New Theory on the Story Curse

**SOME SPOILERS**

Okay so @rachiecakes14 gave me the idea of Aurora Valor being very good at curses on my post about the Valors and wondering why Aurora and Castor don’t have magic that were told about. Her diary is said to have a curse on it and there are other reasons why this could be true.

What if her and Lysander used their powers together (Lysander being something to do with memories, Aurora theoretically being good with curses) and made the story curse? And then the other set of twins that were inventors (Tempest and Romulus if I am correctly remembering) we’re able to connect it to their arches. Like the giant one at the entrance you’re not supposed to talk going through so that the story magic doesn’t get out.

We don’t know when it was created but isn’t it odd Jacks is able to tell Evangeline what happened to Merrywood despite the story curse? (Unless if the fact he was there changes something) After Castor is killed we know he goes back and attacks S.Wood in his vampire form. Since everyone thought after Castors death the Valors made a monster (who was actually castor) to avenge him it would make sense if they want people to forget.

What if the Valors wanted to fix their reputation and tried to make everyone forget about it by cursing the North?

Since we only got crumbs of the Valor siblings, I decided to kinda think what they could be like based on the Canon mentions. I made some pinterests for each of them including Castor and Aurora 🌸

Apollo and Evangeline Jacks are reincarnation. Apollo is none other than lysander theory behind it

I read the book, there was a chapter when eva was looking in the books and she found one of the honora's son lysander has a power of doing something with memory. And as we saw at last when actually honora returned only then apollo was able to erase eva's memories. So I think with the return of honora valor all the powers of the other valors are returned again. Or it could be possible that apollo is the reincarnation of lysander.

Again in many occasions we have seen that jacks mentioned apollo isn't someone eva thinks he is. I think jacks knows that apollo is a dirty person. Even jacks said apollo was his friend and it didn't clear that when their friendship begun. I think apollo either is reincarnation of lysander or he himself wasn't death all this years. This is also a question that why valors asked the archer to kill the fox so desperately that they actually cursed a spell on the archer.

It could be possible that lysendar was in love with the fox too but that fox wasn't in love with him so the valors wanted the fox to die. But the fox fell for archer instead. It could be possible that eva is the reincarnation of the fox. It was mentioned that eva was conceived in the north so it's not some kind of coincidence that her last name was fox too. She used to listen the archer story from her mother it's possible that her mother knew who eva was and wanted to make her know the story. If eva is the reincarnation of the fox and apollo is lysander and jacks is the archer then the love triangle seems to fit so nicely that the history is repeating itself and this time love will win and this time jacks will get his fox. His one true love is to be his this time.

I love how everyone thought that Apollo was Lysander Valor or had some horrible reason to kill Jacks.

When in reality he just a Loser 20 year old guy who has way to much money but no friends or women in his life.

He’s just mad that his own wife liked Jacks more than him not to mention he’s upset that Jacks used him and pretended to be his friend.

Not to mention the Daddy Issues.

I 100% know that Tiberius was definitely their parents favorite child.

Which I’m kinda excited to see a scene between Apollo and Tiberius play out, Apollo’s gonna be pissed because his younger brother accidentally killed him while trying to kill his wife.

Hopefully that Apollo continues to be a Whiny little baby and bring up his daddy issues more.

So now that we pretty much know Apollo isn't Lysander, do we think maybe Jacks will try to make some sort of deal with Lysander to get Eva's memories back?

Did Apollo make a deal with Lysander to take them from her?

Did Apollo make a deal with ALL of the Valors? To establish them as a great house in exchange?

Okay, some acftl opinions under the cut, since I was asked. By no means all of them and they’re… a bit critical. Not here to ruin anyone’s day, please love it if you loved it, but I’m feeling kind of weird about this one

Obviously the HEAVIEST of SPOILERS FOR A CURSE FOR TRUE LOVE

Nothing was tied up except EvaJacks being together. Like! Good for them! But even that wasn’t even… satisfying. Luc? Done. Marisol? Gone. Castor out just MASSACRING PEOPLE. LaLa, neutral toward Dane. The Valors? Just out and about now after like a thousand years of everyone just knowing they were dead for sure. ALL of House Fortuna massacred and basically no one blinked an eye. Jacks apples? Who gives a shit.

Is Jacks mortal now? In theory yes but it was never… really remarked upon? He shouldn’t have his powers anymore, he shouldn’t be a Fate, he shouldn’t be immortal… but not a word of this was mentioned.

What… was the point in mentioned Lysander having the ability to mess with memories if he had nothing to do with any of this? Did Aurora like… distill his powers? Unlikely, as it feels truly unrelated. This is something Jacks, Castor, and LaLa knew- why did none of them bring this up in an effort to restore Eva’s memories? Lysander’s ability, if I’m not mistaken, was not mentioned at ALL in this book, despite it revolving around Eva not being able to remember anything

You want backstory on Jacks? NO. Was Jacks from a Great House? Literally any information on who he was pre Fate besides trying to help people? No. Nothing.

LaLa deserves her revenge against Aurora. No joke. Aurora not being punished whatsoever besides still not getting to be with Jacks (called everything about Aurora no joke). Aurora’s actions were UH kind of the worst by far. Especially when it’s turned around that Aurora didn’t even love Lyric? Y’all.

I know a lot of this ties into the happy for now idea but it was just TOO much. Stephanie Garber has talked about this being the last book in the world for the foreseeable future which drives me NUTS after the ending. The whole book felt so rushed and so weirdly all over the place? With a handful of awkward walk backs chalked up to “well the story curse” and clumsy dropped plots?

“Where do we go now?” “Wherever you want” uh, no, 1) what. What kind of ending is that? After all this? 2) I mean. So long as that doesn’t include the Meridian Empire, I guess?

Idk, I’ve got more, but being left with FAAAARRRR more questions than answers bothers the hell out of me. I’m in the process of listening to the audiobook post reading it and I’ll probably physically read it again when my standard edition from faecrate comes in but for now. Hm. Gonna let this stew for awhile. I will say though it gave me the drive to write the fairytale book I’ve been wanting to lol

tbona finally arrived in my country, in my language, and i did a very useful re-reading 🥹 i have a few points to highlight!

❥ evangeline is a seventeen-year-old girl who has nothing in her life. she has no friends, relatives or family. she is alone. she is a deeply lonely character. in this book, what she clings to is a chance to be happy with apollo. that, to me, fully justifies her ''attachment'' to him. everyone judges her a lot for fighting for apollo, but she herself says that she just doesn't want to be alone in the world. she wants to be loved and she wants to give love, and that's not a flaw. in fact, it's a very human and real motivation.

❥ for me jacks is a difficult character to crack and i mean that as a compliment. it makes him very interesting to me. i feel as naive as evangeline when i say that he is more than he says he is, because his actions always shows more. there are all these hints throughout the book that point out who he once was, who he tried to be and failed, and how he constantly seems to be fighting a battle with himself. i don't know if my vision is partial, but all i can think about is that he tries to keep eva away from him and fails.

❥ which brings me to another point: he is much more aware of the situation between them than she is. to illustrate, we have the scene of lala's party. evangeline feels crazy jealous of jacks and blames the stones and, in addition, also uses the stones to justify the jealousy he felt. meanwhile, jacks tells her that the situation between them is not going to work out. he's aware of where the two of them are heading (dare i say since ouabh.) she tries to convince herself that there's nothing going on there, but he knows. he knows what he's feeling and he knows he can't get carried away by it.

❥  which, again, reminds me of another point! from the beginning of the book, in the first few chapters, he acts affectionately. he has a genuine interest in keeping evangeline not just alive but well. he doesn't want to put her at risk, he doesn't want her to get hurt. (interestingly, he's such an asshole to everyone else that even his friends can't believe he has this genuine interest in taking care of her. and he really does. despite that, chaos is aware, also since ouabh, how much jacks cares. he talks, on more than one occasion, about how evangeline affects jacks and could be the death of him.) we know he needs to keep her alive, but he doesn't just do that. he worries. he gets to be affectionate, he helps with luc, with marisol, he gets irritated when he learns that she has been cursed, he gets offended when evangeline suspects him, he’s jealous of apollo. he just can't help it, and we have this whole interesting construct of him trying to keep her at a distance but by the time they get to the hollow, he just doesn't want to let her go anymore. he gives in to what he wanted all the time. he seems uncertain when he tells her that she'll forget everything, and was very close to becoming the next petra and his addiction would be evangeline. for evangeline is what he really wants but cannot have.

❥ i have a few thoughts on the valor family, aurora, lysander and jacks himself, but this post might get too long. 👀

i just love jacks as a character, i think his story with evangeline is very well built and it makes perfect sense in my head. only smart people understand the depth of it 😌

What if that was the unbitten fruit? I mean, how likely is it that Jacks, a Fate, has a fated object? Not unlikely. But the only thing that makes me feel against this is the fact there are occasions when it is noted that there are multiple apples/apple cores. Maybe it multiplies lol?

● p.106/ c.13 of ouabh: "too familiar nickname"

If this doesn't support the Evangeline is the first fox/ reincarnation/ knew each in the past theory, I don't know what does. What if they knew each other and Ap*llo kept pulling some warnette level shit where he erased their memories every time.

● Last page of TBONA: After Evangeline said he doesn't know who he is, Ap*llo 'smiled wider, which seemed an odd response to her confession'

If this does not convince you that Ap*llo is Lysander I actually don't know what will. I think him smiling wider meant that he didn't think it would work, possibly because it was probably a while since he's been able to do this? I think Evangeline opening the Valory arch meant that the Valors woke up such as Honora who probably is 'in charge?' (I don't know how to word it) of her children's magic/powers. Same way that Honora removed Chaos' helm, she removed the Archer’s and mirror curse from Ap*llo and...gave him the ability to use his magic? Or made it possible. (Sorry. I have the ideas and the points but I just don't know how to word them)

LET ME TELL YOU MY THEORIES HEHE

1. Both Tiberius and Apollo were the great-great-great grandchild of Lysander Valor. It can explain why Apollo can erase Evangeline's memories. And another explanation was, to stop the war between the Great Houses, Wolfric and Honora have promised to marry their children with the descendant of every Great Houses such as Slaughterwood x Aurora, Merrywood (it might be LaLa and Dane?), Acadian (x with Lysander), etc.

2. When i see the merrywood forest and cursed forest on the acftl's map, i wonder, maybe the fox live in there.

3. Tiberius said that the last time the stones reunited, one Great House was destroyed. And he saw the ruins. Is it just me thinking the great house ruins that he mean was The Merrywood?.

There is different story between Jacks's and Tiberius's about the backstory of the destroyed great house (i assume it is the merrywood). Jacks's pov it was bcs of the Slaughterwood, meanwhile Tiberius's pov it was caused by the stones. Hmm i feel something but im not sure

A new TBONA theory

(or maybe just a thought not sure how to classify)

Okay, so I was just thinking of the end of the book (I mean, when aren’t I? Its consumed my mind since I read it) and I had a thought.

When Jacks is deciding he’s going back in time to save Evangeline, Honora Valor says that if he does Time will take something equally important and then he says that nothing is of equal value. This means that thing Time would need to take from him is Evangeline. Who was taken from him at the end? Evangeline when she lost her memory of him. (Yes, I’m slow and just connected these dots)

I’ve seen the theories of Apollo being Lysander Valor and I think it’s a great possibility if not exactly what’s going to happen. In the case it is true, I think that Time decided to take Evangeline from Jacks for messing with it and the best way for it to do that was have Apollo erase Evangeline’s memory of Jacks entirely. (or maybe Apollo’s just a big dick and im reading into too much-)

What does this mean though? It means that in acftl for Jacks to get Evangeline back he’s going to have to go against Time. Time is also probably affecting the timeline the best it can to keep Jacks from Evangeline. And I know Jacks will go against Time to get her back (he better)

I had this need to re-read a certain part of TBONA, the part where Eva dreams about the handsome stranger. When I did, it just got me thinking about what the guy said and I felt the need to try figure out who he was.

His description...

His back was to a post, hair tousled and dark brown. Evangeline’s steps faltered. From a distance, she’d thought Jacks had been cast in shadow, but now it was clear the young man at the end of the dock was not Jacks. “You’re a difficult one to track down.” The young man turned from the lake, and when she saw his face, her breath caught in her chest. She thought at first that he looked familiar, but it might just have been that he was incredibly handsome, clean-cut jaw, dark eyebrows over hypnotic eyes, and a charming smile that made her heart take an excited little tumble.

Now his description makes one think about this carefully. We can forget about Eva thinking this is Jacks because I doubt that is all too important. At most this character is of similar build and height of him. An important thing is that he knows Jacks though, so I'm guessing that he's definitely someone of Jacks' past.

This handsome stranger has dark brown hair. Which certain family that knows Jacks well has dark brown hair, the Valors. Now, we have all thrown away the possibility of Apollo being Lysander Valor but what if his importance comes in another form and that being the handsome stranger from Eva's dream. (I like how I'm just coming up with ideas while going along)

Lysander Valor's power is something "that involved memories", we all know that. But, since his powers are so ambiguous, it could also include him managing to force entry into someones dreams. (Now I don't remember if any other character has managed to do this, like Jacks and Lala, I feel like Lala has but I really don't remember much)

It's highly possible that it isn't Lysander since we don't have much of a description other than the fact that the handsome stranger has dark brown hair but it is a possibility.

Now for what he says...

“I can see why Jacks likes you. You’re a bit like her, you know?” “Like who?” Evangeline asked. The Handsome Stranger rubbed his jaw. “He wouldn’t be happy if he knew I said this, but if you’re not careful, you’ll end up like her as well.” “Like who?” Evangeline repeated. “His first fox.”

He first says that she's a bit like the first fox. I'm guessing he means features. This could pertain to her being the first fox reincarnate. If she has physical features like her, it could give us answers to why Jacks treats Eva differently to how he treated Tella. It's possible that Eva's nickname came directly from Jacks based on how there are hints of similarity between Eva and the first fox. Jacks treated Tella very horribly, often being rough and rash with her. Often kissing her without any care to her possibly dying from it (I think that with Legend's blood in her system she's safe but, otherwise, she was dying). With Eva he tries to put distance but keeps feeling a push towards her yet never tries to kiss her, does that not make you think? He cares too much for her to die, he saved her from death as well. But he's acting as he did with the Fox when he had the archer curse, not necessarily running away just for Eva to run after him but hes trying to keep away from her emotionally which is even harder... I think their saving grace from their doom could have been Apollo

The handsome stranger warned Eva, this was a warning so she felt compelled to find out what happened to the fox once and for all. Maybe he was trying to hint that the story curse could be involved and that she would be taken with death just like the first fox (which she was). Yes, Jacks had the stones and went back in time to rectify her death but that wasn't enough because something worse than death is losing track of what you have done and who you have become and Eva had memories from the past year taken away.

It was definitely a warning for her, there are many ways to interpret it as well so who genuinely knows what it means. Stephanie put this character in for a reason, maybe I went round in circles but I have a feeling that he is Lysander and he was warning Eva to be careful.

As you have said, the Handsome Stranger was indeed warning Evangeline from to Jacks to save her life because he had noticed that Jacks wasn't acting like himself and it wasn't smart to get cozy with him.

His mention of the First Fox plays a huge role in all this and gives sense to the theory that Evangeline is the first Fox reincarnated. Jacks's relationship with Evangeline didn't start off romantic. They annoyed each other. But still their relationship changed when they started having repressed feelings for each other. Because of that, Jacks keeps his distance to keep her safe from him.

If he doesn't, she'll die.

The Handsome Stranger told her that her death would destroy him, and I'm sure he doesn't want to see his friend get heartbroken all over again.

However, the Handsome Stranger does have an identity we already know. Evangeline confirmed it to be Chaos.

From TBONA pg. 315 and 369:

With all of the info we got from Jacks, it's safe to say that because Chaos went after Vengeance, life in the Magnificent North would be changed forever because of his new transformation as a vampire. Half of the reason. Evangeline recognizes Chaos in that scene with his mother, too 😊

Theories for ‚ A curse for true love‘

might contain some spoilers!! I reread the first two books and there are two main things that stood out to me and that’s what my theories are based off:

First: Dane Valor is LaLa‘s First Love.

She said „He could shift into a dragon - a large one“. Dane had the power to shift:

And it says that her love is in the Valory.

Second: Now that the Valors are back, I think LaLa will return to Danes side and obviously brake off the engagement with Robin Slaughterwood. I think he might step into Venegance Slaughterwoods footsteps and take revenge like he once did?

third: Lysander is involved in Evangeline’s memory loss or he will be the one to return her memories or both:

This may be far fetched but hear me out🫠

So we know that Chaos is actually Castor Valor who died and became an immortal Fate and Lord of assassins and spies, but what if he’s not the only Valor turned Fate? In the bonus material with the story of the Valors, it’s briefly mentioned that Lysander Valor has “a gift involving memories” so what are the chances that Apollo, who wiped Eva’s memories of Jacks and her time in the Magnificent North, is actually Lysander Valor and the Fate from the blank card in the Deck of Destiny (from Caraval)?

I really need Curse to come out already this wait is killing me😭

Has anyone else wondered if all these characters in OUABH are Valors???

We know Chaos is Castor Valor. We know that Lysander Valor is capable of manipulating memories (Apollo). Romulus Valor is clearly a name pulled from the story of Romulus and Remus where they were supposed to drown as babies in the Tiber River (Tiberius) but they survive and in the future Romulus kills his brother.

And last but not least: Jacks… He clearly states that he put Apollo under the suspended sleep and could wake him when he chooses. The book specifically says that only Honora Valor could do that, but what if her son inherited the same gift?! This would make him Tempest Valor, since the only other son is Dane who can shape-shift. ALSO, this would make him and Tiberius twins 🤯

I have a theory but it’s a little half-baked and there are a lot of alternative theories. Nonetheless, I would like to share my findings.

That first plant, the Pegasus Clover has an interesting usage. Could Apollo have used it to take Evangeline’s memories?

I recall Apollo rubbed his thumb across Evangeline’s forehead before taking them. I wonder if Pegasus Clover is just one ingredient in a memory loss potion/spell. And similar to the love spell Marisol used on Luc and Tiberius, must be smeared on the recipient’s skin to take effect.

In which case could Apollo and Marisol be in kahoots? Although I find it more believable that Apollo just has his own copy of Recipes of the Ancient North: Translated for the First Time in Five Hundred Years.

We don’t know exactly how much time has passed between Evangeline opening the Valory Arch and Apollo taking her memories. However the truth potion that she gave Tiberius didn’t take long to make.

I personally prefer the theory of Lysander Valor being somehow involved in taking Evangeline’s memories as it is an interesting way to introduce a new character. But the Pegasus Clover is definitely something to consider. And I think plants and flowers, and what they’re for, may be something to pay attention to going forward.
