Repost from @jasonsavagephoto - Some of the most incredible animals you’ll ever meet! Rhinos have been on this planet for for some 50 million years. Roaming across continents and becoming the most abundant and successful mammals of its time. They prehistoric rhinos look very different to today’s modern day rhinos, and actually they were the largest land mammal to ever live. The Paraceratherium stood 5 metres tall and weighed 20 tonneas. It had a longer neck to browse on the leaves. They evolved perfectly to their surroundings. Only changing once early elephants started to evolve and out competed the rhinos with its trunk. Now out of the 5 rhino species still alive today they are all facing the same fate as the wooly rhino from the ice age. Extinction is for ever and the Sumatran rhino is the oldest and most closely related to the ancient wooly rhinos and it is also the closest to extinction with the possibility of only having 30 animals alive today! The Javan rhino in the Ujung Kulon National Park in the western tip of java holds the only known population of the species and there is only 67 left. The Indian rhino is continuing to be poached but the population is increaseing due to strict conservation efforts by the Indian government. There is around 3500. The black rhino numbers went as low as 2000 but numbers are slowly growing with strict conservation initiatives and the numbers are around 5000. The white rhinos, like the ones in the photo, are the most numerous and most heavily poached. There numbers have dropped from 20,000 to as low as 15,000 but who can really trust the stats. ---------------------------------------------------- On average 3 rhinos lose their lives everyday in Africa, at the hand of poachers. #Repost @warriors_for_wildlife with @get_repost ・・・ Kind of looks like the little guy wants to give us a kiss. Which seems like the appropriate post for #valentinesday. If you are feeling generous and would like to help our team on the ground, which will help save vital habitat and everything within that habitat, then visit www.gofundme.com/warriors-for-wildlife Every little bit counts and we are great appreciative. This little rhino is actually doing a flhemen grimace. Which is basically finding a scent on the ground from another rhino, sniffing it and pushing it to the roof of the mouth and into the Jacobson’s organ. This allows a lot of information about that rhino to be processed. 📷 Photo: @jasonsavagephoto ---------------------------------------------------- #savageencounters #loveyourwildlife #dehornedandbeautiful #wildlifephotography #sorai #loverhino #stoppoaching #itsworthsaving #everyrhinocounts #rhino #conservation #earthcapture #forthewild #africa #safari #model #meetsouthafrica #onlyafrica #wwfvoices #mother #baby

Tiger population have reduced upto 93% in India due to Royal hunting and other reasons. The entry of British Raj in the slopes of Himalayas and central India have reduced the Tiger population. Hunting was considered as sign of bravery. . . . #sustainability #ecology #endangered #endangeredspecies #bandhavgarh #bandhavgarhnationalpark #tiger #bigcat #roar #hunt #carnivore #saveanimals #wwf #wwfvoices #india #wildlife #animals #etc #indianwildlife #forest #ecosystem #redlist #tigerreserve #savetiger #durga #hunting #king #himalayas #centralindia #bengaltiger https://www.instagram.com/p/B6nMZVAHJPR/?igshid=1bxf1yulmkd8n

#Repost @kinessajohnson with @warriors_for_wildlife ・・・ #Repost @warriors_for_wildlife ・・・ We were incredibly lucky the other day to be able to see this big pack of wild dogs right near shingwedzi camp, in the #krugernationalpark. These wild dogs are classified as endangered with only around 7000 left. These dogs need massive areas to roam and hunt. Being very active and with a lot of mouths to feed they need to hunt a lot. Back in the day there used to be packs of up to 100 of these wild dogs and with a very good hunting success rate I could only imagine how much they would have consumed. They are very social animals and unlike many other species it’s the females that leave the natal pack once they are sexually mature. The pack share a very strong bond. When they hunt they have very sophisticated and coordinated way to bring down their prey. Every dog has a role to play and they all work together. When one dog is injured the rest of the pack will look after that animal. Some of the main threats to the wild dog populations are snaring, poisoning and farmers shooting them because they are taking their livestock.
