“A gun?” Craig laughed.  As much as he said he liked things boring, he was always the adventurous member of his gang and called the others pussies if they couldn’t keep up with him.  He did it to Tweek all the time when they were together, all the ‘I don’t think we should be heres’ that went ignored as Craig lowered himself into a manmade concrete ravine so he could wander the track of a defunct water park ride.  They hadn’t been caught, either, in a far corner of the park as it was, so Tweek had whined about truly nothing.

Craig would go to the ends of the earth and face all manner of shit if it interested him.  If he couldn’t find anything in it for himself, he had no qualms with walking away, but if he could, very little could deter him from his course.

This intrepid spirit had led him down all sorts of back alleys and into strange shops, including well into the bad part of town.  He wasn’t stupid about it, though, and he walked boldly but briskly and kept his head on a swivel.  His common sense told him that it wasn’t safe here and advised caution, but his desire to live a little before he died propelled him onward.

“No, you won’t need a gun where we’re going,” he said.  It was a little mom-and-pop burger joint with five-dollar burgers that could seriously rival those you paid upwards of twenty for at quote-unquote ‘nicer’ restaurants.  He flashed a teasing smirk down at Clyde.  “It might not be a bad idea to bring a knife, though.”  It was one of those places with big iron bars on the doors, although during operating hours, the bars were more for show than anything.  They didn’t—couldn’t—actually keep anyone out.

They passed a boarded-up laundromat, only denoted as its former function by washed-out blue-and-white text, with illegible tags graffitied on its off-white brick walls.  They had about another two blocks of rundown or bygone establishments to walk before they got to Craig’s chosen lunch spot, and he stuck his hand out toward Clyde.  Mockingly, he said, “You can hold my hand if you’re scared.”

Stan startled a little when Clyde did, then smiled sheepishly.  “Sorry,” he said because he really didn’t mean to scare the guy, calloused fingers rubbing the back of his neck.  “Hell of a greeting, huh?”

It had been a minute since Stan and Clyde had actually spoken to each other, now that high school was over and they were no longer in football together.  It didn’t help that Stan lived so far away for so long.  He had seen Clyde around on his trips back into town—it was hard not to, since South Park was not huge by any means, and Clyde had a way of filling up whatever space you put him in—and maybe the two of them had even exchanged quick pleasantries.  But they hadn’t talked or hung out in a while.

Stan was glad to find somebody he could tolerate here, though, as his patience for a lot of people had dwindled substantially over the years.  Clyde was always pretty cool, like a big, friendly dog himself.  It was hard to stay miserable around him, which meant the night would no longer be total drudgery.

“I saw a little of them on my way in,” he said, looking up at a piece of artwork on the wall.  It depicted a fair young woman in a glittering lavender ball gown.  The folds of the skirt had been applied with plaster before they were painted over, so they stuck out from the canvas.  It would probably end up torn to pieces on the floor by the end of the night.

“I’ve been looking for them ever since.  They went off into the crowd, distracted by someone else, and I lost them.”  He frowned and solemnly shook his head, but he decided to keep his thoughts about how the dogs might get hurt by the rowdiness to himself.

Clyde was still pissed at him, which made sense, but Craig still bristled instinctively, despite having said before that he wanted Clyde to stay mad for as long as it took.  That didn’t mean he enjoyed being used as a punching bag, emotionally or otherwise.  A sharp pang shot through him because that was the exact train of thought that led him to do what he did to Tweek, that no matter how justified somebody was in doing something, he shouldn’t have to put up with that shit.

He didn’t want to lash out, though.  He wanted to be better to Clyde than he was to Tweek, so he crossed his arms over his chest, bunching the fabric of his sleeves up in white-knuckled fingers.  He was more hurt than angry, but Craig had a way of getting violent when he was sad, too.

He was more stoic than Clyde and didn’t show his emotions nearly as readily or intensely, but that didn’t mean he didn’t have the same depth of feeling that the other did.  He expressed them differently (worse, some might say), but he felt all the same shit as everyone else. It stung badly to have someone who used to be one of his best friends imply that he was a hollow shell of a person, that he didn’t have a heart to break just because he didn’t wear it on his sleeve.

But maybe that wasn’t what Clyde meant at all, and Craig wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt.  He at least deserved the opportunity to elaborate before Craig punched his fucking lights out.  Being a reactionary piece of shit wasn’t going to get them anywhere.  Even so, as much as he told himself he was making room for Clyde to explain before he jumped to conclusions, he couldn’t keep the biting accusation out of his tone when he asked, “What exactly do you mean by that?”
