The thunderstorm envelops the cityscape in a blanket of rain. You have a thick comforter wrapped tightly around you, sniffling from a stuffy nose. Too tired, too ill, you listen to the endless drums of droplets tapping and running down the glass window. Tap. Tap tap tap. The room is so chilly; you shudder, trying to pull the comforter as close to you as possible. The glass next to your bed is empty—been empty, but the few steps to the kitchen seem like a perilous journey.

Maybe it'll be better to just sleep it off, yea, sleep...sleep. But it's too hard.

The room is quiet, only inhabited by you. If only Daishou is around, you miss him. You feel around the bed for your phone, but even after patting around, again and again, all you touch is the mattress and no device.

Rain continues to race down the windows. Tap tap tap. It's too loud and jarring to be the rain, like an awkward beat that's out of rhythm.

You manage to pull yourself up a bit to press your face against the icy cold glass and squint, peering into the darkness for a sign. Your eyes spot another pair of eyes, two floors down on the ground level. A smile cracks on your tired face seeing Daishou, peeking out from under his huge, obnoxious umbrella waving frantically at you, trying to signal to you, I'm coming up, open the door.

It's as though seeing him lifts all stress and struggles from your shoulders. You roll yourself out of bed, the comforter is still wrapped around you, half of it trailing on the floor like some royal cape. Meanwhile, Daishou circles the small apartment complex and arrives at the door just in time for you to open it.

He comes in, shoes squeaking and soaked from the rain. How come you're here? You want to ask but he beats you to the question.

"How are you feeling?"

"Good," you respond automatically without a passing thought.

"Lies," he mutters, setting a bag on the table, "bet you feel awful."

Daishou's sometimes sharp-tongued and part of it really comes through in just how well he knows you. He just knows when you dismiss things or stay stuff out of habit rather than honesty. "Heh, yea."

You take a seat on the edge of the couch, watching him quickly clean out the kitchen sink you're too tired to take care of. Dishes rinsed and into the washer, countertops wiped...Daishou dumps out the water in the kettle and refills it, pressing the tab down to boil before coming over to you. He kneels down to your level and puts a hand across your forehead before feeling his own.

Daishou does this back and forth twice, thoroughly focused, commenting to himself, "feels quite warm, probably a fever...hmm". He doesn't notice your eyes studying his scrunched-up face until you press a finger to the middle of his brows, smoothing out the creases forming there.

You find it kind of cute how serious he can get when it's about you. "You'll get wrinkles there."

He envelops your hand with his own, running a soothing thumb across your skin. "All because I'm so worried. You didn't pick up your phone all day."

"Ah, speaking of that, I was looking for it just earlier..."

"Maybe it's a good thing, you're so busy all the time. Your phone's hiding to give you a break," he takes a seat on the couch next to you, pulling you onto his lap so he can tightly hold you close, blankets and all. "No matter how busy or stressful work gets...don't forget to take care of yourself first."

"Okay, I'll try," you murmur. "Suguru?"

"Hm?"

You snuggle closer to him, "Miss you."

"Me too baby. I-"

Hearing the kettle boil, you scooch over a bit to let Daishou go, albeit a bit reluctantly.

"I'll be right back," he tells you, pressing a kiss to the top of your head. He knows.

A moment later, Daishou comes back with a mug and some cold medicine...and your phone. You look at the phone weirdly and prepare to ask where he found it.

"Believe it or not, in the drawer with all the kitchen utensils."

"..."

"Weird I know. Wouldn't be surprised if I found it in the freezer instead."

You let out a little snort that he finds adorable. He’s just glad that you’re still finding it amusing; at the very least you still have some energy to laugh at him.

Daishou watches you take the cold medicine and sip on the warm drink he made. It's not the cold medicine that makes you feel better, you want to reason, it's him. Just him. Especially now with his arms wrapped around you once again.

"Sleep now, you'll feel a lot better afterward."

"What about you?" You can feel your lids becoming heavier, lulled by the droning sounds of the storm outside and the wave-like rhythm from Daishou's breaths.

"I'm not going anywhere."

You smile, fully relaxed and content, the atmosphere cozier than ever.

"What if...you get...sick-bug from me?" you mumble quietly, drawn away into a dreamy haze.

The last thing you remember is the impression of his chest rumbling slightly from a quiet laugh. He whispers, so gently and faintly, "Then you take care of me."

When you're down, I'll be there for you. When I'm not feeling well, you'll be there for me. We'll take care of each other.

AU: Two Wild Halves

Notes: Another skip around the timeline of my Two Wild Halves Verse because all of my inspiration is here. It was last night’s briefly posted fic but dressed up much, much nicer than before. If I was happy with last night’s I am positively radiant over the improvement.

Summary: Solus finally has the tough conversation and confirms what everyone knows.

"How long did you plan on keeping that secret?" her new Manda'lor asked as he stepped out onto the small balcony.

The entire purpose standing out in the bitter cold had been to remain alone. Without orders or good reasoning, no one would come outside just because. Coupled with the tiny celebration of their latest victory-formally possessing Krownest-staying alone should have been guaranteed. Humans were not built to find comfort in the snow. Even the year around residents of the planet still needed protection from the elements, unlike her. Yet, Pre had materialized out of thing air to initiate the hardest conversation of her life. Vizslas were always causing problems.

Solus sighed to herself before pushing up from leaning on the banister. Turning to properly face him she kept her eyes focused just over his shoulder, “As long as it would have kept itself.” By her estimations, back with lengthy holonet searches, she anywhere from another month to almost six. Hybrids rarely followed a set standard according to a multitude of peer reviewed scientists.

He nodded before stepping deep into her personal space, near enough to touch yet refraining. The blond’s voice dropped low, “How far along?”

Outwardly, he looked untroubled but something was going on beneath. A building panic, if she was to guess without the Force, brought on as the puzzle came together. Several short glances to her mid-section offered nothing beyond a teasing not that far. At best, he was made aware her weapons had been returned. His next source of knowledge would be the previous month. Smooth tracts of skin laid bare with muscle but no curves building to support a child.

Long ears twitched in the against the wind as Solus found a petty enjoyment to his turmoil. The better part of the last week had been spent facing the same panic alone. When she had broke to seek comfort her full plans had to remain hidden. Her friends would have stopped her. Calling on a past promise they could stomach. Her people were communal after all. But, to sell herself like this? They would have been duty bound to stop her.

Storm gray eyes locked with piercing blue ones, “About five weeks, Sir.” Maintaining such intense eye contact left the long column of her throat bare to him. A coaxed gesture of submission but one all the same. “The healer who informed me was thorough in his assessment.”

A quick kaleidoscope of emotions shifted over his face. Blond brows knitted together as he ran the math. They rose at first realization before his eyes widened at confirmation. Allowing for minuscule calculation errors and bodily quirks the date still fell within range of Concordia. He tried to sweep it all away in place of another neutral expression. A noble attempt but it did nothing to fool her.

“And the father?” came out whisper quiet. A formality more than a true question. Both knew the answer.

Solus offered him a hollow smile with pointed canines proudly on display against her lips. “You already know.”

Everything froze in the moment. His breath no longer curled from his mouth in puffs of white smoke. Snow flurries ceased to fall then melt against them. The blustery wind died to nothing while her heart stilled. All that stretched between them was this shared knowledge; another set of roles intertwining their fates even together. 

Pre broke the silence, “Are you certain?” His gloved hand came to rest on her shoulder while his stare bore into her with unfathomable intensity. It sent a trill up her spine. “Are you absolutely certain?”

To an uneducated outsider it could have read as concern. She was after all, his newest warrior, and he was her Manda’lor. His forces would only be as strong as his most vulnerable and she was vulnerable. It was natural for him to worry after her. But, she knew better. The unspoken threat loomed over her at what would happen if she was lying. Pre Vizsla was not a man to be played as easily as a foolish senator or even a distracted Jedi. He was someone possessing every bit the cunning, intelligence, and danger that she did. More so, if she swallowed her pride to admit it. His job against the Duchess would become the thing of legends.

“Yes. I am certain.” Ears pinned back she drew herself to her full height. The defiant tilt of her chin daring him to go for her throat. He was her Mand’lor now but she was no pushover. “There is not other male it could be.”

“Your current plan of action?” Pre asked not ceding ground per say but granting her some say in the matter. To have her autonomy acknowledged unexpectedly pleased Solus. He was firm, exacting even, judging by his swift execution of a warrior for failure but not unwilling to see reason. All admirable traits compared to the impetuous, shortsighted, childish politicians she had wrangled before. Pre wanted a legacy with his name ringing on for centuries.

“I am prepared to admit the truth or lie on your orders. I...I do want to keep my child and heir.” Left unsaid was that tiny pinprick of Force growing within her motivated everything. For herself, she would bide her time and wait for the right opening. For her child? They would never know what shackled her as long as she drew breath. “However, my will is that of my Manda’lor’s.”

Minutes stretched on as she watched him carefully decide his answer without dropping his hand. Pinned in place Solus snuck several short looks at his face. Their time apart had not been kind to him, with or without her help. Beneath the rosy color of his probably stinging face a gash stood out.  Having just missed his left eye it trailed down before crossing over his cheek. As it was, stitches held it together but she could better. A touch of Force healing would not prevent the scarring at this point but it could lessen the irritation. The biggest challenge became how to extend her offer.

“For now, stay quiet on the child’s parentage,” he ordered, again breaking the silence. “But do see a medic. You both have to stay healthy.”

Something in the Force shifted with that sentiment. In her mind, Solus could see it as a pebble being cast into a still pond. The simple concern for her and her child would alter things. What she would not give in that moment to have Lumi’s cursed gift with shatterpoints to try and understand better. Instead, she was left to guess at what happened. A Death Watch raised, future chieftain would be of use especially with if they inherited her Force Sensitivity.  

A curt nod acknowledged her orders. Preparing to asked him about healing his face she was instead cut off with, “Who else knows?”

Head tilting to the side she looked at him in thorough confusion. “Only Ursa?” Was it not her friend who told him of the news? No one else would have heard a single word from her. Even her devices had been wiped clean of any reference to a pregnancy in preperation for the inevitable search. “It was an educated guess on her behalf that I confirmed but did not elaborate upon.”

Pre looked down at her with the ghost of smile playing across his regrettably handsome features. He knew something she did not; much his immense pleasure. Biting the inside of her lip she stuffed back her questions of how. Their games had shifted to favor him. Therefore, she would stop giving him reactions to encourage his smugness.

“Go back inside. People have noticed your absence, Chieftain, and this victory was brought in part by your contributions.” His hand shifted from her shoulder to the center of her shoulder blades to push her toward the door. “Celebrate it.”

In last hint of teasing, not unlike the man who captivated her on Concordia, Pre whispered into her ear, “It was the strill that ratted you out.” Solus shivered at the warmth of his breath against her sensitive ear. Glaring to the side she forced down her reaction. He played dirty. “Pay better attention.”
