The question came in through mud for Ron, sat as he was with his visitor at their usual table in the hospital's day room. This was no long from now outing at Crowthorne however. This was a London hosi he'd wound up in, cast there after he'd been a swine at Long Grove where they felt, rightly or not, that he'd do a better job at getting better if he was closer to home than he'd been in Surrey. Precisely who this prettily adorned quantity that’d decided to stop in to talk with him of late was, Ron couldn’t rightly pin down. She’d given him her name twice now -

-for it’d been lost to the fog the first time, but names were just labels and didn’t give a rightways measure of Who.Who she was, her whys and wherefores, her meanings and reasons and motives for cropping up where she had, when she had-- Those things were still mysteries to young Ron Kray, late of Long Grove; all round rapscallion and, to hear the doctors tell it, psychopath.

They were wrong about that, Ronnie knew from the off.

Though they’d never believe it of him, he was something of a man of letters; well and widely read despite lacking academic inclinations. He knew what psychopathy was and was not, and it was not Ron Kray. Not by a long margin. And perhaps, he wondered as he weighed Lizbef’s talk of barriers, she knew that of him too. Why else would she be content to not only come on in that first time and settle with him, but to come back again, and again, and again. Perhaps, just as he was nothing like what his doctors thought of him; perhaps she was nothing like them.

‘--Since...’ Numb as Ron’s face felt for all the effort he put into forming expressions, something of a flicker came on around his lips. What it looked like beyond a flutter of muscle beneath skin he couldn’t say. The passing of a thought perhaps, reacted to viscerally. His hands moved with it, fingers curling closed as they were brought together in front of him; the coalescence of a concept given movement.
