What’s new in this release?

Aspose team is pleased to announce the release of Aspose.Tasks for Java 17.8.0. This release includes new feature of providing support for rate scale information in MPP files. It also includes several improvements in terms of bug fixes that further add to the overall stability of the API. From this month’s release, support for JDK 1.6 has been discontinued. From this release onwards, Aspose.Tasks for Java won’t support JDK 1.6. All Aspose customers, who are using older version of JDK and want to use this latest version of API, need to upgrade their Java version to meet the minimum requirement of API i.e. JDK 1.7 or higher. Aspose.Tasks for Java already supported reading/writing rate scale information of resource assignment for MPP 2013 and below versions. With this release, the API now supports reading and writing rate scale data for MSP 2013 and above file formats. This is as illustrated in the code sample on blog announcement page. SAS Drive is the web-based hub (that is, the single point of access) for SAS Viya solutions.

The main container for your analytic work is a project. A basic Model Studio project contains a data source, a pipeline that you create, and related project metadata. Remember that a pipeline is a structured workflow of analytic actions that is represented as a diagram. In the pipeline diagram, a node represents each action. Some examples of project metadata are the project type, project creator, creation date, and last update. A project can also have multiple pipelines and pipeline comparison results.

Data Sources and CAS With SAS Viya, you can access a variety of data sources, such as relational and unstructured data, Hadoop, and various file formats (for example, XML, JSON, CSV). These data sources can be located in local or external databases as well as in the cloud. Persisted in-memory data is a unique SAS Viya feature. This is the shift away from using flat files and external data sets to a strategy of using persisted, pre-loaded data tables. In SAS Viya, all data typically go through an I/O conversion process only once and can be reused as many times as needed thereafter, without incurring the same expense of conversion into a binary, machine-level format. SAS Viya data are either stored within the RAM of a single machine (and run in SMP mode) or within a shared pool of allocated memory created from several networked machines as part of a common memory grid (which enables Massively Parallel Processing, or MPP mode). That pooled memory array is an integral part of CAS. After the data are loaded into CAS, all processing instructions execute very quickly against the pre-converted, in-memory data.

Caslibs All data is available to the CAS server through caslibs, and all operations in the CAS server that use data are performed using caslibs. A caslib provides access to files in a data source, such as a database or a file system directory, and to in-memory tables. Access controls are associated with caslibs to manage access to data. You can think of a caslib as a container with two areas where data is referenced: a physical space that includes the source data or files, and an in-memory space that makes the data available for CAS action processing. Authorized users can add or manage caslibs with the CASLIB statement. Caslib authorization is set by your administrator. In some instances, such as when you copy native CAS tables that are not in-memory, a caslib is required although data are not copied to the caslib.

Loading Data to a Caslib You can load a SAS data set, database tables, and more to a caslib. The DATA step, the CASUTIL procedure, and CAS actions can be used to load data into CAS. After the data is in a caslib, you can use a DATA step, procedures, CAS actions, PROC DS2, or PROC FEDSQL operations on the CAS table. Tables are not automatically saved when they are loaded to a caslib. You can use PROC CASUTIL to save tables. Native CAS tables have the file extension .sashdat.

The CASUTIL procedure works with tables in SAS Cloud Analytic Services, SAS data sets in SAS libraries, and external files. The procedure has three functional areas:

data transfer

table and file information

drops tables and deletes files

What mods do you recommend for someone who's just getting their Morrowind modding feet wet?

The first thing I recommend to people is to try Morrowind with a bare minimum of mods first to experience the world and gameplay in its original form - this way you have a sense of how various mods come in and shake things up and can make an informed decision if you like it or not. I will purposely steer away from most graphics and content mods here since they are each a whole ‘nother ball of wax for another time, but if you’re ready to look at adding mods to the game, the starter pack which I recommend would include:

Essential Utilities

Wrye Mash Standalone - if you’re planning on installing a bunch of mods or want to swap out different graphical replacers, then Mash is a must. It’s the best mod manager for TES3. The Morrowind Modding Wiki has a fairly comprehensive article on using Mash and it may seem daunting, so I would say the two most important features for players are Installers (you can put mod packages into a folder to install/uninstall using Mash rather than cluttering your Data Files folder if you then decide to try removing a mod) and Repairing a Save Game.

mlox - this program should be used in tandem with Mash to organize your mods. This program uses an extensive database of mods to set a load order with the best chance of eliminating conflicts and errors.

Morrowind Code Patch - still actively being supported by our resident wizard, Hrnchamd, MCP was just updated to 2.3. The effect the patches included in the MCP have on the quality of life when playing cannot be overstated.

4GB Patch and Exe Optimizer - these two programs combined significantly reduce the number of CTDs you will experience while playing. Even if you don’t want to use mods, use these. Install MCP first, then 4GB Patch, then EXE Optimizer - the order is important.

Morrowind Graphics Extender XE - major graphical enhancement to the game without even updating any models or textures. I would recommend limiting your distant land to under 7 cells. Removing the artificial “veil” by being able to look across the entire island is great for screenshots, but removes some of the mystery which lends to this old game’s charm. I personally use the beta version from Hrnchamd which can be found here and have found it to be relatively stable.

tes3cmd (<– warning, direct download to latest version as of this post!) - To get to the download page yourself, follow the MW Modding Wiki instructions. I recommend this insanely powerful program to players for one primary reason: Multipatch. tes3cmd can create a patch from your entire load order to fix a number of common issues. The MW Modding Wiki has instructions for creating a batch file to help make the multipatch creation easier since tes3cmd is a command line program with no GUI.

Plugins

Morrowind Acoustic Overhaul - this mod overhauls the environmental, music, and effect sounds in the game. Even having the option to have a player voice. This mod is an impressive technical feat which will truly help immerse you in the world of Morrowind.

Morrowind Patch Project - like the unofficial patches you may be familiar with from later Bethesda titles, the MPP is an extensive bug squasher. Version 1.6.6 is the latest, but you will need to install 1.6.5b first.

Landscape and Object Fixes (assorted) - complementing the MPP, this series of fixes address a lot of visual errors such as floating objects, bad texture mapping, and visible seams.

Boats and Silt Striders - makes the “fast travel” services of boats and silt striders have a “scenic” option where you can actually ride the ship or giant flea. Excellent, must have mods. If you’re wanting another excellent transportation mod by abot, check out Guars.

Fatigue and Magicka Overhaul - managing fatigue and magicka burn in TES3 is fairly challenging. Not that it’s wrong, but this mod - along with other alternatives like it - make the systems function a bit more like TES4 and TES5 while still remaining balanced for TES3. Note: if you’re playing a magic character, you might be interested in Mastering Magicka which is a gameplay mod focused on magic users. You’ll just want to turn off its magicka regen feature if using it with this mod.

Go To Jail - instead of just getting warped outside of an Imperial Fort, you will actually serve your time if you commit a crime. This mod may be geared more towards thievish players, but it’s still a great addition to the game.

Graphic Herbalism - geared more towards magic characters, this mod makes it so if you pick from a plant, it will change visually as a helpful queue not to bother with it.

Morrowind Containers Animated - this mod makes containers open when you activate them like in the later Bethesda titles. A relatively simple mod, but to great effect.

There are so, so many more amazing mods out there. I myself keep a very full mod list when I am actually playing and not modding. Get in there on MMH and Nexus and find your own diamonds in the gold! How one company plumbed an ultra-fast internet route across the bottom of Lake Ontario

It’s not easy to bury a cable in the bed of Lake Ontario with 48-kilometre-per-hour winds rocking the boat, but that’s what Crosslake Fibre Inc. had to deal with earlier this year on the final leg of its journey to build an ultra-fast, underwater route for Canadian internet traffic.

The project, first announced by the Toronto-based company in spring 2017, began in earnest in early July when crews loaded 65 kilometres of double-armoured fibre-optic cables onto a vessel docked in Sweden.

Seven weeks later, after sailing through Germany’s Kiel Canal and the English Channel, across the Atlantic Ocean to Halifax, and then through the locks in Montreal down the St. Lawrence Seaway to Lake Ontario, the C.S. IT Intrepid and its 60 crew members arrived in Toronto as the first ocean-going vessel to bury a submarine fibre-optic cable in the Great Lakes.

CRTC reveals criteria for $750M broadband fund for rural internet access

Consumers are certainly aware when local telecoms dig up streets to connect their homes, but they tend to be less conscious of the backbone infrastructure that makes the global internet possible — a network of nearly 450 active submarine cables stretching over 1.2 million kilometres, according to research firm TeleGeography.

Those cables carry 99 per cent of all communications traffic, Crosslake chief executive Mike Cunningham said at a late-August event to celebrate the cable’s landing at an undisclosed location a few kilometres from the Port of Toronto near the downtown core.

“Most people don’t understand it, but subsea cables really are the plumbing of the internet,” he said.

Crosslake funded the project in part through individual investors and private-equity firm Tiger Infrastructure Partners. It will sell access to its cable — known as “dark fibre” until someone turns it on — to players that will activate them to establish fast connections including telecommunications companies, social-media giants and data centres seeking another pathway for Canada’s internet traffic as data consumption skyrockets.

Journalists and investors got a rare look at the cables — and the work it takes to lay them — on a tour of the Intrepid, owned by Montreal-based International Telecom, which specializes in surveying, installing and repairing submarine cable systems.

This particular cable is buried as deep as 142 metres below the water’s surface and connects Canada’s largest city to the shores of Wilson, N.Y., from where it continues over land to Buffalo.

Each cable contains 96 pairs of glass filament strands, with each of the 192 individual strands measuring about one human hair in diameter. The cable is insulated by polyurethane and other materials.

Most submarine cables have the diameter of a garden hose, but the Crosslake cable had additional layers of yellow tubing, giving it a two-inch diameter, because Lake Ontario is shallow compared to an ocean, and that exposes the cable to a higher risk of damage from fishing, ship anchors or other human activities.

If a cable does break, it can be pulled onto a ship for repairs, which can take two weeks for cables at depths of seven kilometres or two days for shallower projects such as Crosslake, the ship’s chief officer Geoffrey Dunlop explained on the tour.

Then there’s the ship. Built in the United Kingdom in 1989, the Intrepid was converted to do installations after International Telecom bought it in 2004. It built a new deck on the back with a cable burial plow, an A-frame and enough room for big spools of cable.

To lay cable on a seabed, it is first unspooled and sent along tire rollers that load it into a 17-tonne plow on the stern. The A-frame is lowered from the back of the ship in order to lower the plow to the bottom. At this point, the crew “walks” the ship forward to get the appropriate tension on the wires towing the plow.

As the plow digs a trench, a piece of equipment pushes the cable down so it stays put until the bottom of the sea bed — or lake bed in this case — folds in on itself and covers the cable.

It’s accurate within one metre of the intended path thanks to a dynamic positioning computer on the bridge.

For projects that require even more accuracy, the ship carries a submarine robot. The remotely operated underwater device looks like a yellow mini-tank and is attached to the vessel by an “umbilical cord” that allows it to work at depths of more than 1,000 metres.

Once the ship gets close to land, a team of divers and support vessels finish the job by pulling the cable ashore manually.

It’s easier to lay a cable on Lake Ontario’s bed than the ocean floor, but the Crosslake project came with its own set of challenges given the unique nature of operating in fresh water with equipment calibrated to work in salt water.

The different density was tricky for some equipment such as the hydro acoustic positioning beacons and the robot, Fred Hamilton, Intrepid’s captain, said at the landing event.

“We forgot to ballast (the robot) for fresh water, so when we put it in the water, it sank instead of floating like it should,” he said. “We figured it out.”

Nor had the ship been through the locks before. Careful navigation proved necessary as it didn’t have fenders that would have allowed it to bump into the concrete walls.

All told, it took a lot of work to lay down the 65-kilometre cable that will carry internet traffic in an area where there is already a connection between Canada and the U.S. in the form of three main cables on bridges and rail paths over the Niagara River.

But Crosslake and its supporters argue the submarine cable is needed for a more resilient network.

“It’s going to provide much needed physical route diversity away from the existing Niagara River bridges,” Oakville MPP Stephen Crawford said at the event. “It’s a new piece of internet infrastructure that will serve Canada for the next few decades. It’s incredible the amount of bandwidth on here.”

As it stands, about three-quarters of Canada’s telecommunications traffic crosses the Niagara River, said Crosslake director Doug Cunningham, who is Mike’s father. The new cable will give that traffic another route, and a faster one to boot.

He said “virtually all” carriers, social-media players and data-centre operators want diverse routes for their internet traffic in case something goes amiss with an existing cable. For example, last summer, much of Atlantic Canada went dark for four hours after construction and logging crews accidentally cut some cables.

Crosslake said it has signed on major customers for indefeasible rights of usage — meaning the contract cannot be cancelled, nullified or overturned — for up to 25 years, but would not reveal their names. Nor would it say how much it cost to build the cable, although Mike Cunningham previously estimated “multiple tens of millions” of dollars.

Regardless, Crosslake is not alone in building underwater infrastructure. Tech giants Google LLC, Facebook Inc. and Microsoft Corp. are investing in submarine cables of their own to optimize their network performance.

But the last round of major submarine cable investment happened during the dot-com boom, the younger Cunningham said. It’s still functional, but it has capacity limitations that Crosslake hopes to address.

“It’s not a sexy business, but you make a phone call, you text, you go on Facebook, you watch Netflix, all of that is really due to the plumbing of the internet,” he said. “And that’s exactly what we’re creating here.”

Data processing technologies are developing as rapidly as data collection is advancing, that is, at a continually accelerating rate. There’s a whole lot of technology that is breaking ground and offering new solutions in this exciting field.

Let’s take a look at what some of the latest cutting-edge technologies are for data processing systems.

DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS ARCHITECTURE

Big data sets common in data processing today have limitations on computational power. The technology needed to deal with this is called distributed systems architecture.

MPP – Massive parallel processing, and Hadoop are two key technologies that are leading the industry in distributed systems architecture. Both feature the “shared nothing” technology that ensures autonomous operation.

The key difference between the two is that MPP is proprietary and rather costly to implement, while Hadoop is open source and can be integrated from very small, low cost applications, to very very large ones. While Hadoop is more recent than MPP, and allows flexibility and scalability, MPP remains slightly quicker.

MPP systems are provided by Teradata, Netezza, Vertica, and Greenplum. Oracle and Microsoft also have their own MPP systems.

Hadoop is a software project by Apache, containing a collection of software utilities that provide huge storage and processing power. Hadoop uses MapReduce to process large non-structured data sets, as the name implies, by a map function, and a reduce function within Hadoop. Many platforms can be built on top of the Hadoop framework. Non-proprietary applications available for use on Hadoop continue to develop in number and complexity.

QUERY OPTIMIZATION

Part of leading technology for data processing in a relational database is query optimization design. Query optimization is an automated process that attempts to provide the best possible answers based on a range of possible query plans. A query plan is a set of rules that a relational database uses to search data for the required parameters. Query optimization can effectively determine which searches are valid, and which will be most accurate, efficient, and timely.

Query hints may be built into query optimization, for example, a query on a GPS database might be selected for the fastest or the quickest route. A simplified example of query optimization is to imagine a query for the number of a certain car make and model, where the database could search all makes then all models, just all models, since the model subset automatically includes make. Query optimization would choose the latter.

NON-RELATIONAL DATABASES – NO-SQL

With the explosion of Big-Data, has come two more players in data processing technology, non structured and dark data.

Traditional databases have relational structure, usually called relational data base management systems (RDBMS), and are primarily built on SQL – structured query language, which is why non-relationship databases are coined No-SQL.

A Non-relational, No-SQL database can store and access un-structured data easily using a common data format called JSON documents, and can import JSON, CSV, and TSV formats.

A JSON, Javascript Object Notation is a lightweight data-interchange format, simple yet very powerful, since stored data need not be structured. The ability to store and access this non-structured data is what makes non-relational databases such important technology for data analytics systems. As a draw back, since they are non relational, the query itself has to draw a relation, so working with a non-relational database requires more skill.

Popular No-SQL databases used in data processing are MongoDB, Arango DB, Apache Ignite, and Cassandra.

Data storage and retrieval can sometimes deteriorate data due to the format that is required by the storage or retrieval.
