Around the time I got the Tumblr app on my phone, I started seeing the word "blorbos" being thrown around.
First time I saw it: "What's a blorbo?"
Saw it a few more times and discerned the definition through context clues: "Okay, so it's the new hot buzzword in internet slang."
So then I knew what it meant, but I didn't really care.
Then I thought about it, and I realized – I do care about blorbos.
Because I myself have blorbos. I have lots of blorbos. Star Wars blorbos, Star Trek blorbos, Firefly blorbos, Marvel blorbos, DC blorbos, POTO blorbos, blorbos from other movies and TV shows, book blorbos.....
So many blorbos.

Maaike Widdershoven singing ‘Kon Ik Nog Maar Even Bij Je Zijn’ the Dutch version of ‘Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again’ from The Phantom Of The Opera. 25 years after her last performance as Christine. Watch the full video/interview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zS6W9hT97Hc&t=570s
Reviewing more phantoms and Raouls. As usual, I’m doing both in one post.
Dmitry Ermak had a very good first lair, with a sensual motn and a very strong unmasking. He had a very nice, classic phantom voice that he made rather raspy in his more emotional scenes, which I enjoyed. He was a very...wriggly boy in stydi, I loved it. Very much enjoyed his second unmasking and final lair, he played a very tired, sad phantom who did a very good job reacting to Christine and Raoul.
I’ve said before why I like Hugh Panaro (along with a million other people) but I’ll say it again here I guess. His reputation as a “sexy phantom” is uh not unfounded. His acting really emphasizes the sensuality and underlying darkness of the character. Every aspect of his movement is clearly very well thought out. I know he’s a fan of Susan Kay’s phantom and it definitely comes across in his performance. He can also be very sassy at times, which I’m not always a huge fan of but it definitely works well with his performance.
Cooper Grodin....oh Cooper. His voice is...as others have pointed out, he sounds like he was doing some heavy drinking before performing. His acting is extremely aggressive even for the restaged tour. He barely cared about Christine and it felt like he barely cared about the show.
As with Hugh, it’s been discussed why Michael Crawford is so wonderful, aside from bringing to life the character and creating an iconic portrayal. His acting is truly something else, I suppose it helps that as the first he isn’t influenced by any other actors in the role and truly took the time to make it his own. He has a very smooth, elegant motn, with the whole thing feeling like one very long, deliberate movement with a lot of emphasis on his hands. His more distressed scenes have some very Lon Chaney vibes, with more great hands and great distressed noises. His very light voice works well with his portrayal, making him feel even more ethereal and simultaneously phantom-like and angel-like.
Marcus Lovett has a pretty rough voice. Not necessarily bad, just rough. His acting though...we love to see it. A hypnotic motn, he’s very mature, very in control, knows what he’s doing and is perfectly comfortable leading Christine around his lair. This maturity extends all throughout the show up to the final lair, when he seems old and tired. He’s certainly no man-child yet there’s a real sense of desperation.
As for Raouls...
I wasn’t too impressed with Evgeny Zaytsev at first but he significantly improved when with a decent Christine. Overall he can be relatively boring but he does have quite a few nice touches, and his final lair stands out as very good.
Jeremy Hays was there. He existed. He had a very nice voice, I just found his acting kind of boring, he didn’t do much.
Ben Jacoby came across relatively charming in Little Lotte and got progressively worse from there, culminating in him grabbing Grace Morgan’s ears and dragging her head around the rooftop like that.
Reece Holland has a hell of a voice and he knows how to use it. He has some very interesting infliction and was clearly having fun playing with the notes. He was a very earnest, very sweet Raoul who put a lot of energy into his performance.
Simon Thomas doesn’t really stand out to me in any way other than his good chemistry with Anna O’Byrne. He doesn’t really do much but he does go out of his way to be very gentle and soft with Anna’s more nervous, hysterical approach and they work well together.
Hey, I would like to know whats your Raoul appearance headcanon?
hello! ☆
that’s so hard to answer because there are so many to choose from given that the book has a million adaptations.
when i usually write though, the “raoul” i envision would vary depending on the plot and my mood.
however, i would say if i were to envision raoul (as of this moment), it would be a mix of leroux! raoul and alw! raoul. i’m leaning more on leroux’s description though.
maybe a good reference would be matt leisy from the poto world tour.
although i’ve already forgotten my impression of his raoul when i watched last year, there’s just something about him...when you look at him, he’s radiating youthfulness and playfulness (as someone should be in their 20s!).
he gives off major tom holland vibes (which is basically baby boy vibes aka leroux!raoul who’s very immature, impulsive, innocent and naïve).
he’s a pretty boy (which he was described as in the novel).
and he looks like a crybaby, if you will.
matt leisy also has blue eyes just like leroux! raoul, damn it!
throw in some blondeness and a mustache and you’ll get leroux!raoul
in a nutshell, he looks like someone you’d want to protect and put in your pocket!
2. Name a ship that you love but have conflicted feelings over.
Well I guess there’s all my dark ships, for one thing (I love Erik/Raoul for example but I can never see it being...nice) but I feel like that’s really just a very specific way of shipping. More conflicted? Ooh, maybe Jordan/Nick from The Great Gatsby. I hardcore headcanon Nick as gay and also sort of think Jordan’s a lesbian, but also their relationship in canon is just so interesting, so sometimes I imagine they might be bisexual? But really I still think Nick is gay and probably way too into Gatsby to really be into Jordan? But on the other hand they are more canonically together than Natsby is, it just feels a little...shallow? So many feelings!!
8. Name a ship that is just yours.
Mm I’m tempted to name every rarepair I have but since you’re a POTO person I’m gonna say Carlotta/Christine. I know other people out there ship it but there aren’t that many and sometimes I feel like I’m the only one out here who’s ride or die for it. I’ve written 8/11 fics for it on AO3 (speaking of which, it’s about time I wrote another, I haven’t in a couple months) and fanart is...slow. I don’t particularly mind this in some ways because there’s something nice about a ship that’s just yours? I can explore the ways I see the ship without anyone interrupting my vision, and I feel a certain sense of ownership, like they’re my characters. Which, sometimes you feel that with fanfic, sometimes you don’t.
21. Name your favorite ship from a book.
Eugenides/Attolia from the Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner might be my favorite ship of all time. Lately I’m also very fond of Kell/Holland from the Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab, though.
22. Name your favorite ship from a movie.
Eugene/Irene/Vincent from Gattaca. Right now anyway.
23. Name your favorite ship from a show.
Ooh, “show” is so broad. Currently it might be Jessica/Luke from Jessica Jones, purely because I’m on a rewatch. But it really fluctuates.
Thanks for the asks! It’s fun to talk about shipping.
