DVDO Iscan HD, Or: To upscale or not to upscale.

Spend any time on a laserdisc related forum or facebook page, and you're bound to hear the buzzword "upscaler" or some permutation of it. It's a hotly debated topic amongst us laserdicks, and there are two main camps; those who believe in watching as intended, and those who believe in wringing every drop of potential out of what is, at the end of the day, a moderately mediocre video signal. And these two camps will go to war over their views.

Each school of thought has it's main weapon of choice. In the purist corner, the Cathode Ray Tube display, or the big boxy CRT. In the opposite end is the video processor, namely, the upscaler. Each works differently. Laserdisc is a late 70's analog technology. Yes, advancements were made in the players and mastering of discs up until roughly the new millennium. Given the age of the tech, it goes without saying that LD was designed to be viewed relatively small (back then 28inches was consider a pretty big TV) standard definition sets. And this is where camp A lies firmly. The tube tv is THE definitive, and to some, the ONLY real way to view that awesome Alien box set you bought at Suncoast Video for an obscene price in 93'.

Upscalers, such as my own DVDO Iscan HD+ (a mid 2k's model made by Anchor Bay Technologies.), usually take the SD video signal, either from a composite or S-video output on a player, and, though some magic I don't clearly understand, crank up the signal's resolution to make it more visually appealing on a display of an HD nature. They usually output though HDMI or component, though my Iscan uses DVI.

Now, for where I weigh in....I'm the rare proponent of both. They each have their merits, and each have very valid points against them. A well mastered disc on a high grade consumer CRT...if you're able to put yourself in a historical mindset, it's mind blowing to think that it was that good waaaay back when. Even today, some will give a DVD a really good run for it's money. Now, that said, when my CRT died, I had NO INTENTION OF REPLACING IT WITH ANOTHER. Why? Because good ones, such as the coveted Sony Trinitron, are becoming rarer and rarer. When you find one, it's usually possible to get it for next to nothing, if not nothing. However, by that time, I had my Iscan, which I'd gotten to make LD look good on a LED projector. With the tube out of my office and my Toshiba DLP set up in its stead, I hooked up the player and scaler, and this has been my main workhorse laserdisc rig.

Ultimately, it boils down to personal preference, and what you're willing to spend. Decent LDP's and CRT's are still cheap, upscalers, however, well, the sky is the limit in terms of price. Gear made by Faroudja, and the Lumagen and Crystalio product lines in particular command damn near absurd premiums.

I have a Lumagen video processor that I no longer have a use for. My dad is building a home theater so I want to send it to him. It is made in USA and worth about $4,000. It does not contain a battery.

What is the best way to get this thing shipped from Guangzhou to Las Vegas?

I am asking because I have never shipped anything out of China before and don't want to get any nasty surprises.

Complete Amazon Alexa Control in California Home Cinema

When a homeowner in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., hired Custom LA to replace the existing home theater in their 6,500-square-foot home, only the absolute pinnacle in audio and video equipment would do — calibrated to perfection to deliver a jaw-dropping experience. Of course, the world’s most advanced A/V components would be rendered useless if the homeowner wouldn’t be able to operate them with ease, so an intuitive control system was essential to include. Furthermore, control needed to be extended to smaller A/V systems located in two other areas of the home.

“For control, we specify RTI solutions for all our installations; they have the advanced features to handle projects of any complexity, and programming them couldn’t be easier,” says Mark Schafer, owner of Custom LA. “Furthermore, modules and additional processors can be added to easily extend control to different areas. That capability was especially important in this project, which required control in the home theater, family room, and master bedroom.”

4K Laser Projector: The Heart of the Home Theater

At the heart of the new home theater is a Sony VPL-VW5000ES 4K laser projector — projecting onto a Stewart Filmscreen LuminEsse screen — and a Datasat RS20i surround sound processor. The Sony projector was calibrated by a Dolby field applications engineer, Helmut Kaczmarek.Calibration of the surround processor was performed by Datasat’s Mike Skrzat, who has previously calibrated systems for the Oscars and numerous celebrities.

  The home theater’s video sources — including a Kaleidescape Strato 4K Movie Player, a Panasonic DMP-UB900 UHD Blu-Ray player, an Apple TV, and a DIRECTV Genie HD DVR — are passed through a Lumagen Radiance Pro video processor. Audio is powered by ATI AT4000 series amplifiers and Triad subwoofer amplifiers. House music sources include a Mark Levinson No.390 CD player and a Sonos CONNECT system; lighting is controlled through a Lutron RadioRA2 system. All components are controlled with RTI’s XP-8s control processor using IP, two-way RS-232, IR, or 12-V triggering.

  Alexa, Turn on HBO:Voice Commands Rule the Theater

From RTI’s sleek T1-B+ handheld remote control the homeowner can initiate any home theater activity or shut down the system with the touch of a button. In addition, an Alexa Voice driver from myDevices gives them the ability to control the system without touching anything at all. With voice commands, the homeowner can simply walk into the theater and say “Alexa, turn on HBO” or “Alexa, turn on movie lighting.” Alexa can even be used to switch between the calibrated projector settings for 4K HDR content and HD SDR content. Furthermore, the T1-B+ has a companion mode, so when a voice control command is issued, the controller automatically syncs to the correct activity page.

Extending A/V Control to the Family Room and Master Bedroom

In the home’s family room, Custom LA utilized RTI’s PCM-4 port control module to expand the capabilities of the XP-8s, providing IR and IP control over components including a Samsung 55” LED TV, Samsung UBD-K8500 UHD DVD player, Marantz SR5011 surround receiver, DIRECTV Genie Mini, and Apple TV. In the master bedroom, RTI’s XP-3 control processor is used to provide IR and IP control over a Samsung 49” LED TV, Sherwood surround receiver, and DIRECTV Genie Mini. In both spaces, the client interacts with the system using a T1-B+ handheld controller. In the future, voice control will be expanded to these rooms.

  Dolby Atmos, Alexa, and 4K a Winning Entertainment Trifecta

“When I went into the theater for the first time, just to experience the Dolby Atmos demo disc, I was completely blown away,” says Schafer. “It’s hard to explain how good sound can be when it’s coming through the right equipment, and it was amazing to see the projector — with its 5000 lumens and incredible color volume — playing 4K HDR content. The homeowner couldn’t be happier with their home theater and the ease of control they have over this sophisticated equipment, especially the Alexa voice control. It’s an amazing capability that we can’t wait to incorporate throughout the rest of the installation.”
