Stages of my relationship with blind boxes

1. Oh god, those clones are everywhere. And don't you even dare call them BJD!

2. Last spring: this Penny dragon is a copy of that cool, big Dollzone dragon that's too big for me to handle, so I should definitely grab a small one!

2. Few months later: 10,000 escape plans are cool, I'll take one, thank you. And maybe that cool red goat as well.

4. Now: got one pack from Xiaohongshu and one from Taobao, waiting for one to be sent from Modian (Electronic pets), and participating in one current crowdfunding (Nyssa). Not even mentioning two dolls from Ali who are on their way. And I just ordered one more doll. And three more. Just because they were good deals and I didn't want to regret again.

Last week my first Chinese parcel arrived.

It all started because of the Electronic pet series. My desire to get the white dog of these series and unwillingness to pay scalpers was stronger than my confusion with Chinese platforms. So I went through all the trouble of making and filling up Alipay account, and signing up on Modian. Some people tried to scare me by saying that only Chinese citizens can order from Modian, but it's not like that at all. Although, I was a bit late for the all-in, so I ordered just a pack of six. Still waiting for them to be shipped. I could have already received a basic pack, but I didn't want to make two parcels for them (because they can't ship bonuses yet). They supposedly should ship in March.

It's not so scary as it seemed, after all. The worst part is that everything is in Chinese (circle to search is a saviour). I'm still worried about getting banned on Tao since my previous account was banned for no reason (though there weren't any purchases on it).

Got Minty fantasy forest pack and one outfit from COME4FREE shop on Xiaohongshu. It was unexpected for me that they put six cute headbands as a gift. That's sweet of them. Also got Penny's box magic beasts from Tao. It was right before Chinese New year, so I had nice coupons for all. Penny's small gift is a cute badge.

Ordered whole packs because I liked the series overall, but wasn't sure which doll in particular to get. And I also hoped for a chance at secret ones. Well, I've never even once won a lottery, so this time was no exception. Not that I'm surprised, but still, a little frustrated. I had hope till the very last box.

Keeping a cat and a squirrel. The rest will go. Never sold anything before, but I'll try.

Of all the blind box dolls I have, penny are the best. They pose well, nothing falls off or looks like it will break if squeezed slightly stronger. And I really like hip joints of magic beasts series.

Minty are cute and make cute poses. I took the wire out right after taking dolls out of the box because 1. it would break sooner or later, 2. it stains. Also I can't make the squirrel stand, her head is way too heavy.

What do you do to increase the joy and happiness you feel each day? I have always thought it is more helpful to ask myself that question instead of thinking about "stress reduction" or "stress management". Put the focus on increasing the positive instead of decreasing the negative. Doesn't that make it feel easier to accomplish? And like something you want to do? --- This week I've been in a bad flare triggered by the insane final push I had to do for my 2nd cookbook. I crashed *hard* after mailing the manuscript back with my final edits, and spent most of the week horizontal with massive brain fog, migraines (some with auras that took up my whole field of vision), and deep fatigue. But the way I chose to find joy and happiness in the moments where I could was photographing my cats with my new gear. I upgraded from APS-C to full frame mirrorless with the Sony a7iii and the 90mm f/2.8 macro lens. And snapping these shots made my heart sing. Made me smile and laugh. Helped me find contentment despite dealing with unpleasant physical symptoms. And that's what matters - remembering to do things every day that bring you pleasure. It's life-changing when you're dealing with a difficult health situation, I promise. --- So tell me - what are those things for you? Krikket from Nerd Girl Thoughts shared the idea for the “Give Back to an Indie Developer” blogging challenge. I love the idea and immediately went to take a look at Itch.io. It was difficult to decide for one game as several caught my interest.

I decided to give “Codemancer” a try. A game that is aimed at children and youths (aged 6 to 12). It’s a story-based game with the goal of teaching you how to code. The game costs $10, but at the time of writing this, it’s free. It is also available on Steam, but not on sale there at the moment.

“Codemancer brings the mystery of magic and the exhilaration of learning to code together in a fantasy universe that uses spell casting as a way to teach and learn programming skills.”

The surrounding story is about a girl who starts her first day at a wizard school where she’s learning how to become a codemancer. There, she gets a familiar (a choice between a cat, a dog or a bird) which she’ll give commands to in order to move through the map made of hexagonal fields. This is done by selecting commands in advance from start to end. At some point, her father gets abducted and she has to go save him.

You start by entering simple commands like “jump”, “turn right”, “jump” to get where you want to go. You can also repeat sequences (“jump”, “turn right”, “jump”, “turn right”) or repeat a single command several times (“jump” x5). For me as an adult, it’s very easy, of course. And then there’s repeat inside another repeat. I’d describe it as teaching kids how coding algorithms work. The debugging part works because you can see your character and her familiar move while the sequence is running on the right side of the screen. So you get a visual feedback where the sequence isn’t working – e. g., the character is jumping outside of the map because you forgot to turn her right again before letting her jump. You can do runs of your commands whenever you wish as there is no failure when it’s not working. This is good because it saves children from becoming too frustrated and giving up.

I assume it’s too difficult for your average 6-year old. Then again, the repeat sequences aren’t needed. A kid can just use one command after the other: Jump, jump, turn right, turn right,… – with some help, this should also work with younger children then. So, no matter the kid’s age, even if they juse every command one after the other, they will succeed.

The story is very kid-friendly as the things they attack aren’t living beings, but rather inanimate objects conjured by other codemancers. This is said at the very beginning and the character expresses her joy as she can then smash them without a bad conscience.

Being a psychologist in the educational sector, I always love finding educational games that don’t look or feel like an educational game immediately… the kind that seems to be educational first, game second. Everything here voiced, so the kids can listen and don’t need to read. The voice-over is very well done and the main character is quite loveable. It may become a bit too repetitive at some point, but the story keeps the player engaged. It’s definitely a game I would recommend to families with children in the appropriate age… or even to adults. I played it, too, after all!
