YALL HEAR ME OUT

OK BUT LISTEN. Imagine that in botw, when link tries to get his memories back from the sheikah slate, he doesn’t get them. There’s just nothing. Not even a vague feeling of nostalgia. Instead, he gets back memories of different lives totally accidentally. more under the cut bc this got long. Whoops

So, memories. Like, he’ll just be walkin around hyrule field and stumbles upon the remains of what used to be lonlon ranch. And suddenly, he has a familiar yet unknown tune stuck in his head, and he’s thinking of bright red hair and long naps in the hay. But you know, he brushes that off, bc what the heck is that shit. So he keeps walkin or smthing. Then maybe he ends up in like zora’s domain or smthin. And u know he’s just swimmin around w/ his new zora armor!!!!! When suddenly he comes upon a lake named Mikau and a subsequent one named Lulu, and suddenly this kinda dread settles in his stomach that he’s never really felt before, like he needs to run, to hide, to do something, anything. He smells the ocean, though he’s almost miles from any body of saltwater, and his fingers ghost over the strings on a guitar - an instrument he’s never played before, let alone probably seen since before the calamity. and now he’s mildly concerned, bc what the heck, what the actual heck is this. Nah. nope. he walks away from zora’s domain, and the feeling fades. He forgets about it for a few days before he makes it to the forgotten temple, and that giant ass statue of Hylia. And then suddenly he’s getting vertigo, even though he’s on the ground, and he sees a flash of blond hair and blue eyes behind closed eyelids and the name ‘sleepyhead’ is echoing when he opens them. He’s shaking when he comes back to himself, because this is weirding him out, this is SO weirding him out. What are these things. So he lingers a little bit, curious, and he gets a little more back - a bright red bird trapped behind wooden panels, a tornado, the color green - before he flees again, because it’s so overwhelming. He can’t sleep for a while afterward even though he’s tired, because he knows something’s going to come up in his dreams. And come up it does - a man on a black horse stands before him menacingly while lightning cracks in the background, and he gets the feeling that he’s done that before. Seen it before. Lived it before. And he jolts awake feeling anxious, almost expecting to hear someone calling his name. The rest of his nights are dreamless. Eventually, he gets used to the weird flashes. He doesn’t even have to be particularly doing anything for them to happen; sometimes he’s just sitting underneath a tree, and suddenly he’s sitting on a ranch watching goats for a few minutes before fading back to reality. Sometimes, when he hears musicians play at stables or in towns, he feels the urge to play along, though on what, he’s not sure. One, he walked into the korok village and wondered when the kokiri had changed, where the old village had gone, and what kokiri were/how he knew there had at one point been a village in the first place. He doesn’t know when he started counting, but he counts the days between blood moons. Always three days before, he begins the countdown: dawn of the first day, 72 hours remaining. And slowly but surely, he gets used to it. Up until he finds all the shrines, that is, and is directed back to the forgotten temple to receive a reward. And he’s standing there under the giant statue of hylia again, his mind reeling again with images of a life never lived but not quite remembered. He comes back to reality to find that he’s kneeling in front of a chest, and he forces himself to open it before he has time to fall back into what he’d been seeing(living) before. When he opens it, though, he’s awestruck. It’s just clothes - a tunic, a hat. Some boots. Green. Simple. Made mostly of cotton, easy to wash and quick to dry. But god, it’s so familiar. He puts it on immediately, pulling it on over his champion tunic because he’s too impatient. He wants to wear it now, he doesn’t have time to change, and immediately he remembers. He was a kokiri, once. And a goatherd, and a lazy schoolboy, and even a conductor. Memories click into place without overwhelming him as they had been over the past few months - they’re just there, as though he’d already experienced them, even though he’s never seen most of the people or places in them in his life. And then there’s Zelda - tons of different versions of her, tons of different women but all exactly the same at the core. He can tell which one is his, but he can’t remember how he knows. And when he’s wrenched out of his reverie because his legs eventually give out, he realizes he’s been standing there for maybe a day and just thinking about zelda or smthin. learning abt her, remembering her, falling in love with her all over again. He wants to kick himself for wasting time but he lets it go just this once because he can feel something warm coming from the hylia statue, and he remembers her, and thanks her and the monks she sent to guide him before he goes off to find a place to sleep. and idk, i haven’t beat the game yet, but from what i’ve heard, if you’ve got all the memories zelda’s like “do you really remember me?” and stuff, so i’m picturing her doing that, and link just saying something corny like “how could i ever have forgotten you” before hugging her or some shit. I dont know man i didn’t really think this far in advance. really more than half of this was just bullshit lol.
