another one: he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.
