i’m playing macbeth in a couple of weeks at my local theatre, and it got me thinking a bit about the use of the term ‘partner’ in the play. banquo uses it when talking about macbeth (“my noble partner” 1.3 from what i remember off the top of my head) which establishes it as a word to describe an equal in status, regard, companionship, etc.

so, in 1.5 when lady m is reading the letter from macbeth and he calls her “my dearest partner in greatness,” it immediately establishes the power dynamic in their relationship as that of equals. i love interpretations where she pacifies him, lets him believe he has the power in the relationship, manipulates him, all that—but my interpretation based on how he refers to her is that he respects her as an equal, confides in her first of all, and relies on her for how far they’ve gotten and how far they still want to go.

Also, now that I finished Macbeth, I can say that I liked it. My chief complaint is that Lady Macbeth didn’t have enough screentime. And I’m not just saying this because she was my favorite character, I think Shakespeare missed an opportunity by glossing over her guilt and descent into madness.

just wanna say i'm currently studying macbeth in one of my classes, and your macbethposting has elevated it to one of my all time favorite lit class experiences. you are not just donmar warehouse's pr officer but shakespeare's himself. the excitement for this 400 year old play is incredibly infectious, and i've really enjoyed hearing about the choices this production made! :)

Oh that’s amazing to hear! It’s funny too because I would consider myself someone who is fairly into Shakespeare but Macbeth wasn’t a play that stuck with me when I studied it in school and this production truly even aside from DT/Cush Jumbo made it so fun. I want to meme on it all day

Macbethposting Friday anyway I am thinking about the come you spirits etc etc and just… the implications of it all. Lady Macbeth’s motivations to do the Thing aka kill Duncan aka have Macbeth be king aka be queen herself are never cleared up and only there to be built with clues. But in any case— whether self-serving or altruistic (wanting it for Macbeth not herself)— it’s something extreme.

Extreme enough to make her want to rid herself of her very nature to achieve it. She’s insane 2 me bc she’s self-aware but not self-aware enough to know that going against who she really is will end terribly. But thing is that she Knows that she, as she is, with the qualities she has Now, won’t be able to do it. She’s desperate enough to say “okay, make me able to do it then. Rid me of my nature. Make it impossible for me to prevent myself.”

Like, the Thing that makes her do it, whatever it is, has to be big enough to get her to That Level and I fear there’s too little talk of… what it could be that also makes sense.
