That’s Our Coach!

🏒So some of us on the SW discord were talking about Remus now that the final chapter of SW had come out. And we came up with the headcanon idea that Remus had figured out a way to continue his summer coaching despite now being spoiler alert if you haven’t read it (but why would you be here if you hadn’t? GO READ THE FINAL CHAPTER!!) the newest player of the Gryffindor Lions. Naturally, I got inspired and thus had to write this fic. Honestly this is the longest work I’ve done in a while and I am so excited to finally be posting it.

Course, credit is due. This wasn’t just my idea. Thank you so much to @whataboutmyfries, @im-oknutzy-trash, @bkfstclubmember and @fadedgreenmittens for coming up with the details for this idea! I couldn’t have done this without you four!

Just a heads up, despite being an ice skater and knowing hockey terms, I have never ever written hockey before. So I apologise profusely if something doesn’t seem correct. As always, full credit goes to @lumosinlove for her amazing characters!

One Month Ago

Remus stopped at the boards smoothly, letting some of the ice spray as he hopped onto the boards of the bench. “Great practice everyone.” He exclaims with a smile, “Boys can you come over here for a moment?”

Fifteen boys, ranging from ages eight to ten skated quickly over to their coach, sliding into a halting stop - some less graceful than others which causes Remus to chuckle lightly under his breath before addressing the boys.

“Now boys, this is the end of our summer session. The next season is going to be a little different.” He explains calmly, trying to get a handle of his nerves yet excitement for what the Cubs’ reactions will be.

Naturally, this caused a chorus of assumptions all ranging from horribly bad to hilarious.

“Are you leaving?” One boy, the loudest despite being the youngest exclaimed tearfully, and this caused a collective gasp before a chorus of the same comments. “Don’t leave Coach Remus!” “Yeah! You’re the best!” “Stay with us!”

“Calm down, calm down. Don’t worry, it’s nothing like that.” Remus repeats a few times before the attention is back on his words, “I’m going to be playing for the Lions.” He finally announces with a smile, “And I’m inviting you guys to the first game at Hogwarts Stadium.”

He watches as his words resonate in each of the kid’s minds as they all collectively gasp, once again, with wide eyes and erupt into cheers. Most likely the smartest decision for him to currently have been seated upon the boards of the bench or else he might’ve been tackled to the ice by the Cubs.

Smiling, he watches as the boys skate off the ice and rush over to their parents, yelling “COACH REMUS IS ON THE LIONS!!!”

Present-Day

The locker room was buzzing with excitement and it seemed to emanate through every player. Leo and Logan were somewhat geared up already, making some sort of competition out of a play fight by tasing the other’s side with their fingers.

It was interrupted by Finn who came sprinting from his stall and jumped onto Leo, and Logan broke down laughing at the sight. Kasey was on the floor of his stall, in the midst of stretching out his legs in the splits while he was in a three-way conversation with James and Talker.

James sat leaning forward as he was lasing up his skates, and Talker was drumming on the walls of James’ stall as he sat somewhat in the middle of the room. Meanwhile, Olli, Kuny and Nado were also set in a pretty energetic conversation in full gear. Dumo sat watching the boys with Sergei by his side, and finally, Remus and Sirius were the last ones to enter the room to get geared up.

Remus stopped for a moment, staring at the stall that was now his. Lupin #6 was written on the back of the brand new Lions jersey. It felt so surreal, yet, strange. Normally he’d be here early in the morning, setting up all the stalls exactly the way each team member preferred in order to not mess with superstitions.

But now, here he was. Coming at the same time as the others, with Sirius by his side. He made it. And yes, he loved his job as a PT, and in some ways will miss it - he cannot deny the excitement that fueled the spring in his step. The urge and want to prove himself was here once again.

He sent Sirius a smile before they part to their stalls. On reflex, he sat at his stall and fell easily back into his old routine for stretches, calf stretches before thigh, and then when he felt ready he began gearing up.

“Mon Loup, are you nervous?” A familiar voice says by his side, as Remus was beginning to lace up his skates. He looks up to see Sirius in just his under armor, as always before games, leaning against his stall and he cannot help but smile in return despite his nerves.

“A bit more now that we’re actually here. But I’m excited.” He admits. Spotting the paper in his fiance’s hands, his eyes widen ever so slightly. This was really happening, he’s here. He’s on the Lions about to play his first game with his love and family by his side.

It still felt so new yet so right to call Sirius his fiancé, everytime the reminder comes to his mind he has to smile. He was just so happy. “Is that the starting line-up for the game?”

Sirius nods, giving him a fond smile in return. Most likely assuming what was on his mind before he asked the question. However, there was some mischief, and pride within his eyes, he most likely read the lineup already. “Wanna join me for the read off?”

“Absolutely.”

The couple makes their way to the center of the locker, in the midst of the chaos, and Sirius lets out a loud whistle before yelling, “Alright! First game of the season! Let’s kick the Habs’ asses tonight yeah?” That caught the attention of the team, as a series of answering shouts of approval, all of which amplified when the team caught sight of Remus in his jersey.

“Let’s go Loops! Rookie up!” Finn yells, laughing as he rushes forward and gives Remus a high five.

“Coach gave the line-up for tonight’s game.” Sirius continued over the noise. He looks to Remus with a smile before he turns to the team and starts off the line-up, “Starting tonight, in the cage, we got Kasey Winter!”

Remus leans over at the paper with a grin on his face as he takes Sirius’ hand as he decides to steal the next call, “On the left, we got James Potty-Mouth Potter himself.”

“On the right, we got the fastest on our side - Remus Lupin!”

“Loops on the ice!” Logan calls out, forming a chant followed by James, Talker, Finn, and Leo. Remus couldn’t help but laugh at the antics, this was really happening. In an effort to drown out the series of chants, he takes the next announcement.

“We got Talker and Olli on defense!”

James, in his excitement, quickly stole the paper from Sirius’ grasp, yelling above his protests, “And of course on center, we’re making the power front line here. We got the man, the myth, the legend - Sirius Black!”

A chorus of cheers rang out for those announced in the lineup, progressively dying down as Coach Arthur came into the locker room, and then it was really business time. The last of the gear and jerseys were finally dawned, laces were laced up, and the team was getting into the right headspace for a game.

Remus stood at the end of the tunnel with Sirius by his side. “Gryffindor!” boomed Frank’s voice, which echoed down the tunnel in addition to the crowd’s loud cheers in response, full of excitement for the Lion’s entrance. “Are you ready?”

Ten... Nine...

“Re? You okay?” Sirius asks, placing a gentle hand upon his own, that was tightly gripping the pole of his hockey stick. He gasps lightly as he lets his grip slacken, not realizing that his nerves had increased since entering the tunnel.

Eight... Seven...

“I’m... okay. Just nervous.” Remus replies honestly, trying to give a reassuring smile at the concerned look upon Sirius’ face. Taking Remus’ opposing hand in his own, he runs his thumb comfortingly across the top and squeezes it lightly. “Breathe Remus, you’ll be okay. You’re not alone out there.” He says, as they walk hand in hand down the tunnel.

Six... Five.....

“Right... Breathe. Just Breathe.” He repeats over and over momentarily, getting himself out of his head. “It’s just the first game.” He sees Sirius nod, out of the corner of his eye.

“You’ll be okay. And you’ll play so well.”

Four... Three...

The camera crew within the tunnels, displaying the entrance on the jumbo screen within the stadium begin rolling the cameras as the team gets closer. Distracted, Remus gasps as he’s suddenly pulled back from following the team and pulled flush against a familiar chest.

“What is it?” He asks, looking up at Sirius with a slight tilt of his head in confusion.

It was strange, Sirius’ eyes were shining bright as he looked back at Remus. Probably trying to gauge how nervous he actually was at the moment he assumes. “Hey, Re?”

“Yeah?”

Sirius glances briefly to the cameras that were now focused on them since they were the last two remaining, before he tilts Remus’ helmet upwards slightly, and kisses him softly. As if they have all the time in the world.

Two... One...

As they pull away, he briefly lets go of Remus’ hand, only to gently place it on his cheek. “I love you. So much.” Sirius comments with a smile.

Remus can’t help but smile in return, leaning into the touch, feeling his nerves wash away as he looks into the eyes of the man he loves. “I love you too.”

Zero...

“Your Gryffindor Lions!” Frank drew out the words and the lights within the stadium went crazy as the team appeared down the tunnel. The order was the same as usual, Kasey came first, goalie mask propped on top of his head as he skated out onto the ice.

Then Timmy, Finn, Leo, Olli, Logan, Evgeni, Nado, Sergei, Dumo. The only difference was that James came out right before Remus, who was now second to last, and it was his turn.

It was exhilarating, hearing the cheers as Frank called his name and he skated onto the ice, right foot first. It was smooth beneath his blades, bringing him to a sense of calm focus.

There was a sea of red and gold throughout the stadium, in addition to rainbow flags, his nickname was being shouted by multiple fans and as he skated to a section, there was a chorus of a different nickname being yelled which made him laugh. “COACH REMUS!”

Stopping at the glass he waves and pounds on the glass in return to some of the boys close up to the boards. “Hi boys! Enjoy the game!” He yells up, not fully expecting to be heard but nonetheless felt the need to.

When he turns to skate off and find Jules in the stands, Finn skates by, looking at him with wide eyes. “Loops, you have a lot of children?”

“What?” He responds in confusion, turning back behind him to the team before looking back to Finn. “Oh… No. Finn, that's my cub’s team from summer.” He says, laughing.

“Gotcha. Hey, let them back after the game!” Finn says with a smile before continuing the loop around the rink, while Remus takes off once again, reaching close to the middle of the rink before he goes back to the glass, stopping in front of where his family has a front view.

Smiling, he watches as Julian rushes from his seat to the glass with the biggest smile on his face. Julian had his Lions beanie on as usual but for once, he wasn’t dressed in a Black jersey.

Instead, he wore the Lupin jersey that he had just gotten a few days prior, turning around briefly to show his older brother. The brothers place a hand on the glass on both sides, smiling at the other as they mouth to one another.

I love you Re!! Good Luck!!

Love you too Jules!

With a quick wave up to his parents in the stands, Remus took off once again, passing by his fiancé who was already at center ice with the ref who held the puck and the Habs’ center. Stopping at the boards, he was met by James who smiled at him.

Rolling his eyes, he quickly grabbed the gatorade blue he had put on the bench prior next to two bottles of water, not wanting to mess with his friend’s superstition despite him not needing to be in charge of it anymore. He flips the bottle towards him, earning a grin in response, “Blue.”

“Always blue.” He replies with a wink before he skates off to his position on the right. Sharing a look with Sirius, he smiles before looking to the Habs’ right winger in front of him. James joined them shortly after, and the six crouched, eyes on the puck. The ref dropped the puck shortly after, and the game began.

The first period went by in a flash. With the Lions being up 1-0. James narrowly managed to score a breakaway up the ice off of a clean pass from Remus and managed to break through the Habs’ goalie. However, the Habs’ defense was strong. The Lions needed to be at the top of their game.

In the midst of the second period, the Habs managed to tie the game 1-1. So, Remus decides to push a little harder. Puck in hand, he races through the defensive line of the Habs and manages to score. With a hat trick.

His hands up in a cheer and laughing to himself, he was suddenly slammed into the boards by Sirius and James, and there was a loud chorus of young shouts yelling “THAT’S OUR COACH!” that made the three players laugh.

In the stands, there was no one more excited than Julian, who was practically jumping up and down as if he was on a sugar high. The nine-year-old wasn’t even playing himself yet he felt adrenaline for his older brother. He was just so happy!

“Yeah Loops! You’re on fire today!” James says on his right, smacking his shoulder playfully as he pulls away, heading off to the Lions goal to give Kasey a high five, then heading off to Olli and Talker.

Sirius stayed behind, having the biggest grin as he watched Remus laugh with glee, kissing his cheek briefly before he speaks. “You got a hat trick!”

“I did!”

Remus is freed from the board, however, his laughter and excitement has not diminished in the slightest. Joining James and Sirius back at center, the second period continues.

Thank you so much for coming this far. I don’t usually like to put author's notes at the end of my works but this is an exception. And I have to admit, this one-shot took me a lot longer than I initially thought but I adore it so much.

Now, I have a question for you all.

I’m thinking of writing a second part to this (and possibly more than just another in the future), and making Lions Player/Coach Remus a regular au on my blog. What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments, a reblog with your answer or shoot me an ask with what you think!🏒

What was your favorite TV show growing up? Do you still watch it?

I feel like I should preface this by saying the following: I didn’t have cable TV in my house until I was 14 or 15 years old. So that may alter what I can comment on this, at least in terms of what I watched routinely.

Mostly though, what I had access to as a kid was PBS and Disney’s One Saturday Morning (and a few WB cartoons, like Animaniacs). What I remember watching most often though? Wishbone, Reading Rainbow, Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?, The Simpsons, Star Trek: The Next Generation, ER, and Masterpiece Theatre (Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy? chef’s kiss). Wishbone was entirely due to the literary focus and I liked to challenge myself to beat the kid contestant kids on the geography questions on Carmen Sandiego. The other three were either out of coincidence, that they happened to always be on, or the fact that my parents were really into Star Trek and ER.

Cable was a treat though, mostly when I went to relatives’ or friends’ houses, or on vacation. It was then I could see the Holy Grail (at the time): Nickelodeon. Sure, you had your Cartoon Network Cartoon Cartoons, with your Dexter’s Lab and Powerpuff Girls (this may have been a little later than my childhood, actually) and Johnny Bravo...but Nickelodeon?

Nick was gold. It was the coolest channel on TV for elementary school-aged me.

Doug, Rugrats, Rocko’s Modern Life, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, All That, Legends of the Hidden Temple, GUTS...yeah. I loved all of those when I was able to watch them. AYAotD, Doug, and Legends were my favorites, though. And I managed to visit Universal while the Nickelodeon Studios were still open and the slime geyser was still going. It was beautiful.

Anyone else remember the time capsule?

As a teen, I finally went back and rewatched stuff I missed, like Daria, but I was mostly watching anime at that point. By the time I got to college though, I finally got into The O.C., Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gossip Girl, Supernatural, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, etc. in my late teens/early 20s. I’m not sure how Dawson’s Creek, One Tree Hill, and Vampire Diaries passed me by, but they did.

As for a selection of my lineup of must-watch TV:

- So. Many. Historical. Dramas: Downton Abbey, The Great, Bridgerton, Sanditon, Victoria, Poldark, Endeavour, Grantchester, Outlander, A Discovery of Witches, Mad Men, The Gilded Age, Miss Scarlet and the Duke...etc.

- Actually just a lot of British TV in general. Just...just throw Britcoms, mysteries, and dramas at me. And while not strictly a British-made show, can E!’s The Royals come back? That final season cliffhanger was BS. Despite the creator being full of shit, The IT Crowd was great. Also: The Inbetweeners, Skins.

- Netflix selections like: Stranger Things, Lupin, Big Mouth, Elite, Squid Game, most things by Mike Flanagan that don’t have dead cats in them (I’m looking at you, Hill House. Screw you, Hill House). I still need to watch Money Heist.

- Anime like: Lupin III Part 6, Spy x Family (alongside a whole list of favorites)

- Disney+ like: Ms. Marvel, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and soon....SHE-HULK. I’ve been waiting for MCU She-Hulk since the first Avengers movie, pretty much. She’s my favorite superhero. I am VERY EXCITE.

- Others: American Horror Story, Riverdale (though I stopped watching this season), Pretty Little Liars, Dollface, Shrill, Sex and the City (some episodes are better than others), Peacemaker, and I’m rewatching The Sopranos. Still need to start the TV version of The Time-Traveler’s Wife (the book is a favorite of mine. The movie was terrible) and finish up Succession and Euphoria.

How many languages do you speak?

Fluently? One. English, of course. But I’ve got a decent grasp on French, at least enough to get around: I studied the language between ages 8 and 22, though if I don’t use it frequently it’s harder to keep up with it. I also studied some Latin and Japanese.

Fiancé is fluent in English and Italian, and knows some Spanish and German. This makes our planned trips to Europe much easier!

The Toonami Trending Rundown for September 18-19, 2021. As summer comes to an end, things are heating up as we’re past the halfway point for Fena: Pirate Princess, while My Hero Academia begins the “My Villain Academia” arc, among other great moments.

On Twitter, #Toonami trended in the United States on Twitter alongside Adult Swim and five of the block’s eight shows: Fena Pirate Princess, My Hero Academia, Yashahime, Food Wars, and Black Clover. Fena’s buzz also led to a character trending for the first time with Yukimaru, as he chased after Abel to rescue Fena from him. Meanwhile on Tumblr, #Toonami also trended. The full list, including statistics and tweet counts from the Twitter app, can be seen below.

This week’s feature was a video game review of ALBA: A Wildlife Adventure. It received an 8.0 out of 10 score.

An hour before Toonami’s broadcast, Adult Swim aired an episode of Family Guy for the final time as the show’s cable and streaming rights were transferred to Disney-owned networks and streaming platforms due in part to the Disney-FOX merger. Following the broadcast, TOM and SARA joined characters from Adult Swim’s original programming in a bumper waving farewell to the program. Despite that Family Guy’s critical acclaim among long-time fans has dropped in recent years, alongside concerns that the block was becoming too over-reliant on the show for ratings and filling timeslots, watching Adult Swim help revive the show played a tremendous role on shaping what the network is today, and I think I can speak for many of Adult Swim and Cartoon Network’s viewers that things won’t be the same without the Griffins on the lineup. Thanks for the memories.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Lupin the 3rd Franchise, Sentai Filmworks and TMS Entertainment will be hosting a limited theatrical run featuring the dub premiere of Lupin the Third Part 1, Episode 1, alongside the first two subtitled episodes of Lupin the Third Part 6. This theatrical event will take place in select theaters from October 22-28, 2021. If you’re interested, click here to check out a list of viewings near your area.

Ufotable and Aniplex has announced today that Demon Slayer's second season will begin on October 10 with a 7 Episode TV recap of Mugen Train, before beginning the highly anticipated Entertainment District Arc on December 5th. Both Crunchyroll and Funimation have announced that they will simulcast the new season, as they have done with the previous one. It has yet to be announced if and when Toonami will renew the series once the dub is ready, but this is potentially good news for those worried about Toonami viewers getting shut out from the Mugen Trainstoryline when/if Demon Slayer returns. If you missed it, I previously discussed this looming problem in further detail in my editorial: “Is Toonami’s “No Movies” Policy Coming Back to Haunt Its Viewers?” Of course, Toonami fans may not be completely out of the woods yet in this regard, given that the first installment of Sword Art Online: Progressive, titled Aria of a Starless Night will be a feature film. If you remember back in 2018, Toonami deferred from airing Sword Art Online: Oridinal Scale when the show returned for Project Alicizaiton, which unfortunately had ramifications in the long run as Ordinal Scale introduced elements and plot lines to the storyline that ultimately left Toonami fans completely out of the loop. Depending on what Reki Kawahara, A1 Pictures, and Aniplex’s long-term plans are for Progressive, Toonami viewers could potentially be in for a rude awakening if Progressive has a similar plan to what was done with Ordinal Scale, rather the “Dragon Ball Super-esque” route Demon Slayer has taken regarding Mugen Train.

Following the season finale of My Hero Academia in Japan, it has been announced that there a sixth season of the My Hero Academia franchise is already in production. Toonami aired Episode 108 (Episode 20 of Season 5) this past Saturday, so starting tonight, we have five more episodes left before Toonami viewers reach that point.

Finally, Production IG released a new key visual for Fena: Pirate Princess, to coincide with the Japanese premiere of the show on October 2nd. You can check it out below.

Fake Laughs and French Fish

"You laughed in a restaurant but you have a really ugly laugh so I thought you were choking" au. The opposite of a meet cute bc James is an idiot. idk what this is but Happy Jilytober!

It was James’s least favorite kind of restaurant. The kind of place where sure, the food is good, but the portion is barely big enough for a snack and the music was too soft and the tablecloths were too stiff and there were too many types of forks that he didn’t know which was meant for salad and which was for stabbing into his thigh.

All places should have prices on the menu, smarmy little French places were not an exception. But Peter’s birthday had been last week and James had missed the party to deal with a work emergency so he owed him dinner at Peter’s choice of restaurant. And of course, Peter had to pick the most pretentious place in the city.

Sirius and Remus were there as well, of course, they could hardly go anywhere without them. It was exactly the kind of place Sirius grew up in, and although he had gotten very comfortable with fast food since he was exiled by his family, he still seemed to fit in perfectly at this kind of place.

As much as James loathed the whole joint, he grudgingly admitted it was worth the hefty bill to watch Peter’s whole face alight with joy as they sat down. His head was on a swivel, swooshing from side to side, tittering with excitement.

Just as the young waiter brought their appetizers over, a mushroom risotto and salmon tartare, Remus was in the middle of thanking him and requesting more water when a large man at the table behind them snapping his fingers, head turned to look at the waiter. “Well, that’s just rude,” Remus murmured under his breath. James and the waiter both watched to see a large beefy man glaring over at them, beckoning the waiter with two fingers in a way that made James’s skin crawl. He was sitting with two women, James could see the whole table quite easily when looking past Remus’s right earlobe. The woman on Whale Man’s right looked like she was being choked out by her string of pearls, lips pursed, a nose slightly too sharp for her face, and what appeared to be a stick up her ass considering the daggers she was shooting between the other woman at the table and the waiter. His eyes found the second woman, the one being subjected to Miss. Bony Lady’s eye daggers and was shocked he hadn’t noticed her the second she sat down. That hair was not something that should ever go unnoticed by anyone.

He couldn’t even see her face, as she was hiding it between her hands, and glaring down at the table, but he found himself craning his neck, trying to get a glimpse. There were waves of hostility trolling off of her and every element of her body language seemed to be screaming “DO NOT ENGAGE” . Her hair was forming a wall of fire, curtaining around her face, protecting her from the angry glares of her dinner mates. As the waiter walked over to their table, after nodding politely at Remus, he watched her emerge from her hands to grimace up at him apologetically.

He couldn’t hear what the whale man was saying, and subconsciously heard Peter start to tell some story about work and dish out portions of their appetizer, but he couldn’t pull his eyes back yet. The girl was flushed and glaring at the bony woman, saying something hushed but clearly angry. Her nose was scrunched up, nostrils flared and as angry as she looked he started to wonder if she’d giggle if he booped her nose, all scrunched up like that. Started cringing at himself for thinking about something as ridiculous as that.

From his distance, he couldn’t make out the color of her eyes, just that they were bright and sparkling and even from ten feet away he could feel the passion and emotion coming off her.

When the waiter had finally left, dismissed with an angry wave of Whale Man’s hand, he watched the red head roll her eyes, and twist her neck like cracking it would release the anger built up in her. He wondered how creepy she would find him if he offered to massage the shoulder for her, maybe there was some chiropractor-esque or glowstick pickup line he could use to impress her. Cheesy lines had never done him good in the past but she looked like she could use a laugh, maybe she’d think it was funn-

“Right, James?” James tore his eyes away from the girl to find all his friends staring at him, looking for his agreement on something James had not heard a single syllable of.

“Erm, yeah, right. Of course,” he nodded strongly, reaching for his water to gulp down and give himself a chance to calm the flush slowly rising up his neck.

Peter looked pointedly towards Remus, “See I told you, Lupin.”

As James busied himself with pushing risotto onto his spoon- the smallest spoon closest to him, was that meant for desert?- he carefully ignored Remus’s eyes on him, silently watching James and nodding to Peter.

“Mhm, Pete. Looks like I was mistaken.”

The rest of the course went by smoothly, James kept his eyes off of the Magical Mystery Woman as best he could, forcefully making himself enthusiastically engaged in Sirius’s discussion of the lineup of next week's game. He was in the middle of making an argument for why Johnson should start as center, not Malinsky when he got stopped mid sentence by Whale Man clearing his throat loud enough for half the bloody restaurant to hear and his entire argument went to shit.

Honestly, who did this bloke think he is, the bloody Prime Minister? Mystery Woman was too perfect to be putting up with this. Why would she go out in public with this oaf? Was he her brother? She seemed perfect but having him as a brother-in-law would really put a damper on the future marital bliss. She was gripping her knife so tightly it had to hurt, maybe he should offer up his own hand to squeeze instead, that’d be less painful he was sure. No. No, that was weird. He shook himself again and wrenched his eyes back to Sirius and resumed his argument.

They were just getting ready to clear their plates and ask for the desert woman when it happened. Mystery Woman’s table was still on their main course, she had ordered the fish, exactly the same meal James had eaten. Was that a sign of compatibility or what? If anyone had asked him later he would have sworn he was paying full and complete attention to Remus’s story of Dale from accounting messing up again but he was somehow also subconsciously completely and totally aware of every single one of Mystery Woman’s movements because he just knew she had just placed a delicate bite of fish on her fork and was chewing lightly when she let out this hacking, squawking, horrific noise.

Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god she is choking. My dream girl is choking and is going to choke on fish and DIE before I even learn her name. If she dies before I know her name I won’t even know what funeral to go to and how to mourn her properly and how would I even introduce myself at that funeral, ‘Hi, I stalked this girl from ten feet away and fell in love and will now live the rest of my life single and alone.”

If anyone were to have asked, he was positive he was still sitting at the table, nodding along with Remus. Somehow, without his conscious noticing, he had thrown back his chair and jumped to his feet, sending his chair falling backwards, narrowly missing a passing waitress. He practically leaped across the empty space, flown to behind her chair, gripped her shoulder tightly, and began to slam his hand against her back.

“Ma’am, miss, oh my god are you alright? Can you breathe? Can you hear me, miss, oh my god WE NEED AN AMBULANCE, breathe ma’am breathe!” James yelled at her, pounding against her back, mentally preparing to perform the heimlich maneuver, he had never learned it properly but he saw it on a crime show once and it worked there maybe it would work now? He was really regretting not taking that First Aid class with Remus when she suddenly yanked herself out of his grip, leaping to her own feet and spinning around to face him, red hair flying into his mouth as she turned.

Green. Her eyes were green. Green and bright and shining and gorgeous, oh my god she really can’t die now.

“Oh my god, are you alright??” He reached out again to grip her shoulders tightly, had him slamming on her back dislodged the fish? Would she live? Was he a hero?

“I will be when you explain why you just hit me repeatedly.” She crossed her arms over her chest, seemingly cross.

His eyes widened and he looked around for someone else to agree and call him a life saving hero. Whale Man and Bony Lady looked bewildered, like he had just suddenly sprouted into a fish, instead of saving their dinner mates life. All across the surrounding tables, he was met with concerned stares and the mortifying sinking feeling that he had completely misread the situation.

“I- um. I saved you! You were choking! I saved you….. Right?” He dropped his hands from her shoulders, one immediately going to fix itself in his hair, face burning bright red.

“I wasn’t choking, why did you think I was choking? Are you a doctor?”

He could hear Sirius laughing now. Oh god. Oh god. Oh god. “No, just erm- a concerned citizen? Trying to ah, do my civic duty, preventing fish related deaths, I- erm- I’m sorry I really thought you were choking you made like a hacking sound I thought you were dying, I really just wanted to help” he tugged on his hair, averting his eyes to the floor. Not only did he ruin his chance of getting Mystery Woman to fall in love with him but now he has basically assaulted her, dear God he is never going to live this down.

“That was a laugh.”

His eyes shot up to meet hers, “A what?”

“A laugh. I was laughing.”

“That was not a laugh. That was a deadly sound. Nobody in the world has a laugh that horrible.”

“Hitting me AND insulting me now, wow this is really my lucky day.”

James’s jaw dropped. He couldn’t even wrap his brain around the fact that he had just insulted her laugh just that this seemingly magnificent girl laughed like THAT. He couldn’t help the little chuckle that escaped him.

“Thats your real laugh? Oh my god I’m so sorry.”

“Sorry for insulting me or sorry that that's what my laugh sounds like?”

“Erm… both?”

She giggled then as well, light and small, and very, very different from the choking sound he heard earlier.

“See!” He pointed at her accusingly, “now that’s a laugh! That sound before was a dying bird and I won’t have you tell me otherwise.”

“Well,” her eyebrows lowered and she leaned in a little conspiratorially, whispering her next words, “the joke wasn’t actually very funny. I suppose my fake laugh may need a little more work before I attempt to use it so publicly again.”

The two shared a grin and wow was he screwed.

“You know,” he leaned in again, “I’ve been told all my laughs are top notch, fake and real, and if you were every interested in some tutoring, I suppose I could-”

“Ahem,” Whale Man cleared his throat again, “If you’re done disrupting our evening, I would very much like to return to my meal.” An apology on the tip of James’s tongue when he was cut off by Whale Man continuing to blabber, “Honestly, the heathens they allow to enter this establishment. Absolutely zero respect. Didn’t anyone ever teach you manners? Of course you attract this sort” The last words were directed to Mystery Woman and all the desire to apologize to Whale Man disappeared immediately. It wasn’t her fault he was an idiot who started hitting her.

He was prepared to say just that, and apologize to Mystery Woman, when she cut him off herself.

“Now you listen here, Vernon-” Mystery Woman began, red anger creeping up her neck.

“Lily, honestly,” Bony Lady cut in, “Just sit down and let's finish our meal and go, you’ve made enough of a scene.” Bony Lady’s tone was low, but sharp and cutting and seemed to send a shiver down Mystery Woman’s - or was it Lily?- spine.

He had a feeling she would have kept going, but also had a burning desire to run from Bone Lady’s eyes. It felt like they were piercing straight through him.

“I’m sorry,” he started loudly, one hand back in his hair, eyes quickly finding those incredible green ones, “I’m truly sorry for interrupting your meal and um hitting you and insulting you. Truthfully, you’re just spectacularly gorgeous and I thought you were choking and kind of lost my head a bit, I suppose,” his eyes averted quickly at that admission, missing the way hers started to fill with mirth and eyebrows began to creep up. “I’ll leave you to your meal.”

He turned on his heel and returned back to his table, picking his chair off the ground and sitting, adamantly avoiding eye contact with his friends. He felt her eyes burning into his neck and stared determinedly down at his fork.

“So you’ve gone crazy,” Sirius states, matter of factly with a shit eating grin, “that’s fun.”

“I thought she was choking,” he murmured under his breath.

“What was that, James? Couldn’t quite hear you. Speak up now or one of us will have to beat it out of you.” Peter could barely finish his sentence before him and Sirius began to guffaw obnoxiously. Even Remus was chuckling.

James groaned and covered his eyes with his hands. “Can we please just go, I will pay double if they bring the check right now.”

“Oh Jamie dear, why the rush?” Sirius tutted, “We ordered desert while you were busy saving lives! We wouldn’t dream of leaving before Pete gets his birthday desert!”

Muttering “tossers” under his breath, James set his jaw and raised his eyes to meet his friends, and not to look past Remus’s ear to Mystery Woman again.

By the time desert had arrived, James had been properly roasted by his mates about twelve times over and they had slowly moved onto other topics, all being other times James made a fool of himself in public. Sirius had just left for the restroom leaving Peter with the task of making James’s life hell.

Peter was just getting into the climax of his own personal favorite James humiliation tale, the Koi Pond Incident of ‘09, when James’s bite of tiramisu was interrupted by a light slapping against his back.

He spluttered and coughed grossly, ready to whip around and smack Sirius, assuming it was him, when he felt hot breath on his ear and a flash of red in his peripheral and completely froze.

“You alright there? Wouldn’t want you to choke. Just being a concerned citizen and all.” She murmured into his ear, teeth centimeters away from nipping it.

He turned to face her, gaping at her sudden closeness to find her smirking face mere inches away from his own.

“Thanks for that,” he croaked.

“Of course, always on the lookout. Doing my civic duty,” she winked. She winked. What the hell did that mean, oh my god, this woman would be the death of him.

“Here,” she pressed a slip of paper into his hand. “Just in case you want to stop me from choking at dinner another night too.” And then she winked again, spun on her heel, red hair whipping him in the face and left with another tinkling laugh. James stared dumbly down at the numbers on the paper, memorizing them immediately.

“Holy fuck, James. What was that?” Pete stared at James’s dumbfounded face. Sirius chuckled lightly from behind him, apparently having returned in time to watch the entire exchange.

“That, my friend,” Sirius clapped a hand down harshly onto James’s shoulder, “may have just been the future Mrs. Potter.”

The Last Job

Target: Fujin

The Last Job is a fitting title for this special as it marks the end of three cast member’s tenure in Lupin the 3rd. Goro Naya as Zenigata, Makio Inoue as Goemon, and Eiko Masuyama as Fujiko. They would appear again in Family Lineup which is an animated short but this would be their final big performance. Which is a shame for Goro Naya as his character spends most of the runtime buried in a cemetary.

I have mixed feelings with Last Job. One of my biggest gripes is this is apparently a continuation of a manga plotline, but they give no context, you’re just expected to know what happened. So Morganna is just introduced and you’re expected to know him, same with Andre. We get no background on Morganna, though I’d say he functions fine on his own, but Jigen and Andre’s rivalry is just told it exists, and Asuka’s background with interpol is barely touched upon. You get the sense there’s more at work, but the special has no interest in telling you what any of that is. I guess they want you to read the manga, but too bad there’s no way to do so in english. At least not for this particular manga.

The comedy is also just plain bad this time around. Most of the comedy revolves around the dog biting Lupin’s butt, or Jigen falling in water. There’s a scene where Lupin farts on the dog and I just couldn’t take it seriously. I also absolutely hate the character designs for the villains, they all look terrible. Morganna less than the others but the freaking bird man is especially heinous to my eyes. Angel’s Tactics was still worse but this was pretty awful still.

I will say I appreciate them bringing the Fuma Clan back, though it’s weird that Asuka and the other girl are “the last of the Fuma Clan” when we have a whole ova about them existing. Kinda weird, but once again, continuity in Lupin will drive you crazy.

The overall plot was alright. The pacing was super fast paced though, it felt like we had a million scenes just in the first thirty minutes. I’m not sure I’d call it good but it was at least entertaining enough to keep my attention instead of getting bored and cutting my nails during it like what happened with Sweet Lost Night.

So the treasure is something called Fujin. It’s basically a small statue of a dog that summons a black hole. Funny, I feel like this is weirdly similar to Lupin the 3rd the First. Anyway, it and a few other treasures are discovered first including a sword and a gem. Both of which just disappear partway through. The Fujin activates once and is then destroyed by Goemon because holy shit is a black hole generator frightening. Fujiko almost makes it out with some treasure but the production staff gods decided she didn’t deserve it and her plane breaks down. Nobody gets anything.

Lupin’s Reward: $0 and a sore behind

This special also had a really weird scene where they just explain that 16th century Romans had the technological capability to create lasers and we’re shown a group of them with laser guns and what looks like a robot. I’ve suspended my disbelief for a lot of stuff during this watchalong but this had to be by far the weirdest.

Next up is Blood Seal of the Eternal Mermaid which I’ve heard good things about. Discotek also recently released it with an english dub featuring the classic Part 2 cast including Tony Oliver as Lupin. As such, I’m super excited. We’re also nearing the end of the specials and movies, at least of what we’ll be watching for now. Soon we’ll get to start the tv series.

You'll have to pony up for individual movies if you need a Hogwarts fix. That means none of the major streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon) offer them as part of their subscription lineup right now, which is a bummer, but that's what happens when a movie or series is in high demand. A la carte it is. You can 'accio' them by renting any installment on all major VOD platforms, including Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, and YouTube.

Since NBCUniversal owns the rights to air the series on TV, watching them on one of its channels is the next best place to find Hogwarts adventures. While you may remember FreeForm (a Disney-owned channel) used to have Harry Potter weekends, you won't find them there anymore. Now, they're on USA and SyFy, and the networks have Potter marathons fairly frequently. If you have a cable subscription that includes those channels, you can check out TV Guide's listings to see when they'll be playing next.

Even though the Harry Potter franchise is technically a WarnerMedia property since the films were distributed by Warner Bros., and therefore should be housed on Warner's platform HBO Max, there's a deal dating back to 2016 that gives NBCUniversal the TV and digital rights to the films until 2025. Meaning, in addition to airing on NBC's cable channels, they'll also arrive on NBC's streaming platform Peacock from time to time. The movies aren't available to stream there right now, having left after a brief stint in fall 2020—but according to The Observer, they'll be back sometime in early 2021.
