Though Young Royals is primarily about imperfect teenagers, it is also about imperfect parents. It's about generational trauma and the breaking of those cycles to choose the life they want to lead. "We can't choose what lives we are born into," says Boris "but we can choose how to live our lives".
All five of the lead characters' parents have impactful stories. Micke is my favourite for how he tells Sara, (paraphrasing) "You may have inherited my diagnosis, but you are not me (so you won't end up making my mistakes)."
Whereas the Queen, Poppe, and Smysan want Wille and Felice to be just like them. Felice breaks from being who her mum wants her to be in season one. She then breaks from what her dad expects her to do (conform to the white environment and work ten times as hard to be as good) by being honest about the school he loves and stopping the conforming cycle.
August's dad was a drug addict and took his own life. There's a hope in season 3 that August has become aware of his own mental health struggles and has started to open up to a therapist. We don't see him take any drugs as coping mechanisms is season 3. Maybe he will break the cycle and overcome the trauma of his dad's death.
Simon accepts his imperfect parents. He gives his mum grace for putting up with their troubles with their dad. He wants to have a relationship with his dad and goes to him for help even though he is wary of him. But, he doesn't drink or take drugs at all, probably because his dad did. He 'deals with' and protects his sister in areas where his mum is not able to. He gives them all second chances. He accepts their failings but doesn't duplicate them in his own life. He chooses differently in his own life.
Wille's struggle is probably the hardest of them all because, as Sara says in Season 1, "Isn't that the point of the Royal Family? That they do not change." The RF's cycle of generational trauma is so rigid and long standing. There is no blueprint for what Wille is trying to do to break the cycle. Choosing not to be like his mum and his brother is monumental and unprecedented. As Simon said in season 1, "You are brave".
Some of the time in YR, we as an audience defend the teenagers for their mistakes because of their age. But the reality is, that even the adults make mistakes. Because they're human.

From what some quick searching can tell me, I think this is by Ludvík (Louis) Strimpl from the 1912 Calmann-Lévy French edition. And it's boss as hell.
Cover illustration from H. G. Wells’ The Invisible Man - 1912.

I am 21 years old and I have done art from ever since I can remember, through the mixture of philosophy, physics and many other sciences, I wish to put myself to the service of contributing for a better world. Art is my medium. Wether its a canvas, a tablet, a computer, or a paper and pen. Visual Arts and Writing are my passion, right after the passion of Learning. So I’ll be sharing here one of those sides, and hopefully you’ll want to read my stories when they are ready for the world. These stories are me, and I am them, and by them I wish to teach the story of what it is to be Human.

The Fleabag/Young Royals reference of the emotionally unavailable father in Young Royals and Fleabag. Fleabag and Young Royals spoilers ahead.
After hearing Linnéa talk about how Ludvik the Duke is a man of his generation who doesn't talk about feelings, made me think about Fleabag and Clare’s father in Fleabag. Also a man of his generation. Stunted in his emotional engagement with his kids, even though he loves them. There were some painful scenes where Fleabag really tried to reach her father, and he was just cruelly absent or dismissive of her strong emotions and 'dark side'.
Linnéa talks about how Wille and Ludvik talk past each other in their phone conversation about Erik. How the Duke thinks he's having a good conversation with Wille, but Wille is crying on the other side, sarcastically talking about a perfect Erik.
Other Fleabag references: main one is the fourth wall breaks that have such heavy meaning, especially in Fleabag season 2. She is constantly performing for us the audience. Wille is constantly being watched by the public.
The end scene where she looks at the camera and non-verbally tells us not to follow her - she'll be okay now. WIille does the same with his final look to camera.
The time that she deliberately pushes the camera away as she's finally having an intimate moment with the priest that she doesn't want us to witness. When Wille closes the curtains in Season 2, and we don't get to see anymore of his and Simon's intimate scene.
The second one is Sara telling August, "It'll pass" when he says that he loves her and can't accept that she won't take him back. Just as the priest says to Fleabag.
And third, not a reference but a casting: August's step dad and lawyer is the same actor in Season 2 of Fleabag who was Claire's (Fleabag's sister's), love interest and was also called Clare!
#Young Royals writers loved Fleabag#Fleabag had me crying nearly as much as YR#The grief in Fleabag is so big#young royals spoilers#fleabag spoilers#young royals
