I should probably start by saying that no other location so far cast a spell on me quite like Mykonos. But let’s start at the beginning of this journey. Mykonos was not my first destination choice for this holiday. It was actually third on my list.
How it all started
I purchased a ticket way back in March for a different Greek island – Crete, but throughout the summer, I’ve been told that even though Crete was great for beaches, there was not much else to do there.
Then Santorini came to mind, but after some research I realized that 1 week trip would be pretty expensive & I was interested in cutting my travel costs in half.
Mykonos was that perfect combination of everything I was looking for & accommodation was way cheaper than Santorini.
The dates were set in place, ticket purchased, apartment booked & so the countdown began. I was travelling with a girlfriend from London. She picked the dates, I picked the location. She was flying in to Athens first for the weekend, then meeting me in Mykonos on Monday. This was September by the way, when high season was over but there was still a level of vibrant life on the island.
Love at first sight
Mykonos was for sure love at first sight for me, but not like Rome, New York or Vegas, this was way better! I remember saying “I love this place so much” for the first 3 days non stop! Everything was white, fresh, beautiful, vibrant & chill at the same time. I felt like Alice in Wonderland. The energy of the island is absolutely beautiful. There is simplicity, beauty & good vibes everywhere. It’s refreshing & breathtaking at the same time.
Mykonos is Expensive!
I have been warned by a few people that Mykonos is very expensive & yes part of that is true, because prices are way higher at a lot of places, but you can also make it a budget trip which isn’t hard to do, especially if you are in a group.
You will find that things like beach beds, shisha and drinks are crazy high at a lot of popular tourist places, but you can also find much cheaper, deals & free options at different locations or nearby.
There are also many beautiful beaches which you can enjoy for absolutely free, just bring your beach towel with you and park it for free.
Location, Location, Location
I wasn’t renting a car for this trip, so I picked Mykonos town as our base location. This is in my opinion the place to be. If you love people watching, this is your spot. If you love shopping, your #1 place. If you simply want to be close to all the Instagramable hot spots, cool restaurants & nightlife, this is for sure your spot! Bonus: Everything is walking distance! The buses in Mykonos are awesome! They run really late & they are pretty cheap so this was our go to transportation option.
Island Time
For me, the time stood still in Mykonos. That 1 magical week felt like a month, except it felt more timeless than that. There is just no logical way to describe it as it’s something you just gotta experience for yourself!
Favorite Moments
The entire trip is my favorite moment! I love how everything in Mykonos unfolds naturally. It truly is the best way to experience the island without too much planning ahead.
Apart from Wednesday 12th September plans, the entire trip went like this: We woke up & made an outline of what we would do that day & then we went for it & sometimes plans changed a little along the way & sometimes we followed them as planned.
It is best to go with the magic of Mykonos flow!

Falling for Mykonos
Mykonos is gorgeous.
This should be the end of the post. It’s just so magical it exceeded my expectations and it was exactly what I needed. The small, narrow streets of Little Venice, just a few blocks away from my hotel, still linger the party vibe of the summer yet, they now host a new humidity of the upcoming fall, perfect to fight the heat. Cats roam more freely, without tourists petting them. The windmills are craving for the flashy attention they used to have not so long ago. People are still friendly and welcoming: home made food, sea delicacies and sweet treats are some of Mykonos well known secrets.
After leaving my stuff in the hotel, I headed to Little Venice to have a drink, some proper food and let Mykonos surprise me. It surely did. With a pink and purple sunset only seen in movies, I had what started as a shy drink and ended up in a pre-game party, 3 glasses of prosecco in with 4 new friends from NYC and Canada in Sunset Rhapsody. This venue, half indoors half outdoors, has a fantastic cozy balcony from where one can enjoy the sunset, the famous windmill view without the wind making you feel cold. It was fantastic. I’m happy I’ve met these great guys. Daryl, let’s get some sushi soon!
Not only these guys were amazingly fun, but they also had superb recommendations when it came to food. I was lucky to run into them, since they were already in the island for almost a week, trying all the delicacies in town. As soon as I finished the drinks, I head up to their first outstanding suggestion: To maroleio. This family taverna is owned and run by the twins Isidoros and Dimitri who, with the help of Martina, serve Greek delicacies every night. I went with what it was suppose to be a glass of red wine but ended up being a house courtesy quarter bottle and a sampling test of Samos sweet wine. Add the previous prosecco, I was on point! I had the Greek Sausage, and the house stew night special. Their warmth and kindness made the whole Mykonos welcome a memorable one. I wanted to go back to eat again since it was delicious and the service was so, so great but I decided to check out other venues. I wish I could go back and finally finish checking all the menu specialties.
After a to-go ice-cream stop by Hibiscus Crepperia I headed back to the hotel to finally rest a bit to kick it off with full of energy the following day. It was early and the season was ending, so I didnt find much bars opens that night. The following morning, a perfectly brewed cafe was waiting for me on the corner of my hotel, in a charming and tiny corner venue. Cafe Vero can’t host many people, and by night they serve wine and drinks, at its the perfect spot to admire the Mykonos old port and bay.
The beauty about waking up early is that you have the whole city to yourself. Empty streets, sunny alleys, sleeping cats, all of which are almost posing for you to capture their best angle.
I went to Paradise Beach given my friend Xenia’s recommendation (she came in the midst of the season), taking the bus from Fabrika. After my morning tan by the Winds, in a lonely and beautiful cliff, a refreshing and so-needed Greek Salad before departing in Cosme, I ended up in Paradise. With my chocolate cookies, I spent my afternoon by the beach. Later on, music started playing and I headed to the real party place: Tropicana Bar. With comfy puffs and reclinable sunbeds, it’s the perfect spot for listening to some tunes, while having a drink. There’s a cover fee of 15 euros but, once you are there, it’s good to take it. After a while, some friendly bartenders come over and invite you to where the magic happens: the dance floor, where chupitos, dancers, locals and tourists alike dance and drink their holidays away. The king of it all, the master behind the fun, the emperor of Tropicana is Sasa (pronounced: sa-sha), the Italian best known as “the king of Mykonos” - insert elephant emoji here - for a reason:
Sasa was charming, fun and gentle, welcoming me to Tropicana. He introduced me to his friends and invited me to the last closing party of the season. Unfortunately I had already plans for the following evening so, I’ll take that invite next time, amigo! But a there’s a thing for sure: when you think about partying in Greece, Sasa is your man.
Once back, I had a shower and went for fresh pasta in Barkia. Great place, expensive thou. It was so fresh I had some issues pealing the full-body shrimps served on top of my spaghetti - such an American problem to have, and a shameful experience to confess in a food blog. They were huge! I’ve been served fresh shrimp and lobsters tails before, but never the whole crustaceous, where I needed to clean it and remove things from them before eating. It was an enormous challenge. It reminded me of that story when little kids find out that hamburgers, those delicious, rounded shaped pieces of heaven come actually from cows!! I guess this limited my experience, but lesson learned: when in Europe, where things are fresh, and you are by the sea, be willing to do the hard work or go for the carbonara instead! It really caught me off guard, since this is also a common practice in Asia. I guess I’ve been in the US for too long, so I’m happy I’m here in Greece checking in with reality once again. The tiramisu was delicious and the presentation and service was great too.
During my last day in Mykonos, after a fresh orange juice and pretty decent vegan sandwich in Healthylicious, I decided to go beach-hopping. Platys Gialos and Platis Psarou were the chosen ones. Beautiful views, delicious Aegean weather, perfect relaxation point to finish my book “Modern Love”, the New York Times column selection of unknown authors and real stories. After a fantastic lunch with a view, and an extremely cute baby-cat encounter, it was time to go back. I was in front of To maroleio once again, but I remembered my friend telling me Avra was also super nice due to the ambience and the setting. So, I kept walking and found the hidden garden of Avra. A beautiful open-space and house backyard, with Bougainvillea trees all over, covering the cobblestone ground with tiny bits of pink, was the perfect place to say goodbye to Mykonos. I finally got the Carbonara I was craving for, and ended up meeting 3 new friends: Sebastian, a German banker, Louysa, NY based, Canadian recruiter and Dora, an all-mighty medical IT specialist. Once again, inspiring women, from all over the world, were leading the way for my new path ahead - talking about re-shaping oneself and thinking about the next move... the Universe knows, it can’t get wiser than Greece! Thank you Mykonos, not only you are wonderful, but you did me good.

Fish Tanks Update
My school (grant and loan) money hit and while the bulk of it went to bills, I was given a bit to put towards my fish tanks. Since my fish tanks are my therapy, this is one part fun money, but also one part mental health. Though, one could argue that having a bit of fun money to blow once in awhile even when you are really poor is good for you.
Tank #1 the 5G: George, the albino sunburst platy, came out and 10 Blue Velvet shrimp went in. This took about half of my money alone. These guys are pricey, but I’ve been plotting and preparing for this tank for a year now, bit by bit, so it was time to bite the bullet and get the shrimp in there. This tank sits on my desk and so I’ll be able to watch them swim about while I’m working on stuff. I can’t even express how excited I am for this tank. It’s very heavily planted with lots (LOTS) or algae so it’s kind of hard to find the shrimp at the moment. But they are also babies right now. They will get bigger and they will breed. Plus every now and then I catch movement and spot one. Whatever dudes, it’s shrimp paradise in there and I love this tank.
Tank #2 the 10G: This tank has not changed. It’s where my Betta Davis and his snail friend lives. It’’s planted but not heavily. It’s well established and I’m happy with it.
Tank #3 the 20G: This tank went through a major overhaul today. I took all the fish back to the store because either I couldn’t keep a school going due to die off or they were too big for the tank. Basically a few months ago the pet store lady convinced me that Blue Gouramis were great for a 20G. I was stupid and listened. Then came home and did a little research and spoiler alert: Blue Gouramis get to be 5 inches long. So I kept them for a few months so I could enjoy them, but it was time to take them back. The Zebra Danios, meanwhile, I kept trying to keep a school of 6-8 going, but I kept losing members for stupid reasons. So i finally gave up and I wanted to go a different route with the tank, so I took the zebras back to the store.
Anyway, while at that store I bought a second betta fish named Betta Midler and a small chunk of change worth of plants. All the plastic had to come out because plastic and bettas don’t mix, but that was fine because it was all gross anyway with algae. Then while at the second store, the specialty shop where I bought the shrimp, I picked up 10 Harlequin Rasboras which make great tank mates with Bettas.
George, the albino Sunburst Platy is also in this tank again. He started here, but got moved when the non-albino sunburst platy’s tried to kill him for being different. George gets the last laugh, because they all died in a mass tank die off (faulty sponge filter not putting enough oxygen into the water, fish need oxygen, I didn’t catch it in time), and George wasn’t in that tank so he lived. I do need to keep an eye on the Platy/Betta situation. But so far they seem to ignore each other. They have definitely seen each other but George is bigger than the Betta and the Betta isn’t threatened by George’s lack of color. He isn’t even flaring. I think it helps that the Betta was introduced to the tank with George already there. Anyway, we’ll see. I check on them frequently and they keep to their separate sides thus far, so I’m either being lulled into a false sense of security, or it’ll really be ok. Thank god for genetic mutations, I guess. It’s saved George’s life twice now. I don’t know what else to do with George otherwise. The 14yo has taken a liking to him (the 14yo is the one who named him) and while I’ll rehome his fish to save his life, it would break some hearts around here. George can’t go back in the 5G because he’ll eat the shrimp and well, he’s getting too big for a 5G. Platys get to be a couple inches worth of fish. So I’m just going to pray to Poseidon that the Betta and George get along. Or at least ignore each other.
Speaking of Betta Midler, I’ll get pictures tomorrow, but he’s a dinky little thing. I’m so use to Betta Davis (who as 18 months old is full grown) and I forgot how tiny a Betta can be. He’s also... well I asked outright for the betta that had been sitting on the shelves the longest. The one that nobody seemed to want. Which, he’s actually kinda cute and already showing some blue color so I don’t know why nobody wanted him. He is “just” a veil tail which “isn’t as fancy” as some of the others. But I think a heated and filtered tank will be good for him and he has great potential. Whatever, I love him and that’s all that matters.
So that’s how I blew my fun money. It was all carefully plotted, though, so I feel accomplished. And I can enjoy my tanks. Because I really enjoy the zen feeling of sitting in front of the calming tank. I actually haven’t felt that was about my 20G in awhile because I’ve been having such bad luck with it. But I’ve got it reworked now and I think I’ll find my peace with it once more. Now I just need to get some black cardboard to tape up to the sides to block out the light to cut back on algae growth. But that’s tomorrow’s project.

Mykonos, Greece
Day 35 - Athens to Mykonos
I woke up before dawn and made my way to Piraeus, the main port in Athens, catching an early morning ferry bound for Mykonos. This small island is in the Cyclades - a cluster of 220 Greek islands in the middle of the Aegean Sea. The journey by ferry was not a quick one - the size of a small cruise ship, it took about 7 hours to get to Mykonos! There were brief stops at Syros and Tinos along the way, two picturesque Greek islands with little white homes built around the ports like an amphitheatre.
Port of Chora, Mykonos
The sky was brilliantly blue and the sun was shining as my ferry docked in Mykonos by mid afternoon. I boarded a sea bus to take me into the old port of Chora (Mykonos City). The downtown of this little Greek Island was like a postcard - turquoise blue water, cobblestoned alleys, white houses like sugar cubes and picture windows with brightly coloured frames. Bougainvillea flowers lined little alleys filled with bustling shops, bars and restaurants.
November on the Greek Islands in considered to be “shoulder season”, and Mykonos was evidently quieter than it would be mid summer. Usually known for its beautiful beaches, packed seaside bars, and bumping nightlife, Mykonos in the fall has a more relaxed feel. This was a very welcome break after the rollercoaster the past few weeks of travel had been! Although I still found the temperature to be perfect in the low 20s, many islanders would be wearing warm coats - as it is considered to be winter!
My first evening I relaxed, writing some postcards to friends back home, on one of the many restaurant patios circling the port. I had a delicious gyro wrap, and an entire plate of feta cheese! (Soon to become my new food group!)
Day 36
I spend my second day in Mykonos exploring the winding streets of Mykonos town, following a breakfast of Greek coffee and pastries from a local bakery near my hostel. Chora (old town) of Mykonos is a labyrinth of bright white alleys, and many dead ends! Free of cars and scooters, pedestrians are able to meander through the marble, cobblestoned streets.
Tiny white churches can be found at every bend throughout the old city of Mykonos, with many more visible in the surrounding hilltops. There are over 500 such churches on the island (for a population of 12,500!). Over 90% of the population of Greece is considered to be Greek Orthodox, and it is also not uncommon to see shrines on the roadside or on private property. These shrines often have a small candle to light, and several religions icons.
One of the many little white churches scattered around the streets of Chora
The impressive windmills of Kato Mili are perched alongside the rocky hillside adjacent to Chora. These iconic landmarks are no longer are in use - but were previously of major economic importance in the Cyclades as they were used to mill wheat. Built in the 16th-Century, the windmills continue to be a focal point along the Mykonos skyline, and were beautiful landmarks to visit. There was plenty of cool fall wind during the day, and it was clear how wind power could have easily been used in the past.
Windmills of Kato Mili - formerly used to mill wheat. When in use, these windmills would have white sails connected to the wooden spokes, allowing the wind to be captured
Next to the windmills is Chora’s historic neighbourhood of Little Venice. In this area, the former homes of ship captains are built straight up from the shoreline - causing a strong resemblance to Italy’s famous “floating city”. Bars and balconies are perched directly over the crashing waves below, where visitors and locals alike can enjoy a drink with a view of the windmills. It was a fun, lively area, with many bars and nightclubs tucked away in the white alleys.
Little Venice
The streets around Little Venice are also home to many friendly stray cats -who often try to jump on your lap or rub against your leg, looking for food. I am usually not much of a cat person - but couldn’t help fall in love with some of the little kittens who hung around me!
I had a late picnic lunch next to the historic Panagia Paraportiani Church - which took over 300 years to construct - and is actually 5 Little Greek Orthodox churches which have been joined together! It is a perfect example of the beautiful Cycladic Architecture of Mykonos.
Panagia Paraportiani Church
I ended my day with a few beers at a portside pub, facing the colourful fishing boats in the harbour. It was a terrific, relaxing fall day on the Greek islands.
Day 37
Starting the day with my new habit - Greek coffee! - I caught a short bus ride down to the beach area just south of Chora. This area is home to some of the most beautiful, sandy beaches on the island. Tucked away from the winds in the port, this beaches were hot! True to shoulder season though - the summer crowds had dwindled, and a few of these beaches I had almost completely to myself!
Psarou Beach
Armed with snacks, sunscreen and a book, I set up camp at Psarou Beach for the day and enjoyed the incredible scenery around me. Nammos, the famous beachside bar at Psarou beach, had unfortunately just closed for the season by the time I was there. I kept telling myself that I should make a point to come back again in higher season- to experience this totally different side of the island!
Cliffside hike between the beaches
In the late afternoon, I hiked along the cliffside for about an hour, following the rolling trail connecting the beaches in the South of Mykonos - including Psarou, Platis Gialos, and Paradise Beach. Little lizards would run across my trail as I walked along, taking in the turquoise waters below me. This hike was absolutely a highlight of my time in Mykonos. The picturesque beaches between the cliffs were dotted with countless beach chairs, umbrellas and beachside bars.
Sunset in Little Venice
In the evening I returned to Little Venice just as the sun was setting - where I saw the windmills again, this time as dark silhouettes against a orange and pink streaked sky. I had a terrific Greek Salad (and probably the biggest - portion sizes are very generous in Greece!) next to the ocean and watched the shadows fall over Chora. As it was cooling off, I headed back to my hostel to pack up for my early morning ferry to Naxos the next day - where I would be meeting my friend Megan!
