Where do you keep your phone at night? Normally, it sits under the pillow that Girt uses when he's here, but if he spends the night, then I just sit it on my bedside table.

She liked to be "technical" about it in calling her branch Neo-Nazism, but she was still a fucking Nazi, I had her explain her way of thinking plenty because I was trying to understand that she wasn't politically evil but never did. She didn't believe Jews deserved to die, but Hitler and his doctrine were her political idols. Which is evil, if you somehow forgot.

If you’ve ever been to another country, what was the best thing you did there? I haven't. :(

What’s the worst sickness you’ve ever had? Some fucking insane stomach virus I had as a teen, I'd say. I will never forget hurling my guts up past the point where only bile was coming out. The abdominal cramps were mental.

Is your favorite animal something you can have as a pet? In certain countries, but thankfully not here in North America. I aggressively wish that it was illegal everywhere, like there is no case of you giving a meerkat everything it needs to be well, all the while saving your house and personal relations with how territorial they are.

Are you good at gardening? To be fair I've never really tried. I did help Colleen's in-laws with their personal garden quite a bit one summer, and I can tell you I FUCKING hated it, because of how out of shape I was but even moreso because of my hyperhidrosis, but I've never tried it on my own. I'd actually quite like to get into plants, and I'd LOVE to grow specifically berries when I have my own place, but I have strong doubts I'd care enough to maintain everything. Depression already makes that challenging with other things.

What was the last classic novel you read? Did you enjoy it? The Yearling, I loved it.

After a lot of debating I decided that Olivia is actually Jasper and Mouna’s daughter--if you don’t know them they’re two older OCs that I’ve had for a while! (I figured I might as well give her parents already existing within the ATS-verse anyway, and I planned on Jasper and Mouna getting together and having a child somewhere down the line so it fits.)

When she was born, Olivia was very weak, and most healers feared that she would not make it—similar to how weak and frail Jasper was when he was born. Because of this, Jasper and Mouna are both fiercely overprotective of her (Jasper more intensely) so she was sort of suffocated by their attention. She grew up within the Spinelrose Guild and was treated more delicately by the rest of the guild members, especially because of how slow her development was and how often she was ill as a child. She originally had a difficult time making friends because Jasper was so afraid she’d get into trouble and get hurt, and the other kids didn’t want to accidentally put her in danger. Olivia was pretty isolated from her peers as a kid, and that frustrated her, because she didn’t want to be treated differently from everybody else just because of her fragility. Unfortunately she was never really strong enough to make her point, and just ended up being coddled by the guild as a result.

As she developed into a teenager, Olivia eventually outgrew her sickly physique and started to become stronger, both mentally and physically. She started to speak up about her parents’ treatment of her more—she knows that they just want to keep her safe, but she feels smothered by their hovering tendencies. Mouna eventually realizes how important this is to her and starts to back off, realizing how strong her daughter has become. Jasper, however...it’s harder for him to let go lol because she’s his only child and he knows how difficult it was to grow up as the weak link, the one who got ostracized because of their general health and well-being. It doesn’t help that Olivia is very clumsy and gets into little accidents all the time, which just makes his stress skyrocket.

Even worse, Olivia is a fire elemental, which is considered to be one of the most dangerous simply because of how destructive it is without proper control. When Olivia was a kid Jasper forbade her from practicing any of her magic, too worried that she’d end up hurting herself. Of course, Olivia has a bit of a rebellious streak, so she tried it once by herself and inevitably ended up burning the side of her face with her magic. (By now the scar is almost faded, but you can still see it.) Both of her parents flipped their lids, and Olivia was so terrified that she decided to never use her magic again, viewing it as a curse. Mouna tries to tell her that her magic is a blessing, something that encompasses life, and that she just wasn’t ready to use it so freely without any training. But Olivia is insistent—scarred both in the literal and metaphorical sense, she refuses to use her magic, scared that she’s going to hurt herself again, or worse, somebody else. 

As the years pass Olivia starts to feel more and more unsatisfied with her current life—she likes the guild, likes her friends and her family, but she feels as if there’s more she could be doing with her life. Since she’s refrained from using her magic all these years, and because of how much of a klutz she is normally, she’s not really a strong fighter, and is pretty useless on guild missions. Seeing the rest of her guildmates put their all into what they do, and being able to succeed in it, drives her to eventually seek escape and try to start off with a clean slate. When she turns 14, Olivia decides that she’s going to leave the guild and travel to someplace new in an attempt to be more independent and maybe find a purpose for herself.

Of course she realizes that if she tells her parents this they’ll probably refuse her, so she corners her uncle Terrence instead. Seeing her drive, Terrence decides he’s going to escort her to make sure she arrives safely. Olivia initially refuses because this is something she wants to do on her own, but Terrence warns her that the world is a dangerous place, and since she doesn’t know how to fight or use her magic the trip would be near suicidal if she went on her own. Terrence tells her the best option is going to stay with Spinelrose’s sister guild, Amethystus, and receive proper training in order to hone her magic and her fighting skills. That way she’d still have a direct line with Spinelrose in case something goes wrong, but she’d be far enough away to be independent.

Olivia prepares to sneak out in the middle of the night, but she gets caught by both Jasper and Mouna (because Terrence is a good uncle and he told them lmao). Fearing that they’re going to stop her, Olivia stands up for herself and makes it clear that this is something she needs to do. Much to her shock, Jasper and Mouna encourage her to follow her dreams and come home a new woman. It’s a very soft moment when they all hug each other goodbye, and there’s lots of tears :’) Olivia leaves home knowing that her parents are worried, but they’ll support her decisions because they love her.

After their crazy trip (where Olivia second guesses herself a million times and wonders if she can really survive out in a world this chaotic), they finally arrive at the Amethystus Guild! Olivia literally bumps into Ginni and from there, they form an instant close friendship. Ginni respects Olivia’s desire to be independent and is somewhat envious she made the decision to leave her guild in order to become stronger. Olivia admires Ginni’s confident personality and her fearlessness. Together they get into LOTS of trouble lol, mostly led by Ginni who is a notorious troublemaker within the guild, with Olivia just along for the ride.

During all this, Olivia meets the guild’s official blacksmith and, upon seeing the incredible things he can create by using fire magic, starts to rethink her opinions about her own “cursed” fire magic. The blacksmith, normally a very closed off, grumpy, and rude person, notices Olivia’s conflict about fire, and decides he’s going to train her in order to help her overcome her fear. Through a lot of practice and very intense sessions, Olivia is finally able to confront her trauma and move past it—leading to her discovery that she’s a talented natural at using elemental magic, finding that it comes very easy to her and is something she can control without thinking too much. This is a rare skill, for normally it takes an elemental years of practice and training to have perfect control over their magic. On top of that, her fire is very pretty and beautiful to look at, a reflection of her soul. Her master berates her from hiding something so beautiful and pure for so long lol

Olivia finds passion in blacksmithing, and trains under her master in order to create beautiful and powerful weapons. She does get burned a few more times during this, leading to some relapses, but her master tells her it’s part of the job and something that every elemental will come across: they aren’t always the perfect masters of their magic, and sometimes can hurt themselves without meaning to. But being able to understand what went wrong and how to fix it will make her stronger. Within a couple years Olivia flourishes and evolves into one of the guild’s most fiercest fighters, with an excellent handle on her abilities!

Olivia and Ginni grow up together in Amethystus, and are pretty much inseparable. When Ginni gets kidnapped by the Forces and is missing for several weeks, Olivia is beside herself with worry. After Ginni returns with Kaz in tow, Olivia is one of the first people to accept him and trust him fully, because she believes in Ginni more than anybody else. (Kaz develops a soft spot towards Olivia because of this, and is forever grateful for her support.) Over time Olivia starts to realize just how awful Kaz’s life at the Forces was, and grows very sympathetic towards his situation. She understands wanting to start over somewhere new with a clean slate, though Kaz’s circumstances are much worse than hers, because she still has a loving family and home to return to someday. Olivia becomes determined to make Amethystus a home like that for Kaz, as well as Hiro, who they discuss recruiting to their side from the Forces. As Kaz continues to reveal more of his past, as well as Hiro’s, Olivia and Ginni both get very gung ho about going to fetch Hiro LOL because they both want him to be safe (though Kaz assures them Hiro isn’t in any sort of danger, being the colonel, as well as too intelligent to put himself in trouble).

Kaz meets with Hiro, who was actually sent out on a mission to fetch him, and they negotiate Hiro acting as a double agent for Amethystus to spy on the Forces. Hiro had already been planning on leaving the Forces at some point, so he sees this as a perfect opportunity to get back at them for years of mistreatment. Over the course of the next several months, Hiro routinely reports back to Amethystus of the Forces’ plans, their current hideouts, and everything he knows about the higher ups. During all this he and Olivia meet, and at this point Olivia has started to refer to the colonel as ‘Hiro’ in her head, because it’s too confusing for her to call him the colonel, and she reasons that since Ginni gave Kaz his name she might as well give Hiro his. (Also because she believes that he’s a true ‘hero’ for enduring all of that suffering for so long, so it fits ;D) She calls him Hiro by sheer accident, but luckily he takes to the name well haha and they start to grow closer >:’) Hiro comments on how close Kaz and Ginni have become and the two start betting on when they’ll get together lol

Eventually Hiro’s position as a double agent is discovered by Mallary and so he finally breaks away from the Forces (and Mallary’s manipulation) and starts living permanently at the guild. Olivia’s pretty happy about this. She can’t explain why but she feels very safe and at ease around him, and she’s the person he’s the gentlest and softest around—unbeknownst to her, this is because he’s fallen in love with her, but she’s completely oblivious to his feelings. She’s pretty dense when it comes to romantic stuff like this whoops. Olivia finds Hiro’s intelligence incredible and likes that he’s such a skilled fighter despite not being that strong physically. Hiro likes watching her do her blacksmithing duties and always has expert things to say on her craftsmanship. They get along very well! Olivia’s never felt more at home than with Ginni, Kaz, and Hiro, and likes the tight knit little group they’ve formed. She becomes very fond and protective of them and, upon realizing how important they are to her and how much she’s changed because of them and because of her decision to join Amethystus, she decides to cut her hair as another sign of her growth as a person, and as a sign of change! She finally discovers what she wants to do: become a master blacksmith, and work alongside her friends to protect everything they can, including taking down the Forces to set free all of the people forced to work for them, and bring peace to the land.

When the time comes to finally take down the Forces, Olivia starts to develop feelings for Hiro as well, though it takes her a while to figure out because she’s never really been in love before, and mistakes a lot of her attraction for simple admiration. As Hiro continues to put his life on the line for their group and do anything he can to protect them, Olivia starts to discover that maybe she wouldn’t mind spending the rest of her life with him. There’s a point where Hiro gets injured so badly in battle he’s certainly going to bleed out, so he pleads for her to use her fire magic to cauterize his wound. Olivia’s trauma comes crashing back in and her worst fears are confirmed: her magic will end up hurting the people most important to her. Hiro tells her that by doing this, she’s going to save him, that her magic is life itself. Encouraged by his words, Olivia burns Hiro to save him, though it’s an extremely painful thing for her to do :’( But it’s at this moment she realizes that she definitely is in love with him, and would sacrifice anything for him.

Not long after that, Mallary attacks, enraged, and accuses Olivia of stealing everything important away from her. It’s a really emotional battle;; Mallary basically vents out about being the one left behind, the only one who couldn’t find a happy ending, and who had the only people she cared about taken. She says some really nasty things to Olivia about Hiro lol and this really makes Olivia mad, so they basically duke it out over Mallary’s twisted feelings for Kaz and her perceived ownership of Hiro. And Olivia’s just like. Bitch you don’t own him!! He’s not an object or a toy for you to play with!! Yeah. It’s nuts

After the grand battle with the Forces comes to an end and everything is resolved, Olivia decides to confess her feelings to Hiro, but it doesn’t...really go as planned. Hiro gently rejects her, but Olivia takes it the wrong way, still not realizing how head over heels for her he is. Shortly after this, Hiro and Kaz part ways with the guild, deciding to go on their own personal journeys of self discovery. During the year they’re gone, Olivia laments over her feelings for Hiro, miserable that she didn’t realize how she felt until it was too late, and miserable because she might never see him again. Eventually she tries to move on from that, but Ginni repeatedly tells her that Hiro is literally holding a torch for her lmao and that she shouldn’t let it go so quickly. Olivia protests constantly and strives to work harder to become a better blacksmith and stronger guild member, trying to put her feelings aside and ignore them. 

Of course, when she and Ginni eventually reunite with Kaz and Hiro, Olivia realizes that shit I’m still in love with him and my feelings haven’t gone away, they’ve just grown stronger during the year we were apart;; luckily for her Hiro’s gone through a lot of self reflection and feels ready to be in a relationship with her, so, after a rocky road of awkward confessions and pouring out their feelings, they FINALLY get together. 

The four of them go on a journey together! There’s some problems when Hiro runs into his childhood friend and first love, Lorelai, but in the end he shows he’s pretty damn dedicated to Olivia and it’s super soft. I just. I just love them so m u c h //shakes fists

Extra personality traits:

-Very compassionate and caring about others—she’s a very motherly type. She’s able to get people to open up to her easily because of how friendly she is. She also settles disputes within the guild often, being the mediator between arguments

-A social butterfly. Probably the most social one out of the group, and the one most used to conversing with other people

-She’s got a lot of self-esteem issues because of her upbringing (and really, I promise Jasper is not a bad parent!! He’s just concerned), but she’s learned how to handle it better. She’s definitely way more confident than she was before!

-Tends to be very indecisive when it comes to big decisions, and is hesitant about fighting—though she will put her all into it if the stakes are high. She CAN whoop your ass 

-Super passionate about blacksmithing! It’s her true calling, and something she throws herself into fully. She’s very artful with her work and makes gorgeous pieces, and tends to ramble on about the specifics even when nobody understands lol

-A bit oblivious and airheaded sometimes. She’s completely unaware of several of the guild members’ feelings for her, including Hiro’s.

-VERY affectionate. Because she was isolated from other kids as a child, she’s very touchy feely and loves expressing her affection through casual touches. And lots of hugs!

-Since she’s the sweetest and nicest person in the group, she is terrifying when she’s angry. She’s super protective of her friends and won’t hesitate to leap into action to keep them safe, often getting very fierce when she does so

-She hates being alone. Being raised in an atmosphere with so many people around, she isn’t used to being by herself, and her instant source of comfort is being near others

-Isn’t afraid to tease her friends or state her opinion when it really counts

Deity!Seventeen AU - Hoshi, God Of Festivities

Author’s note- I’ve actually planned out an entire au for like,,,which gods all of seventeen would be, so if you wanna see more for any reason just send me an ask for who you’d like to see lmao

Hoshi is one of the most well known gods

Each god has a festival dedicated to them during a day in the year, and Hoshi’s is the most grand

Think Mardi Gras in New Orleans

The streets get completely decked out in decorations and lights, people set up food stalls and knick knack tables, along with game booths and more

Its the WHOLE SHABANG

He usually just improves the overall mood of any celebration, like even for a little kid’s tiny birthday party he makes sure that each person involved is having as much fun as possible

He’s one of the gods most heavily associated with humans and because of that he’s one of the most revered/loved

Even if he doesn’t show himself often, people can often sense his presence when he’s watching over a celebration because it can go from boring and borderline awkward to downright jovial

And now to you

You had always liked the annual festivals for the gods

They always had special food and games and when you were younger you had memories of winning prizes and goldfish from the lil game stalls (you still had some of the stuffed animals lining your shelves in your room)

But,,,at the same time,,festivals were meant to be spent with many people

So while you had always loved the festivities,,this year you were…,disappointed

Because of some Typical School Drama, you had found yourself friendless, which was a kick to the teeth on its own, but now you couldn’t even attend the year’s biggest event because you were too scared of seeming like a loser by going by yourself

You had actually planned for this to be the one time in your life you missed Soonyoung’s festival,,even though it had always been your favorite, simply because you didn’t want to embarrass yourself

But your parents downright refused

They wouldn’t accept any excuse for you to miss you favorite time out of the year,,,,so, that’s how you found yourself in the town square, alone just outside of the crowd and surrounded by glowing lanterns and laughter

And okay it was…,, just a bit heartbreaking

Here you were, at the festival that you had made so many good memories at every year,,but you almost wanted to cry because you were all alone and apart from everyone else who were having fun and enjoying every aspect of the party with their loved ones and friends

Meanwhile, Soonyoung had sensed something was up

He’s a god of festivities so of course he naturally has a perfect read of the emotions swirling in the air around him, especially at the festival dedicated to him

And he had been enjoying himself for the most part; he didn’t directly attend his own celebration in human form seeing as Jihoon had told him it was an exceedingly bad idea (Jihoon: if you show up in your physical form you’re gonna end up getting yourself drunk and making a repeat of the festival in 1838   hoshi: but that wasn’t that bad-   jihoon: you caught a food stall on fire. Four times   hoshi: ,,,fine), so he decided to just watch over it

And then,,,apart from all the emotions of joy and fun,,,there was something else

Disappointment, withdrawal, and overwhelming sadness,, all emanating from you who had resigned themself to a bench just outside of the town square

And in true hoshi spur-of-the-moment fashion, he decided to say screw it to Jihoon’s warning and made his way to you

You had been scrolling through your phone, refreshing the same four apps and your mood only worsening because apparently every single social media page was overflowing with pictures of the festival. The same festival in which you were alone at and you weren’t going to cry about it even though your eyes were definitely burning and you really wanted to cry because hell this was pathetic-

But then suddenly someone was sitting next to you and leaning forwards so they were in your line of sight

And even worse it was a cute boy and fuck your eyes were probably red and hell you looked so stupid maybe he wanted to tell you it was pathetic that you were here all alone and you knew that he wouldn’t and that it was just your mind fucking with you but what if-

But he simply asked if you were enjoying the festival with a soft smile on his face

(you weren’t sure what it was about him because usually that question in this scenario would,,,upset you more because cmon of COURSE you weren’t enjoying it but. Somehow you felt comforted)

So you just answer with a shrug and look down at your feet, saying,,,well not really because..,,, its no fun when you’re alone

And you nearly jump out of your skin when he grabs your hand and pulls you to your feet, flashing you a beaming smile as he starts pulling you back towards the crowd and hes like well good thing you aren’t alone anymore!!! Cmon what do you want to do? let’s buy some food!!

Part of you is really freaked out because wtf you don’t even know this guy why are you letting this happen ??? but another part,,,,a much larger part,,,is kinda happy??? Like this guy had seen you were upset and was trying to cheer you up and his eyes were so genuine,,,,,,plus he was really cute

He was also buying you food how could you say no

Somehow being around him was making you forget about all the drama that had hung over you before

But wait shit you dont even know his name whoops better ask for that

And so u ask and,,,when he replies with Hoshi ur like okay thats really cute omg but like internally because you’d prolly jump off a bridge if you said that out loud

Listening to you attentively and following up your dumb jokes and jesus christ he’s so extra but in like,,,the good way

like ,,,at one of the game stalls he was just like BET YOU 20 BUCKS I CAN WIN THE GIANT HAMSTER PLUSHIE and ur like BET YOU 20 BUCKS YOU CANT

And of course hoshi doesn’t like losing so he might have used his godly powers just a bit,,,and you’re like damn oh well a bet’s a bet and you’re digging money out of your pocket and normally he’d GLADLY take money but

,,,this time he couldn’t accept it because hell he was trying to help you have fun and he wasn’t accepting offerings rn, so he was just like nono that’s fine actually here have the hamster-

And youre like but we made a bet

Him: hmm,,,,right,,how about you give me a smile instead?

But Hell u were NOT expecting that and you feel your face getting hot and hes just like woahhh cuTE and you’re like HUSH GIVE ME A SECOND

And after going around the festival,,, Hoshi buying you snacks you looked at for longer than a second,,winning you cheap game stall prizes and even a bag of goldfish,,,you couldn’t help but think that somehow this had become one of the best festivals you’ve ever been to

Not a moment had passed where you weren’t having fun or smiling and you knew that it was all thanks to Hoshi

And so you were just a bit reluctant to head back home, even when the last firework show had ended and your mom told you to start heading back over text,,,you just wanted this to last forever

But you tell hoshi that you have to head home,, and he does look a bit sad but hes like ill walk you home!! And you joke like what do u just wanna see me more lmao and hes like yeah of course???

Cue you almost choking on air because Hell what the Fu k that was too genuine sounding what is this????? Feeling??? No none of that in this house

You cough to hide the flustered noise you made,,,and then you were walking in the direction of your house, a bag of goldfish held carefully in your arms and with Hoshi walking next to you and talking excitedly about his friend Woozi

Sometimes you’ll leave stupid lil gifts at Soonyoung’s shrine like a little trinket at a garage sale that reminded you of him and he always gushes about it to the other gods like loOOK my human friend got me a THING do any of your followers do that???? No????? Well guess im just the best-

He also occasionally shows up to walk you home from school bc he’s impatient and wants to talk with you bc cmon you’re the most fun human he’s met-  well,,, fun in the sense that he knows you, and he doesn’t know many other humans as well as he knows you

And plus you always laugh at his jokes and the other gods don’t

But,,,as the days tick closer to prom which,,you were actually getting quite excited about because hell you actually??? Had a trustworthy date because Soonyoung reminded you constantly that he would show up,,so you couldn’t help but believe him

Alas, Jihoon has started catching on to Soonyoung’s feelings towards you,,and he’s seen gods that have fallen for humans before and it usually ends one of two ways

One: very very good, everyone ends up happy and theres a new god in the land

Two: very very bad, either the god has to watch the human die or the god has to abandon the human and it hurts both parties involved

And though Jihoon might pretend not to worry about the other gods,,,he doesn’t want to see Soonyoung hurt

So,,,though he doesn’t want to,,,as the god of reason he felt required to pull Soonyoung aside,,

And Jihoon explains like,, Soonyoung i know you like this human a lot but,,please think about what you’re dealing with

Soonyoung’s just like i know what im dealing with im dealing with a lovely person

Jihoon just sighs,,,,like no i mean seriously. Before you leap, think-  are you going to get tired of this human as soon as another interesting one stumbles along? Are you going to accidentally involve this human in matters they can’t control? We’re gods, Soonyoung, and though it’s fun to be around humans, it’s dangerous. So think about what you’re going to do before either of you get hurt

And soonyoung just,,,sobers up completely and he can’t help but,,,realize that he was just a bit caught up in you…

He couldn’t imagine hurting you?? Thinking back to when he first met you,,it broke his heart to have learned why you had been crying all alone at his festival and,,,,he really, really didn’t want to be the cause of that, ever…

So he decided; he would stay away from you for now,,,but if he still missed you after the time passed, he would see you again

But even then he didn’t realize that he was making choices before thinking

When Soonyoung didn’t show up at your house for a few days, you thought nothing of it

He was a god with duties to fulfill; you understood that and so you weren’t upset or anything when he was gone for a few days. Of course, playing video games and doing homework alone was less fun without him there,,but you could manage

You trusted him to keep his promise to go to prom with you,,and you even allowed yourself to get fully excited. You had even picked out a dress that was actually expensive,,and even tho ur not like,,a cheesy person….

Interally ur like,,,,,i hope  he thinks its pretty but right after that ur like wtf is this????a drama?????

Regardless, no amount of internal irony or cynicism can stop you from excitedly waiting at your meeting spot the night of the prom,,,just a little bench that you two would eat lunch at together on weekends

And you were all dressed up, your hair styled up all fancy and your makeup done by someone way more equipped with liquid eyeliner than you'd ever be,, and you can’t help but smile as the clock ticks closer and closer to the time you agreed on

Then 7pm hits, and hes still not there, but you don’t worry because hey even gods can’t make it on the dot right?

Then….7:30….8…...9

As each minute ticks by, you feel the pain in your chest grow,,,of course when you had first met him, you had expected this outcome, but after all the time that had passed you had really grown to trust him

When the clock finally hits 10, you swallow the lump in your throat and head back home, holding back your tears so that you could at least tell a decent lie to your parents that you had fun with your friends

Meanwhile

Soonyoung had been thinking, more than any carefree god of partying usually would, about you

Because,, while he understood Jihoon’s warning...he really didn’t like staying away from you

He missed hearing you rant about your teachers and the stupid questions people asked in class, he missed how you would fall backwards whenever you laughed really hard and how, if he told the perfect joke, your laugh would turn loud and goofy. He missed how you would pretend to be annoyed when he whined about how you weren’t paying attention to him,,,he just missed you

Once again, he acts like you just gave him the fucking world n for a moment you wonder if its okay for a god to be so easily impressed but you brush it off as he starts explaining

And its basically him repeating the speech Jihoon gave him and you’re nodding along until he’s like well I decided to say screw the rules like i mean i know it’s kinda weird for a god to fall in love with a human but hey whatever right-

Whenever you’re upset he can obviously sense it and he always tries his best to cheer you up, and if its something that a simple joke won’t fix, he’s always good at listening

What is one thing that people often misinterpret about Minerva and why do you disagree?

OHO BOY. i’m glad you asked.

i have pretty strong opinions about minerva’s character, honestly, she’s just so strongly and particularly developed in my head that i get saltier than usual when i see misinterpretations of her character, so this is….definitely something i’ve thought about lmao. 

really, the biggest mistake people make is taking one of her attributes and just….stretching it too far. this can go either way - either someone will take the fact that she’s secretly amused by the antics of troublemakers, and use it to imply that she allowed a lot of rule-breaking to go unpunished, or someone will make her out to be the kind of person who will mock students and use magic as a punishment. so she’s either too strict or too lenient, and both annoy the hell out of me. i’mma talk about both of these sides.

minerva as secretly lenient.

i just went on a little rant in the tags about the former recently, but i’ll rehash it again, why not. the most common iteration of this is the idea that minerva secretly knew that the marauders were becoming unregistered animagi, and just?? didn’t care??? or worse, that she helped them in an underhanded way, like giving them information about animagi in answer to “hypothetical” questions, knowing full well what they’re doing. 

yeah, no. that wouldn’t happen. while minerva would be proud of them for supporting remus, and she might honestly have been willing to teach them if they’d come to her and asked, she would never, ever condone any unsupervised attempts to become animagi. why? because it is both incredibly dangerous and super illegal. unregistered animagi go to azkaban, and those attempting to become animagi are in danger of permanently mutating themselves if they get it wrong. if minerva found out what they were doing, she’d be livid with them. she wouldn’t report them to the ministry - she doesn’t want them in legal trouble if she can avoid it - but you can bet she’d strip them of every privilege she can think of and take away so many house points there’d be no chance of gryffindor winning the cup that year. the idea that minerva mcgonagall would turn a blind eye to, or even support, students engaging in a dangerous and illegal activity, is ridiculous. 

that’s not to say i don’t understand where this idea comes from. she did, after all, turn a blind eye to some of fred and george’s antics - but not until order of the phoenix, when they used them to actively oppose umbridge. it’s true that minerva is willing to allow rule-breaking when it serves a greater good (or, rather, opposes a greater evil). but fred and george’s pranks weren’t generally dangerous, nothing more than a trip to the hospital wing couldn’t cure anyway. botched animagus transformations can be permanently disfiguring. it’s a different field altogether.

the more general manifestation of this misinterpretation is that minerva just happens to be aware of a lot more troublemaking around hogwarts than she lets on, and lets a lot of it slide. i don’t like this idea partly because, again, it undermines the strictness she’s famous for, and partly because it makes her out as sort of omniscient? when we see throughout the series that she is often shocked to discover what the golden trio has been up to. in chamber of secrets she goes over a bit faint when she hears the full tale of their exploits. and she never knew that they really had been smuggling a dragon in philosopher’s stone, or she would have taken way more than 150 house points. it’s okay for her to not know things!! it’s boring to assume that she just somehow knows Everything About All Her Students when the truth is she’s been fooled more than once. 

so anyway yeah. minerva is amused by mischief-makers, but that doesn’t mean she won’t punish them for breaking rules. her strictness is a big part of her personality. making her secretly Super Chill might be fun, but it’s not canon. 

minerva as mocking and discriminatingly strict, and also using magic as a punishment.

okay, so the other side of this coin is this thing i’ve seen, not so much in general headcanon posts but more often in fanfic, where minerva’s strictness gets twisted into something almost malicious. and sometimes it’s written as kind of heroic, like, yeah this student totally deserved this treatment, go mcgonagall, which doesn’t make it any better.

example: i read a fic once that was otherwise pretty good about her portrayal, but when teaching a slytherin class, she a) charmed draco malfoy’s hair to be girlishly long after he made fun of a girl’s haircut, and b) threatened to use pansy parkinson as a guinea pig for their next transfiguration demonstration if she continued to act out. 

this sort of thing bothers me a lot. partially because minerva doesn’t use magic as a punishment. she says to crouch-as-moody - we never use transfiguration as a punishment! which is absolutely true. not transfiguration or any other magic. she has three means of punishment: deducting house points, giving detention, and revoking privileges. all very standard academic, right? she’s swift to hand out punishments, but she doesn’t get creative with those punishments. her job isn’t to find new and humiliating ways to punish her students. she doesn’t abuse that power. 

and there’s a deeper meaning to it than just not deviating from the standard ways of dealing with misbehavior - minerva does not want to model the idea that it’s acceptable to use magic to punish someone who does something you disagree with. especially as an authority figure. like, if she can go around hexing students who break rules, what’s to stop the students from hexing each other? what’s to stop them from growing up believing that it’s okay to use magic to punish, say, your own children? she views using magic as a punishment on a nonconsenting minor as 1) a violation of what magic should be and 2) basically abusive. so no, her response to misbehavior is not to use magic or even seriously threaten to use magic on a student.

and the other thing here is that, like…..at least with draco……..her response is calculated to humiliate. that doesn’t sit right with me. minerva is snarky, absolutely. she’s super sarcastic (though she makes at least a token attempt to rein it in when speaking to students, generally). but she’s not mocking?? i mean. to incompetent adults, yes. to people she hates, absolutely. but to students? she doesn’t look for ways to humiliate them. she might be sarcastic to prove a point, she might turn a student’s ill-advised behavior back on them (i’m thinking here of that one post i made imagining her calling ron mr. wazlib after he turns in an essay with his faulty spell-checking quill, which is maybe a tad mocking but only in that she turns his own mistake against him, and she doesn’t do it meanly). now, that isn’t to say she doesn’t end up humiliating students when she gets short with them - for instance, snapping at neville about how he shouldn’t reveal to students from other schools that he can’t perform a simple switching spell was probably p humiliating - but that’s. that’s a bit different, isn’t? criticizing someone for their low efficacy might leave them feeling humiliated, but it isn’t calculated to get the rest of their peers to laugh at them. changing draco’s appearance is. and i don’t think she’d do that.

plus i should note that in the fic i’m using as an example, she only exhibited that sort of harshness towards slytherins. her strictness isn’t targeted like that. she’s explicitly characterized as fair, treating students from all for houses with the same level of sternness. she may have to be more harsh with slytherins who act out in malicious ways, but she doesn’t unfairly target them.

i think that’s…….pretty much the gist of it. the point is that a lot of her mischaracterization comes from exaggerating a certain trait of hers to the point where it cancels out other key traits (rebelliousness cancels strictness, strictness cancels fairness). i think people don’t realize how complex she is?? which is understandable, given that it’s easy to see her as sort of one-note if you read her part in the books in a very surface-level way, but she really isn’t. she isn’t a caricature of any of her traits. and she deserves more thought than that.
