The game that I’ve worked on for 4 years is out today, and it feels surreal. Perfect Garbage grew up as a self-funded, internally driven studio headed by two QPoC writers because of this game, and I became a Narrative Designer because of it. We put a lot of heart into Love Shore, and we hope you feel that in every moment.

It's been a while since we posted on here, but you'll be hearing from us more often as we gear up for our upcoming Kickstarter for Drops of Death. Drops of Death is a mystery visual novel with a romantic twist, the killer is randomly selected from one of the four love interests, and you may unknowingly fall in love with them. Each love interest has a 25% chance of being the killer. There are 55+ different endings, meaning you could have a killer romance ending with your favorite characters!

Play as MC Adrien Lee, choose your pronouns, and decide between masculine or feminine sprite appearances.

And since there are a fair number of new people in these parts it's probably worth saying, yes, you can!

Over time I've come to realize I'm making a thematically queer game here. At first I was really hesitant to call it that - it's not a romance game, after all. It doesn't have much visibly, overtly queer content. I was scared about misleading people. But it's inherently about two people whose relationship doesn't fit inside a conventional box, who don't have an easy existing societal framework to apply to themselves, trying to navigate that situation. I think that's a universal constant of the Holmes&Watson relationship which is baked into the canon. What could be more queer than that?

The writing is deeply informed by my experience as an aromantic asexual and a platonic or queerplatonic interpretation was always my baseline (you write what you know, y'know?) , but over time I realized the joyful thing about games is that players can choose?

So yeah, ultimately you can decide that Holmes romantically loves Watson, or that he has a deep platonic love for him, or that he sees him as a brother, or that he doesn't really know how he sees him beyond knowing he wants to be with him always.

The game is mostly zany point and click antics, but that aspect is there, and I feel it's important.

Hello all! In preparation for the Steam Release, I've been making some quality of life adjustments to The Case of the Serialized Killer! Version 1.2 is mostly the same as original, but has a few changes:

Script Edits! A couple mechanics have been clarified a bit, and there have been a few bits and bobs added.

Navigation through the mansion is now done via map! This comes into play when Hawley and Harry are first exploring, and then again during the investigation section in the second half of the game,

Sound Effects have been added to the journal, and the page corners now visually highlight when you hover over them,

A few more sound effects in general have been added to the game,

The alerts when Hawley writes a note are much clearer now; the sound effect is louder, and the journal icon blinks for a moment,

Hawley's imp section has had a couple graphical edits,

Sprites auto-highlight when characters are talking,

Minor menu touch-ups,

Additional CGs! We got as much art into the original as we could, but it was somewhat lacking in the CG department. There are now four more CGs, including one in the true end!

How much of myself am I willing to give up in the name of love? was a question Enid found herself asking more and more as the confrontation between her and her ex grew nearer. A useless question to ask at this point, but one she couldn't seem to get out of her head regardless.

Don't Die Digging is a visual novel about the pains of personhood, about coming back from the dead wrong, and about how painful love can be when you give too much of yourself in its name before being ready for it.

So years back I wrote a couple chapters for a queer, feminist, indie dating game targeted at tweens/middle schoolers. The director of the game, inspired by a news story about a 12 year old who had been bullied to suicide, wanted to make something that would meet kids where they were at with stuff they were concerned about while also being actually fun. The game is called Longstory, and it's about exploring your identity and navigating the social difficulties (and absurdities) of friendship and dating in middle school.

The studio behind Longstory is running a kickstarter for the sequel at the moment. If it sounds like a project you'd like to support, check out @bloomdigital or the reblog chain for the link. If you can't kick anything in, it always helps to spread the word.

Replaying Borderlands 2 for the first time since middle school, and one thing that really sticks out to me is how progressive and ahead of its time the writing is, especially for a shooter from 2012 aimed at teenagers.

It takes place in a setting where being queer is just considered a normal part of life. One of the player characters is bisexual (which seems to be the norm for the setting), one of them is ace, and nobody makes any jokes at the expense of their sexuality. One of the main story NPCs is a sex worker, and it's never treated like an invalid line of work. There's a fat character who likes her body and is never condemned by the narrative for this; in fact, her dialogue and backstory make it clear that she's consciously defying conventional beauty standards and is much happier for it.

And as for the main villain, Handsome Jack, he is a chillingly accurate portrayal of an abusive parent; as a victim of emotional abuse in my childhood, his constant justification and blame-shifting felt all too familiar. Not to mention that his corporation, Hyperion, is explicitly colonialist, with his goal being "civilizing" the "savages" of the planet.

Even the side content has a lot of great stuff- there's a character with a stutter who's portrayed as competent and intelligent, a sidequest that deals with the gatekeeping and infantilizing women face in a lot of nerd spaces, and even a major story arc dealing with the effects of grief.

Obviously, the writing isn't perfect. There's a lot of dated 2012-era humor, but it still treats its characters with respect and its story's serious moments are given room to hit hard. It never cracks a joke in a moment meant to be serious, which is a problem later games in the series definitely have.
