Rhinoceros may rarely hang out with each other, but they spend lots of time with Oxpeckers sitting on their back, which live off the pesky parasitic insects living in the rhino's thick skin. The birds alert the rhinos by crying loudly.

Continuing from last post... ~ For the most part, the 3 groups of guests I hosted in 2018 joined me specifically to see the Great Migration… who wouldn’t want to see up to 2 million animals working in herds to cross a treacherous river as part of a tens-of-thousands year old ritual!? BUT, going to see the Migration isn’t just about the wildebeest. You’re able to see a diversity of species here found in only a couple of other locations in Africa – most notably, the Big Five. ~ If you haven’t heard of the Big Five, here’s the low-down. They were originally the Top 5 most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa, consisting of 1 Lion, 2 Buffalo, 3 Leopard, 4 Elephant, 5 Black Rhino – but are now the benchmark of an ultimate African safari, minus the hunting part. ~ Last year, on the 1st of October in Serengeti National Park, I led my final group of 4 safari-goers for 2018 to sightings of ALL FIVE of the Big 5, PLUS a Wildebeest Migration, in ONE day, in what was one of the most exhilarating, rewarding days of being an Expedition Leader in my career. The moments of awe, of overwhelming silence as we all gawked in turn at a Lions, Buffalo, Elephants, a lone female Leopard then a lone Black Rhino bull on sunset, plus an earlier Migration, was unlike anything I've ever experienced. At times there weren't words to capture the moment, our wildly-thrown high-fives could've taken eyes out, but the energy and excitement was truly something else! ~ I can’t tell you how excited I am to be able to offer THE Great Migration, and THE Big Five, in one x 9-day ultimate safari package to one of the most unique natural ecosystems existing in the world today! Some beauty came from ashes. On the 18th of December this beautiful rhino bull was shot by poachers. Though a magnificent collaboration between different parties the suspects were apprehended! This was a massive victory. Another rifle and handgun out of the system and out of evil hands. Thanks to Klaserie Private Nature Reserve residents who reported the injured rhino, he could be darted from the helicopter and treated. The first treatment rolled out on the 21st of December 2020. The bull was also dehorned during this immobilisation. On the 12th of January 2021 we had the opportunity to do a critical follow up treatment. According to the veterinary team, the rhino shows remarkable recovery and has a very good chance of surviving this horrendous ordeal. A big thanks to the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve’s Security team, Hemmersbach Rhino Force, SAPS, Hoedspuit plaaswag and The GKEPF for a successful operation that transpired to the apprehension of the suspects. Well done to the Klaserie Warden, Colin Rowles, in conjunction with MTPA who managed to put together both rhino capture operations as well as the dehorning. Roaming across continents and becoming the most abundant and successful mammals of its time. They prehistoric rhinos look very different to today’s modern day rhinos, and actually they were the largest land mammal to ever live. The Paraceratherium stood 5 metres tall and weighed 20 tonneas. It had a longer neck to browse on the leaves. They evolved perfectly to their surroundings. Only changing once early elephants started to evolve and out competed the rhinos with its trunk. Now out of the 5 rhino species still alive today they are all facing the same fate as the wooly rhino from the ice age. Extinction is for ever and the Sumatran rhino is the oldest and most closely related to the ancient wooly rhinos and it is also the closest to extinction with the possibility of only having 30 animals alive today! The Javan rhino in the Ujung Kulon National Park in the western tip of java holds the only known population of the species and there is only 67 left. The Indian rhino is continuing to be poached but the population is increaseing due to strict conservation efforts by the Indian government. There is around 3500. The black rhino numbers went as low as 2000 but numbers are slowly growing with strict conservation initiatives and the numbers are around 5000. The white rhinos, like the ones in the photo, are the most numerous and most heavily poached. There numbers have dropped from 20,000 to as low as 15,000 but who can really trust the stats. ---------------------------------------------------- On average 3 rhinos lose their lives everyday in Africa, at the hand of poachers.
