Secolul XIX. Poetul X iese din tavernă la braţ cu două madame. Chiar la intrare e întins în bîltoacă un om beat tuflă.

Madamele îl abordează pe poet: „O, domnule X, am auzit despre tine că poţi descrie orice situaţie poetic, prin cuvinte frumoase. Arată-ne această artă! Rugăm, rugăm, rugăm!”

X stă un pic pe gînduri şi spune:

„În calea vieţii noastre e lungit

Un jalnic corp, un neînsufleţit!

Nici voi, nici tu, nici eu nu l-am ştiut.

El zace-aici, uitat de toţi şi ud.”

Beatul, ridicîndi-şi brusc capul din bîltoacă:

„A, tu eşti, X?! Eu rima ţi-o aud!

Dar jalnic nu sînt eu acum, ci tu!

Ciudatule, mă miri! Ce-ţi pasă ţie?

Ai două mîndre, dar te rozi cu mine!”

X, îndemnînd în grabă: „Haideţi, haideţi, madamelor. Acesta e Y – colegul.”
