Ellaria seems to have a close bond with her father, unlike what we see for many fathers of bastard girls elsewhere in Westeros. I’m sure he dotes on the youngest of her daughters too.

ARIANNE MARTELL APPRECIATION WEEK 2022

"Belandra," Arianne said, a few days later, "if you ever loved my lady mother, take pity on her poor daughter and tell me when my father means to come and see me. Please. Please." But Belandra had lost her tongue as well.

Is this my father's notion of torment? Not hot irons or the rack, but simple silence? That was so very like Doran Martell that  Arianne had to laugh.

He thinks he is being subtle when he is only being feeble. She resolved to enjoy the quiet, to use the time to heal and fortify herself for what must come.

It was no good dwelling endlessly on Ser Arys, she knew. Instead, she made herself think about the Sand Snakes, Tyene especially. Arianne loved all her bastard cousins, from prickly, hot-tempered Obara to little Loreza, the youngest, only six years old. Tyene had always been the one she loved the most, though; the sweet sister that she never had. The princess had never been close to her brothers; Quentyn was off at Yronwood, and Trystane was too young. No, it had always been her and Tyene, with Garin and Drey and Spotted Sylva. Nym would sometimes join them in their sport, and Sarella was forever pushing in where she didn't belong, but for the most part they had been a company of five. They splashed in the pools and fountains of the Water Gardens, and rode into battle perched on one another's naked backs. She and Tyene had learned to read together, learned to ride together, learned to dance together. When they were ten Arianne had stolen a flagon of wine, and the two of them had gotten drunk together. They shared meals and beds and jewelry. They would have shared their first man as well, but Drey got too excited and spurted all over Tyene's fingers the moment she drew him from his breeches. Her hands are dangerous. The memory made her smile.

I WOULD DIE TO GET NATIVE AMERICAN STARKS. I hardly know enough actors/actresses of Native American descent to make a full gifset, but Gil Birmingham would be terrific as Ned Stark can’t believe Twilight is to this day the biggest franchise that heavily featured Native Americans and paid massive attention to the detail, like all the actors had to check if they actually had Native American ascendence. Soon Ye-Jin as Asha > anyone else as Asha. When you requested me an Asha edit, I KNEW I had to use her one way or another

ooh okay so.

i love dorne. the asoiaf fandom has produced some absolutely stunning fan content starring dornish characters. but being a fan of the martells and dorne is so so frustrating when the source material is just so blatantly orientalist and plays with a number of sexist and racist tropes. and the fandom tries to get around that, fleshing out characters beyond what canon gives us, but at the end of the day, the source material hasn't changed. and it's hard sometimes to tell what's grrm explicitly presenting a perspective on dorne as that of an outsider's (like with arys or with awoiaf) and what's just his own biases. but i'm honestly more inclined to say it's often his own biases, seeing as we don't really see dornish characters explicitly contradict these ideas, or grapple with how they're viewed by outsiders. the stupid stony/ sandy/ whatever thing could be a made up invention of daeron's to try and categorize a people he didn't really know, or it could just be grrm's own worldbuilding. i don't know, but having such deeply flawed source material makes even trying to improve upon it feel weird sometimes, knowing that the author himself doesn't really care. when asked about the name of the previous princess of dorne, it was clear he hadn't given any thought to it, because he doesn't think it's that important. a lot of the fandom has landed on loreza as her unofficial name, but that's still just fanon. source material gives fandom a starting point, but how much stock should even be placed on it if the source material is inherently flawed? do we just go full death of the author and ignore what we don't like? do we try to work with what's given to us and give grrm the benefit of the doubt? i don't know, but sometimes it makes interacting with the text uncomfortable.

ALSO dornish aesthetics are all over the fucking place. the desert/ river geography feels very egypt, the refugee narrative feels very biblical exodus, the blended cultures is very muslim spain, the sand steeds make me think of arabian horses, the peppers make me think of central america, and then half the fancasts are with indian or iranian actors. it's fictional, obviously there's not gonna be a one to one analogy with a specific real world culture (and that would have its own issues), but sometimes it just feels very much like grrm (and to a lesser extent the fandom) went for a "generic brown people aesthetic" when developing dorne, which is very. uh. yeah. not sure how i feel about that.

Westeros. But exclusively in Dorne.

Sand snakes and dothraki. Basically all the brown people.

5 .Are there any pairings that you don’t really ship in canon, but would probably like in a modern AU? (Note- modern AU implies much smaller age gaps where necessary.)

Jaime and Brienne. (Same as yours ) and young griff and Elia sand. And Quentyn and Sansa.

6. What difference between the show and books bothers you the most, personally?

DORNE!!!!!

7. One fandom habit that is widely accepted, but according to you is totally wrong?

15 year olds were not old enough or mature even in medieval times.

8. One character you wish had gotten a bigger role or more story influence?

Quentyn martell. He had so much potential. (I think you knew the answer)

10. The most powerful (as in meaningful, or which left a lasting impression) moment in your favourite female character’s storyline, from your perspective?

Elia and how she was is remembered for her good nature and how gracefully she carried herself despite her poor health and how calm she remained in that dire situation. Also cat because of her adaptability in the hostile north.
