This story was published in 1905, and this means a continent lived under such a strain for at least a decade before the war broke out.

Audio Drama Sunday - 14th April ✨

Oh my god, the audio sure did drama this week!!  

👻 @tellnotalespod (S2E7.5) HOW did none of us put this together sooner?! Oh my god, what an absolutely INCREDIBLE little twist. I love the undercurrent of hopeful resilience in Tell No Tales (Leo is going to get with the programme really soon 🤞) and I am screaming, crying and throwing up imagining the end of season reunion 😭 HOWEVER, don’t think I missed for a second that Riley is asking for another packet of painkillers . . . it would be so like him to think that 16 paracetamol is two doses of paracetamol but still! He needs to be okay!!

🌲 @hellofromthehallowoods (147) hhhhh what a GOOD episode. There’s something different about the horror of season 4 that I want someone with a literature degree to talk to me about for hours. Can we please talk about how the murder victim had a treble clef carved into them . . . i.e. the symbol at the start of a piece of music. It’S SO CLEVER I love the intricate details of this show!!!!! And, can we also talk about how emotional I feel about Clem (namer of everything) is in love with Shelby (has a cat named Cat). There’s something in that which is giving me palpitations.

♦️@grottopod (8) Grotto finale! I loved the music at the start of this episode and it was so satisfying to hear David get to express some of his frustrations. Season two sounds like it’s going to be wild.

🖥️ The Magnus Protocol (11) Oooh I liked this episode!! I love it when you’re left to fill in the blanks in a horror story - my mind is still whirring through so many awful scenarios. 

🍎 @notquitedeadpod (XXXIV-XXXV) ah! I’ve accidentally caught up to Not Quite Dead! What will my Sunday afternoons look like now?? There were so many moments in these eps which made me laugh but I’m mostly just so in awe of how complex and real these characters are. Neige genuinely feels 10000 years old and shaped by the trauma of each of them. I need to check the release schedule because I cannot wait for more!!

12. favorite character to write this year

Ron and Willy, in different ways. With Ron, there is a development from "Kill Your Father Energy Drink" where I am enjoying the character and testing out writing short prompts on him, to "Alternative Worlds", which is honestly one large thesis on Ron and Willy's relationship.

With Willy, I was spoilered (because I tend to look into a show before putting energy into listening/watching lol) that he was the villian, so I enjoyed his general presence before ep 29 blew my socks off. Still, I was interested in him without fully getting him, and I wanted to get him. The first DnDads fic I published was on Stud & Willy from ATMoD because there was a delay between listening to the first ep and hearing the second and third back-to-back, so I genuinely thought Stud would use the “I have a kid at home” reasoning to snap out of insanity and live. But he didn’t, and I really enjoyed the ending while also feeling like “huh... Stud’s dream was the focus, not his kid”. And with that, I felt like “oh, I get Willy now”, and it progressed into me having Thoughts (tm) on the Stamplers tending to dreams > kids while also enjoying canonically how Willy tries so hard to be the villain to his own detriment. Combined with that sense that all of the events could have been prevented had Stud just stayed and gotten the typical “my adoptive kid is prone to violence and thinks toxic masculinity is going to be his brand, what do?” advice.

Kid Glenn was surprisingly my favorite character to write in "Day at the Park", and that enjoyment is translating over into writing “Teen” Glenn in “Alternate World”.

tldr; So, Ron and Willy, and Glenn is starting to grow on me.

13. favorite writing song/artist/album of this year

Most of the time I am walking somewhere and thinking about whatever WIP I have going on and get ideas from that to work on during the weekend, but when I am trying to crank out a chapter, I have a song on repeat that fits the tone to focus. Albums are if I am just starting and haven’t hit the writing jag of time blending together. The Antler’s “Hospice” is a go-to for heavy mood when I need to focus (fairly depressing album about unhealthy relationship), but I had a phase of getting into Idles’ “Joy as an Act of Resistance” and “Brutalism” as background for more action/upbeat things which is British leftist punk.

Since I like talking about “Alternate Worlds” and haven’t hit the point of sharing the playlist yet, Ron’s end section on chapter two and some of three was Flora Cash’s “You’re Somebody Else” on repeat as I typed; Henry’s chapter 4 was Current Joy’s “Alabama”; Darryl’s chapter 5 was The Dead South’s “In Hell I’ll Be in Good Company” and shifted into Idles’s “The Beachland Ballroom” (some cw religious trauma in songs) because it released and it got stuck in my head. Glenn’s chapter 7 was Godspeed! You Black Emperor’s “Storm” on repeat with some other songs.

14. fic you didn't expect to write

I didn’t think “Day at the Park” would be so long?? It started as a ‘haha what if Henry wasn’t lying when he said he was a wild child’ that then turned into ‘okay, so they’ll play tag, Willy as the scary OP character who tries to interrupt in parallel to canon will happen, fic ends’ turned into ‘actually Frank takes them to ice cream and it ends there’ turned into ‘okay, so Frank calls their moms and fic ends?’ turned into ‘okay, okay. Christine collects Glenn, Willy has an adult to direct his anger at, and Henry is happy despite his father; now can I end it? Okay? Everyone’s relatively happy? Yes.’ I don’t regret writing all of the details. Part of my summer just consisted of finishing it up.

28. longest fic read this year

Around spring of this year, I was listening to The Magnus Archive as they were approaching their finale and, as you do, was reading TMA fanfic on the bus ride to and from work. We should ride this wave to shore (163,580 words) was definitely one of my favorites, and also props to the author for writing a Mechanics album-adjacent/musical play for it? And the length for a group chat fic? And no one died? Dedication. Skill. Finess.

This past year I’ve gotten really into podcasts as a way to help manage my adhd, so i’ve gone through quite a few of them and i thought about making my own rec post. obviously i have adhd and was putting it off lol but my friend expressed interest so here’s the list of podcasts that i’ve gotten through at least a full season of and loved.

The Bridge

10/10 erie atmosphere

The Magnus Archives

holy crap this is so well done. it’s horror so i can’t listen to it to help me sleep but if you want fear and true spookiness this is great. the main character is a department head for an institute that deals in the paranormal. his job is to record ppl’s statements of the weird unexplainable things that happen to them. but he’s more on the skeptic side of things which creates just enough humor to get me through a horror podcast. queerness does happen in the background. 

The Adventure Zone

i feel like if you’re looking for fiction podcasts you’ve already heard of the adventure zone. three brothers and their dad play tabletop rpg. it’s hilarious and made me cry. when they accidently do something like say kill the first lesbian couple on the show, they actually do make up for it and apologize for not realizing. their solution was to keep giving us so many lgbt characters that i didn’t even notice that the first were playing into the bury your gays trope until i went back and listen to their the the adventure zone zone eps. 

Victoriocity

 do you want quirky crime solving steampunk adventure? bc this show will give you just that. It’s full steampunk victorian london shenanigans. reminds me of patrick carmen’s writing a bit if you read his books as a kid i’d highly recommend this. 

Inn Between

okay this is a show that’ll give you a toothache. it’s all found family adorableness. it takes place in the inn that the group goes to in between dnd adventuring. it’s very heartwarming and i adore all the characters. 

The Penumbra Podcast

if i only had the choice of listening to one podcast ever again, this would probably be the one i choose. its so goddamn good and so goddamn queer. they’ve given me my dream sci-fi world and fantasy. there’s a canon poly relationship that i love soooo much.

The Amelia Project

what does one do when they want to disappear? why call the amelia project of course! each episode starts with a phone call, involves hot coco, and crazy schemes to make ppl disappear. 

Girl in Space

i can’t say too much about this without giving things away. there’s a girl alone on a spaceship with a very important job and a copy of jurassic park. then suddenly she’s not alone and it turns out that her ship is full of something very valuable and isn’t technically hers.

if you want space adventures about friendship not romance this is one for you. seriously i love it so much.

The Strange Case of Starship Iris

this one is totally completed. it’s short. in my eyes it’s a better firefly. you’ve got your morally questionable main crew (and the pilot is an alien bc they’re not cowards) who take morally questionable jobs. they end up picking up the only survivor of starship iris and well there’s some fishy things that happened that everyone wants to figure out. 

We Fix Space Junk

do you fear corporations taking over the world and charging so much for things that you’ll be in debt for life? well this is your fears come true.  it’s lighthearted tone makes things even more unsettling at times. it’s main plot is between a women who’s been working off the debt of her ship for way too long and her new, previously an heiress, apprentice. 

Be the Serpent

three red headed fantasy authors talk about books and fanfiction and make dick jokes. i love them.

Death by Dying

i dont really know how to explain this one. it’s kinda got a pushing daisies style to it. the obituary writer goes around and sorta accidentally solves murders while he’s doing his research.

Eos 10

did you want a scrubs in space? bc this is scrubs with space pirates, a reluctant recovering alcoholic, a hypochondriac disposed alien prince who is now a dishwasher planning to a kitchen revolution, a nurse who’d could kill you but has, hopefully, decided to help you.  it’s pure shenanigans. they get into so much craziness. definitely has that found family vibe bc i know what i’m about.

King Falls AM

did you also listen to nightvale in highschool but gave up on it after 20 or so episodes bc it didn’t really have a plot? then this is perfect for you. two dudes run a late night talk show in a perfectly normal town. it’s completely normal to have ghosts that move road signs, a lake monster, a vampire???, alien abductions, and calling your favorite local radio station about all these totally normal happening and how you can’t believe they’re interfering with the fishing tournament. 

i’ll be honest this was annoyingly boy heavy for me at first. the only women at first seemed to be the perfect librarian, the soccer mom,  and gwendolen the racist witch. but then there’s a plot about punching himminsts and all these women getting fed up. so i think it's totally worth it. THEY GET FLESHED OUT EVENTUALLY

a group of fictional ppl play as fictional dnd characters. Season one left me on kinda a cliff hanger and idk how to feel about it. It entertained me, so like a 6/10 maybe a 7? so far.
