The Poor Man's Morning and Evening Portions
Tumblr media
by Robert Hawker
Morning, April 11th
And Jesus said unto him, “verily I say, unto thee, today shalt thou be with me in Paradise." — Luke 23:43
My soul, hear the gracious words of thy Jesus. This was the third cry of the Redeemer on the cross. And Oh! how full of grace, rich, free, unmerited, unexpected, unlooked-for grace, to a poor lost perishing sinner, even in the very moment of death. Let. the self-righteous pharisee behold this example of redeeming love, and wonder, and be confounded. Surely no one will venture to suppose that this man’s good works were any recommendation, when the poor wretch was dying under the hands of justice. What was it then that saved him but the complete salvation of Jesus? The Son of God was offering his soul on the cross a sacrifice for sin, and being between two notorious sinners, gave a rich display of the sovereignty of his grace, and his love to poor sinners; and in confirmation, snatched this one as a brand from the burning—took him from the very jaws of hell, and that very day led him in triumph to heaven; thereby manifesting to every poor sinner, in whose heart he puts the cry for mercy, that, that cry shall never be put forth in vain. And mark, my soul, how powerful, the grace of the Lord Jesus wrought upon this man. He and his companion both knew that before night they would both be in eternity. The thought affected neither; they joined the rabble in insulting Jesus. "Save thyself and us," was the language of the heart of both, until the grace of Jesus wrought on this man’s mind, and changed the reviler into an humble suitor. What could there be in Jesus thus to affect him! Jesus hung upon the cross like a poor Jew. Jesus had been always poor, and never more so than now. And yet, in the midst of all these surrounding circumstances, such a ray of light broke in upon this man’s mind, that he saw Jesus in all his glory and power, acknowledged him for a King, when all the disciples had forsook him and fled, and prayed to be remembered by him when he came into his kingdom. Precious Lamb of God! bestow upon me such a portion of thy grace as, under all the unpromising circumstances around, may call forth the like conviction of thy power, and my need. And Oh! that this pattern of mercy might be reviewed by thousands of poor perishing dying sinners! Methinks I would have it proclaimed through all the public places of resort, through all the haunts of licentiousness, among the numberless scenes of hardened sinners who fear that they have sinned beyond the possibility of forgiveness. Oh look at this example of Jesus’s love, ye that are going down to the grave full of sin and despair! behold the thief! behold the Saviour! And Oh for a cry of grace like-that of the dying malefactor—"Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom;" and Jesus’s gracious answer—"To-day shalt thou be with me in paradise."

I. Uruk Culture Other than when Magrot arrives to the quarrel over the tree (1x03), where the other uruks seem on their toes almost as much as the humans and elves about what will happen with that water ration, some even showing surprise at Magrot´s attack (if not the attack itself, then at least the chosen timing) they all seem very well aware what is about to happen when Adar fetches Rowan from the crowd (1x05):  Without any verbal command or even gesture(x)  from Adar, Grugzûk moves, before Rowan is even on his knees to drop the dagger onto Waldreg. The way they look at that scene seems more excited and curious about how this will play out on the human´s side. There also seems to be some glee in them, especially Grugzûk, or when "Fury" and Lurka look like they are about to put their heads together for some gossip.
It seems “Only blood can bind" is something they are used to and have experience with?
II. Cinematography Can we talk about that one shot where Adar throws Waldreg to the ground? The group forms a circle around them in the middle. Mostly human Southlanders on the left, uruks on the right. When Adar throws Waldreg, the humans move back, further to the left while the uruks move in from the right keeping the circle closed. Moreover the humans are holding the torches, which means the light is retreating with them, making way for the dark to move in!
| Adar (Joseph Mawle), Waldreg (Geoff Morrell), Rowan (Ian Blackburn), Bazur (Phil Grieve), "Fury" (Luke Hawker), Lurka (Robert Strange), Grugzûk (Edward Clendon) | The Rings of Power | 01x05 “Partings” |

Image from Luke Adam Hawker's Website
Over at Xitter the algorithm served up a Xeet (did nobody vet this x-name change?) from the artist Luke Adam Hawker:
3 years well spent ✍️ 🌳 📖 I have never regretted the vast amount of time I have spent drawing trees from life, I’m confident I never will. Project - The Great Trees of London 3 years down, 6 years to go.
The Xeet includes a short video of leafing through his sketchbook. It's striking that spending time among trees is so valuable. And many of us live where there are great trees to meet.
On my drive to work there are a few great trees that I zoom by and have never taken the time for. It's complicated because these trees are by suburban houses where there are no sidewalks. However I am lucky that there are remarkable trees near me I can spend time with without impediment.
Spending time with trees is a way to become more intimate with our geography and to cultivate caring for it. Great Trees Of London is a list created in the aftermath of an extra tropical cyclone which caused death and destruction in 1987.
Many places have similar lists. Thomas Parkenham wrote a book, Meetings with Remarkable Trees. The book inspired a radio program, a factoid I like because meeting with trees is not limited to sight. There's a registry of trees in Pittsburgh called The Remarkable Trees of Pittsburgh. There are five nomination categories:
Champion Trees
Witness Trees: Trees with historical and/or cultural significance
Tree of a Kind: Trees that are unique in some way (appearance, species, special story)
Giving Tree: Trees that play a key ecosystem role
Specimen Tree: Trees with exceptional structure, health, or beauty
The replies to Hawker's Xeet were full of encounters with remarkable trees, a soft reminder that time among trees is time well spent.

Amie Donald’s M3GAN: A Breakthrough in AI that is Changing the World
1. Introduction: Amie Donald
Amie Donald, a young actress, was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on January 28, 2010. The name of her elder brother is Campbell Donald. Amie is most recognized for her roles in the Netflix TV series Sweet Tooth from 2021 and the horror film M3GAN from 2022. In the movie M3GAN, She portrayed a demonic robot doll that scared viewers while also capturing their attention.
She is a professional dancer who has competed across the globe. She competed for New Zealand at the 2019 Dance World Cup, which was held in Portugal. She was the first participant from her nation to receive medals, taking home both a silver for jazz and a bronze for Contemporary dance. Amie Donald is a dedicated dancer with the Papakura, Auckland-based Norris Studios. She is an expert in acrobatics, jazz ballet, tap dance, contemporary dance, musical theater, and hip hop dance.
2. Career
2.1 Amie Donald’s work in Sweet Tooth
She performed as three different hybrids in Season 1 and was asked to try out for Maya Monkey’s Season 2. Through the role, she has gained a lot of knowledge. She had the good fortune to learn a bit of ASL (American sign language) and perform her own stunts. She gained lots of appreciation by performing a role as a Maya monkey in Sweet Tooth.
2.2 Amie Donald’s work in M3GAN
M3GAN is a realistic artificial intelligence (AI) doll that can grow its own emotions and personality. The possible risks and advantages of AI are both explored in the movie. The critics complimented Donald’s performance in M3GAN. They remarked on her ability to express the doll’s innocent, childish quality as well as its developing self-awareness. They also applauded her for perfectly expressing both the positive and negative aspects of the doll. She has a key role in M3GAN. It’s one of the first times an AI doll has had a major part in a movie. This might open the door for additional AI-driven roles in the future.
Due to extensive media attention on Donald’s dancing and physique as the killer doll in the movie, the M3GAN trailer became extremely popular. She worked with a dialect coach to improve her American accent to ensure that it was accurate. She underwent movement training from Luke Hawker and Jed Brophy for the movie. She performed her own stunts and co-choreographed the movie’s terrifying dancing scene. Amie Donald performed the movements for M3GAN’s body while wearing an animatronic mask, while Jenna Davis voiced the deadly doll. While wearing an artificial mask, Amie Donald performed the movements for M3GAN’s body and Jenna Davis provided the lethal doll’s voice.
It was crucial for her to learn how to move and interact with the M3GAN animatronic in a way that was both realistic and believable. She spent a lot of time with film’s special effects team to act in accordance with M3GAN’s personality. She also shocked the directors by learning how to perform some challenging actions on her own, like sprinting through the woods on all fours and performing a “cobra rise” from the ground without using her arms.
3. Potential Impact of M3GAN as an AI Doll
3.1 Awareness of the potential dangers of AI
The movie examines the possibility that AI could one day surpass human intelligence and pose a number of existential dangers. This has increased conversation regarding the morality of AI development and the necessity of safeguards to stop AI from being misapplied.
3.2 Implications of AI for our Relationships with Technology
According to the movie, artificial intelligence may one day be so lifelike that it may be difficult to differentiate a machine and a human. Because of this, some have questioned whether we are prepared for a world in which AI is so all around.
3.3 Pursue careers in AI research
Some people have been influenced to think about jobs in AI research as a result of the movie’s portrayal of AI as a potent tool with the potential to change the world. New AI technologies might be created as a result, which would be advantageous for all people.
For the purpose of ensuring that AI is used for good rather than harm, we must create ethical standards for its research and application.

I don't know why I bought it since I didn't enjoy Luke Adam Hawker's last book that much, but The Last Tree had some gorgeous illustrations.
I just wish they'd had the courage to let some of the illustrations stand on their own without adding superfluous words.

The Poor Man's Evening Portion
Tumblr media
by Robert Hawker
Devotional for June 10th
And Jesus said, who touched me? When all denied, Peter, and they that were with him, said, Master, the multitude throng thee, and press thee, and sayest thou, who touched me? And Jesus said, somebody hath touched me; for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me." - Luke 8:45-46
What a most interesting passage is here! What an evidence does it afford of the clear knowledge of the Lord Jesus; and, by an undeniable conclusion from such a proof of his omniscience, what a testimony does it bring with it of the Godhead of Christ! Pause, my soul, over the portion, and mark it well. Next pass on to another sweet improvement of it, and duly consider what a beautiful distinction is here drawn between the violent pressure of the throng, and the gentle touch of faith. Multitudes crowd to churches, and they hear of Jesus; but the personal knowledge and enjoyment of the Lord Jesus, is this touching him. Oh! for grace to have this right discrimination! It is very easy to attend the means of grace, to hear or read the holy scriptures; nay, to have a clear head knowledge of divine things, and even to press after information concerning Christ; but all these may be, and perhaps often are void of that life-giving, life-imparting knowledge and enjoyment of Christ in the soul, which is really touching Christ by faith, and believing in him to the salvation of the soul. Once more, remark vet farther, the knowledge Jesus hath of all the individual cases of his afflicted people. He saw this poor woman amidst the whole crowd. He knew her case, knew all that had passed. In the greatest throng, Jesus’s eye is upon each, and upon all. He knoweth what the needy require, and what the secret sighs of his poor people express: and it is Jesus that communicates virtue, grace, strength, comfort, and help, in all their vast varieties. What a sweet thought is it then, my soul, for thee to go in the greatest throng, as well as in the most secret retirement! Jesus encourageth thy faith, bids thee come and touch the hem of his garment, and, depend upon it, as in the instance of this poor woman, however unobserved or unknown by others, his eye is upon thee for good. The language of Jesus to every one of this description is, son! daughter! "be of good cheer, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace!"
