Dead loop (Nesterov's loop) - aerobatics in the form of a closed loop. The first pilots did not know how to get out of it, they lost their self-control, could not cope with the withdrawal of the apparatus from a vertical roll and, as a result, died, which is why it was called dead loop. 

The Russian pilot Pyotr Nesterov first theoretically calculated that a way out of the dead loop was possible, and then performed this figure for the first time on September 9, 1913.

because there's just no reasonable way humans wouldn't have found out aliens existed in our solar system if they were completely inhabited by whole-ass civilizations
