wait if it's brick, it might be one of my favorite masonry factoids in action.

rocks are cold, bricks are rocks, and in winter if your house is made of rocks and those rocks are directly touching the cold outside, it will make your house cold as fuck and hard to heat. we think of brick as really well insulated NOW because we improved the mortar mix recipe so it chemically binds to the brick, which improves insulation on its own. then also started mass producing fiberglass insulation in the 1930s. before that, they were rock walls with horsehair & limestone mortar and one layer was NOT good enough. so most 19th century brick buildings have two external brick walls. you might not be able to nail through it because the wall is just a layer drywall (also a type of rock) or plaster over brick. old brick is softer than new brick, but it's still a rock lmao.

how double walls worked under the cut

if you look at the corner of a brick building, you use the end of the brick as a half and it starts the other side of your wall like this. because bricks are Perfect Rectangles, two perfect squares put together.

this is a really recent brick wall, well after we improved the mortar mix recipes to chemically bind to the brick, so they get to be Perfect all the way around. one brick after another in the perfect half to half lego stack. so pleasing.

but the brick pattern on an old building is either a lot less perfect or a lot more ornate. you'll see a half or two spaced out in a row and it interrupts the pattern, makes throughlines there shouldn't be. those are the longbricks. they support the double wall, and they're a few inches longer to make an insulating airtrap between the inner brick wall and the outer brick wall.

they'd stud and plaster the inside walls because. well there was no other option essentially. but now we have drywall & when these old buildings get converted, they just sink the drywall into the brick and leave it. drywall is compressed gypsum powder between paper.

so. my point is, if it's a brick building, you might have been attempting to hammer a nail through compressed rock powder into another rock. it's unsurprising you were unsuccessful because you need a drill for that.

k i think the walls in this place are just made of wildly different materials bc the other day i was trying to nail an extension cord against the wall and it was like so insanely difficult i was like did i suddenly lose even the meagre amount of arm strength i once possessed. should i be concerned about this. but today i nailed some stuff to a different wall and it was normalstyle so maybe the construction standards changed in between when it was built and when it was converted into housing lol
