Lotus Temple Tour, New Delhi
In the month of December, the Indian city of New Delhi saw the opening of The Lotus Temple, a Baha'i house of worship. It has become one of the city's most well-liked tourist attractions as a result of its likeness to a lotus flower. Like all other Baha'i Houses of Worship, the Lotus Temple accepts visitors of any religion or none at all and has no further entry requirements. Some of the emperors established these temples for various purposes, while the majority did so to glorify themselves or their respective faiths. The Lotus temple, on the other hand, fulfills a completely different purpose. It is designed in the shape of a flower, which the majority of Indians see as a sacred symbol owing to its look. It serves as a symbol for everything Baha'i believers put their faith in. The Lotus Temple, one of the seven holy structures connected to the Baha'i faith, is located in New Delhi. Similar to other Baha'i temples, it has a circular, nine-sided design. The building is composed of 27 freestanding marble petals that are arranged to form the temple's nine sides. All Bahai Houses of Worship share the absence of altars and pulpits within, as is the case with the Lotus Temple. No sculptures, pictures, or other visuals of any type are present within. One of the most stunning features of the structure is the nine pools of water that surround the temple's petals.

Me, staring at the "Nezha is eternally 12/Nezha is often depicted as a kid so he's just a kid and nothing else" crowd: man, have you heard of Child Manjushri a.k.a. Wenshu Tongzi
(This is totally not an excuse for me to find cool statue pictures and talk iconography)
So, here is Bodhisattva Manjushri in his standard "graceful aristocratic prince" form, riding his azure lion. The statue in the picture doesn't have it, but oftentimes, he'll also be holding a flaming sword that symbolizes wisdom's ability to cut through ignorance and delusions.
Tumblr media
This is "Holy Old Monk Manjushri", a variant that I came across a few times while temple-touring, but couldn't find many good online pictures of. It seemed like a thing that was popular around Mt. Wutai, based on the "Buddha-palita met Old Man Manjushri" tale. Sometimes his BFF Samantabhadra is depicted as an old man too, for matching purposes.
Tumblr media
And this is Child Manjushri, with his five hair buns, often worshipped in an esoteric context. On Mt. Wutai, there are five major temples atop five peaks, each worshipping a different form of Manjushri, and the "middle peak" temple has a Child Manjushri in their main hall. Like, it's far from the most common variant, but neither is it this super obscure form that no longer enjoys active worship.
Tumblr media
Lastly, just for fun: this is Yamantaka, a guardian deity/Wisdom King, who, in Tibetan Buddhism, is believed to be Manjushri's wrathful form.
Tumblr media
If you wouldn't call Manjushri "the eternal child Bodhisattva" just because he has a child form, why would you say Nezha is an eternal child when he, too, has both child and adult forms?
Tumblr media
Even though Nezha's child form is vastly more popular and well-known than Child Manjushri, I think my point still stands: A deity is capable of having multiple manifestations, of varying ages and appearances, each fulfilling a particular function and niche——none of which is the "One True Form TM", just different clothes they wear based on occasions and audiences.
To stretch the analogy a little, Manjushri's child form is the formal dress he puts on before attending a religious event, while Nezha's child form is the lotus T-shirt he wears a lot while appearing on TV, to the point it becomes his most iconic attire.
This doesn't mean he only has a single shirt, for goodness sake, and using his child form as evidence for the "eternal child" claim is like saying Nezha's only allowed to wear that one shirt and nothing else.

Princess and His Knight: Aymeric de Borel x Reader Edition
A/N: I recently got into this silly little game and noticed a lack of fresh Aymeric content so I edited a personal fic of mine into an x-reader for all to enjoy and insert themselves or their ocs into \o/ this is my first time writing for this sweet man so I am so sorry if he is a little ooc! Just a heads up, this contains spoilers for basically all of Heavensward. (I just started Stormblood though so no spoilers pretty pretty please)
Summary: Aymeric de Borel happens to come across you in Gridania during a business trip but while he waits for you to finish up your own business, two small children make him reflect on his dynamic with you. Perhaps this time he isn't the knight in shining armor...
Rating: E
Pairing: Botanist reader/Aymeric
It was a fortunate chance that Ser Aymeric ran into his dear Warrior of Light in Gridania. Initially this trip was to meet with the Elder Seedseer and personally deliver a few documents as a displayed initiative of Ishgard keeping contact with the rest of Eorzea. Or at least that is the polite way of documenting he wanted to take advantage of the rare occasion he’s able to escape his desk and to also take advantage of the even rarer occasion he’s able to take a small break from the everlasting winter at home in exchange for a brief change of scenery.
Judging by the subtle smile on Lucia’s face it was safe to say she appreciated the brief trip as well.
After the exchange of pleasantries followed by work discussions, and finally after some light personal chit-chat the conversation with Elder Seedseer reached an appropriate conclusion.
Before parting ways, Kan-E-Senna mentioned with a curl of her lip that the Warrior of Light was spotted near the Botanist guild if he had a moment to spare or hell- if they were even still there. With the fate of Eorzea on their shoulders so often, the Warrior of Light was not one to stay in a single spot for too long.
“It would not hurt to stop by and bid greetings to our dear friend before we head home.” Aymeric eagerly suggests to Lucia as if he even had to explain himself.
“It certainly would not, Lord Commander.” Her smile curls, matching Kan-E-Senna’s knowing one.
With the convenience of mini Aetherytes around, the two were at the Botanist guild within a minute. The area only feels somewhat familiar after being given a tour some time ago. As commander of the Temple Knights and head speaker of the House of Lords, he’s rarely in Gridania. Let alone in areas outside of the Lotus Sand and the airship landing dock.
Familiar with the area or not, there is no deceiving his eyes when he spots a figure he’d recognize anywhere. With his objective in sight, his pace unconsciously quickens. For speed efficiency reasons of course.
There you were, several yalms away. You look quite different aside from your contemplative stare aiming down. Rarely has he seen you outside of a heavy winter coat. He’d say your current attire matches well with the other botanists in the area.
It’s not until he and Lucia are much closer do they notice you’re looking down at three small children, two of them holding planter pots.
For a moment, you crouch down, taking the small pot carefully in your hands as you inspect the dirt. Quietly, Aymeric admired the way your brows pinch together in thought as your eyes observe the object in hand. What you said was inaudible to him but it made the small Elezen child grin with glee.
Aymeric also smiles, feeling his heart flutter at the sight of someone so dear to him work so nicely with the children. He had half the mind to turn on his heels so as to not disturb the moment but he becomes sealed in place the moment your head finally turns towards the two.
Your eyes widen briefly but the wide smile that blooms quickly after the initial surprise could bring spring to Ishgard.
“I hope we are not interrupting.” He returns the smile.
“Oh no! Not at all!” You fervently shake your head and stand upright. “It’s good to see you’re both outside of the winter wonderland.” You chuckle. “Is it business or pleasure that brings you out here?”
“It is indeed a pleasure to have a change of scenery but alas, it is business that brings me here today.” Aymeric gives you a slight nod. “Is it business that also occupies you today? I would not want to pose as a distraction from your current company.” His hand motions to the three small children beside you.
You glance down at them for a moment before shaking you head. “Nah, just helping the little ones get some proper soil for their plants. Got this one trying to grow some mint.” You slightly lift the pot toward him. “I been overdue to come by and check on the guild, well- moreso Fufucha.” An airy laugh follows.
“Fufucha?” A dark brow quirks up. The name faintly rings a bell.
“Fufucha!” You nod. “She’s the head of this guild- oh- I haven’t introduced you yet.” You gasp before turning to one of the small figures. “Hey, Fufucha! If you get a second I’d like you to meet someone.”
With a perk of a small head adorning a sunhat, Aymeric stands corrected upon the realization that the small figures beside his champion were actually two small children and a single lalafell.
“These some friends of yours?” A soft southern voice inquires as she takes a step or two closer. As Aymeric more carefully inspect the lalafell he notices she and you wore matching hats. Yet another charming detail of his dear friend that will be added to the collection.
“Sure are! Some of my closest yet.” You nod proudly. “This is Aymeric and Lucia. Or Ser Aymeric if you wanna get fancy with it. I told you how Ishgardians have their fancy rankings but these are good people who helped me out and saved my ass lots of times.” You laugh, motioning your hand to the respected figures, ignoring said guild master muttering “language!” In a warning tone.
The commander almost laughs from the casualness of the introduction but he’s long perfected the act of maintaining his cool composure. To know and be able to refer to those in high authority with such casualness was truly the privilege of the Warrior of Light. However, he is confident you would say it all the same regardless of your own title.
“Miss. Fufucha was it? It is an honor and a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for providing your botanic knowledge to the people of Eorzea.” Aymeric gives a polite smile as he bows along with Lucia.
“I have heard through the grapevine that you and the Warrior of Light provided assistance to the farmers on Camp Cloudtop. For such deeds, I thank you once more.” There’s a prideful glimmer in his sapphire eyes, amused by his little play on words.
“As they have said, I am Ser Aymeric de Borel, commander of the Temple Knights. Tis the fancy way to put it as they have also said.” His eyes flicker to you for your reaction.
“I thank you for your service in keeping Ishgard, and my sprout here safe. I can’t take full credit of the work in Camp Cloudtop as that was mostly their doing. I just offered some sage advice.” The Lalafell nods.
“I heard plenty about you both though. Especially you, Ser Aymeric.” She smiles. “It’s nice to finally have a face to match all they said.” She innocently rests hands behind her back.
“Oh? Good things I hope.” It’s lighthearted but deep down he truly hopes you songs of praise match his of yours.
“Of course! When they came back gushing about-”
“OH-KAY! That’s enough! Boss, the kids need the good soil for these.” You quickly hold the small planter out to your guildmaster as an offering.
“You know where the good soil is.” Fufucha is unmoved with the exception of her arms coming forward to cross over her chest.
“Don’t pay any mind to that.” You say to the two guests while glaring at Fufucha for a moment before sighing in defeat. “I’ll be right back but after that I’d like to get some lunch with you before you take off.” You pause, giving the raven haired knight a hopeful look. “That’s if you both aren’t in a hurry to get back.”
“Not at all. That sounds lovely.” The acceptance leaves his lips unconsciously but he wouldn’t dream of redacting it after seeing your face light up. “As someone more local to the area, I trust you have an assortment of good recommendations.” He adds. He was already out, surely another bell or two wouldn’t hurt. This opportunity was rare enough as it is but to also have you here and not in the midst of saving the world again? He’d dare to say this was a blessing from Halone.
“Right!” You grin. “I’ll be just a sec. Just don’t…” Your gaze flickers from Fufucha then to the two children gazing up at Aymeric and Lucia in awe. “Hey kids, you know those are knights. They fought lots of nasty monsters and stuff. You should ask them about it.” You initiate the shift in conversation before reaching for the other planter and heading inside the guild.
Lucia smiles to herself as the two children gasp in awe and step closer. One was a blonde boy and the other a girl who looked a lot like his sister.
“Are you sure you’re a knight?” The girl softly asks Aymeric while shyly twirling a blonde braid around her finger. “You look more like a prince.”
“I am deeply flattered by such an endearing compliment but I am in fact a sworn knight.” Aymeric chuckles, kneeling before the two. “May I be graced with the name of the fair maiden before me and her comrade?”
“I’m Ophelia!” The girl slightly lifts part of her dress and bows in a polite curtsy. “And this is my brother Oliver.” Her hand motions to the boy who curiously is peeking at the long sapphire blue sword on the commander's side.
“It is a pleasure to meet you bo-”
“Have you killed people with that?” The boy asks abruptly, causing even the knight himself to pause for a second. The boy's hazel eyes have a strange amount of sparkles for such a morbid question.
“Oh definitely! Like daddy said, knights kill all types of things like dragons and bad guys and poor people.” Ophelia nods in agreement.
“Okay! That’s it with the blood and violence talk.” Fufucha interjects, waving her hands.”I’m gonna have a word with your father about what he’s feeding to you.” She sighs, shaking her head. “I’m so sorry about that.” She looks apologetically at Aymeric.
“It’s alright.” He assures her. “While weapons are created to harm, this sword is strictly for the use of protecting the people against armed villains. People such as yourselves included.” He softly smiles at the two children. “A long time ago my people did fight dragons but that war has reached its end and now the dragons live in harmony with us.”
Ophelia nods a little before perking up once more with hopefully a less morbid response. “Okay so you did fight a dragon but have you rescued a princess from a tower?” She eyes him with mild suspicion. “The stories all say that knights have fought dragons and rescued their true love from the highest point in the tower!” She said matter-of-factly. “The knights also break the spell of their true love with a kiss but if you haven’t kissed someone yet it’s okay. I’ll still count it.” She nods rather sympathetically with a hand over her heart.
A laugh escapes Lucia. She holds a hand over her mouth in an attempt to muffle herself.
Aymeric side eyes his second in command for a split second before clearing his throat. “I see… Thank you for your generous grading. However, I have not had the opportunity to rescue a princess just yet. Ishgard does not have royalty but rather a republic.” He tries to explain.
“What about the Warrior of Light? I heard they slayed a dragon and a big one too!” Oliver stretched his arms out to emphasize the size. “But they whine about how tired they are of running through a lot of castles but I think they’re just being lazy.” He whispers, glancing at the door to make sure you weren't going to hear that.
“In their defense, being a hero is quite exerting so I can certainly sympathize with their exhaustion but to answer your question, yes. They have saved me and my country by bravely slaying a very sizable dragon.” Aymeric chuckles.
“Are we talking about dragons?” The door swings open once more as you approach the party and crouch down next to Aymeric.
“Our friends here are quite curious about your good deeds in Ishgard. They are in search of a knight who’s experience includes; slaying a dragon, saving a princess from a tower, and breaking her afflicted curse with a kiss from her true love.”
“Ah, it wouldn’t be the first time I had someone request a dazzling knight in shining armor.” You chuckle, handing the two their respective pot. “But you’re right! I fought plenty of dragons. All of them bigger than your house with mighty large horns and massive fangs! But after taking down the biggest, baddest of them all, we’re square now. I have plenty of dragons I would consider good friends!” You proudly point your thumb towards yourself.
“I ain’t quite saved a princess from a tower but I saved my friend Aymeric here from the tallest of them all!” You nod towards him.
Upon a second of reflection, Aymeric supposed that the Vault could technically be considered a tower.
“Was he under an evil witches curse you broke with a kiss?” Ophelia tilts her head innocently.
“O-oh no!” You laugh nervously and shake your head. Thinking more on it, you supposed his father could be considered an evil witch having conspired with the Ascians and and the other well… points that aren’t exactly the time or place to dwell on, let alone tell children.
“Good enough! I have my answer!” Ophelia states. You and Aymeric exchange looks, both curious what it would be.
“The Warrior of Light slayed a dragon and rescued Aymeric from a tower so I declare they are the knight and Aymeric is the princess!” She beams proudly from her conclusion.
Now you, Lucia and Fufucha were having the laugh.
Aymeric wishes he had a retort at the tip of his tongue but all's lost when he sees how the corners of your eyes crinkle as your smile widens. Times like this, outside the midst of battle you look so soft. The yearning is there to embrace you. To be enveloped in your arms and selfishly absorb the warmth you radiate. Like a comforting blanket that protects all in your reach.
It is the same security he hopes he brings. As Commander of the Temple Knights he’s saved more lives than one could count, slayed many beasts and served his country like a noble knight should without asking for anything in return but the Warrior of Light… Within your short time to Ishgard you became this countrys champion, his champion. You are like the sun whose rays could not be smothered by even the thickest of clouds.
Countless times you volunteered to put you life on the line to protect his own men, reach out to someone once deemed a terrorist and turned the tides for the sake of peace, ventured to the clouds farther than his own men had ever traveled, slayed the very dragon who put their newly born alliance between man and dragon in danger. An alliance that might not have even been forged had it not been for the trust you built with them.
You even saved his best friend. A man he feared would have to have been striked down out of his duty for Ishgard but where he lacked, you made up for it. Hell, he didn’t believe he would have stood a chance against Raubahn in the Eorzean tournament and but amongst the cage of flames you stood proudly as the victor while adorning Ishgardian colors.
Such a proud display of his peoples armor, snowflakes dusting your hair and, the fire in your eyes is a memory that plagues his thoughts an amount too embarrassing to admit.
With a soft inhale, he sighs. There’s a smile as he realized he has no choice but to accept this title. For it truly was the one beside him who rescued him from his fathers captive at the tallest point in the tower and ventured out far and wide to slay him. A task he still feels ashamed having not done himself but what’s done is done.
“Since I’m a knight, can I have my own set of dragoon armor?” You peer at him.
“What became of the Ishgardian armor given to you for the tournament?” A brow quirks up.
“I still have that but I think the armor Estinien had was way cooler. I think it would be neat to have my own one day.” You smile smugly as you cup your chin between your index finger and thumb.
“While I do agree the Azure Dragoon armor has a well thought out design that suits the fighter and looks pleasing on the eyes, such a design is unfortunately reserved only for those appointed as the next Azure Dragoon.”
“Aw man.” You sigh defeatedly and slouch your shoulders. “Well, if you’re not going to let me have that or your armor you’ll at least buy lunch, right?” With a soft groan you rise back up to your full height. A hand extends to him as an offer.
“Now that I can certainly do for my knight.” He lifted his head up and reached for your hand. Gently he squeezed it as he rose to his feet, giving it a shake as a quiet promise of their deal.
“Deal!” You smile and give him a nod before looking down at the smaller three. You take off your gloves, tucking them in your pocket before reaching out to ruffle the two heads, much to their dismay. “Alright, I’m going to head out but you guys take care now. I’ll stop by again soon, Fufucha.”
“I hope you do.” The botanist smiles up at you before turning to Aymeric and Lucia. “Thank you for coming by today. You’re welcome to come by anytime and we’re always happy to help folks discover their green thumb!” She smiles, holding a thumbs up at the two.
“Thank you for the invitation. It was a pleasure to meet you as well, Miss. Fufucha. Perhaps one day I may take you up on your offer.” Aymeric does a slight bow and returns the gentle smile.
“Good luck to the both of you as well.” He looks to the two small children who wave and bid their farewells.
With a turn of the heel, Aymeric, Lucia and you were off to Old Gridania.
“My dear Warrior of Light.” Aymeric spoke up after a quiet moment. “Pray, er- next time you and your comrades catch up do give them my greetings but perhaps they needn’t know of our newly established titles.” He softly suggests.
You smirk, nodding your head a little. Your hands link behind your back as you lean closer to him. “Anything for you, your highness.” You softly say then add after a beat has passed. “However, you know those kids aren’t the only ones who call me your knight in shining armor.” You muse.

Kuro: Phew, we’re finally here. Are ya tired, little miss?
Souma: You’re sorry that I have to carry your luggage…? Fufu, worry not. To be of service to you, Anzu-dono, brings me great joy.
Keito: Sorry about that, I live in a temple on top of a mountain. I mean, climbing this long stone staircase is perfect for training your body, but...
Kuro: All three of us are pretty proud of our physical fitness, but it must’ve been hard for ya, right? We’ve been coming to visit now and then, so we’ve gotten pretty used to the trek.
Souma: Umu. That was back during the ‘Harouin Paati’, when we came to visit Hasumi-dono to consult him…
Keito: I was a little surprised that you two showed up all of a sudden back then.
Keito: Now that we’ve successfully finished working on the Halloween Party stage, I can look back and say that it was a good experience, struggles and all.
Kuro: I guess. Check it out, with the trees on the mountain turnin’ into all these bright colors, ya can really feel the seasons changin’.
Souma: The scenery is quite picturesque as well. The atmosphere is serene and comforting…♪
Keito: The temple is a fair distance from ES, so it’s the ideal spot to pass the time leisurely after performances.
Kuro: Come to think of it, little miss Anzu approached us just as we were makin’ plans to hang out.
Kuro: Now that the Halloween Party is done and dusted with, we were thinkin’ about spendin’ some time relaxin’ as a Unit before the SS began in earnest.
Souma: We had thought that we could relax and enjoy ourselves at his parent’s temple, and if perchance we wished to have a ‘ressun’, it would provide an ideal location. Hasumi-dono proposed the idea to us.
Keito: Then Anzu approached us…. The rest is history.
Keito: You said that you wanted to discuss my ‘Special Outfit’ whenever I felt comfortable, so I took the opportunity to invite you over as well.
Keito: Though truthfully, I asked you to accompany us in part, for our own convenience. Are you sure that this isn’t a bother?
Keito: … I see. It’s a relief that this doesn’t disrupt your schedule.
Keito: Well, we can’t make any progress by just standing around and talking about it. I’ll lead you to the temple nave. Anzu, both of you, follow me.
Tumblr media
Keito: … Anzu, what’s the matter? Why are you looking around like that?
Keito: Ah, you’re asking about your luggage? You can leave it where you please, I don’t mind. This room is large enough that you can make use of the space in any way you’d like.
Keito: It isn’t like I can offer exceptional hospitality, but I would like you to relax and take it easy for once, since you're always busy and working
Keito: Of course, the I feel the same towards Kiryu and Kanzaki. I’ll bring you all some tea. Would you prefer it iced, or hot?
Kuro: ‘ppreciate the sentiment, but I don’t really feel like sittin’ down. My body’s gotten perfectly warmed up from climbin’ that stone stairway.
Souma: Umu, I feel the same. If Anzu-dono and Hasumi-dono do not mind, I’ll leave my suitcase here and go on a light stroll.
Souma: I thought I would enjoy a bit of ‘uokingu’ and admire the splendid autumn foliage.
Kuro: Oh, sounds sweet. Then I’ll join ya, Kanzaki. Let’s go visit the storeroom for a bit.
Keito: … Hm, I understand. You want to practice in the storeroom like usual? Then I’ll give you the key.
Kuro: Haha. It ain’t that far, so we’ll just turn around and head straight back as soon as we reach the storeroom. Right, Kanzaki?
Souma: Umu ♪ I shall bask in nature together with Kiryu-dono.
Kuro: Danna, little miss, see ya.
Keito: … You’re asking why I didn’t go for a stroll as well? I don’t particularly care to observe the scenery in the yard or the mountains behind the house, since I’ve admired it time and again since I was little.
Keito: Ah, no, if you’d like to have a look, then I’ll give you a tour at the very least.
Keito: There’s something you want me to see, not something you want to see?— Hm. So you’ve already put down some costume plans in this sketchbook.
Keito: … All these drawings with sticky notes between the pages, are these ideas for my costume?
Keito: I assumed you’d just have me choose from several options, but I’m surprised to see that you thought of a detailed design, including various alternative patterns and accessories.
Keito: I've always taken good care of you, and so you wanted to show me how much you’ve grown… Well, I don’t really think I’ve been able to help you nearly as much as you’ve helped me recently.
Keito: But still, you do respect and rely on me.
Keito: I’m always available for you to occasionally consult for advice. It might not feel easy, but you can call me whenever.
Keito: In regards to the designs, is it alright if I look over them now? I'm afraid you'll just have to sit idle in the meantime…
Keito: You’re asking if I’d like some tea? Hm… I wouldn’t mind some hot tea, but… Sorry for making you serve me, even though I invited you over to my house in the first place.
Keito: The kitchen is down the hallway, to the right. Feel free to use the teapot and tea leaves on the shelf.
Keito: In the meantime, I’ll repay your kindness by looking over these designs meticulously… ♪
[Later]
Tumblr media
Keito: … Thank you, Anzu. I had a look through the design proposals.
Keito: Now, don’t look so worried. The thought of lecturing you hadn’t even crossed my mind, rather, I’m overflowing with praise.
Keito: Maybe it’s due to the fact that I’m the one that’s going to wear it, there were an abundance of Kimono-style designs.
Keito: I could discern from these design proposals that you tried your hardest to figure out how to make it feel like ‘me’.
Keito: Some of them felt inspired by the design of costumes I’ve worn in the past. They reminded me of Tsukimi Live and Daikagura, so it made me feel a little nostalgic.
Keito: And the ideas on this page, they were inspired by the Halloween performance from the other day, right?
Keito: Taking into consideration the fact that this is my ‘Special Outfit’, I felt that a Kimono would be best. I was also drawn to this idea because of the beautiful ornaments and accessories.
Keito: … Thank you for coming up with so many different ideas for me.
Keito: As I looked through each of your ideas, I could feel how much you’ve grown, and it deeply moved me.
Keito: You definitely aren’t the same person as the ‘you’ back in the days of the ‘Quarrel Festival’ that would think up unhinged plans. Something like the ‘Wasshoi festival’ or whatever, you’d never—
Keito: Oi, wait. Why are you looking at me like that. Don’t tell me you haven’t given up on the ‘Beat the Heat! Wasshoi something festival’?
Tumblr media
Keito: …Just to be sure, I’ll check. You haven’t made any such designs for my ‘Special Outfit’…
Keito: Don’t be in such a hurry to deny it, it makes you look even more suspicious. If you haven’t actually proposed it as an idea, I won’t say anything.
Tumblr media
Keito: Well, I’ll let you off the hook. The idea seemed to have crossed your mind…. But you managed to exercise self-control this time, so I’ll let it slide.

August 1 - Kaohsiung - Lotus Pond, Qishan Train Station Museum
This morning, our first stop was the Lotus Pond and the temples over the water. First, we stopped at the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas. Unfortunately, it was under construction, and there were scaffoldings all around it, so we couldn't fully grasp its beauty. However, we could still go into the Dragon and the Tiger. As in any temple, you have to enter into the dragon side and leave through the Tiger side, as we saw already in the temple in Taipei. Inside showed Confucius' Twenty-four Filial Exemplars on the left and hell on the right side (see images below). The mural was fascinating and beautifully made. The giant dragon and tiger were super cool to walk into and experience that temple. Next, we went to the Spring and Autumn Pavilions. Right in the center, there was a much longer dragon that you could walk inside of. Conversely, people were praying at shrines built inside of this dragon. Around the dragon were two pavilions and a long walkway down to the final pavilion with a second story. We walked out over there and enjoyed the view from the center of the Lotus Pond.
Afterward, we got treated to an all-you-can-eat Mongolian BBQ lunch. It was delicious, and I stuffed myself with as much as possible. Finally, we went to the Qishan Train Station, but there wasn't much there, so we didn't stay for long. The old train cars were interesting to see. As I write this, it is 5:00 pm, and there is still time in the day, but our class activities are over. I plan to go to the Rui Feng Night Market for dinner, so I will upload another post with what I eat after this one!
Academic Reflection
On the bus going towards the Lotus Pond and inside the dragon at the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, our tour guide Peter had taught me about Confucius' Twenty-four Filial Exemplars. These stories were a Confucious text written in the Yuan dynasty as an example of respecting one's parents and elders. Each of the 24 stories inside the dragon was depicted on a mural. Knowing a few from Peter and then reading about them afterward has allowed me to appreciate it much more. Here are some examples of the stores: One son was in a poor family that did not have mosquito nets, so instead of letting his parents get bit, he allowed the mosquitoes to drain him until they were full. One son sold himself into servitude to pay for his father's funeral expenses. Emperor Wen of the Han Dynasty tasted his mother's medicine to ensure it was safe and effective. These are just three of the twenty-four stories in this Pagoda mural (Jordan 1-8).
Overall, learning these stories depicts the culture of respecting your elders, which is prevalent here, in China, and anywhere in which Confucius' lessons are heavily followed. Although in the US, we, too, mostly respect our elders, it is nothing compared to how much they do here and how it is depicted in this lesson. This is one culture that is important and is something that we should pick up in the US.

July 13th - Longshan Buddhist Temple, National Museum of History, Botanical Gardens, and Ximen Red House
Today, we started with an authentic market. They mostly sold meats, fruits and vegetables, but it was super interesting to see the different types of cuisine available in this country compared to America. There were so many different types of fruit that I have never seen before and they were selling huge slabs of shark meat. Then, we went to the Longshan Buddhist Temple, which was super beautiful. It was fun to partake in some of the culture and see how big a role religion plays here. Next, we went to the Botanical Gardens and the National Museum of History. There were lotus flowers in bloom and the museum had lots of art. Lastly, we stopped at Ximen Red House and we did lots of shopping around that area. Our group got hotpot together, which was super good and some of the people in our group were very adventurous with what they were eating (I was not).
Academic Reflection
Unfortunately, we did not get to do the cultural center because it was closed, which is what most of our reading was focused on, so instead I will be using other resources to discuss what I have learned. First, our tour guide described to use the method of asking questions at the Longshan Temple. There are moon blocks, called Jiaobei, which you ask a yes or no question to and then when you throw them, they tell you your answer. One up and one down means yes, two flat side up means maybe, and two crescent side up means no. After you have your answer from the blocks, you can further confirm by grabbing a stick with a number on it at random. Then, after you have this number you bring it to a box with a matching number and open the box to find a poem, which should give you the answers you seek. There were so many different types of gods to pray to. Each one served a different purpose. For example, there was a god of medicine and a god of grades. It is also common practice to give an offering to the gods in order to please them. The next thing I would like to discuss is the importance of the Ximen Red House. After Japan suffered defeat in WWII, many Chinese immigrants came to Taiwan and enjoyed what the Red House Theater had to offer. It played everything from western films to old black and white martial arts movies. It was revitalized and today, it hosts an array of shops and cultural information.

Jo'on Yorigami:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bottom art by Rihito
The Yorigami Sisters are some of the worst, most hated people in Gensokyo, and for good reason. They bring nothing but failure and misery to people, including themselves.
Jo'on (pronounced John) is a god of pestilence. Touhou 15.5 and 17.5 are the only two Touhou games to have official English translations, and in those her name is spelled "Jyoon", but I'm going with the fan spelling because it's closer to her name's pronunciation. Jo'on is named after the Daisy fleabane (himejon).
Jo'on influences people to waste their money on frivolous things, thinking that they're doing it of their own free will. As they waste their money, she gains it, until they're left destitute. That said, she isn't really rich. She herself wastes her money on frivolous things and almost never saves anything from her heists.
Her older sister, Shion Yorigami, is a god of poverty and misfortune. But she'll be discussed later.
They are both the main villains and final boss of Touhou 15.5: Antinomy of Common Flowers. Jo'on Yorigami hatched a scheme to gain lots of money by robbing a concert. She took advantage of the urban legend incident by creating Perfect Possession just by spreading rumors that it was possible. Then, when the audience was in a distracted, dream-like state, she and Shion would possess each and every person and take all their money.
After the Yorigami Sisters are defeated, Jo'on is forced to go to the Myouren Temple, as Byakuren believes she can be rehabilitated. Additionally, her and Shion are to defeat and round up all the berserk Dream World counterparts unleashed by their incident. While Jo'on hated it at first, seeing Dream World Byakuren show off her hidden lazy, controlling side made her wonder if there was hope for her yet.
...Unfortunately, Jo'on quickly became bored and left. However, she may have learned a little compassion from it. Now she usually only targets those who actually have money to waste.
In Curiosities of Lotus Asia, it's revealed that before the Perfect Possession incident, Jo'on used her abilities to mind control Sumireko into bringing a ton of expensive meats and alcohol from the outside world, only to possess Sumireko and party. Ironically, shortly beforehand, Sumireko was bragging about how she had "true freedom" by being countercultural while her peers were slaves to mass media. Only for her to be mind controlled and truly LOSE her freedom.
In Touhou 17.5: Sunken Fossil World, Gensokyo suffers a massive oil spill. The Yorigami Sisters try to profit off of the oil... except they have no idea why oil is actually valuable. They go around basically splashing oil at people thinking it will allow them to buy things. This is in the greater goal of becoming rich enough to change their beings into gods of wealth rather than of poverty. Kanako even mocks them as the most pathetic excuses for gods in all of Gensokyo.
They seemingly have the last laugh, however, as they manage to become suprisingly successful tour guides of the oil fields. Of course, they then abandon the tourist to their doom after having them sign a clause absolving the Sisters of any responsibility for what happens down there. The narrator does say that this will likely end in failure, though, as nothing good will ever come of the Yorigami Sisters, even to themselves. Most likely Reimu will kick their butts again.
Jo'on is loud, crass, and obnoxious. She's incredibly arrogant, being willing to talk down to people far stronger than she is.
Still, deep down there is a shred of goodness to her, a willingness to change and become a better person. She just ignores it because being a good person is boring. Being evil and selfish is more fun. She can make some good plans, but they’re all very short-term and don't usually give lasting results.
Jo'on primarily attacks with the golden flames around her. She often embues them into her punches. As for ranged attacks, she shoots words at you! Golden characters for terms like "Gold", "Wealth", and "Treasure". She also attacks by throwing gold and jewels around. She even has an attack where she empties a whole suitcase of money and then burns it all! In general all her attacks are flashy and extravagant. In Sunken Fossil World, she attacks by splashing oil around.
Oh, and sometimes she pulls a limousine out of nowhere and runs her sister over with it. Dunno how she got ANY kind of automobile into Gensokyo.
While I don't know for certain, I've heard Jo'on and Shion are based on the Post-War Economic Miracle and Lost Decade periods of Japan, which correspond to the 60s-80s and the 90s, respectively. Jo'on's spellcards "Queen of Financial Bubbles" and "Extortionist of the 80s" seem to suggest this.
Oh, and all her clothes are knockoff brands. Apparently Sumireko knows this.

✭ pairing: senna x seren (s/i)
✭ word count: 1997
✭ note: second piece for the pride prompts!! this time featuring my darling wife. very very long ago (summer of 2020) one of my friends decided that senna would call me 'lotus' as a pet name, and that changed the trajectory of my life forever. anyways, my main grievance with this fic is that i realized a little too late that there is a vastayan temple in the lore called "the temple of lilly and lotus" that i could've had senna n seren visit instead of this random made up one. it would've been easier to write and farrrrr more realistic. but y'know! what can you do. enjoy my imaginary nameless greenglade temple.
✭ tag list: @dragonselfship and that's it for today
[ reblogs always appreciated // prompt list can be found here! ]
Tumblr media
To her, Senna is like a flower.
Not in the sense that she's delicate. No, certainly not. But in the sense that she's uniquely beautiful—her eyes are the color of electric green Gladiolus blooms, her skin as soft as rose petals. She's as thorny as a rose, too, but Seren’s hands are eager to bleed.
She's as breathtaking as any spring flowerbed, but the blossom that reminds Seren of her the most is the lotus.
She recalls reading about them in the Botanicum; the lotus flower represents a state of mental purity and spiritual perfection. They grow from dark, muddy waters, and yet they emerge without so much as a stain on their petals. They symbolize rebirth, and what better flower to associate with Senna than one that symbolizes the very core of her existence? She, too, emerged from the darkness as something beautiful.
Seren enjoys using natural things—flowers, animals, and so forth—as pet names. She’s very deliberate about the ones she chooses for specific people, like how she occasionally refers to Lucian as their sunflower because sunflowers symbolize loyalty and honesty. With that in mind, it’s surprising that she’s never called Senna by lotus, but that’s only because Senna beat her too it. Shortly after Seren began referring to Senna as lavender (after the lavender perfume she would often wear), Senna began referring to Seren as lotus. Both nicknames stuck, and they persist to this day.
A few months ago, Seren asked Senna where the whole lotus thing came from, and at first, she said she wasn’t sure. But after a while, she began calling on the flower’s spiritual meaning as well, saying that she thought Seren was both strong and beautiful, so the name felt fitting.
That flustered Seren. To be referred to as strong by the strongest person she’s ever met is truly a special feeling.
Today, they're in Ionia. They came here on a business escapade that has more or less turned into Seren giving them a tour of her old stomping grounds. She hardly remembers why they’re here, but she knows that, for once, she’s very happy to be home.
They’re camping out in Navori, just beside the Greenglade. Lucian is away at the marketplace. Retrospectively, Seren should’ve really gone with him to keep him from getting lost or robbed, but she is confident in his safety and trusts that he’ll return by nightfall. Meanwhile, it’s just her and Senna.
Senna is sitting beside the dying fire, polishing the cracks and crevices of her cannon. A relic weapon made from the shattered pieces of dozen others, it often requires extra maintenance to remain functional and presentable. Seren is sitting on the grass beside her bedroll, staring up at the trees, watching the leaves flutter in the warm afternoon breeze. The silence between them is comfortable and familiar, but that doesn’t keep Seren from growing bored of it.
“Are you busy?” Seren asks, picking up her head to look at Senna.
“Sort of,” Senna responds lowly. “Why?”
Seren looks down at the cannon and the dust-covered tag that Senna is clenching in her fist. Then, she looks back up at Senna.
“You’re not busy,” Seren tells her, lips quirking into a sly half-smile, her signature ‘we’re doing what I want to do because I said so’ look. Senna sighs out of her nose, but she listens to her regardless. “There’s a temple near here. Do you wanna go check it out?”
“Depends,” Senna moves her cannon off her lap like it weighs nothing. “Is this going to be like the time you got all of the sentinels kicked out of the Kinkou Monastery?”
Seren laughs heavily. That was- what? Two years ago now? “No, no! This temple is open to the public. I used to go there all the time when I was younger.”
“But when was the last time you went there, actually?” Senna presses. “In human years, please.”
Seren pauses for a moment. It takes her quite some time to translate her vastayan lifespan into human years, but eventually, she comes up with a rough estimate. “Two-hundred, give or take. But I promise the rules haven’t changed!”
“You said that about the monastery, too.”
“I may have lied about that,” Seren says, her chest clenching when she sees disappointment cross Senna’s features, “but I thought it would’ve been fine, since I knew a few members of the order who used to let me hang around the gardens… but that’s neither here nor there. Ionian temples are peaceful places that are open to all. It’s really pretty there. I think you’d like it.”
Senna stares at her for a moment, pondering. Seren’s almost-smile widens into a big, toothy grin. She knows that her wife can’t say no to her.
“Okay, fine.” Senna sighs. She rises slowly, reluctantly, and by the time she's finally standing, Seren has long since sprung to her feet and pulled her things together.
Senna insisted that they bring their weapons with them. Seren thinks that it's foolish, considering the Black Mist seldom reaches beyond Valoran nowadays, but Senna has always been of the mentality that it's better to be safe than sorry. Seren agrees with it, to an extent, and she also understands why and how Senna adopted that mentality. So, she never argues. She does little except gaze upon her with a subtle sadness.
They now walk through some of the most beautiful and peaceful glades that Runeterra has to offer, lugging around a cannon and a pair of gleaming daggers. Seren has never shown up to a temple armed, so all she can do is hope that the monks and caretakers won't see them as threats. Sentinels of Light aren't seen as threatening, right? The Kinkou had seemed to think they were. Oh, to Hell with them.
The walk is calm and quiet. For most of it, they're silent, drinking up the sights, the sounds, the beauty of it all. For Senna, it's one of her first times passing through here, but for Seren, it just might be her three-thousandth; every piece of land is engraved deep within her memory. She could walk these trails with her eyes closed. They pass a familiar landmark—a large stump, about twice the width of Seren's torso, wrapped in a thick cover of red and orange vines—and Seren suddenly remembers how often she used to come this way when she was younger. She'd spend days at the temple, idling under blossoming oriental trees, lounging beside the ponds. Doing nothing, thinking nothing, feeling everything.
"I use to spend so much time here,” she tells Senna. “The Greenglade felt like the safest place for me when I didn’t have a home.”
Senna hums, nodding along with what she’s saying.
“Whenever I needed something, like food or clean clothes, I’d go to one of the markets just beyond the wood. Whenever I needed the company of something other than animals, I’d go to the temple and hang out with the monks.”
They pass over a small, rickety, wooden bridge. The path turns from mossy cobblestone to dirt. They’re getting close.
“The monks were always happy to see me. A stray, gangly vastayan child. I swear, I almost became the garden pet.” Seren laughs dryly, but her smile fades in a moment’s time. “I watched a lot of monks, gardeners, and caretakers come and go in my time. Time went so fast when I was living in my own head. A hundred years was nothing, but for them, it was just over a lifetime.”
Silence blankets them again, and Seren realizes how grim her rambles had gotten. Her face heats up, shame bubbling up in her chest.
“I’m sorry,” she glances toward Senna, who’s expression softens before her eyes. “Was that too much?”
Senna shakes her head earnestly. The look on her face is nothing short of kind and patient. “No, not at all.” She says. “I like listening to you talk.”
Shame is replaced by yearning, giving the warmth in her cheeks a whole new meaning. She smiles shyly before glancing away.
Eventually, they pass two sculptures; candid portraits of two figures carved from pale marble, one human and one vastaya. Seren remembers asking the monks about the vastaya when she was a child. His name was Mik’ua, and he was a poet and a warrior from the Kepthalla tribe.
The statues mark the beginning of the temple grounds. Beautiful, sprawling gardens surround the pagoda. Seren hears a soft gasp leave Senna's mouth, and a smile grows on her own face.
"Told you it was pretty," Seren says.
"I believed you," Senna replies, tone hushed and awed.
The temple's inhabitants pay them little mind. Seren recognizes a few of them from her last visit. They offer her gentle smiles as she passes them. She can tell that Senna is at peace here, but she is also surprised by the others' hospitality. She can't blame her; she's seen many of Ionia's uglier inhabitants, from the very rude members of the Kinkou order to Seren's own family, but these lands can be kind, too.
In the middle of the gardens sits a small pond, which is surrounded by all sorts of colorful flora. Seren bounds over to it, leaving Senna to do whatever it is she's doing—admiring various sculptures and engravings, it seems. Seren crouches beside the water, her tail flicking back and forth in a playful manner as she scans it with her eyes. To her delight, amongst the reeds and water grass sits a dense patch of lotus flowers. A lopsided grin pulls at her mouth as she reaches out to touch the nearest flower. She runs her fingers over the silken petals, admiring their brilliant whites and pinks, and noting how they contrast the muddy depths below.
"Senna," Seren calls over her shoulder. "Senna, c'mere!"
Senna is very quick to oblige, abandoning whatever she was looking at to join Seren at the water's edge.
"Would you look at that," she remarks as she crouches beside Seren's hip, a light chuckle in her voice. "A lotus for my lotus."
Seren snorts. "Holy shit, that's cheesy." She sits back, releasing the flower from her grasp. "Especially for you."
Senna laughs in reply, shouldering her playfully. "What? I'm allowed to be sweet."
"You are, you are." Seren agrees with a smile. Wow, she thinks. Someone's in way too good of a mood.
Senna places a hand on Seren's knee, and Seren coves it with her own, squeezing. "I still can't believe that I became lotus and you didn't."
"I feel like we've had this conversation before," Senna says. "I still can't believe I became lavender. I wore that perfume maybe three times."
"Shut up!" It's Seren's turn to shove her about, digging an elbow into her side and prying a hearty laugh from her. "It's your signature scent. That and, like, salt and blood. But those don't make great pet names, do they?"
Senna resigns, shaking her head. "No, they don't."
There's silence for a while. They sit hip-to-hip, their hands interlocked, eyes grazing the beautiful landscape before them. Beyond the pond filled with lotus flowers is a blossoming oriental tree that sprinkles its petals into the water. Above them is a perfect blue sky, with white puffs of clouds providing enough coverage to keep them from burning up. A cool breeze blows through Seren's hair, carrying with it the scent of flowers.
"Thank you for bringing me here," Senna says after a long moment.
"Of course," Seren replies, turning to give her a quick peck on the cheek. She pauses momentarily to admire how it makes her smile. "You should listen to me when I say to take more breaks."
"I'm working on it," Senna hums. She leans into Seren's shoulder, which, even after a decade of marriage well spent, makes Seren's heart stutter.
Seren doesn't say anything else, and neither does Senna. They enjoy this fleeting moment of peace in each other's presence.
