Congratulations on 500 FOLLOWERS! 🎉 Yipeee! You deserve it cause your writing is perfection..! I want to request fluff where the reader is doing a just dance stream with Luca or anyone else I just wanna see how that would go. It would be complete Fluff and it would become so chaotic so fast like not paying attention to their surroundings. -w- i hope it's not too much or too little..but I love your writing and it's amazing! 🎉🎂✨
"You're so cute babe, ..wait-" , With Luca Kaneshiro

A/n : I, am sorry if, this is very ooc. (´;ω;`)
I barely watch Luca's stream (• ▽ •;)
Also thank you for the congratulation!
And thanks you so much for the compliment ( ≧Д≦)
➶◜◝➴
You were watching Luca doing a just dance stream, you were intrigued to join him but at the moment you're busy with something else at the moment. So all you can do is just planning a schedule to play that game for your viewers next week, and you did exactly that.
Today, is the day. It's your turn playing, you started streaming. Everyone greeted you in the chat, sending your oshi marks in the chat. You smiled, "Hey guys, I'm streaming Just dance today! I was interested trying one thanks to Luca." You mentioned Your beloved Mafia Leader, that is currently not far from you. He's just on a different floor in the shared house.
The chat was filled with questions, flooded with 'Luca?' 'Luca Kaneshiro?' they asked, asking for confirmation from you. You are an independent Vtuber, you're not working under any company. You're friends with a lot of other Vtubers, doing collabs with them. You have quite a big amount of fans, and you appreciated them.
"Okay stream let's get started!" You said as you press the start button, and it's only been a few minutes in. You have made a mess, now you know how tough it is when you did it. It seems easy when you watched someone else doing it, but in reality it isn't.
You didn't realize, Luca was watching, he was laughing at you in the chat. Everyone was surprised by his appearance, but they welcomed him warmly. Not long after, he joined your voice call. Scaring you on purpose, making you jump in shock. "OMG LUCA- I-" You yelled at the blonde Mafia as he laughed at your reaction, you softly groaned. "You were so cute in stream babe, I couldn't help it." He said, you didn't mind at first until you realize.
"Luca-"
"What?"
"You, I'm, Streaming.."
"Yeah? So?"
. . .
And then it clicked, "Wait-" Luca immediately laughed out loud. Meanwhile everyone in the chat is like 'BABE?' 'WHAT??' 'DID LUCA JUST-?' flooded with questions and disbelief, "Luca. Kaneshiro." You called your lover by his full name. "Okay! Okay-! Guys, guys. Calm down." He said as you heard shuffling from his side, "Wait let me just, do something real quick." Luca said and leaves the voice call.
And the next few seconds, Luca barges into your room. Proudly greeting everyone in your chat, making the chat went even more confused and shocked at the current situation. More questions flooding in, that you had to take off your VR headset. "Luca what in the actual- what are you doing here-" You slightly yelled at the blondie, the male look over at you smiling. "I am, explaining the chat, our. Relationship." Luca said as he look back at your computer screen that displays the chat.
You read the chat, everyone was cheerful and they are support your relationship together with Luca. Lucubs and your fans are so happy for both of you, "Guys.." you look at the chat in awe. "Thank you for the endless support everyone.. I appreciate you guys." You said not realizing, Luca had been staring at you from the side smiling wide at you.
"Babe we should try playing it together, do you want to?" Luca asked you, and the chat suddenly went by so fast. By that means, they want you both to play together.
. . .
It's only been 10 minutes in, and it's already a whole mess. The stream is filled with your laughter and Luca's laughter, the chat is concerned about you and him, but couldn't help but laugh too at both of your stupidity.
"LUCA-"
"HAHAHAH-"
The urge to Smack this Mafia Leader is so strong but you couldn't do so, you also loved him. And his antics.
It's already been 2 hours after you started streaming, joined by Luca in the middle of it. While you dance yourself away, there are times when Luca just sits at the back staring at you lovingly. But there's also time as he watch you dance, he teases you, tickle you, anything that made your moves falter.
But when the dance is taking a wide space, as you swing your hand following the movement, Luca made a sound. Making you laugh at the noises he made, oh how chaotic the stream was.
After 3 hours, you decided to stop playing and have a chat with your viewers with Luca. The moment you sit down, you are bombarded with questions about how did you ended up dating Luca.
"it's, a long story honestly.." You said as you look over at Luca who's laying down on the couch in your room, he look up and stared at you confused. Giving you the 'what?' look, you just shook your head and chuckled. "The thing is,
I Love Him. That's all I could say."
"I hope your fans doesn't mind me stealing their Oshi's heart."
"Lucaa.."

Getting to Know Us -- FAQs
What is Silverstring Media?
We’re a critically-acclaimed indie game studio and narrative design consultancy based in Vancouver, Canada. With a team full of unique voices, we create hopeful, imperfect worlds, and fill digital spaces with love and cosmic awe. Check out our intro post or our other links in bio :)
How long has Silverstring been active?
The studio has had many lives. It was founded by writer and transmedia designer Lucas J.W. Johnson as a solo narrative design firm. In 2013 he leveled up by partnering with Claris Cyarron, consulting on a host of award winning games and creating a series of experimental and strange altgames, including critically-acclaimed cult classic Glitchhikers: First Drive.
In 2020 Silverstring started production on its first full length in-house game, Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between. The studio grew to a team of nine passionate people, with a diversity of backgrounds, skills, and experiences to help propel the studio to create new and exciting stories that excite our audience and challenge the status quo of what games and stories can be.
What kind of games do you make?
We make people-first, story-rich, indie games. We like to push the boundaries of interactive experiences to create games that are fresh, experimental, and representative of more diverse experiences. Original music is also a key component of our projects.
While we want to tell stories that reflect the complicated world we live in and have nuanced conversations with our players, we lean into cosmic awe, community, and hope.
Along with our full length projects, Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between and Flow Weaver VR, you can check out some of our earlier short experimental projects on Itch.io.
What is Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between?
Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between is about the thoughts that you have when your mind is free to wander, everyday journeys that dominate our time but not our attention, and the parts of our world and existence normally left unexamined. Take a late night highway drive, a quiet train car in the early hours, a walk through a moonlight park, or wait in a deserted airport. Leverage the transformative power of liminal spaces and conversations with strangers.
Part walking sim, part visual novel, this chill and relaxing experience wants you to take some time and space to introspect, connect, and interrogate your own wisdom. It encourages you to be in the moment as you explore several familiar modern rituals, listen to ambient music, and receive light guidance through meandering voiceovers and questions from curious Hikers.
Where can I get your music?
You can find the Glitchhikers Deluxe Soundtrack on your favourite streaming services storefronts here. For other Silverstring Projects, check out the bandcamp of our Lead Composer Devin Vibert (along with some of his amazing personal work).
Do you have a Discord?
For now we don’t have our own Discord Server, but you can hang out with us in the Glitchhikers channel of our publisher Fellow Traveller’s server. We plan on having our own server soon though, so watch this space.
Where else can I follow you?
We plan on having Tumblr be our most active platform as we slowly divest from Twitter. You can follow us on Twitch for weekly streams with our team too. Check out our other platforms here: https://linktr.ee/slvrstrng
Can I join your team?
We aren’t hiring currently but when a position opens up we will post it here, on LinkedIn, and on our jobs page. You can also subscribe to our newsletter.

The USA has long been at the forefront of the entertainment industry, particularly in the realm of animation. With the rise of digital technologies, usa 3D animation studios in the USA have carved out a niche of extraordinary influence and creativity, setting global standards in visual effects, character design, and narrative engagement. This blog delves into the world of 3D animation in the USA, exploring the key studios, their groundbreaking work, and what makes them leaders in the digital storytelling arena.
Tumblr media
Evolution of 3D Animation in the USA
The journey of 3D animation in the USA began in the early 1990s when the first fully computer-generated feature film, Pixar's "Toy Story," revolutionized the genre. Since then, the industry has seen exponential growth, with technological advancements enabling more complex animations and more realistic visuals. Today, 3D animation is a staple in feature films, television, video games, and virtual reality, offering audiences immersive experiences that were once unimaginable.
Leading USA 3D Animation Studios
1. Pixar Animation Studios:
Located in Emeryville, California, Pixar is synonymous with 3D animation excellence. Known for its rich storytelling and pioneering software development, Pixar continues to be a leader in the industry with award-winning films like "Finding Nemo," "Up," and "Coco."
2. DreamWorks Animation:
Another titan in the industry, DreamWorks Animation has created some of the most beloved franchises, including "Shrek," "Madagascar," and "How to Train Your Dragon." Their ability to blend humor with heartwarming narratives has earned them a special place in the hearts of viewers worldwide.
3. Industrial Light & Magic (ILM):
Founded by George Lucas in 1975, ILM has played a crucial role in the development of 3D animation techniques, especially in the realm of visual effects. While known for their work on the "Star Wars" series, their contributions to the field of animation are profound, pushing the boundaries of what 3D graphics can achieve.
4. Blue Sky Studios:
Although it was closed in 2021, Blue Sky Studios was renowned for producing "Ice Age" and "Rio." Their innovative use of 3D animation technology to create endearing characters and dynamic environments has left a lasting legacy in the industry.
Innovations and Contributions
USA 3D animation studios are not just production houses; they are hubs of innovation. Many studios develop their own proprietary software to tackle unique animation challenges. For instance, Pixar's RenderMan technology has become a fundamental tool in the industry, used widely to produce photorealistic imagery efficiently.
Furthermore, these studios often collaborate with academic institutions and technology companies to research and develop new animation techniques and tools, contributing to the industry's growth and education. Such partnerships ensure the continual evolution of animation technology, keeping the USA at the cutting edge of digital arts.
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite its successes, the USA 3D animation industry faces challenges such as high production costs and intense competition from studios around the world. However, these challenges also drive innovation and creativity. There is also a significant push towards inclusivity and diversity, both in storytelling and in the workforce, which is opening new avenues for cultural narratives and creative voices.
Future Trends in 3D Animation
Looking ahead, the future of 3D animation in the USA is geared towards more realistic animations, AI integration, and immersive experiences. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are becoming increasingly significant, offering new ways for audiences to experience storytelling. Moreover, with the rise of streaming platforms, there's a growing demand for high-quality animated content, ensuring that the industry's growth remains robust.
Conclusion
USA 3D animation studios have not only defined industry standards but also continue to innovate and inspire creators around the world. They blend technology with creativity to tell stories that captivate, entertain, and enlighten, making them central to the global narrative of digital media. As technology advances, these studios are well-positioned to lead the way, exploring new realms of what animation can achieve and how stories can be told. Whether you're a film buff, a budding animator, or just a fan of good storytelling, the contributions of these studios to the world of entertainment are undeniable and are set to expand even further in the coming years.

Daily Crunch: Facebook faces VR challenges
The Daily Crunch is TechCrunch’s roundup of our biggest and most important stories. If you’d like to get this delivered to your inbox every day at around 9am Pacific, you can subscribe here.
1. Not all is predictable on Facebook’s social Horizon
Last week, Facebook unveiled Horizon, a massively multiplayer VR world that’s scheduled to launch in 2020. This might seem to play to Facebook’s software strengths, but Lucas Matney argues that the social networking giant may not actually have much of an advantage against smaller game studios.
For example, the team at Against Gravity has already built a network inside VR called Rec Room that’s been maturing over the past few years, with rich environments and toolsets for multiplayer interactions. (Extra Crunch membership required.)
2. Spotify now lets you add podcasts to playlists
Users can create their own custom playlists of their favorite podcasts, or even those that combine music and audio — similar to Spotify’s newly launched playlist “Your Daily Drive.”
3. Kickstarter darling EcoFlow Delta battery generator is not what it seems
The EcoFlow Delta is a new battery generator available on Kickstarter with incredible features claimed. Most are true, some are not.
4. YouTube TV is now available on Fire TV devices
Earlier this year, Google and Amazon reached an agreement to bring their streaming video apps to each other’s platforms. The YouTube app launched on Fire TV in July, and now Google is adding its live TV streaming service.
5. Amboss, the knowledge platform for medical professionals, scores €30M Series B
Launched in 2014 as a study platform for medical students, Amboss has since evolved to offer what it claims is the “most comprehensive and technologically-advanced” knowledge platform for medical professionals.
6. Learn everything you can about mobility at Disrupt SF
We’re bringing some of the industry’s leaders onstage at Disrupt SF — including Bird founder and CEO Travis VanderZanden, Kitty Hawk CEO Sebastian Thrun and Zoox CEO Aicha Evans.
7. This week’s TechCrunch podcasts
The latest episode of Equity kicks off with the reemergence of the much-criticized startup Bodega, which is now known as Stockwell and has raised a total of $45 million in funding. Meanwhile, Original Content reviews “Between Two Ferns: The Movie” on Netflix.

New Post has been published on https://techcrunchapp.com/biggest-game-trailers-news-and-announments-so-far/
biggest game trailers, news, and announments so far
Gamescom 2020 is happening right now, and we’re listing the best games we’ve seen so far. Stick around for an overview of every Gamescom game trailer we’ve seen so far.
This year’s event is free and streaming online to millions of fans. The show goes from August 27 to August 30. Stick around if you are looking forward to the best game trailers and announcements, and premieres. Furthermore, the last days of the event are sharing some eSports news as well.
So far, the highlight has been Ratchet & Clank: Rifts Apart, a PlayStation 5 exclusive title. Furthermore, it was the game that showed the most extended gameplay trailer. As a result, I’d say it’s the most exciting next-gen game trailer we’ve seen in a while.
Check the official Gamescom page.

Ratchet & Clank: Rifts Apart is a stand-alone aventure on a saga that already has
We continue talking about the PlayStation 5 with a new gameplay trailer. Yesterday, Sony debuted next-gen footage for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
The studio explained  Ratchet & Clank would premiere during the PS5’s “launch window.”
Insomniac Games studio showed the 5-minute-long clip at the Gamescom Opening Night Live 2020. The studio intended to show the full power of the PS5 with its Rifts Apart gameplay trailer.
We already saw the first Ratchet & Clank trailer with some gameplay on the clip. The new video extends on what we already saw, and left enough reasons to leave fans excited.
The demo showcases a glorious 3D jump & shoot platformer. It looks great, it seems fast, and it renders rich scenarios in mere seconds.
Moreover, the highlight of the game is how the characters jump from one world to another entirely different world without any load times. Going from one point to another is instantaneous. It’s a display of what the PS5 specs are capable of doing. In particular, Sony explains its custom SSD accelerates games’ load times.
For everything it showed, we claim this PS5 exclusive takes the pie as the best Gamescom 2020 trailer.

Nothing new here, just another remake of one of the best RTS games in history!
Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition brings back the classic Industrial Age strategy game to modern times. It delivers 4Kgraphics and enhanced audio. It also includes all of the original expansions.
On top of all, it includes all-new content. Most notably, the new content includes two new civilizations (Incas and Swedes).
Unsurprisingly, it also includes a bunch of quality of life improvements. In short, AoE III: Definitive Edition brings smarter AI and faster, more responsive systems.
Lastly, the most exciting part about this title is its cross-platform multiplayer feature. You can get it on either store (Steam, Microsoft, or AoE so far) and still play together with your friends.
Microsoft showed the first official teaser, and we consider it a great way to wait for Age of Empires 4.

Spellbreak is a unique Battle Royale that combines RPG elements with shooter gameplay. What sets this game apart from the competition is that, instead of shooting, you’d be wielding powerful spells against your enemies.
Even though it looks like a promising game, Gamescom 2020 was first to show the trailer. Let’s hope it catches as much attention as Fall Guys.

“A Russian boogieman”
The Cold War has never looked so realistic. The upcoming Call of Duty sets you following the trail of a Russian spy codenamed “Perseus.”
There’s still no actual gameplay footage to be seen, though. Activision has only been able to show us the setting of Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War. Moreover, the publisher is waiting until September 9 to show us how the upcoming fps plays.

Release date: 2021
Studio: Deep Silver / Fishlabs
Publisher: Deep Silver

  Check on Steam
Deep Silver and Fishlabs bring forward the classic Star Fox design to deliver a next-gen sci-fi shooter.
Chorus takes players on a quest to destroy a dark cult that created Nara, the main character. Even so, its simple setting seems enough to unlock a mind-blowing space-combat action with evolving abilities and weapons. More so, it has a sentient starship.
Star Wars Squadrons
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, Windows PC
Release date: October 2, 2020
Studio: Motive Studios
Publisher: Electronic Arts
youtube
The new Electronic Arts proposal revolves around space combat, and it looks like a total ace. Taking a look at its first trailer makes it easy to understand: Squadrons is a must-play for Star Wars fans.
It has the spirit of the classical Lucas Art saga. Moreover, the upcoming game will allow us to play as either the Empire or the Rebel Alliance. Commanding iconic starships, we’ll wage space war on a faraway galaxy.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time
Platform: PS4, Xbox One

Medal of Honor is coming back in full force with Respawn Entertainment. This time, though, it’s going to be a VR title that follows the story of one of the earliest entries of the saga.

Gamescom 2020 announcements
There’s a couple of announcements we learned at Gamescom 2020 we would like to share. These announcements include games far down the production line, though.
Furthermore, we included a couple of DLCs in this category.
Upcoming Dragon Age game
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PS5, XSX, PC
Release date: late 2020
Studio: Devolver Digital
Publisher: Mediatonic
youtube
Maybe the most significant Gamescom 2020 announcement has to do with this cult saga. BioWare showed us a behind-the-cameras of their current process. The acclaimed studio is developing the next Dragon Age game., although they haven’t shared many details.
That’s great news for fans of the RPG genre nonetheless. Let’s hope it brings the quality back to the Canadian studio after the disastrous Anthem title.
Quantum Error
Platform: PS4, PS5
Release date: TBA
Studio: TeamKill Media LLC
Publisher: TeamKill Media LLC
youtube
Quantum Error is an upcoming PS4/PS5 exclusive first-person horror title.  However, we don’t know anything else about it, so we’re going to have to wait.
Doom Eternal: Ancient Gods

Release date: November 20
Studio: iD Software
Publisher: Bethesda
youtube
Doom: Eternal – The Ancient Gods
The Doom Slayer defeated the hordes of Hell and freed Earth from the shackles of evil.
Now, Doom: Eternal is bringing its first expansion with ancient beings coming arising to the surface. We’re ready for more content on this 10/10 fps!
Destiny 2 – Beyond Light
We’re leaving the 5th DLC for the popular Destiny 2 for last. As it needs no further introduction, I’ll leave the trailer below:
youtube
Check our latest gaming news:
In Summary
I hope this short overview helps you decide whether or not to go for a next-gen console.  Because I know the PS5 and the XSX are going to be expensive, I hope the current-gen trailers are exciting enough for you.
Besides, we’ll be sure to continue our Gamescom 2020 story with further articles!

Build a 360-degree Video Player App With an Android App Template
There's no doubt that we are living in the age of VR. VR videos and 360 videos have been popular for the last few years, and there are tons of 360-degree videos all over the internet. This popularity has been brought about by the release of some VR headsets such as Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Google Daydream, PlayStation VR, e.t.c. A VR (Virtual reality)  headset is a head-mounted device that provides virtual reality for the wearer. Virtual reality headsets are widely used with video games as well as other applications such as simulations.
Users want to enjoy the immersive virtual reality experience, and you can make this possible by building a 360-degree video player.
What are 360-degree Videos?
360-degree videos are videos that offer a full 360º by 180º panoramic field of view. They let you view up, down, left, right, and all-around complete with sound and sights, thereby providing a cinematic experience.  Unlike standard videos, 360-degree videos let you view scenes from any perspective you choose.
So, in this tutorial, you are going to learn how to create a 360 video player using a template from CodeCanyon. The 360 video player will allow you to click and drag on the video and explore 360-degree videos and get a feel for what they can offer.
What is CodeCanyon?
CodeCanyon is an online marketplace that has hundreds of additional professional Android app templates and builder tools. Some of these are incredibly feature-rich and well-designed. You can sometimes save days, even months, of effort by using one of them.
Getting Started
To get started creating your Android app, you'll need to install Java and Android Studio. If this is your first Android app, you can read about how to get your computer set up in Hathibelagal's post on How to Get Started Making Android Apps.
Android SDK
How to Get Started Making Android Apps
Ashraff Hathibelagal
Get the Template and Unzip the Files
To start, download the 360 Video Player View template from CodeCanyon. You will get a link to download the files. Alternatively, you can find them in the download section of your account with your other purchased items.
Once you've downloaded the files, extract the file to a section of your computer where you can easily import them to Android Studio. You are now ready to build your Android app.
Features of the 360 Video Player View Template
This 360 player allows you to view your favorite 360-degree views and videos and gives you a better movie-watching experience. Notable features include:
ability to play and stream 360-degree videos
ability to play virtual reality videos
support for all kinds of .MP4 videos
3D viewing experience
use of device gyro sensor to navigate in the video
Import Project
To build your app, you'll need to download the project you created into Android Studio.
Extract the .zip  from CodeCanyon. Now open Android Studio and you should see a display like this:
Select the  Open an existing Android Studio Project option, browse the location where you extracted the project files, select the 360 Video Player .gradle files, and press OK. Wait a few minutes until the sync process is complete.
This would be a good time to explore the project code.
Gradle Configurations
The first important step is to change the application id.. Go to app > Gradle Scripts > build and change the applicationId to your id name, eg. com.yourdomainname.appname.
android { compileSdkVersion 23 buildToolsVersion "23.0.3" defaultConfig { applicationId "com.videoplayer.videoview360" minSdkVersion 19 targetSdkVersion 23 versionCode 1 versionName "1.0" multiDexEnabled true } }
The application identifier should be unique if you wish to publish the app to the Google Play. Sync the project and wait for a few minutes until the sync process is complete.
Change the Application Name
Go to the strings.xml file and change the application name.  Here my app name is "360 Video Player", you can change your app name to something like 360 Player.
<resources> <string name="app_name">360 Video Player</string> </resources>
Change the App Color
Another aspect you can easily change is the color pallet of the app. To change the app color, go to res > values > colors.xml and make any changes you wish to, as shown below.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <resources> <color name="colorPrimary">#3F51B5</color> <color name="colorPrimaryDark">#303F9F</color> <color name="colorAccent">#FF4081</color> </resources>
Run the App
You can now run the app on a physical device or an emulator. Connect your device to your computer with a USB cable and perform the following steps to enable USB debugging.
Go to Settings/System depending on your device
Select About phone.
Tap the Build number option seven times. The message You are now a developer should appear
Go to the settings page and tap Developer options.
In the Developer options window, enable USB debugging.
Once USB debugging is enabled, you can launch the app from Android Studio onto Your device:
On Android Studio, click Run from the toolbar.
Select the device from the drop-down menu and click OK.
Once Gradle finishes building, Android Studio should install the app on your connected device and start it.
Test the App
Finally, you can test the app.
Just open the new 360-degree app on your mobile phone. Click the OPEN GALLERY button at the bottom and choose the video you want to play from your phone. You can now explore the different ways to view your video.
Premium Android App Templates from CodeCanyon
App templates have proven to be a great way to accelerate your development project by saving both time and resources.

What to expect in digital media in 2020
As we start 2020, the media and entertainment sectors are in flux. New technologies are enabling new types of content, streaming platforms in multiple content categories are spending billions in their fight for market share and the interplay between social platforms and media is a central topic of global political debate (to put it lightly).
As TechCrunch’s media columnist, I spoke to hundreds of entrepreneurs and executives in North America and Europe last year about the shifts underway across everything from vertically-oriented video series to physics engines in games to music royalty payments. Looking toward the year ahead, here are some of the high-level changes I expect we will see in media in 2020, broken into seven categories: film & TV, gaming, visual & audio effects, social media, music, podcasts and publishing.
Film and TV
In film and television, the battle to compete with Netflix continues with more robust competition than last year. In the U.S., Disney is off to a momentous start with 10 million Disney+ subscribers upon its launch in November and some predicting it will hit 25 million by March (including those on free trials or receiving it for free via Disney’s partnership with Verizon). Bundled with its two other streaming properties, Hulu and ESPN+, Disney+ puts Disney alongside Amazon and Netflix as the Big Three.
Consumers will only pay for so many subscriptions, often one, two, or all of the Big Three (since Amazon Prime Video is included with the broader Prime membership) then a smaller service that best aligns with their personal taste and favorite show of the moment.
AT&T’s HBOMax launches in May with a $14.99/month price tag and is unlikely to break into the echelon of the Big Three, but could be a formidable second tier competitor. Alongside it will be Apple TV+. With a $4.99/month subscription, Apple’s service only includes a small number of original productions, an HBO strategy as HBO gets bundled into a larger library. CBS All Access, Showtime, and NBCUniversal’s upcoming (in April) Peacock fall in this camp as well.
Across Europe, regional media conglomerates will find success in expanding local SVOD and AVOD competitors to Netflix that launched last year — or are set to launch in the next few weeks — like BritBox in the UK, Joyn in Germany and Salto in France. Netflix’s growth in coming from outside the U.S. now so its priority is buying more international shows that will compel new demographics to subscribe.
The most interesting new development in 2020 though will be the April launch of Quibi, the $4.99/month service offering premium shows shot for mobile-first viewing that has already secured $1 billion in funding commitments and $150 million in advertising revenue. Quibi shows will be bite-size in length (less than 15 minutes) and vertically-oriented. The company has poured hundreds of millions of dollars into commissioning established names to create dozens of them. Steven Spielberg and Guillermo del Toro each have Quibi programs and NBC and CBS are creating news shows. The terms it is offering are enticing.
Quibi, which plans to release 125 pieces of content (i.e. episodes) per week and spend $470 million on marketing this year, is an all-or-nothing bet with little room to iterate if it doesn’t get it right the first time; it needs hit shows that break into mainstream pop culture to survive. Billionaire founders Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman have set expectations sky-high for the launch; expect the press to slam it in April for failing to meet those expectations and for the platform to redeem itself as a few of its shows gain traction in the months that follow.
Meanwhile, live sports remains the last hope of broadcast TV networks as all other shows go to streaming. Consumers still value watching sports in real-time. Streaming services are coming for live sports too, however, and will make progress toward that goal in 2020. Three weeks ago, DAZN secured the rights to the 2021/22 season of Germany’s Champions League, beating out broadcaster Sky which has shown the matches for the last 20 years. Amazon and YouTube continue to explore bids for sports rights while Facebook and Twitter are stepping back from their efforts. YouTube’s “YouTube TV” and Disney’s “Hulu with Live TV” will cause more consumers to cancel cable TV subscriptions in 2020 and go streaming-only.
The winners in the film & TV sector right now are top production companies. The war for streaming video dominance driving several of the world’s wealthiest companies (and individuals) to pour tens of billions of dollars into content. Large corporations own the distribution platforms here; the only “startups” to enter with strength — DAZN and Quibi — have been launched by billionaires and started with billion-dollar spending commitments. The entrepreneurial opportunity is on the content creation side — with producers creating shows not with software developers creating platforms.
Gaming
The gaming market is predicted to grow nearly 9% year-over-year from $152 billion globally in 2019 to $165 billion in 2020, according to research firm Newzoo, with more than two billion people playing games each year. Gaming is now widespread across all demographic groups. Casual mobile games are responsible for the largest portion of this (and 45% of industry revenue) but PC gaming continues to grow (+4% last year) and console gaming was the fastest growing category last year (+13%).
The big things to watch in gaming this year: cross-platform play, greater focus on social interaction in virtual worlds and the expansion of cloud gaming subscriptions.
Fortnite enticed consumers with the benefits of a cross-platform game that allows players to move between PC, mobile and console and it is setting expectations that other games do the same. Last October we saw the Call of Duty franchise come to mobile and reach a record 100 million downloads in its first week. This trend will continue and it will spread the free-to-play business model that is the norm in mobile games to many PC and console franchises in the process.
Gaming is moving to the social forefront. Many people are turning to massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) like Fortnite and PUBG to socialize, with gameplay as a secondary interest. Games are virtual worlds where players socialize, build things, and own assets much like in the real world. That results in an increasingly fluid interplay between socializing in games and in physical life, much as socializing in the virtual realms of social apps like Instagram or Twitter is now viewed as part of “real world” life.
Expect VCs to bet big on the thesis that “games are the new social networks” in 2020. Large investment firms that a year ago wrote off the category of gaming as “content bets” not fit for VC are now actively hunting for deals.
On this point, there are several startups (like Klang Games, Darewise Entertainment, Singularity 6 and Clockwork Labs) that raised millions in VC funding to create open world games that will launch (in beta at least) in 2020. These are virtual worlds where all players exist in the same instance of the world rather than being capped at 100 or so players per instance. Their visions center of digital realms where people will contribute to in-game economies, create friendships and ultimately earn income just like their “real-world” lives. Think next-gen Second Life. Expect them to take time to seed their worlds with early adopters in 2020 before any of them gain mainstream traction in 2021.
Few are as excited about social interaction in games as Facebook, it seems. Eager to own critical turf in the next paradigm shift of social media, Facebook will accelerate its gaming push this year. In late 2019, it acquired Madrid-based PlayGiga — which was working on cloud gaming and 5G technology — and the studio behind the hit VR game Beat Saber. It also secured exclusive rights to the VR versions of popular games like Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed” and “Splinter Cell” for Oculus. Horizon, its virtual world for social interaction within VR, is expected to launch this year as well.
Facebook is betting on AR/VR as the paradigm shift in consumer computing that will replace mobile; it is pouring billions into its efforts to own the hardware and infrastructure pieces which are several years of R&D away from primetime. In the meantime, the consumer shift to social interaction in virtual worlds is occurring in established formats — mobile, PC, and console — so it will work to build the bridge for consumers from that to the future.
Lastly, cloud gaming was one of last year’s biggest headlines with the launch of Google Stadia and you should expect it to be again this year. By moving games to cloud hosting, consumers can play the highest quality games from lower quality devices, greatly expanding the market of potential players. By bundling many such games into a subscription offering, Google and others hope to entice consumers to try many more games.
As TechCrunch’s Lucas Matney argued, however, cloud gaming is likely a feature for existing subscription gaming platforms — namely Playstation Now and Xbox Game Pass — more so than the basis for a new platform to differentiate. The minor latency inherent in playing a cloud-hosted game makes it unattractive to hardcore gamers (who would rather download the game). Next to Sony and Microsoft’s offerings, Stadia’s limited game selection fails to stand out. The competition will only heat up this year with the entry of Amazon. Google needs to launch the Stadia integration with YouTube and the Share State feature that it promoted in its Stadia announcement to really drive consumer interest.
