Headcanons/speculation about how the preps acquired their wealth and current source if income:
The Harringtons: "Harrington Oil" can be seen advertized on the go-cart racetrack so we can assume they are oil tycoons. Derby is featured in Aquaberry advertisements so perhaps his family are shareholders and invest in other luxury clothing brands as well.
The Gauthiers: It's hard to say. Chad mentions Pinky's father bought her an entire ice cream factory so maybe he owns a major food manufacturing company a la Nestle. I also guess her parents are philanthropists considering that she has no qualms about donating to charity
The Taylors: Bif mentions his dad possibly bulldozing some low-income housing so I'm going to say land development and real estate. If he gets hit by a car Bif will mention his father being an attorney. I'm also going to consider Derby's little jab about him being a Democrat and say his dad is a political attorney.
The Spencers: "Spencer Shipping", a shipping manufacturing company; Tad says his father is a self-made man but perhaps his mother is old-money, hence the inbreeding. She may have came from an old British aristocrat family, and Tad does his best to replicate her accent.
The Vanderveldes: Sounds like "Vanderbilt" so imma say railroads
The Vendomes: Gord's dad is an attorney and owns a law firm that specializes in criminal cases. He also owns several hotels so he's in the hospitality business
The Montroses: Bryce's dad has gambled away most of their money and whatever source of wealth they have isn't enough to get their family out of debt. The best guess I can give is that his father is an investor and is currently seeing little to no returns on his investments (after more digging I found a quote were Bryce states his father told him he "lost a bundle in the stock market").
The Ogilvies: Literally no dialogue hints at his family's business so let's say his father owns a large vehicle manufacturing company and his mother is a professional conductor.
The Morrises: Chad mentions his father a lot like he's a really important person so perhaps he's in politics or works on the board of education. He mentions not receiving his usual care package from his mother, meaning that she may not live nearby in the Vale. She may have a profession that requires her to travel a lot. Judging by Chad's quotes about the environment I'd say she's an environmentalist.

Fed bars former Santander Consumer executive over high-priced gifts
The Federal Reserve has banned a former Santander Consumer USA executive from the banking industry for improperly accepting high-priced gifts such as Super Bowl tickets and luxury hotel stays.
The former executive, Brent Huisman, “routinely solicited and accepted” gifts from auto auction companies that worked with Santander Consumer, the Fed said in an enforcement action made public Thursday. Huisman consented to the issuance of the order.
Huisman previously reached a settlement over the issue with Santander Consumer, which had sued him for accepting the gifts and for the misuse of confidential information. He had also agreed to pay $275,000 to Santander Consumer, the subprime U.S. auto lending affiliate of the Spanish banking giant Banco Santander.
Tumblr media
Huisman accepted more than $1 million in gifts from auto auction companies, including Kentucky Derby tickets, first-class airfare and sponsorships for youth sports teams he coached, Dallas-based Santander Consumer said in its lawsuit.
Santander Consumer also alleged that Huisman and his wife used credit cards from an auction house that worked with Santander Consumer. The two used the cards to pay for sporting goods, airline tickets and a yacht rental in Cancun, the lawsuit said. The company said that it learned of the gifts after Huisman’s departure.
As the company’s senior director of asset remarketing, Huisman worked with auto auction companies to sell repossessed vehicles or cars that came off leasing arrangements.
He left Santander Consumer in June 2019, two months after asking staff to print confidential spreadsheets and presentations that contained company sales data and its fees with several vendors, the lawsuit said. He would later use those documents at an unnamed Santander Consumer competitor, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit said that Huisman’s conduct disrupted Santander Consumer’s business and harmed the company’s reputation and relationships with current and potential business partners.
Huisman’s lawyer did not respond to a request for comment. Santander Consumer declined to comment.
The Fed’s enforcement action prohibits Huisman from working for a bank without the central bank’s prior approval. Violations would open him up to further civil or criminal penalties.

Hiking Journal: West Coast Trail
Day 0.6: Across the Island
August 26
After a hotel breakfast of good muffins and porridge in a cup (but with hot water, and sugar, which would be considered doubly luxurious while camping!) we had to stock up on cold medicine and last minute supplies, so sadly there was no time for a Nanaimo bar before leaving Nanaimo. A leaky tire on the car meant driving quick like to the Port Alberni Canadian Tire where there was an opening for a mechanic. This meant having to pass through a provincial park of splendid old growth firs without time for a glance. Then it was a long lunch at a Noodle Box in the big-box outskirts of town while waiting on the tire shop.
The day grew more relaxed and fun into the grey drizzly afternoon. Took a few minutes to explore the the harbour, where some neat boats were docked. The Songhee is a floating b&b. The Frances Barkley is one of two ships, the other being the then-absent famed old Lady Rose, that ply the mail and passenger trade between Alberni and Bamfield, down the inlet on the more open coast. For years these boats were the only public connection to Bamfield, but now there’s a fully paved if slow and winding road.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The rain carried on soaking deep into every bit of forest as we pulled into Pachena Bay Campground at the north end of the West Coast Trail, a few kilometres from the town of Bamfield. Long arguments on bushcraft, the finer point of tarps and knots and string adjustments, followed as we rigged up a tent shelter from brand new Port Alberni Canadian Tire tarp and paracord. I think we did a good job, though that didn’t stop everything set up from soaking through as the rain picked up into the evening.
Tumblr media
Flora’s, the best restaurant in Bamfield (and since the hotel pub was closed, the only one) is on the west side of town. The western peninsula has no road access, so a couple of water taxis make hefty sums ferrying people across the water. A surly raincoated guy named N—- was the only one working, and to get us across the channel in the rain he charged ten dollars per person, per way. That’s a pricey premium on dinner. Good thing my spice-blackened cod burger was fantastic. West Bamfield has a very charming boardwalk along the foreshore, so we wandered along that, soaking up more rain, after dinner.
Tumblr media
The boardwalk leads past painted cottages,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
high-masted fishing boats, tiny seaplanes,
Tumblr media
and little dark patches of shore-wood all decorated with stringlights and little painted mushrooms.
Tumblr media
A whale’s rib rests on one of the docks.
Tumblr media
On the soaking wet boat ride back to the east side, N—- was still grumpy, but we also rode with K——, a Huu-ay-aht Trail Guardian with 25 years on the job. See, the West Coast Trail passes mostly through Pacific Rim National Park, but also through scattered small village-based First Nations land areas of three different Nations. It’s a very different geographical arrangement from the larger reserves I’m familiar with on the prairie. That means that maintenance of the trail falls both to Parks rangers and to Guardians employed directly by the three nations, each of which have a cabin in their land along the trail for the Guardians on shift. K—— was heading out to work soon after a salmon fishing derby, and invited us to come visit the cabin, if he was there when we passed by, for fresh salmon and coffee. Yes please!
Crawled into sleeping bags wet, but at least not too cold, to get well rested for further adventures the next day.

Honeymooners- E.M. (With This Ring Sequel)
Okay, I know that this isn't nearly as long as the With This Ring parts, but I just felt like there wasn't much left to say about this story. They're married, and that's all that matters, ya know. But here's a little bit about their time on their honeymoon! I hope you enjoy!
Y/N and Eddie go on their honeymoon!
Masterlist With This Ring 1 < 2 > 3
TW- none, I think
Pairing- Eddie x Reader

Tumblr media
A couple of days after the wedding, you and Eddie pack your bags and hit the road in the van, driving south to the beach. You take your time, stopping at anything that catches your eye as you pass town after town, opting to sleep in the van rather than spending a bunch of money on hotels as you pass through state after state. You indulge Eddie first at the Corvette Museum in south Indiana just before you hit Kentucky, where you drag Eddie into the Kentucky Derby Museum, then to the art museum hidden beneath a hotel in downtown Louisville.
As you travel farther down south, you fall victim to a couple of tourist traps, but you still laugh as you walk out, not caring how dumb whatever “world’s biggest” whatever was. All that matters is you and Eddie being married and being together.
Georgia is a fun stop, people looking at the faded “JUST MARRIED” paintjob on the side of the van as you and Eddie hop out to go peach picking at an orchard, giving you wild stares as you walk tree to tree, Eddie, as always, clad in black, and you sporting a sweet sundress. An unlikely pair in their eyes, but hey, if you’re happy, it’s not their business. You feed each other juicy bites of peach, laughing as the sweet juice drips down your chins.
Finally, you make it to the coast in the west panhandle of Florida, right on the Gulf of Mexico. With all of the money you saved by sleeping in the van, you get to relax in luxury, fine foods and a fruity cocktail always in your grasp as you sunbathe together on the beach. Of course, both of you hailing from Indiana, you get burnt to a crisp, opting to spend the next day indoors shopping and sightseeing.
Soon, though, too soon, it seems, you have to start making your way back home. As you’re driving together, taking the scenic route closer to the east coast, hands clasped together over the center console, Eddie looks at you from the driver side. “I have decided,” He says, a smile on his lips, “when we retire, we’re gonna do this full time.” You raise your eyebrows in amusement.
“What about our kids? Our grandkids? We’ll never get to see them!” You exclaim.
“I never said we wouldn’t come home for holidays and stuff, but ya know, I wanna see more, I think. This has been my first real vacation ever! I just don’t want it to end.” He gives you those puppy dog eyes, making you giggle.
“I get it. Maybe we can just take the whole family with us once you get all rich and famous with the band!” You suggest. Eddie rolls his eyes.
“Yeah sure, or when you become the CEO of some big finance brokerage.”
“You say that like it sounds impossible! I’m wounded, Eddie!” You feign sadness, crossing your arms over your chest.
“Hey, I never said that! My girl is the smartest, most talented woman alive. There’s nothing to stop you from doing whatever you want!” He exclaims.
“My point exactly! So, when you get all rich and famous with the band,” You say pointedly, “we’ll have all the money we want to travel when we get old.” Eddie hums at that, a small smile painting his face as he brushes his finger over your knuckles. “What?” You ask.
“I can’t wait to grow old with you, Y/N.” His eyes are filled with the future, and suddenly, so are yours.
“Me too, Eddie.” You fall into a comfortable silence after that, just thinking about what’s in store for you, and suddenly, going home doesn’t seem like the end of your honeymoon, it just seems like the beginning of the rest of your life.

An interview with music journalist Paul Zollo. I believe this is from 2000. I’m a sucker for Billie Joe talking about his songwriting process.
By PAUL ZOLLO
SEVEN STORIES ABOVE THE SUNSET STRIP in Hollywood is the Chateau Marmont, an old hotel rife with the ghosts and scandals of Hollywood’s recent and not-so-recent past. Famous for the elegant, old-world discretion it affords all its guests, for decades it’s been a safe harbor for stars seeking to circumvent the squall of media surveillance. It’s where John Belushi died, sadly, back in bungalow three, and where Jim Morrison wrecked his back by swinging Tarzan-like from the roof, using a drain pipe as a vine. Every star, it seems, from Chaplin and Bogart to Dylan and Lennon have hidden out here while in Hollywood. “If you must get in trouble, do it at the Chateau Marmont,” Harry Cohn, the first boss of Columbia Studios, once told William Holden.
So it’s an appropriate setting for Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist of Green Day, to be holding court. Armstrong and the band are no strangers to scandal – they’re the ones who started a mudfight that bordered on insurrection at Woodstock II; they’ve been outspoken about their fondness for drugs and alcohol; they’ve been especially harsh in their expressions of scorn for many other bands; and they’ve frequently “redecorated” hotel suites, bars and Tower Records stores alike with a flair for creative demolition that brings to mind the heady decadence of the Doors and others.
In fact, parallels between Armstrong and Jim Morrison abound. Like the leader of the Doors, Billie Joe is the creative catalyst of his group, but only writes within the fold of his fellow musicians. Like Morrison, Armstrong has been known to walk on the razor’s edge of life, bringing an authentic, expansive passion to every song he sings. He’s also been known to match his inclination to strip his soul bare in song by taking off his clothes in concert. The difference is that when Jim Morrison did it, all hell broke loose, the country was shocked and the singer was arrested. But when Billie Joe does it, he gets acknowledged on the MTV news, Kurt Loder smirks, and that’s about that. Being shocking these days is just not like it used to be.
‘It’s something unpredictable,
But in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life.”
From “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)”
By GREEN DAY
Few things seemed more unpredictable than the thought that Green Day would have a Number One hit with a pretty ballad of all things. Even more unlikely would be that the song, officially entitled “Good Riddance” but better known as “Time Of Your Life,” would become as ubiquitous in the American consciousness as the Star Wars theme. Used on “Seinfeld,” two episodes of “E.R.,” and extraneous sporting events (as when Mark MacGuire became the king of baseball’s home-run derby), Green Day’s ballad quickly became more famous than Green Day itself.
“Good Riddance” now stands alongside Springsteen’s “Born In The USA”, Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A.” and Sting’s “Every Breath You Take,” as one of the nation’s most misappropriated hit singles. Like all of those songs, which are much darker if you examine their core than the mainstream ever seemed to recognize, “Good Riddance” actually comes closer to condemnation than the kind of nostalgic celebration for which it’s been used:
“Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it’s worth, it was worth all the while
I hope you had the time of your life. “
From “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)”
By GREEN DAY
Though Green Day’s presence on the world stage shifted from popular to astronomical because of this song, many of their old fans felt alienated by their secret heroes’ injection into the mainstream. “[`Time of Your Life’] was a drastic change for us to record,” Billie Joe said. “We knew that there were going to be some people that weren’t going to like it because it’s not a 1-2-3-4-Let’s-go-punk-rock tune. Mike [Dirnt] said, `This is a real beautiful song, who cares what people think?’ So we just went for it. Long term thinking, you know. Punk is not just the sound, the music. Punk is a life-style. We’re just as much punk as we used to be.”
Of course, definitions flow fast and fluid, as purveyors of punk, such as Armstrong, play along the borders of pop. “A lot of punk rock bands are always trying to be so hard all of the time,” he said. “Macho brutality doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a good songwriter. I think that some of the Beatles’ songs are way more punk rock than most punk songs written today. Like the song `Yesterday.’ It’s such a bittersweet song. “
Billie Joe was born in 1972 and grew up in Rodeo, a little Californian town just outside of Berkeley. His father and uncle were both jazz drummers. “I was a guitarist in a house of drummers,” he said. His father died when he was ten, the same year he met a neighbor named Mike Pritchard who shared his passion for making music. Together they decided to drop out of high school to start a band, which they called Sweet Children. It was a decision Billie’s mother encouraged. “My mom sort of let me do whatever I wanted,” he said. “When I quit school, she thought that was a good idea because I was really ambitious to play. So I started touring when I was seventeen.”
Pritchard changed his name to Mike Dirnt, Tre Cool replaced Al Sobrante as official drummer, and they called themselves Green Day, a Bay-area euphemism for a day spent smoking pot. Their first release was an indie EP called 1000 Hours, after which they signed with Lookout Records to make 39/Smooth and Kerplunk. In 1994 they ascended to the major leagues, signing with Reprise, and released Dookie. They soon  became an MTV mainstay, and their mudstorm performance that year at Woodstock cemented their reputation as a band on the edge. Three more singles followed, as did sales of more than eight million albums worldwide, and a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance.
Insomniac was released in the fall of ’95, but instead of going on a European tour as planned to launch it, they elected instead to stay home and write and record more songs. The result was the most popular, and most critically acclaimed album of their career, Nimrod, which included “Time Of Your Life.”
Warning was the new album at the time of this interview, and the impetus for Billie to talk. Inspired by the rich lyricism of Springsteen’s The River and Dylan’s Bringing It All Back Home, Green Day went away for a while to write and play the songs before recording them. It’s their first self-produced and most sonically adventurous album to date, blending layers of acoustic guitars in with the electrics, and with some unexpected detours, such as the German beer-hall stomp of “Misery,” and the Clash-meets-Kinks pop-punk of the title song.
“Caution police sign you’d better not cross
Is the cop or am I the one that’s really dangerous?
Sanitation expiration date question everything
Or shut up and be a victim of authority
Warning, live without warning…”
From “Warning”
By GREEN DAY
Today Billie Joe is ensconced within an overstuffed burgundy couch in his hotel suite. Although he’s drinking coffee from china cups, and eating fresh fruit and croissants from a silver tray, he’s remained loyal to the punk lifestyle, and is wearing a black t-shirt and baggy jeans. Prior to our talk, rather than linger in the luxury of his suite, he ducked down into the hotel’s bleak back stairway for a cigarette. Though he’s undeniably a star of the first degree, he’s uncomfortable with such designations, and shuns all the trappings of stardom. As opposed to the Ferraris and Lamborghinis driven by his peers, an old Ford Fairlane remains his vehicle of choice. He did admit to one extravagance, however, which he revealed somewhat sheepishly. “As soon as I could afford it,” he confessed, “I went out and had it primered.”
BLUERAILROAD: You write all the songs together in the band. Do you start songs on your own and bring them in?
BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG: Yeah, sometimes. I’ll come up with the song with the chord changes and the lyrics, and then I bring them into practice, and then we sort of restructure them together. I like to come in with a tune. I’ll just play guitar and sing it for them, and then we start to learn it. And as soon as we start to learn it, we can make changes and come up with a different structure. Move the chorus around, make the verse a little longer. That kind of thing. I definitely like to think of it as a collaboration between the three of us.
Do you always change the songs?
Well, we have a lot of songs. There have been some that I have brought in and nothing really needs to be done. Sometimes I’ll suggest a part that needs to be worked with, and we’ll try some different things. And then they’ll write their bass-lines and drum parts around it.
Do you ever have a problem sharing credit on songs you wrote alone?
Well, we’re a band. We’ve been able to stick through a lot of years because the three of us support each other. The songs come from Green Day, and I like to stick by that. We like to just keep things equal in the band, and I think it’s what has made our band healthy over the years. We give each other respect. There is no one who stands out more than the other one in this group. Especially since we’ve known each other for so long.
These days do you write on electric guitar?
No, on acoustic. I have a Silverine Harmony. But it sounds good. I just have it around the house, so I’ve written most of the songs on it.
Do those songs then shift a lot when you bring them to the band, and play them on electric?
No, because I always have it in the back of my head about the dynamics of electric guitar and drums and bass. Between me and Mike and Tre, I always have that dynamic in my head – what am I going to bring to the table that they’re going to be able to play, and which will have our certain energy. I always keep our energy and our music in mind, sort of subconsciously. But I think that’s the beauty of this. That not only can I play these songs with a band at full volume, but also that I can play them on a cheap, acoustic guitar. And it can have the same kind of impact.
           “Warning” would work that way.
Yeah, it does. That kind of came all together at the same time. I think lyrics on this record were really important to me, and to have a well-rounded record as far as what kind of topics I wanted to write about, and sing about. That was one of those songs that seemed to just write itself. It just came really naturally.
Is that unusual for you, the feeling that a song writes itself?
Well, I try to go for inspired moments. But if I want to write a song that sounds like it has a pop kind of edge to it, I really want to be able to say something. I have to say something – it’s vital for me. I can’t just write something that would be sugar-coated, and have a pop song with nice lyrics that go along with what everyone is doing on the radio these days. It’s very important for me to have a message that goes along with the writing. So, you know, what comes to mind for me is a song like “The Ballad of John & Yoko,” where [Lennon] had this really nice sounding song. But the lyrics penetrate like a knife. “They’re gonna crucify me…” That’s kind of nice way — nice, I mean, in an oxymoronic sense – to put forward something you want to attack.
You’ve done that in many songs.
Yeah, I think it adds a sort of demented side a little bit, sort of like a clown in a circus. But it also makes the lyrics a lot stronger. If you take a band like Rage Against The Machine, the music is aggressive, and the lyrics are aggressive at the same time. And I love Rage Against The Machine, but sometimes it feels like you getting bombarded by someone’s else’s point of view. The person is not telling you to think, but what to think. And that’s one thing that I really wanted to come across in the music and the lyrics. To think about the world around you, and not what to think, so to speak. And at the same time, to have my opinions coming through at the same time.
Are you always clear about the meaning of a song while writing?
No. That’s hard. I mean, sometimes I’ll have things in the back of my head that I want to write about. But I never want to come across as pretentious or preachy. So I just wait for my thoughts to settle. To a certain extent, you have to be a little self-righteous and I think it’s healthy. Especially when, nowadays, there’s so much stuff that is about decadence. And when it comes to rebellion, a guy who has a Rolex watch and is driving around in a Porsche, talking about that he really wants something to break, I don’t really think of that as rebellion, I think of that just as a decadent rock star.
Do you have any kind of routine for songwriting?
Last record I was just sort of pounding songs. Anytime I had any inkling of an idea of anything at all, I would just grab my guitar and play it and work on it no matter what the song was like. Whether it was inspired or I just got drunk and started playing. But this time I waited for inspired moments. And I think it took me a long time just because of that. I wanted everything to sound refreshing, and something that would make you want to turn it up a little more.
Did you have times when you tried to work and nothing would come?
Oh yeah. You get frustrated. You feel, “Man, I just want to write a fucking song.” And sometimes it’s just not there. And you can’t dwell on that when that happens. You have to just let it go.
I don’t ever want to try to outdo myself. I feel like if you try to outdo yourself from the last thing, instead of just working on your inspiration, I think the music kind of suffers a little bit, sometimes. Sometimes I’ll just get a very general idea about the kind of song I want to write. And I’ll just sort of store it in the back of my mind and see what comes out. It can come out in five minutes, it can come out in five days, five years, five decades.
Are there songs you worked on for years?
Yeah. “Longview” was one that we worked on for years. We knew what we wanted to write about. I told Mike to write a bass line and one day I came home. This is when we lived in the same house. He had just dropped some acid (laughs) and he said, “Listen to this.” And I said, “Okay, I guess it sounds good.” He came up with this bass line that really worked well, so we ended up practicing and came up with the song.
Are there many songs you start that you don’t finish?
Yes. And I’ll just wait for the right time and the right place for it. There are some songs I finish but then I think it’s not right for the record we’re working on. There’s a couple of songs like that off of Nimrod. “Time of My Life” had been written a couple of years before.
That song resounded in enormously with the public. Was it just a fluke, or did you sit down with the intention of writing that kind of song?
Both. I think that anyone can sit down and write a song. Whether or not it’s any good is another thing altogether. You know, there’s no school you can go to that will help you learn how to become a songwriter. But you can sit down and do it. Especially with rock & roll. But to put something down that is actually really great, it does go beyond you a little bit, and sometimes it takes patience.
Do you write all the time?
Yeah. Whether it’s good or bad, I don’t know. Or if it’s appropriate for what kind of idea or sound that we want to get across on the record.
Where do you think the great songs come from?
I don’t know. I really don’t. It comes from somewhere deep down inside of you that you didn’t even know existed. It’s kind of like seeing a shrink or something. (Laughs) There can be a lot of anger, or sadness, or joy, that you had but you didn’t even know you really had – but it can all come out. You feel a connection with it, and so other people can, too. You strike a nerve.
Does songwriting get easier the more you do it?
I think so. I think you definitely learn more as you go. I think you find new ways to motivate yourself. You test yourself a little bit more and see what comes about. And you challenge yourself in new ways to see what comes out. You learn new ways to get the engines going. But whether or not it does get easier, it’s what I do. And I love doing it.

King Pedro V 1st Trip (May 28th to September 15th, 1854): England, Part 4
Tumblr media
Then he left north to visit Birmingham, Sheffield, Manchester and Liverpool. About these trips, he wrote: “It was a very interesting excursion for me, not only because of the different establishments that I had to visit in these cities, but because of the idea that it gave me of the speed of communication in Great Britain.” The train to Birmingham took just two hours. Once in the city, he was received by the Mayor, the military governor and the Portuguese deputy consul, Mr. Collins. He liked the train station, but found the city “ugly and unpleasant”, noting, however, that it was “very industrious” and had “the happiness of his pauperism being proportionally very small”, which, in his opinion, it stemmed from the ease of getting a job. After a short rest period - D. Pedro insisted that they should not waste “a moment of time” - he went to see the factories that had made the city famous. Surprisingly, none satisfied him. Looking at children, aged six and seven, working in the factories, he wondered about what would be the best way to educate the people: whether learning in the workshop, whether at school. In spite of everything, he was inclined towards the first hypothesis, considering that the second would produce “French mechanics, that is, unbearable beings that serve everything without serving anything.”
On the 27th of June, D. Pedro was leaving for Chatsworth,
Tumblr media
the country residence of the Dukes of Devonshire.
Tumblr media
Herds of fallow deer grazed under oaks, the gardens had centuries-old trees, the glass greenhouses were the most beautiful in the universe. After lunch, the duke showed him inside the palace. The prince was astonished with his painting collection, which included the paintings of Titian, Rubens and Rafael. At the end of the day, he summed up what he had seen: “To get an idea of the luxury of the Duke of Devonshire it is necessary to know that this gentleman, not content with having a palace, as perhaps no king has him, and not satisfied with the beautiful conservatory [greenhouse] that has next to the palace, had a glass walkway built in the garden, so as not to catch cold in winter.” After admiringly mentioning the transplanted rocks, the water games erected and the grafted plants, he heatedly defended the right to property.
From Chatsworth went to Sheffield,
Tumblr media
having been impressed when, when he arrived, he saw, in the distance, the cloud of smoke announcing the location. He gave workers "shakehands", moralized about smuggling and ended up criticizing the Portuguese "big shots" who imported everything and anything without paying royalties. After dinner, he left for Manchester where he stayed in the Queen Hotel:
Tumblr media
At dawn, he was awakened by the “noise of the innumerable vehicles that, since 3 am [circulated] through the streets of the city”. The first factory he visited was the cotton spinning of Benjamin Nicholls, the mayor of the city, surrounded by dozens of similar units. After a visit to a company that exported to Africa, he said that, given that Portugal also has colonies, the colonial guidelines would be justified: “We must make Africa one of the emporiums of our trade, promoting, by all possible means, competition to English products, which deprive us of an important income and at the same time establish the English dominance in Africa in a certain way.” In the end, he went to see a brand new prison, built according to the cellular system, copied from Pentoville.
On 29th June he was in Liverpool. At the hotel where he stayed the Adelphi Hotel,
Tumblr media
he met the rich “slave” Manuel Pinto da Fonseca, which bothered him, causing him to try not to meet him again. Then he went to see the docks, customs and warehouses, having been amazed by the movement of ships. The concert hall
Tumblr media Tumblr media
left an identical impression, "the largest and best decorated in all of Europe." In the end, he found a way to pass through Wales. Although he liked the harp player he heard at dinner, he considered the music band that welcomed him a horror. The next day, he went to see the two bridges, one suspended
Tumblr media
and the other tubular,
Tumblr media
that connected the island of Anglesey to Wales. He especially admired the latter, built by Stephenson:
Tumblr media
"Our generation leaves a resounding memory in history and humanity will bless the names of Watt, Stephenson, Paxton and Prince Albert." More than the landscape, it was technology that delighted him.
After this foray he returned to London, where the Count of Lavradio was waiting for him at the station. On July 1st, he went horseback riding with his uncle in Hyde Park and, at night, to the English theater, where he watched a play that did not go down in history, after which he said goodbye to members of the royal family and of the Portuguese residing in London. It was 6 am on July 3rd when Mindelo left Woolwich on his way to Belgium. He had spent an entire month in England, the country that would come to occupy the top of his preferences.
On the high seas, he dedicated his free time to praising the combination of the monarchical principle with the democratic and aristocratic principles: “From this extraordinary amalgam of forces that are commonly opposed, and which tend to exorbitant each other, attacking each other, the wonderful social order that is born note in England.” As for the role of the English monarch, here's what he thought: “The king, in England, despite the spread of philosophical ideas, is still a sacred person, who is nothing, when he doesn't want to be and everything when he wants to be. The King, in England, has no direct initiative, so to speak, in the government of the State, but when his actions, his thoughts, his tendencies are in favor of the popular principle of the State, when he stands at the head of the public interests, he takes on extraordinary strength, moral strength that almost divinizes him.” He appreciated the party organization, with two well-defined parties, as well as the press, which seemed free. He noted that England was going through a bad period, due to the maintenance of the two armadas - one on the Black Sea and the other on the Baltic - and the absence of great statesmen: in his opinion, neither Grenville, much Gladstone, much Derby had the chance. stature of Palmerston, Clarendon and Aberdeen. But that did not alter his admiration for this country.
