Today In History Louise Beavers best known for her character actor roles in both silent and sound films was born in Cincinnati, OH on this date March 8, 1902. She performed in more than 100 films including: “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” and “Imitation of Life.” She was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1976. Beavers started her career in the 1920s. At the time, black people in films were limited to acting in only very few roles, usually as slaves or domestic help. She played the "mammy" in many of the movies in which she acted. She started to gain more attention in the acting world after she played the role of Julia in Coquette (1929), which starred Mary Pickford. In this film, she played the black maid and mother figure to a young white woman. As she became better known, Beavers began to speak against Hollywood's portrayal and treatment of African Americans, both during production and after promoting the films. Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 42: Holiday Inn 🦌 Ugh. I want to like this movie more. It in theory *should* be higher on the list. But the fact is, no matter how good, entertaining, classic, etc the rest of the film is, it will be forever and always marred by racism. I don't care that it was literally 80 years ago, and that "minstrel" shows and blackface were still common, and supposedly accepted then. It was racism then, it's racism now. While I appreciate them doing at least the bare minimum by including a note about it at this start of the film (I added a shot of it), and and extra feature discussing it featuring mostly POC, it nevertheless is uncomfortable, unentertaining, and again, racist. I still fast forward through it every time. Okay, that aside, this is another that just came out on 4K this year, and the picture does look good, and, if not for the aforementioned problem, the movie would be a top notch classic. Celebrating Day 17 of Black History Month with the super talented Louise Beavers. “Film and television actress, Louise Beavers, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she was part of an act called “Lady Minstrels” before moving to Los Angeles to begin her film career in the silent films, “Gold Diggers” (1923) and “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” (1927). Beavers appeared in more than 100 films between 1929 and 1960, playing the role most available to the few African American actresses able to work steadily in Hollywood, maid to the white female star.
