Chapter Eight- Epilogue
A/n: Last Chapter, but I'll probably make other spinoff Uncharted fanfics! This was so much fun to write! I might also write fanfics for the other three games and for Lost Legacy. Gonna see how college goes next semester. :)

𝓢𝓸𝓶𝓮 𝓣𝓲𝓶𝓮 𝓛𝓪𝓽𝓮𝓻
Camila felt the sand between her toes as she walked along the beach. She hummed softly as she listened to the gentle waves crashing on the sand. She stopped and turned to stare out at the ocean. She felt Rafe wrap his arms around her waist as he placed soft kisses on her neck.
She giggled and looked at him. He looked at her with a smile and gently kissed her lips. She kissed him back for a few moments before pulling away.
“Damien wants to know if he can go play with Cassie.” Rafe told her.
“Babe, Cassie is his cousin, of course he can.”
“Just wanted to ask you because he’s already there.”
Camila laughed and shook her head. “They literally live next door.”
Rafe laughed as well as he pulled away and gently grabbed her hands. “You remember when we went on our honeymoon to Fiji?”
“Oh yes, I do.”
Rafe grinned as he swung their hands, walking backwards. “Probably the best trip of my life.”
“Oh so almost getting killed by Avery’s ship wasn’t?” Cami teased.
Rafe rolled his eyes and smiled, before gently twirling his wife before pulling her into his chest.
“I’m so glad I can run our company online. Makes it so much easier to travel and do what we need to do.”
Camila looked up at her husband and wrapped her arms around his neck.
“We should go on another trip then.”
Rafe raised an eyebrow and smirked. “Oh? Where to, my love?”
“You know, Paris would be nice. Especially with the whole family, and the Drakes.”
“Paris would be amazing.”
“Aunt Cami! Uncle Rafe!” Cassie’s voice piped up from a distance.
Camila and Rafe turned towards their niece and saw her and their son sprinting towards them, with Nate and Elena trailing behind.
“Mom and Dad were treasure hunters!!” Cassie beamed.
“Oh yeah?” Cami replied with a smile.
“Uncle Nate said you were one too!” Damien grinned.
The woman chuckled and shook her head. “Your father too.”
“What?! Really??” Cassie and Damien looked at them in awe and surprise.
Nate and Elena caught up to the kids as Camila and Rafe looked at them.
“You kids are something else.” Nate laughed.
“Come on, I think it’s time for you to hear the stories.” Camila hummed as she and Rafe grabbed hands and began walking towards the boat gently rocking by the dock.
Nate and Elena exchanged a glance before looking at the kids following right behind Rafe and Camila. Camila could feel the distance ache of being shot, stabbed, punched, and getting beat up in general during her expeditions with Nate. Their dogs--Vicky, a Labrador Retriever and Gunner, a German Shepherd--hopped into the boat. Nate got behind the wheel and piloted the boat away from the dock.
“What was your favorite expedition?” Cassie asked as Rafe and Cami settled in next to each other.
“I think finding Shambala. That was the trip your father and I really bonded the most on.” Cami said.
“And got betrayed the most.” Nate chimed in with a slight laugh.
Cami laughed and nodded.
“At one point, we had a huge tank chasing after us. It was honestly just chaos, but when is it ever not chaos?”
Gunner came over and whined, placing his head into Rafe’s lap, and the male rubbed the dog’s head as he listened to his wife tell the story of her and Nate finding Shambala.
“We should go on an expedition!” Damien announced.
All of the adults collectively winced and looked at each other.
“Is that a good idea?” Elena asked.
“I don't know...” Nate remarked.
"Well, there are some treasures that still have to be found.” Camila suggested, causing her husband to look at her like she was crazy.
“Like what??” Cassie asked.
“The Ark of the Covenant. The Florentine Diamond. The Treasure of San Miguel. Thomas Beale’s Code. Leon Trabuco’s Gold. There are so many.” Camila glanced up at her brother.
“Well...” Nate trailed off, “...let’s think about it.”
“How about the Ark?” Rafe interjected. “Or Beale’s Code?”
Camila grinned and looked at Rafe. “You in?”
Rafe looked at the kids before looking at his wife. “You’re always up for an adventure, aren't you?”
“Fortune favors the bold.”
Rafe and Camila, along with Cassie and Damien, turned to look at Nate and Elena.
“What about you two?” Rafe asked. “You two in?”
Nate and Elena looked at each other, and both of their shoulders sagged a bit. Nate looked at his sister and shook his head.
“We’re in.”

More Than Meets the Eye #11- Soak the Matrix in Lemon Juice and Break Out the Hairdryers
So, small problem.
Prowl realized he was in the wrong comic run and had to split.
But not before yelling at Orion about how stupid he thinks this National Treasure bullshit he’s trying to pull is, and makes a request that Chromedome be left out of this whole mess.
Tumblr media
Why the fuck wouldn’t you tell him that?
Tumblr media
Bye, Prowl. See you later, I guess.
Chromedome and Roller have brought in some help for the heist from the local college. These students were super gung-ho about stealing the Matrix, not because they’re agents of political chaos, but because the Senator has his name attached to this little project. They feel a certain debt to the Senator, since he’s been doing his best to protect them from the Functionist Council.
Tumblr media
Gee, wonder who that truck is.
We get a little rundown of our new friends, while Chromedome has a minor temper tantrum in the background.
Tumblr media
Skids is also a member of this group, labelled as a super-learner, enough so that it may not even be a voluntary thing on his part.
In the present day, Swerve’s returned from stealing things from Trailcutter’s room, apparently totally unaware of what’s happened to his roommate. You’d think someone would have gotten in contact with him about that.
Tumblr media
I mean, maybe? You did say you liked purple.
Swerve lets it slip that this isn’t the only story time circle Rewind’s hosted in an attempt to get Rung’s brain back up to speed… which makes me wonder just how often the medical staff on board the Lost Light actually check on their patients, if Ratchet had been surprised that this event was happening today.
Swerve makes fun of Tailgate for needing to open up the wiki so he can keep track of what’s going on, then goes over to call Rung the wrong name. Swerve is very lucky Rung is essentially in a coma right now, because that’s probably the only thing keeping him from trying to strangle our resident barkeep.
Whirl helps Rung express himself by playing with his eyebrows, a trait which, now that I think about it, probably only exists for expressive purposes, considering that his eyes are covered by his glasses and we can’t see their shape.
Rewind saves Rung from being played with, perhaps solely because he’s a historical constant.
Tumblr media
So you’re saying Rung gets around. Nifty.
Rewind decides that they’ve taken enough of a break and it’s time to get back to the juicy stuff, completely blowing off Ratchet’s professional opinion about what to do with Rung.
Nothing gets in the way of story time.
Nothing.
In the past, Orion Pax is poking Skids in the face, specifically in his mini Matrix tattoo, which is giving him ideas. Skids is a little weirded out, but this isn’t about Skids, now is it? Chromedome goes to pay a visit to a coworker to get things set for the madness that’s about to unfold.
Tumblr media
My boy! My beautiful boy!
Yes, Ironfist, before shooting himself in the head and having his spirit broken by the horrors of direct combat, used to be a cop. Everyone’s a cop in IDW, at least for a little while. He’s also missing his faceplate, and isn’t nearly as cute in Milne’s style, but we can’t have it all all the time, now can we?
Chromedome’s feeding into Ironfist’s fanboy nature, pretending to be just as much as a nerd as he is to call in a favor. In exchange for getting Ironfist’s Delta Magnus body pillow back from their boss, Chromedome needs to borrow Ironfist’s one-to-one replica of the Matrix.
Tumblr media
I mean, you practically are already, but the sentiment is appreciated. We haven’t gotten to the point where we’re comfortable with thank you kisses yet, and it’ll be a while still.
While the Senator and company gush over Chromedome’s good job, Roller pulls Ratchet and Orion over to the side for a little chat.
Roller doesn’t trust the Senator. He’s done his research, weighed their options, and he really isn’t sure about this guy. Turns out that Orion isn’t the only guy who’s been modified to fit a Matrix without his consent. Honestly, I’m with Roller on this one; that’s mad creepy to be loading the bases like that.
Orion doesn’t really see it that way, though.
Tumblr media
Only one of these things was ever a secret, my guy. You worked with Whirl, he was in your precinct for crying out loud! At least he admits to his ignorance.
Back in the present, we check in on Rodimus’ investigation. Looks like we’ve got our answer on who tried to kill Red Alert.
It was Red Alert.
First Aid explains.
Tumblr media
Fascinating.
Rodimus fails to see why exactly Red Alert would choose to go this route, because A) he doesn’t know that Red Alert knows about the dirty little secret in the basement, and B) despite probably having depression, may not be the type to have suicidal ideation. It’s true, those types of people exist!
Tumblr media
Oh, this is a savior’s complex thing. Nyon really fucked you up, huh Rodimus?
After Ultra Magnus gets Rodimus to stop accosting the doctor, they’re faced with a sort of moral quandary.
Tumblr media
IDW’s More Than Meets the Eye! Come for the space adventure, stay for the rumination on whether it’s ethical to allow a mentally ill person the right to self-termination!
After consulting with Drift, because it’s always important to get a second opinion, Rodimus agrees to put Red Alert in cold storage, to remain until their quest is finished and they’re in a place that’s better for his mental health.
Anyway, back to the heist plotline.
Orion breaks down the plan for everybody: the basilica is nearly impossible to break into, but they’re going to do it anyway, because this is the past, and we as the reader already know that things go alright because Chromedome, Ratchet and Skids are still here and Optimus Prime came into being.
Tumblr media
Roller will hack the sky spies, make things look all hunky dory, while the rest of the boys magic carpet up to the top of the building.
Tumblr media
Looking mighty relaxed there, Glitch.
Glitch is probably sitting down to conserve as much energy as possible, because his job sucks some major chrome- he’s got to keep the detector beams off, using his outlier ability, but it really friggin’ hurts for him to do it. He’s going to have to do it for an extended period of time.
Glitch really got the short end of the stick in all this, didn’t he?
Tumblr media
Okay, so I was wrong, Skids uses his grappling hook a fucking shit-ton in MTMTE. Today, he’s going to use it to lower Orion down into the basilica so he can crack open a cold one and steal the Matrix.
Tumblr media
Things can never just be simple, can they?
Over on Roller’s end of the workflow, Chromedome’s irritated that he’s got to babysit the Senator. Chromedome spends a good portion of this story arc irritated at stuff, in case you couldn’t tell.
In this case, the Senator agrees that having Chromedome stay back was probably unnecessary. Or at least, he did, until he noticed that the Academy of Advanced Technology is burning to the ground on live TV.
Then the wall explodes.
Tumblr media
Things can never just be simple, can they?
Back on the front lines, Orion tags out and Ratchet tags in, because the locks on the Matrix are mad crazy hard to undo and they just don’t have time for pussyfooting around with all that. Ratchet is apparently a master lock pick. Must be those magic medic hands.
Even the Matrix being full of Fiji water is no match for our CMO, as he makes quick work of the bomb and removes it. Hooray! Now we just need to pull him back up and we’ll be all set to leave.
Or at least, we would be, if Glitch wasn’t the dumbest bitch alive.
Tumblr media
Ratchet braces for an explosion.
And braces.
And braces.
But it never comes, because Windcharger has magic arms and zero patience for facing his own mortality.
The boys haul up Ratchet and the bomb, fly on out of there, then Orion jumps off the slab they’re floating on because Roller was supposed to call and he hasn’t. I’m going to hazard a guess and say that Roller might be a bit preoccupied at the moment, and it isn’t by the television.
Tumblr media
That is a BIG BOY.
“Cleanse and control” was what Trepan’s idiotic tattoo said, so there’s a good chance that our buddy the Senator is about to go the way of Pious Maximus in a minute. Or at least, he would if Orion Pax didn’t embrace is inner monster truck and punch a hole in the big boy holding the Senator like Lennie does a rabbit.
Kroma isn’t one to let the opposite side have all the cards though, as he holds a gun to Roller’s head and suggests that the Senator be given to him, lest we be down a cop in this story that’s simply awash with them. The Senator, being the nice guy that he is, goes willingly to his doom.
Tumblr media
Be a lot easier if we knew your name, bud.
The Senator is taken away, but Kroma leaves Orion with the other big boy, and he’s not playing nicely. Orion helps himself by way of domestic terrorism.
Tumblr media
But that’s not the end of the story! Oh dear no!
After the explosion, Orion unearths Chromedome, and they make tracks for the Institute. Small issue with that though:
Tumblr media
Well, dang.
Thus ends the tale of the Matrix heist, the mysterious Senator, and Chromedome’s awkward relationship with Prowl. Our storytelling session ends with the sound of the alarm, and everyone runs off to see just what the hell’s gone wrong now. Only Skids hangs back to take Rung to the medibay, but not before trying one last thing to help his partner in vent-crawling out.
Tumblr media
Man, all they had to do was annoy him and everything would have been fine? Rewind’s going to feel so silly for all that work he put into this.
Back in the past, Orion’s digging through the remains of the Rodion police station, when a robot comes up to him, saying that they have a mutual friend who asked him to find Orion if he ever went missing.
The mutual friend was the Senator.
And the robot is Zeta, who would become Zeta Prima.
The Senator was really playing the field with all these Matrix reformattings.
Speaking of the Senator, he’s just arrived at a The Institute, where they’ve decided to not only shadowplay him, but also empurata his whole deal just to be assholes. He just wanted to be beautiful, on top of conniving, but I guess we won’t be having any of that anymore. Not that it’ll matter.
Because vanity is illogical.
Tumblr media
No wonder Whirl’s so goddamn angry all the time.

Five years ago, I had the chance of a lifetime that opened up a door to many more chances of a lifetime - interning at Disney. One of those chances was meeting my friend, Nola, a Tongan girl from New Zealand. We connected so well while in the states and I promised her one day I would go visit her in her country to experience her culture - well I keep my promises and it took your girl 5 years but I visited her! There were things I will never get to experience again, and sights I’d never get to see again. Let me tell you, it was a once in a lifetime experience - even if I get to go back.
Tumblr media
I flew from Los Angeles to New Zealand on Fiji Airways, with a layover in Fiji. Apparently this is moreso of a budget airline for people in Oceania, but I was impressed. My first flight wasn’t the best as I was in a center seat and had an old man not only with his elbow in my seat, but also his foot under the seat in front of mine where my feet should be! After that rough 11 hour journey though, I had window seats for all remaining flights and the flights were so much better! There was music and movies available on the plane (I didn’t know this okay?) and the Fijian people were so nice.Even in the Fiji airport they all greeted me with “Bula!” which is their way of greeting people, much like the Hawaiian “Aloha”. While in that airport I met quite a few people from New Zealand and they were so nice and very helpful. My second flight was to New Zealand where I went through customs for the first time in my life. I don’t know why I was so nervous but it was pretty much a breeze. Just declare anything you have and go through the process.
Tumblr media
I’ll discuss the food there since it was the first thing I noticed after leaving the airport - I felt like I hadn’t left America. McDonald’s, Wendy’s, KFC, Carl’s Jr., and soon to be Taco Bell everywhere! My struggle was finding gluten free meals - fries were a huge part of my diet! Nola’s family threw a barbecue and I was thinking since they are islanders there would be a roasted pig and lots of tropical fruit....burgers, wings, sausages, potato salad, and rolls! Their ice cream is so delicious though! I tried kiwi ice cream and it’s way better than it sounds. Their strawberry ice cream also has real strawberries.
One thing I didn’t mind there was how accessible the beach was. We went to three different beaches while I was there and each one was magical in it’s own way. The first beach we visited was Piha Beach and that was my favorite. Let me tell you, I will never see a place more magical. Our drive to the beach was long, and while everyone else was saying, “are we there yet?” I didn’t mind because the drive was gorgeous! There were so many trees and so much green and I don’t see that at home ever!
Tumblr media
Once we got there, we parked the most beautiful, green forest and had a walk ahead. I couldn’t believe my eyes at how gorgeous this place was, and I hadn’t even seen half of it yet! Once we got to walking, not only did we get to enjoy the green view, but also a stream that I assumed led to the ocean. I wanted to get a photo in the water with the green in the background so I asked Nola to take a photo. The sand was black and the water was warm! Once we got to the beach, I knew I needed to take in every moment and every little bit that my eyes could see. The green grass and trees behind me, the black sand below me, the heavenly sky above me, and the powerful ocean in front of me. I will never see something that magical ever again and I will never forget!
Tumblr media
There were many differences in New Zealand I picked up on that I wish we utilized here in the states. Without getting into politics, guns are outlawed there. I can tell you I always think about the chance of being caught up in a mass shooting in the States. While it is possible for someone to buy a gun black market there, I did not once feel worried while there. People don’t make big scenes there when they don’t get their way. And the most eye opening thing of all was how they take care of one another. We were in a drive thru and there was a man on the side begging for money. Her family began scrambling for coins and together we probably gave him about $5-8. We also went to a restaurant that had a cooler in the front with food in it. When we first walked in I assumed the food was for sale, but as we walked out I saw a sign that read “Free Food for People in Need, One Box Per Person Please”. I wish we had more of that here.
Tumblr media
And of course, the reason I went there - to meet Nola’s family and learn about her culture, both Tongan and New Zealand. There were a couple things that I didn’t particularly agree with - like how women are required to keep their legs covered above the knee, but for the most part I saw the beauty in their culture.
They are very emotional people, and I wish that is something the American culture had. What first woke me up to this was visiting the cemetery (yep, we did that). Her family had recently lost her grandmother and unexpectedly, her cousin was violently killed. Instead of staying quiet, these people express what they are feeling - a lot. They talked about it so much, it would normally make me feel uncomfortable. But I realized something. They aren’t having meltdowns, they aren’t crying behind closed doors; wow, this is what it looks like to grieve death in a healthy way. We went to the cemetery after church on Sunday to visit them. How do they visit their deceased loved ones? They keep lawn chairs at their graves, pop down on a seat, and talk to them. About life, about everything. They even introduced me to them. You may think this is strange, but I found it beautiful. They weren’t the only people doing this either. There were people all around of all cultures in New Zealand doing this.
Tumblr media
The Tongans are very formal in everything they do. They all get dressed up for church. I was lent a “kiekie”, somewhat like a woven grass skirt, to wear over my dresses for the week. For New Year’s I thought they had found a “kofu” or dress that happened to fit me, but it turned out that Nola’s aunt thought it would fit and said I could have it if it fit! We brought in 2019 in church. Church was spoken in Tongan, so I am not sure what they were saying. Once we left church, we went to Nola’s grandfather’s house where her whole family met to honor him. Everyone crammed into his small living room. At least it looked small with about 30 of us in there! Her grandfather, weak and brittle, started the discussion, getting very emotional. Then they all were speaking in Tongan taking turns to talk. Some were crying, some were laughing. I had no idea what was going on but just enjoying the fact that I got to witness this. The Nola’s sister Tina turned to me and said “would you like to say something?”. I was caught completely off guard. I can’t speak Tongan and had no clue what they were discussing. They all told me I could say anything I wanted regarding the new year. I improved some statement about how I was grateful for them allowing me to attend their family events and being able to bring in the new year learning about their culture. Then her grandfather spoke up. I could tell he was putting in all of his energy to look my way and speak, and he spoke English to me. He told me that he was glad to meet me and hopes to see me again. I fought tears. I had just met this man 10 minutes ago and I’m a no-one in this room of a family, yet he took the time to make me feel not only welcomed, but special.
Tumblr media
Not only did I get to experience the Tongan culture, but I gained a family. Not only did I meet the relatives Nola lived with, but I met her extended family as well, as they are all very close. I met cousins on both sides of her family and bonded greatly! They are all funny and had great senses of humor. I asked what the term for white girl was and they told me it was “palagni” and that became my nickname. One night we were playing a game Nola’s sister Lote knew of called Psych, which is basically like Cards Against Humanity except you all get to create and vote for the answers and the subject is one of the players. Naturally they all were roasting each other and it was hilarious. But then they began roasting me. I didn’t even realize they knew me well enough to have anything on me! I said “Wow you guys don’t hold back!” and Tina said, “Yep, welcome to the family!” and we all laughed. At that moment I really did feel accepted and that I was a part of the family. Families aren’t always cordial, sometimes they insult each other, and I got to be included in that as well.
Tumblr media
The goodbyes were also very formal. The night before I left, the entire family came into the living room for a family prayer. Her father said his prayer in Tongan and Nola explained that he said he was thankful that I was able to come and they could meet me and prayed for a safe trip back home. Everyone said something about my visit. He also said he was sorry if their home wasn’t nice but it was all they had. Let me tell you what they presented me with. They had a 3 bedroom home and Nola’s sisters were also there for summer break. That means there were 6 of them. THEY GAVE ME MY OWN ROOM. These people were so humble yet so grateful for what they had.Thank goodness I had written out a Thank You card and gotten them a basket of chocolates or I probably would have looked silly with how formal they made this. I really felt loved in this moment. They gave me a Tongan mat as a parting gift and I will treasure it forever. Tina said when people ask me about it I can say it’s from my Tongan side. It was a joke, but she somewhat mean it as well. I came to see Nola and learn about her culture, and I gained a family. Her parents wanted to take a family photo and luckily the instagrammer in the room brought her tripod! The next morning when I was leaving, her mother said her goodbyes and began crying. I met her a week ago. It was incredible how much I bonded with this family. SO MUCH LOVE.

Prompt: Pirate!Gajeel and Mermaid!Levy
AO3
Death was… not as unpleasant as Gajeel had imagined, if he was being honest. He had thought that with what he had done in his life, he would have ended up somewhere with lots of screaming and lots of pain. Basically the complete opposite of the serene silence that had now lay in. The faint splashes of water lapping against rock were the only things that punctuated the quiet and beneath him was the soft cushioning of sand.
All in all, it was nothing like how he would thought it would be, which was why he shouldn’t have been surprised when he felt a fist fall down into his sternum with enough force to send briny water expelling from his mouth and down his chin. Eyes flying open, the first thing he noticed was how bright the cave was, light bouncing off the walls with an ethereal shine that he might have mistaken for pearly gates if he hadn’t just been assault. The second thing he noticed was that he was very much alive, if the beating ache of his chest and the burning of the salt scraping away the insides of his esophagus as he spluttered and heaved the liquid out of his lungs.
The third, and possibly most important, was the shine of his dagger’s blade as it pointed at him, its hilt clutched in the hand of a blue haired woman with golden fire in her eyes.
Wanna know what I didn’t know I needed to write? Pirate!Gajeel and Mermaid!Levy lol But apparently I did cuz this thing was so much fun. Thank you for this prompt! Also, holla at that Moana inspired villain XD Merry Christmas!
*************************
The dark water was frigid as it swirled around him, freezing the blood in his veins and crushing against him in an attempt to squeeze what little air he still had in his lungs out. When the dreaded pirate captain, Gajeel Redfox, and his crew had heard about the the fabled treasure of the siren, they had been on their way to a tropical island where they could enjoy the spoils of their three years at sea. It had been a long and arduous three years too, filled with a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and an obscene amount of vomit. Gajeel wasn’t even sure how anyone on a pirate ship could even get seasick anymore.
Needless to say, they were all ready to retire with their riches when a withered man at a downtrodden pub had brought the siren’s treasure to their attention. He’d told them that it was a treasure that rivaled that of kings, a cave made of diamond filled with gold and jewels and guarded by a beautiful, blue haired siren. He’d also said that everyone that had ever gone to take the treasure had disappeared, their ships and crews lost with them.
It had all the makings of a great last score, something that his entire crew had agreed upon with sharp nods of their heads and bright eyes. If there was anything that the crew of the Iron Dragon loved, it was a seemingly unattainable treasure. So they made their way towards the fabled caves with their underwater entrance and supposed siren guard for one final score.
Gajeel had even thought that luck may be on their side when they’d arrived and found the crags unattended by anything but seabirds that squawked loudly at them when they’d seen their ship.
“After this, Fiji,” Lily had said as he’d handed him Gajeel his dagger with the garnet stone inlaid in the hilt.
“Fiji,” he’d said back in agreement, grabbing the dagger as he shot his first mate a wicked smile.
Even as he’d leapt down into the waters, blade at his hip and empty sack tied to his back, he had thought that luck was with him as he propelled himself through the waters towards the narrowed entrance carved into the side of the island. That thinking had led him headfirst into a false sense of security that had landed him where he was now, trapped amongst some perilous rocks with the frozen waters waiting for him to give up his futile fight and let it overtake him.
Black spots were popping through his vision as his chest cavity burned with the lack of oxygen as he pulled again at the sack that had become hooked on some rocks, trapping him against their sharp edges. The rest of his body had been numbed by the icy waters, the cold making his blood slow in his veins as he clawed at the fabric. Gajeel had always known that he probably would have died trying to get treasure. At one point, he’d even proclaimed it proudly before his crew and anyone that would listen in one of the many pubs they had visited on their travels. He, Black Steel Gajeel, captain of the Iron Dragon, would go down in a blaze of glory befitting any true pirate.
Only now, as the darkness ate away at the edges of his vision, he couldn’t help but fear the quickly approaching inevitability of death. They had been so close to finally making it to that beach they’d all talked about happily while laying under the stars on the ship.
As his lungs finally caved and his mouth opened against his will, trying to drag in oxygen but only inhaling the cold water, he silently wished that they had just made their way to the promised island. He should have been on golden sand with crystalline ocean stretched out ahead of him. If he could laugh, he would find the humor in the sea being his death, given it had been the only thing he’d ever truly loved in his life.
The worst part of it all, he thought as he choked on the salty waters, was that he could see the light of the entrance. He had been so close.
As everything started to fade away, inky darkness spilling itself across his vision, Gajeel thought he saw a shadow cut across the distant light. Hands weakly tugging at the sack once more, he tried one last time to free himself, nerves crying out for one last ditch effort to save his own life though he knew better. He would die here like everyone else before him, only he hadn’t died at the hands of the siren.
Somehow, that fact didn’t make it better.
The last thing he saw before his consciousness slipped away from him, was a bright streak of blue.

Siren, his mind supplied once he had stopped wheezing around painful mouthfuls of water.
She was just feet away from him, azure tail curled beneath her, its iridescent shine catching the light the same way as his dagger did. A half blouse made of what looked like thick string and seaweed clung to her shoulders and covered her chest. Circling her neck was a golden collar that was connected by a thin matching chain that stretched across the and to an iron bracket embedded in the wall on the other end of the wall. From this close, Gajeel could see the salt crusted in her hair, creating waves that framed her face. If her features weren’t contorted into a near snarl as she glared at him, he’d think she was the most beautiful woman that he’d ever seen.
Be that as it may, she was still gorgeous.
“What is your business here?” She asked, voice sharp like the crags outside of the hidden cave yet still holding a musical quality that almost had him entranced. Her burning gold eyes cut straight through his skin as she waited for his response.
“You hit me,” he croaked after appraising her, ignoring her question all together to point out the obvious. A dusting of pink brushed over her cheeks at his words, her head cocking to the side and eyebrows knitting together in confusion.
“I saved you,” she said, tone matter-of-fact as she corrected him. “You were drowning.”
“Which would have done your job for you,” he fired back, finally pushing himself up into a fully seated position and trying his best to avoid the spit up water. Gajeel’s voice still clung to its rusty edge, his throat burning from the abuse it had taken. “But instead, you saved me and took my dagger to threaten me with.”
It wasn’t even a question, so much as a statement. The siren that had killed so many, sunk ships and sent full crews to their watery graves, had saved him from drowning only to have him face death once he was awake. Paired with the golden chain that kept her tethered to the cave wall, something didn’t add up.
“Do you wish I left you to drown? Because I assure you, human, that there is still time.” Though the words were harsh, her tone was not as it erred closer to curious. The dagger point wavered slightly in his grasp as she looked him over once more.
“Gajeel,” he corrected.
“Gajeel?” She asked, one blue brow arching sharply as she repeated his name, the sound of it on her tongue sending a single thrill through him. For a moment he wondered if sirens could use a name to bewitch their victims. Too late now, he thought to himself as he nodded.
“My name. And yours?”
Silence filled the cave again as he waited for her reply, counting the gentle slaps of the waves against the walls as time stretched out around them.
“Levy,” she finally replied, the tensed line of her shoulders easing slightly though she continued to hold the bladed pointed towards him.
“Levy,” Gajeel said, testing the way her name tasted as he bit it out through his teeth, ignoring the way his heart hammered against the back of his sternum as he did. “What is your business here?”
Her eyes widened as he repeated her own question back to her.
“Excuse me?” Levy asked curtly, the skin over her knuckles whitening as her grip tightening on the hilt of his blade. Exactly as he had intended, he had caught her off guard, flipping the tides of the conversation in his favor so that he had the upper hand. She may have had him at the business end of a knife, but he was about to back her into a verbal corner.
“You aren’t the siren that the treasure belongs to. If you were, you would have let me die. Even if you didn’t, you would have your own weapon to threaten me with,” he began, voice adopting the same strengthened tone he used when speaking to his crew and captured enemies. “That, and you wouldn’t be chained to this cave if it was your own. So I ask again, what is your business here?”
By the time Gajeel was done, his voice was commanding, the brusque sound of it bouncing off the diamond walls around them and causing Levy to wince. With a loud sigh, she finally lowered the dagger instead thrusting the tip into the sand beside her so she could grab it quickly if she needed to. Throwing once last suspicious look over him, she began to speak, weaving her story for him.
As it turned out, Levy wasn’t a siren at all, but a mermaid that had been sent by her people to fight and kill the beast that actually resided in the cave.
“Toa,” she hissed venomously, grabbing a handful of the golden chain in her fist and pulling against it roughly. Toa had stolen the scepter of her clan’s queen, effectively stealing her powers and leaving her on her sickbed. Without it, she would die, and so would her people. So Levy was to kill him and bring it home. What should have been an easy victory ended with her chained and added to Toa’s prized collection.
“My most beautiful jewel,” she mimicked angrily, baring her teeth as a growl rolled through her chest. While he had hidden away the rest of his treasure from the eyes of the world, he had decided to display her, as both a trophy and a warning. Toa thought of himself as invincible and the proof of it was that he had captured the warrior princess of the mermaids and made her his crown jewel.
“So there was never a siren,” Levy finished her story as her voice deflated. The weight of what she had been through rested against her shoulders, pushing them downwards as she sat before Gajeel as her mouth turned down with defeat. “Just me. This entire time, it’s only been me.”
Gold flashed as she looked up at him, jaw setting.
“Until you showed up. No one else has ever made it as far as you.” It sounded more like an accusation than a fact. The earlier suspicion burned in her glare again as she waited for him to speak up. Whether to defend himself, or reveal himself to be in league with this Toa she hated so much, he wasn’t sure.
“Me and my crew just wanted to make one last score before retiring to a nice beach,” Gajeel said, raising his hands as if to show he didn’t mean her any harm. A small voice in the back of his reminded him that if they’d just went straight for that beach instead of the treasure, he wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place.
“I have a proposition for you,” Levy said after a thoughtful moment, her shoulders relaxing further as she spoke in a sign of trust.
“And what is that, Blue?” He didn’t miss the way her eyes widened at the nickname.
“Help me get free of my chains, and help me kill Toa,” her voice grew fierce as she leant forward, the light sparkling off the scales of her tail with the movement. Authority rang with each of her words as Gajeel caught a glimpse of the warrior that she truly was. “And I will take you to his treasure, and help you get out.”
“And if I refuse?” Gajeel wouldn’t, but he had learned from his years as a pirate that one should never die in to propositions and deals so quickly. From his own experience, it almost always ended with someone caught in a trap.
The space between them fizzled with unseen electricity as they held each others glares. Levy’s hand flew to the handle of the dagger as she pulled if free. With a quick flick of her wrist, she flipped it over in her hand so that she held the blade balanced between her thumb and forefinger and offered him the hilt.
“You won’t.”
***
It was silent again in the cave as Gajeel sat beside a large rock in the corner, watching Levy carefully as they waited for Toa to appear. The mermaid had glamoured him to blend in with the area surrounding him, transforming him into a rock to all others that might look at him. He still wasn’t entirely convinced of the magic, unable to prove that the camouflage worked when he was the one that had been hidden. Even after she had rolled her eyes and glamoured her own tail into legs that she could walk on, he still wasn’t quite convinced he would be invisible to this beast that had trapped her.
The only thing that had kept him from calling the whole thing off had been the hatred that had burned in her eyes as she laid out her plan.
First, he would pick the lock of her collar, leaving it around her neck but unlocked so that when Toa returned, he would think his prize was still securely fastened to the wall.
Second, Levy would disguise Gajeel and wait for her signal once she was certain they would be able to catch him off guard.
Third, they would kill him.
It was simplistic, and left much room for error, but it was the best they would be able to do when they both were only there by fate and not by any sort of bond. So he waited, leaning against the large rock and praying the mermaid’s magic would hold up and keep him from looking like a sitting duck.
What felt like hours had passed as they both sat together on opposite ends of the cave in silence, leaving Gajeel with nothing better to do than trace the soft lines of Levy’s face with the hardened gaze of his eyes. There was a kind beauty there when she wasn’t snarling at him. If they had met under different circumstances, he might not have even suspected her strength and station. Knowing what he had of her story, he picked out the faint scars that riddled her body, adding lines over the map of her body. Lean muscle rippled under her lily petal skin as she shifted with anticipation where she sat, careful not to disturb the collar that was balanced around her neck to look as if it was still clasped.
He could see how anyone would be foolish enough to mistake her for a siren, for something that beautiful and strong was most certainly dangerous.
Molten honey flashed as her gaze caught his momentarily from across the cave, sending a spark racing up his veins and his heart which began to beat in triple time.
“There is my precious gem.” The unexpected sound of the singsong voice bounced off the walls, ricocheting off the rock as it danced around them ahead of the body that it belonged to. Several moments passed before the speaker appeared. Contradicting the melodious tone of his voice, Toa was a hulking beast of a man with wide set shoulders and long, corded arms that ended in sharp blue crab claws. Over his back was a hardened shell that served almost like a cape, gilding running over the surface and shining in the light as he walked. His skin was a muted shade of blue, almost like the murky waters that had almost drowned him just hours before.
From where Gajeel sat, he saw Levy go rigid under Toa’s blackened gaze.
“You look lovely as ever, my dear,” he soothed as he moved closer. There was something about the cold, gleaming light of his eyes and the muted rage in Levy’s that had adrenaline running through Gajeel’s limbs. His fist tightened over his newly returned dagger as he shifted from his seated position to a crouched on, careful to not shake off the glamour that still clung to the space around him. Levy’s hair shook with the small movement of her head.
Not yet.
“I suspect you enjoy when I put you out there for everyone to see,” Toa crooned, his menacing claw reaching forward as he dragged it’s sharpened tip over her cheek and leaving behind a thin red line.
Maybe it was the way Levy shuddered under the touch, her back hit the hard diamond surface behind her as she attempted to fall back away from the touch. Maybe it was the way she glared up defiantly as Toa as she squared her jaw at the offense.
Maybe it was the bubbling anger that had erupted in his belly like lava.
Whatever it was, it blinded Gajeel with a thing veil of red as he pushed himself from beneath the glamour, the tickling of Levy’s magic falling away from him brushing goosebumps over his arms as he he ran toward the hybrid.
Toa’s head swiveled quickly as it snapped his attention to the pirate, his black eyes zeroing in on him as his lips pulled over his teeth revealing a fanged snarl. Moving quicker than Gajeel could anticipate, he threw his claw out towards the exact spot he had launched himself, the pincer closing around his throat and stopping him abruptly in his attack.
“And what is this, my darling,” he sighed as he licked his lips hungrily and squeezed gently on Gajeel’s neck. “Did you really think a silly pirate could kill me?”
The man’s voice was almost bored as he added more pressure to his grasp, the strength of it just shy of crushing his throat as it cut off Gajeel’s air supply. Rage was reflected within the depths of Toa’s black eyes. For the second time that day, he found himself fighting for air as darkness began to pop around his vision. With as much strength as he could must, Gajeel drove his blade into the man’s arm only to be met with the scraping sound of metal against the hardened surface of his skin.
“No,” Levy’s answer was matched with his tone. Gold flashed as the chain that had kept her trapped to the cave whipped around his neck, the momentum of the weighted collar causing it to wrap twice before the circlet landed at his back. Gajeel struggled against Toa’s grip as he watched her stand behind him, her tail replaced by the glamoured legs as she gripped the chain in one hand and the collar in the other and began to pull.
“But I think I can.”
With a sharp tug, the chain pulled Toa back, his head snapping upwards towards the ceiling and revealing the soft skin of his neck where the hardened surface of the rest of his skin didn’t touch. The force of it sent him reeling as his hold on Gajeel fell away, his claws instead coming up to grab at the chain that was all too fine for him to grip.
Dry coughs racked Gajeel’s throat as he tried to breathe in as much as as his lungs would allow as he was freed, free hand instinctively coming up to rub the inflamed skin of his throat.
“Gajeel!” Levy cried as Toa twisted against the chain that was choking him. With just his name and a shifting of her hold so that both the chain and collar were collected in one hand and her other reaching out, her command was clear. Snarls and rasps filled the cave as Toa fought against her hold, his movement becoming more desperate as Gajeel tossed the dagger to her outstretched hand.
“No,” Toa choked as he tried one more futile tug against the chain. Light danced off the blade as Levy brought it down into the soft expanse of his bared throat with swift precision. Crimson ran down his blue hued skin as his face twisted in open shock, his darkened eyes boring holes into Gajeel where he stood before him.
It was over quickly as his body slackened and his eyes dimmed, but that wasn’t where the pirate’s attentions lay. He had said much death in his time. Had been the hand that served the death blow more often than he cared to admit. But this had been the first time he had ever been the one to stand on the sidelines as someone else plunged the blade into the flesh that ended someone’s life.
He looked over Levy as she let Toa’s body fall to the ground, his blood soaking the white sand as she pulled the dagger from his neck and wiped it clean on the ground beside him. She was a fearsome thing, standing before him beautiful and strong as she made sure the blade was free of any blood before she looked up at him with a small smile curling the edges of her lips. Her eyes were bright, freedom and happiness softening her features as she stepped over the body and walked towards him.
Gajeel’s heart hammered itself into his ribcage as she extended the knife to him. Fingers brushing over hers with the quick zing of electricity, he took the blade and returned it to its sheath at his hip.
“You used me as a distraction,” he said, voice a shade away from accusation without any real heat behind it.
“No, you made yourself a distraction,” Levy said as she kept herself close, drawing barely closer as she spoke, her eyes filled with curiosity and an emotion he couldn’t quite place. “But thank you. For helping me.”
Heat filled the space between them as he looked down at her, committing the exact shade of gold in her eyes to memory.
“Anytime,” he said lowly, only managing to get out the one word as, for the third time that day, he found himself breathless.
“Now,” Levy spoke as her smile stretched wider. “Let’s get you to that treasure.”
***
Lily’s eyes were filled with confusion and questions when Gajeel finally burst from the water, a new sack clung over his shoulder filled with gold and jewels and a blue haired woman at his side. Yet he bit his tongue as he lowered a rope ladder to let them up, watching carefully as Gajeel helped her get onto the ladder first.
“Is that the siren?” Wendy squeaked from beside him, her short frame struggling to look over the high side of the ship.
“Metal brain would bring back a siren,” Natsu quipped as he helped keep the ladder steady.
“She doesn’t look like she wants to kill anyone,” Lucy spoke up from beside Wendy as she studied the woman climbing up the ladder with unsteady legs.
“I can hear you,” Gajeel barked up to his crew as he made his way behind Levy, careful not to shimmy the ladder too much with his movement. They fell silent as their captain and the stranger pulled themselves over the wooden banister. Without bothering to answer the questioning gazes of the four pirates standing around them, he pulled the heavy sack from his back and thrust it into Lily’s hands.
“Go make yourselves useful and go through this, would ya,” he said brusquely, the dismissal clear. Throwing a meaningful look towards Lily with a curt nod of his head as to say We’ll speak later, Gajeel turned his attentions to Levy.
“So what are you going to do with your newfound freedom?” He asked, dropping his hand onto the banister beside her and relaxing fully for the first time that day. Gajeel was back to his ship, back to his crew and he was finally going to make it to that island to relax. The only thing marring his otherwise happy attitude, was the small pit opening in his stomach as he waited for the inevitable goodbye from the blue haired mermaid.
He watched as her eyes dragged over the dark wood of his ship, pausing momentarily on his crew as they all stood around the sack, picking through it and making sounds of excitement and appreciation as they made new discoveries in its depths. After a moment of quiet, she returned her roaming look to him, her lips stretching into a wide smile and her eyes dancing with a happy light that made his pulse leap.
“I was thinking I might retire to a nice beach,” Levy said, her voice colored with mirth as she echoed his statement from the cave. “Know of any?”

Age Of Wonders Iii - Golden Realms Expansion Release
Golden Realms greatly expands Age of Wonders III’s empire building mechanics and introduces bucket loads of new content. These new features are used in random maps, new scenarios and a new story campaign, where Halfling survivors settle in a distant land filled with danger and treasures never seen before.
Age of Wonders III - Golden Realms Expansion; Availability: Instant download delivery. NOTICE: Activation key must be used on a valid Steam account. Requires internet connection. Age of Wonders III is the long anticipated sequel to the award-winning strategy series. Summary: Golden Realms greatly expands Age of Wonders III’s empire building mechanics and introduces new content. These new features are used in random maps, new scenarios and a new story campaign, where Halfling survivors settle in a distant land. The first expansion; Golden Realms, gives you the Halfling playable Race, Halfling Campaign and adds a few custom Leader cosmetics(I think) and the Magic City Upgrades and structures. Basically the biggest deal with Golden Realms is the Magic City Upgrades and Halflings.
New Content Includes:
The Halfling Race: The little folk are back, with new units, heroes and leaders. The jesters shoots fireworks which dazzle the enemy and the cleaver flinging brew brothers keep the Halfling armies fed while on the road. Halflings can be used with all classes and introduce the new Luck mechanic which allows them to dodge incoming attack while they’re in good spirits.
Golden Realms Campaign: In this three scenario campaign, you help the Halfling survivors of the Heartwood Massacre rebuild an empire in an exotic land and confront an ancient evil.
Exotic Map Locations: Capture the Naga Dwelling, home to serpentine queens and giant man-snakes, and discover new treasure sites such as the fabled Lost City to benefit your empire.
Over twenty new units: Encounter new exotic units such as the filth throwing Dread Monkeys, alluring Mermaids and the fearsome Glutton who can swallow whole regiments in one bite.
New Hero Items: The Golden Realms contain 50 new magical artifacts to discover and use. Wield the enigmatic Crystal Skull, or wear a stylish Witch Doctor’s Headdress to mix in with the locals.
Wild Magic Specialization: Unleash wild magic. Cause spontaneous mutations, warp equipment and turn orderly battles into a pandemonium where the lines of battle are violently warped.
Partisan Specialization: Use new skills for guerrilla warfare. Create concealed hide-outs and develop ambushing skills.
Two hand crafted scenarios: Playable single and multi-player these new stand-alone scenarios are built around the new features of the Golden Realms expansion.
Key Features:
Mystical City Upgrades: Arcane treasure sites located in your domain unlock new unique upgrades for your cities, making the location and specialization of your cities more important than ever. Building a city near a Crystal Tree unlocks the Enchanted Armory which reinforces your armored units.
Empire Quests: Achieve empire building goals before your rivals to unlock unique rewards for your realm. This introduces a new type of indirect competition between players. Examples are the Eternal City: be the first to build a metropolis and get an awe-inspiring Monument of Prime Good and Evil, where the first player to achieve full good or full evil alignment has a party of champions the respective alignment join at no cost.
Seals of Power: A new King of the Hill style victory condition where players must capture and hold the dangerous Seals of Power structures in order to achieve victory. Don’t sit and hold back as broken seals attract extra-dimensional beings wanting to take the Seal back.
Defensive City Upgrades: Each race has a unique city defense to build. The Draconian’s Firestorm Pillar sets ablaze those who dare attack their city. Or the Bell Tower for the Humans which rallies the citizenry to shoot volleys at oncoming enemies.

Survivor 5 Best Changes Made Since The First Season (& The 5 Worst)
Right after the turn of the century, Mark Burnett and Jeff Probst combined to give America it's 'first' reality show contest, and it still kicks on to today. While Survivor is no longer a television juggernaut like it was, it maintains a respectable audience of devoted fans who love watching people get progressively dirtier for 39 days—both physically and strategically.
The contestant's strategies have evolved through the years and the game has attempted to stay ahead of them at every turn, resulting in several changes throughout the show's lifespan. Some of these changes were to the central contest, but others are to the television presentation, while still others were to the format and advantages in play. It still resembles the contest as it was originally presented, but there's a deep history of tweaks and twists that fans have adored and abhorred in their wake.

10 10: Worst - The Outcast Tribe
Tumblr media
One of the problems with a show like this is that great 'characters' often get voted out early. The Outcast Tribe of Survivor: Pearl Islands was the show's first major attempt to rectify this.
Unknown to the remaining players, the ones they'd voted out continued separately and ultimately were able to vote some of their numbers back into the game. Due to the unspecified circumstances of the Outcasts conditions, the remaining players not knowing this was coming, and the added advantage of being immune for an additional Tribal Council, this was seen as massively unfair.
Opinion has softened over time, but essentially teleporting players who 'lost' into the middle of a game where constant tension has been applied to everyone else is questionable at best.
9 Best: Edge Of Extinction
Tumblr media
Redemption Island 4.0 seems to have finally gotten the 'save cool players from elimination' twist right. Making a Survivor's final elimination a matter of willpower rather than a carnival game of chance gave this twist the spice it needed.
Eliminated survivors were marooned on an island separate from the game with little to no aid or contact. If they couldn't hack it, they literally raised the white flag/sail and were gone. Their only action available was to await chances to re-enter the game against each other. Once in the middle of the game, and once near the end. It produced both a powerhouse player and the eventual winner, lending credibility without seeming to favor them directly.

8 Worst - The Final Four Fire
Tumblr media
Plenty of fans cried conspiracy when this alternate elimination came into play. Season 35's Ben Driebergen had gotten himself into a difficult corner. He looked destined to be voted out by the others who knew he'd win if he made it to the end. That knowledge is essentially a death sentence in Survivor and had been for dozens of seasons by that point.
Then, suddenly they couldn't vote him out when the opportunity arose. This was because he and another would be going head-to-head in a fire-making challenge instead. Whether it was brought in to keep an audience favorite from going home with a whimper or was always planned so the finale had someone who 'earned/fought' their way in, fans debate its legitimacy.
7 Best: A Million Little Idols
Tumblr media
A way for players to save themselves from a vote, but only if they intuit the right moment to do so? Hell yeah! This is the perfect blend of strategy, gut-instinct, bluffing and boasting that makes Survivor great.
Idols have been so well received by contestants and fans that it has appeared in every season since it's inception in Guatemala. They've been hidden requiring precise steps to find like a treasure, scattered around the camp, snuck into challenges, and put everywhere the show can think of to heighten the drama. They're renowned for a good reason and won't be going anywhere.

6 Worst: Except For Those Other Idols
Tumblr media
The idols that could be played after all votes were read were too overpowered and made a person nigh-invincible for the remainder of the game. The initial Idol worked more like you'd won an immunity challenge and kept people from voting for you at all. In both cases, it required too much coordination from the remaining players to overcome. Thus, holding onto those idols had players walking through the game threatening to play them at every turn.
This stunted the dynamic social game Survivor is meant to be. They've thankfully been rarities since the 'vote negating' Idol became the norm.
5 Best: Tribe Swap/3 Tribe Splits
Tumblr media
In earlier seasons, it wasn't uncommon for one tribe to dominate proceedings. This lead to them heading into the merge with 'the numbers.' The show cleverly caused some wrinkles to that safe (aka boring) situation by mixing things up. Some seasons have begun with (or temporarily split tribes into) 3 groups instead of 2. This strategically allows smaller teams to band together to overthrow dominant factions.
The Tribe Swap variant is now in every season and also improves the overall game. It ensures no one can simply ride early success without the possibility of having their allies removed from them or them from their allies. Both elements also increase the likelihood of lesser contestants finding their feet in the game and their voice for the show.
4 Worst: Unbalanced Or Pointless
Tumblr media
Survivor has been tempted at various times to experiment. Sometimes, that is in ways where the outcome proves the experiment wasn't worth it in the first place.
For instance, in Fiji, tribes were split between the 'Haves and Have-nots' where one group lived in relative luxury to the other. Surprise surprise, the tribe with the advantage dominated early.
In Nicaragua, the Medallion Of Power flumped into the game. Tribes could 'play' the medallion to gain challenge advantages. It became an almost instant afterthought and was retired relatively quickly, never to be seen again. Essentially, anything that makes one appearance and never returns in subsequent seasons falls into this category.
3 Best: High-Risk vs. High Reward Advantages
Tumblr media
It could be argued that there are too many 'shenanigans' on Survivor. These are balanced just right to be worth it. There have been several types that work in this way. Advantages that require dropping out of an Immunity Challenge to receive. Advantages where other players will know you have it, but not know it's specific details. Clues that tell you of an Idol hidden in plain sight that you will need to be bold to go after.
These types create great tension within the show without unfairly tipping the balance. Survivor often experiments with variations on this core concept, hoping to catch players unaware without completely upending their game-knowledge.
RELATED: Survivor: 10 Best Tribes Of All Time, Ranked
2 Worst: Schoolyard Pick Double Elimination
Tumblr media
Sometimes, Survivor instantly realizes when they've hatched a dud, and this was it. At the very beginning of Survivor: Palau, two contestants, one guy and one girl, were forced to pick from the currently unsorted mass of players.  From this, they'd form the two tribes, swapping genders at each pick. Ok, so far. Then, the final man and woman unpicked were unceremoniously sent home. That was it. Wanda and Johnathan were simply gone, and any investment in them was snuffed.
It was unfair, unfitting of the game, and left a bad feeling in fans and contestants alike. The only small solace to this misstep is that in future seasons when Jeff has instituted situations where some players may be left out, there is legitimate tension. Nevertheless, they've rightly never revisited this.
1 Worst/Best? (Depends On Who You Ask): 'Edgic'
Tumblr media
'Edgic' is a term hardcore Survivor fans came up with where they get into the depths of discussing how the show and contestants are presented. Portmanteau-ing 'editing' and 'logic' together, the theory is that examination of someone's weight of television time and type can 'predict' each season's likely outcomes. Whether they're shown in favorable, foolish, or an antagonistic light, you can 'know' their destiny well in advance.
Early seasons didn't skew as far in tipping their hands. Seasons like Survivor Samoa, Cagayan, and Redemption Island had a single player dominate the game and show entirely. Latter seasons have seemingly taken this fan phenomenon into account and attempted to lessen the obviousness. This has resulted in more well-rounded contestant showings and better critical reception, more like the original layout but sharper. Either way, it's an element of meta-analysis that undermines the show for some, yet totally makes it for others.

GLOW: Gorgeous Ladies of Where’s the Gay?
Netflix has been churning out originals lately, and GLOW is one of the latest shows to get swept into the never-ending stream of bingeable content. In spite of its focus on an all-women wrestling league, the show has an upsetting lack of queer ladies. Drawing heavily from the 2012 documentary, GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, Netflix’s GLOW stars Alison Brie (Ruth) and Betty Gilpin (Debbie) in a big-haired, 1980s wrestling comedy. Brie plays a “quirky” aspiring actress who we are consistently reminded could be ugly OR pretty, they just can’t decide. Gilpin’s Debbie is a former soap star whose new-mom status and impending divorce put her in danger of never gracing the television ever again. Ruth and Debbie are our protagonists with their own personal history but, much like Orange is the New Black, it’s the secondary characters that really steal the show. If you’ve already made it through all ten episodes of GLOW, and have a heart, you probably fell in love with Carmen, aka Machu Picchu (Britney Young). A young woman from a wrestling family (the LumberJacksons), Carmen is just so damn precious and clearly in it for the love of wrestling as opposed to the fame that Ruth is chasing after. You also have Cherry Bang (Sydelle Noel), whose relationship with her adorable husband Keith (Bashir Salahuddin) doesn’t get nearly enough attention, Kate Nash as the token British attraction, Britannica, and a whole slew of others who outshine the drama between Ruth and Debbie. In true Netflix form, it’s the secondary ensemble that accounts for the show’s diversity and heart. Now I’m not going to lie, GLOW initially lost me after about two episodes but, with some encouragement, I took another crack at it. Aside from its slow start, what really put me off was the ambiguous queerness of Marianna Palka’s Reggie, aka Vicky the Viking. As soon as she popped up in the first episode, I was annoyed. Reggie is presented as the potentially-queer-lady in a common way geared toward the eye of the straight viewer. How is this, you ask? As disheveled, brutish, and semi-mute. I’ve noticed a trend, over the years, in how film and television present female characters who are coded as queer but are never actually revealed as queer (or are revealed as straight, SHOCKER). It has a lot to do with middle parts and messy hair, as seen on Mean Girls’ Janis Ian, Carrie Mae in House Bunny, and even my beloved Sandy Bullock before the Mustang Sally makeover in Miss Congeniality. Aside from the more well-known characters, most of those who fall into this trope and have few lines, the camera only going to them for non-verbal reactions. Reggie falls right into this trap; she appears as a kind of “ME LIKE SPORTS” tomboy that is easy to box up. Carmen also gave me some queer lady vibes. Presented as a naïve, cute (those dimples though) character trying to make a name for herself outside her family legacy, she appears as the gentle giant that has yet to have her sexual awakening. There are a few bonding moments with her roommate, Britannica (Kate Nash), that tell us she’s not used to being around so many women, and maybe there’s some potential for self-discovery there. Aside from Reggie and Carmen, there really is no other indication of queerness in GLOW, and it’s no surprise that both those characters are presented as not traditionally attractive. I don’t expect every show or movie to have some gay, but making a show about an all-women wrestling league without a single queer character seems like a missed opportunity to me. I mean, a bunch of ladies wearing outlandish costumes and pretending to beat the crap out of each other with ZERO flirting? A travesty. Including a queer character would have been just as easy as including a wolf-identifying character. What’s more, I’m tired of shows with no queer characters using masculine stereotypes to simultaneously tease queerness and imply that queerness is abnormal. The reason characters like Reggie and Carmen stand out in the negative is because they don’t conform to how people feel women (especially straight women) should look. The lack of queerness could be contributed to the fact that this is just the first season. Netflix has a habit of throwing things at the wall to see if they stick before getting into the good stuff. While GLOW tries pretty hard to touch on some serious life topics, it rarely ever takes us under the surface. Ruth and Bettie are trying to repair their friendship after an adultery incident, but we never get a true sense of their feelings. Cherry clearly has some history with the director, Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), but we never get the full story (or even, like, part of the story). Even Sheila the She-Wolf (Gayle Rankin) seems to have some deep-seeded issues worthy of exploration, but all-in-all GLOW doesn’t give us a chance to really get to know its characters. The assumption is that they are setting us up for a season two where more of each character will be revealed. My question is, though, if Netflix is going to continue pouring money into originals even if they aren’t sure they’ll be successful, why not commit and include queer and trans characters? With the number of original shows Netflix has pumped out in the last year or two, the streaming platform has come under fire for the way that it handles diversity and sensitive topics. Judging by the cancellation of shows like Sense8 and The Get Down, Netflix doesn’t seem to have a problem with attempting inclusivity, it just has a problem with sticking by it. While GLOW fell a little flat for me, I did find it to be generally entertaining. It does lull in some places, but the writing has its clever moments. The show’s attempts at replicating the anti-political correctness of the original founder of GLOW can be schticky, and problematic, but I think many of the secondary characters are given some agency in combating this. If it does get a second season, I’d like to see more fleshed out characters, and maybe even a little bit of gay (just a little, for my sanity). To get a better understanding of the dynamic Netflix’s show is trying to replicate, I highly recommend watching the documentary mentioned above. There’s far more emphasis on comradery and the empowering nature of women’s sports, and it does a good job of contextualizing the absurdity that was the original Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling program. Plus, the woman Carmen is based on, Emily Dole aka Mountain Fiji, is a national treasure. http://dlvr.it/PTnwS9

I feel like talking about my books
Instead of working on the next page of the comic I took photos of some of my books because I wanted to show you guys. Because I honestly like books a lot, and I’ve got some interesting/weird ones I wanted to share.
And sometimes I just like to remind myself of nice things I have. (sorry for the bad photos)

This is a really really good book.
It’s all about ways and cases of how people have faked “new species” or “scientific evidence” of mythical creatures using weird taxidermy, photo-doctoring and other ways in which people have SUCCESSFULLY FOOLED a large enough group of people for a while to be noteworthy. The book was published in 1975 and is honestly written in a way that you can tell the author was having an enormous amount of fun, never dodging facts and never letting a good story ruin what is the truth, but also thoroughly enjoying the joke on people and sometimes celebrating the insane creativity behind some of these creations.
The book includes things you’d expect like the Fiji mermaid, and the unicorn skeleton which was pretty infamous, but also bizarre things like the fur-bearing trout.
I got it for $3 at a flea market.

I’m gonna avoid saying “this is a good book” or I’m gonna say that on every single one of these.
This is a book written in english by an english speaking author who lives in Japan, and although it includes a section on Anime, Chanbara and Kaiju, it also covers all the other sections of Japanese cinema that the non-Japanese audience might not even be aware of. From dramas to Pink movies to ‘Japan on Japan’ to art house. It’s probably the best book I’ve seen on Japanese cinema that offers a really broad look at the country’s film history, rather than focusing on the few exports we associate with the country.
I got this at a warehouse sale where the bookstore chain in this country use to have a bi-monthly thing where they sell their extra stock by weight, rather than cover price. Otherwise I probably wouldn’t have been able to afford the $50 price tag.

The best book on Archaeology I’ve managed to find thus far. I’ve tried finding other books that match how good this one is but I haven’t managed it yet. I’ve found inferior books on Archaeological discoveries, and books about like... the process of archaeology itself, but not a book that documents the histories and stories behind the discoveries themselves, talking about the persons who made the discoveries, the nature of each discovery, the time setting and weird events around the excavations. As well as giving facts about everyday life of people in the past and what each discovered item teaches us.
It’s in this book I learned about Mrs. Pretty and Jean Louis Buckhart. I’m just angry this book I bought on a whim turned out to be the best one and I now have an impossibly high standard for any future books on the subject.
I have this other book about lost treasures and In the Mrs. pretty story it uses a pun on 50 Shades of Grey for the chapter title. Just... fuck off.

I actually keep meaning to read this one and I still need to get around to it because I’m pretty bad at reading. I never seem to just sit down and do it unless I’m forced to.
However I’m still kinda into this book as a concept at least. The blurb says:
The Bible is full of myth and full of mystery and the Very Rev Gillbert Thurlow, the Dean of Gloucester takes the well known stories of the Old Testament and explains the purpose and symbolism behind the myths, showing where myth ends and history begins and how relevant these stories are to us today. He then goes on to examine the nature of the Mysteries of the New Testament.
And you guys know me, I’m all about symbolism and deeper meaning behind things (within reason)
The book was published in 1974. I got is for $4 at a flea market.

“Misao to Fukumaru” is a small little book with no actual writing in it. It’s a collection of photos taken of the author’s grandmother and her partially deaf cat living in rural Japan. It’s a gorgeous little book showing simple, everyday life and happiness. I have the second one too but the first one is much better. The second one is mainly made up of the B-roll and it kinda shows.

A book about the history of toys. Underneath it you can see my other book on toy history, but I decided to show this one instead. The other book documents the history behind things like Troll dolls and hula hoops, whereas this book instead is more “historical” for lack of a better word. Showing us popular toys from hundreds of years ago and earlier. Showing things like Ancient Egyptian horses on wheels to be pulled by string, doll houses from Victorian England, and french dolls from the Rococo period. It’s almost a bit heartbreaking to see the artistry in these toys, and compare to the cheap manufactured factory stuff made today. However I suppose back then only rich kids could get toys, instead of being widely available for everyone the way it is today.
Oh well.

I highly recommend this book if you can get your hands on it!
Honestly, I’ve found it hard to find any books on exploitation movies. Yes, there’s the Internet and shows like ‘The Cinema Snob’ which fills in a lot of the gaps, but no real BOOKS on the film subgenre. This is the best one I’ve managed to find that focuses on the topic itself, rather than talk about exploitation films as a single chapter in a book on film as a whole. Which is a shame, because Exploitation ‘trash’ (and yes. a LOT of it is complete trash) helped build movies into what they are today, for better or worse. They played a very vital role in shaping cinema, and not only that, but to ignore parts of history in favour of other parts paints an inaccurate picture of a time period.
It’s why you have people who believe ‘Saw invented Torture Porn’ when movies like ‘Blood-Sucking Freaks’ have existed since the 60s.
I once attended a screening by Jerry Beck on his ‘Worst Cartoons Ever’ show, where he states that he believed preserving terrible awful shit cartoons to be very important, and how nobody was doing it. Because “If we only remember the good and forget about the bad, of course we’re gonna say ‘Everything was so much better 20 years ago!’ If we ignore the crap how can we really see how much we’ve improved?”
Exploitation films are why the modern horror genre even exists tbh. Hollywood saw how much money ‘Last House on the Left’, ‘Halloween’, ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and ‘Friday the 13th’ were making and went “Hey! There’s money here!” and made ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’. The first mainstream blood-soaked horror movie widely distributed.
Which, sadly, mostly killed the exploitation circuit. Because when all you have to fall back on is blood and nudity, how can you compete when Hollywood, which actually has money, starts muscling in on your territory.
Hilariously the opposite is now starting to be true. Hollywood is so focused on churning out stupid gore-soaked horror movies that people are starting to pay more attention to the low-budget indie films that tend to have more thought put into them.
No photos of the inside on this one because it’s an indie released book (as it should be) and printing costs limited how many pictures could be included, so it’s mostly text.
I bought this from the Author while visiting friends in L.A.

2017
Here comes my typical self reflection post at the end of the year. It’s not for everybody, but it is certainly for me. I’m pretty old fashioned for a person who hates tradition.
What are my highlights this year?
I have to start with what i have intended for myself for this year. In 2016, my goals, many were not achieved and I felt like poop. So, this year, I set 3 big goals for myself. 2 of it were planned like way before from my 5 years plan thing that I had previously. Okay so they’re not really goals they’re plans.
1. Get married to the love of my life
2. Epic honeymoon
3. New job
So, plan one and two, alhamdulillah, all thanks be to Allah, with his grace and mercy I managed to plan my wedding, something I have never imagined myself ever doing in my teen years. I wouldn’t say it’s excessively challenging or anything. Alhamdulillah all went well. It’d be a lie too if I were to say there were no setbacks.
Secondly, epic honeymoon!!! Alhamdulillah again praises be to Allah, we managed to go for a honeymoon to a location we both didn’t expect. Okay, not that we didn’t expect, we had a really hard time deciding where to go. We initially listed down New Zealand, London, Italy, Fiji, Australia, Turkey from what I recalled, I’m sure we threw in a few other countries amidst the discussion but, yeah. Crazy, we were so fickle. We talked to a few friends who traveled a lot and somehow agreed to go to Morocco. The more I researched on that beautiful country the more excited I get. My anxiety made me over prepared as usual, but Alhamdulillah we met nice people. We arrived scared and unsure, only to leave the country with full hearts and longing to visit again should we have more rezki in the future InshaaAllah.
I know that I might have shared too much on social media, but that’s two of my epic goals that actually came true for me. So I’m extra excited about it, thus this whole over sharing on Facebook. I had to apologize if anybody classified that as bragging because it is truly not my intention. I also just hope to share my photos and experience to my aunts who doesn’t have the luxury to travel, I hope my photos and video allow them to see the beautiful countries as how I see it.
My last goal, however... but I’m certain, Allah has His reasons behind it that I may not comprehend or able to see now. This goal has been recycled from I don’t know which year anymore. If you have been close friends with me, I might have shared once or too many times about my intention to change job. I lost track of how many interviews I went, how many I failed, funny reasons, funny expectations. Some really broke my heart some just gave empty promises, I know, so much drama. Why am I describing this like a hopeless relationship?! 😂 But truly, I’m lacking in this department. Actually to think of it, I got my current job via a friend too. So maybe, my luck is really shitty in this department, or I need help badly or it’s just me. 🤷🏻‍♀️
I’m not a people person, although I tried. I try everyday, to mix with all kinds of people, try not to be judgemental and even so, there’s still a lot for me to learn. Some people say, keep your goals a secret so you won’t jinx it—maybe that’s it.
I don’t recall if I actually listed my goals anywhere publicly last year, but yeah. One thing I learn, the hard way I should add, don’t tell people your goals, just do it.
Now, after looking back, am I happy where I am?
Alhamdulillah yes, definitely. I am so grateful and thankful. There were a lot of bittersweet memories, people you meet, people you’ve bonded with and get closer to than before. Treasure the people who’s always there, understand those who weren’t. Remember everyone’s path is different and, don’t forget to move on, always.
I shall end this unapologetically long winded post (heh) with good wishes and good vibes. 😇
May 2018 be all you hoped for, if it didn’t start well may it end well for you, InshaaAllah. May we all have undying strength to strive for what we planned for the whole of 2018 InshaaAllah. Stay positive, never lose hope, have faith in Allah and give your best!
Kisses,
Ꭺ.Ꭰ
