В первой половине 90-х возникли две специфически британские разновидности брейкбита: взвинченный, изломанный и быстрый джангл и куда более заторможенный саунд группы Massive Attack, который журналисты поначалу называли "эмбиент хип-хоп". Потом сошлись на термине "трип-хоп", который прилип намертво. Люк Вайберт (он же Wagon Christ, Plug, Kerrier District) уверяет, что в 1991 году написал на своей демо-кассете два слова "trip hop" и в виду при этом ничего не имел. Кассета попала на лондонский лейбл Mo'Wax, и близкие к нему журналисты подцепили термин. Люк вовсе не настаивает на своем приоритете, наоборот, очень стесняется, что дал жизнь этому монстру. Под трип-хопом имеется в виду неспешный гипнотический грув в сочетании с депрессивным рэпом полузадушенным голосом и неуверенным девичьим пением. Как и в случае с джанглом, секрет успеха состоял в синтезе брейкбита с бас-партией, позаимствованной из даб-регги. Классики жанра - Massive Attack, Portishead, Трики. Все они, как и Люк Вайберт, разумеется, всегда отрицали, что имеют отношение к выдуманному журналистами трип-хопу. “In October of 1997 independent music label Lo Recordings received a DAT tape containing 30 different one-minute guitar pieces by New York arthouse guitarist Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth. Each piece was copied onto individual one-minute tapes and then packaged in a custom designed vacuum cleaner bag. In order to fully exploit the potential for musical/visual cross-fertilization In Recordings teamed up with leading contemporary art venture Commercial Too. One hundred bags were sent out to a selection of the most creative visual artists and musicians, inviting them to create a brand new work utilising the original piece as a starting point. The original idea was to produce a CD compilation of music together with an exhibition of visual work. However, so overwhelming was the response that the project has expanded to include a web-site, various off-shoot events and a second CD with accompanying CD-Rom to be released in the new year. Root will be launched with an exhibition in October at Chisenhale Gallery and will also form part of the Pandmmonium Festival.”
