. . . #aadouborg #princess #rumag #lifestyle #bcdn (bij WTC Expo) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvMoHhgDO_B/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=vopazmehrqig

I’ve always been intrigued by your ‘representation matters’ posts, and I would love to add a Christine to the list that was never mentioned previously. As I recently found out Maaike Widdershoven (alt Dutch Christine) is of dutch/indonesian decent. Apperently her mom was born in Indonesia (then dutch-indies) which makes her partly indonesian and partly dutch. Maybe stupid question but would you see this as some kind of diversity?
I frankly had no idea. Thank you for that. I looked through her Twitter, and I can see she now and then use the tag #indogirl.
Tumblr media
Whenever I use the tag “representation matters” in connection to a person, it’s because they either add some diversity to an otherwise unison cast, or they represent a minority (ethnic or otherwise) in the country they live in. I may also use the tag if someone add diversity to a role who’s typically cast in one specific way, even if the cast as such appears more diverse than usual - Lana English as Christine in South Africa is a good example of that. “Representation matters” is partly about telling aspiring performers as well as theatre newbies that yes - someone you may identify with is already performing professionally on stage, and taking on the large roles. It’s also to underline that no theatre roles should even be reserved for just caucasian performers, as has been a too dominant tradition in the past.
For these reasons I’m also inclined to use the tag in future posts about Maaike Widdershoven, for what she may represent to people with mixed heritage and/or Indonesian background.

Audio
Over the past  30 years several Dutch performers have played the role of Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, West End and Greece. To celebrate these Dutch performers, I have made a compilation audio of them singing the final part of Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again.
This is the list of Dutch Christines in order of appearance:
1. Joke de Kruijf (Vienna, Austria) 2. Joke de Kruijf (Scheveningen, The Netherlands) 3. Els Bongers (Scheveningen, The Netherlands) 4. Maaike Widdershoven (Scheveningen, The Netherlands) 5. Ineke van Klinken (Antwerp, Belgium) 6. Janine Kitzen (Stuttgart, Germany) 7. Lauri Brons (Hamburg, Germany) 8. Michelle van de Ven (Hamburg, Germany) 9. Celinde Schoenmaker (West End, UK / Athens, Greece) 10. Annemarijn Maandag (Oberhausen, Germany) 11.

Thank you for bringing to my attention that video of Nicole Scherzinger singing with 4 phantoms I have not seen that before! I literally burst out laughing when the curtain went up and the 4 of them are just standing there posing with the fog and the candles around them! But seriously this is like the fifth video I've watched of 4 phantom's singing to one Christine. Why is this such a thing? Why can't we have 4 Christine's and one phantom or hell just 4 Christine's and no Phantom!
While I’ve seen the “four Phantoms” (or more) thing done a few times before - the Toronto production’s tenth anniversary performance had five Phantoms performing different scenes in one show, and I think the tenth anniversary of the London production had perhaps an after-show with several Phantoms worldwide appearing - but the 25th anniversary concert seemed to make it really popular, with variations of it showing up for the Nicole Scherzinger performance, the Broadway production’s 25th, and the 2016 West End Live performance. But hey, at least the 30th anniversary changed it up by adding a second Christine!
I imagine that it’s done mainly because the character of the Phantom is the most notable and remembered, and their actors tend to get the most notice, so if you’re going to make a celebration, invite a bunch of them and you’re set. But Christine? Eh; Christine is nice but not that remembered, just one actress is totally fine. Maybe two, max. But no more than that, this is the Phantom of the Opera, people, not Christine of the Opera. (And Raoul who? Why would we need more Raouls? Some people think one is too many.)
This really makes me miss that one video of three Dutch Christines (Joke de Kruijf, Els Bongers, and Maaike Widdershoven) serenading a former Phantom (Henk Poort) on his birthday by singing a three-Christine rendition of ‘Music of the Night’...
