TRACK 28: bad hair day
guitarist!jisung x reader
a/n: here’s the shittiest written chunk of this fic i could muster, i had exactly 0 time to write it but i’m not letting myself disappear for another year😭 also ignore the pink colour changes
album tracklist
he’s here because of course he is. all tough and angsty in his cutesy apron, decorated with pink and purple icing smears, notably NOT having a bad hair day.
it probably isn’t the best idea to go up to him, he looks busy pretending to busy. it must be hard work to organize a croissant display case that has already been organized, the kind of hard work that needed solitary conditions to complete. it’ll be rude to talk to him and take him away from that, you should probably go the other way.
you need bread though, maybe you could run in and out of the bakery aisle without being noticed. you trace the word bread on the inside of your wrist, making note of its absence for later before deciding to grab it now anyway.
you take a step towards the bread and he starts turns like he’s felt your stare the entire time.
“hey, did you need help finding something-“ jisung asks in his not-so customer service voice which is just his normal voice but flatter and not dripping in artificial charm.
you startle at his attention and he smiles, though it only takes him a couple seconds to fight it off his face.
“oh- hi,” his voice goes high and he contorts back into himself, clearing his throat, “hey, um hi.”
“hi,” you laugh at how awkward he’s being despite suffering the same fate. you gently hit your shopping basket against your thighs as you wait for either of you to say something else.
neither of you were sure how to approach this, was he still your friend even after how things ended with renjun? should you just walk away? slap him?
“how have you been?” you ask, reaching up to your hair to let the psychological warfare begin, “you know, besides the bad hair day.”
“the ba-“ he mutters your words back to himself and self consciously ruffles his bangs though every strand seemingly ends up back in the same spot, “i’ve been okay, just work and band stuff.”
“cool, cool,” you take a whistling breath in through your teeth and wonder how to get out of this situation now that you’ve done what renjun asked.
“it’s really not” he laughs and places the pastry tongs down, “wanna see if i can grab you something free from the back?”
“sure, yeah,” this will give you a chance to overcome this obstacle and grab the bread, “if that’s fine for you to do.”
“of course,” jisung fixes his hair again and walks backwards into a display, he saves the moment with a goofy laugh, “i’ll be right back.”
you nod back and watch as he quickly swings around the counter, his hand lingers on the brick wall that separates the grocery store bakery from the general public’s line of sight. you lunge (walk leisurely) towards the bread, it doesn’t take long to grab the loaf you want so you’re left waiting. for jisung. which is insanely embarrassing and maybe even blasphemous?
his entrance back into your line of sight is considerably less theatrical than his departure. he lazes with his shoulder leaning against the wall, one hand behind his back, the other waving you over.
“a bit to the left,” he says when you’re near him, using his free hand to press against your shoulder and guide you closer to the wall, “this is a blind spot for the cameras.”
“right. very inconspicuous of you,” you joke but lean further into the wall, as if you aren’t in an open plan store with atleast 5 people within 20ft of you.
“very,” he smiles back and shifts so he’s standing up straight, “wanna see a magic trick?”
“as long as it is ends in me getting free food.”
“hold still,” he instructs, reaching the hand he’s been keeping behind his back out straight. he’s clearly ‘hiding’ something behind his index and middle finger but for the sake of the trick you pretend not to notice.
“huh, what’s this? you’ve got something behind your ear?” he says, unable to even take himself seriously.
“skip the foreplay,” you laugh and he playfully glares back.
you can feel his fingers lightly graze over your cheek as they move to gather your hair out of your face to tuck it behind your ear. as he pulls his hand back he lets the treat roll between his fingers so he’s holding it out in front of you.
“i hope you like sugar cookie rejects,” you take the cookie from him and take a bite, some of the baby blue icing crumbling onto the ground.
“i do, thanks.”
you both stand there as you eat your cookie, personally you think he should be holding the conversation right now but he’s just looking at you smiling. it’s honestly getting embarrassing how much he’s smiling, for him, obviously.
“stop looking so happy to see me,” you tease, trying to ease the one-sided tension, “it’s weird.”
“but i am happy to see you,” why does he sound genuine? somethings seriously not right. evil energy everywhere, you need to call donghyuck to do a deep cleanse, “i didnt know if you were going to talk to me again, you know after the- thing.”
“you didn’t try to reach out,” you look down at your shoes.
“would you have answered?”
“no,” you look up again into his eyes, they look a bit sad, which, pathetically, makes you feel bad for him, “but i can be worn down.”
“i don’t want to wear you down princess.”
“don’t call me that,” your usual sternness coming out in a playful whine, which, on the bright side, manages to lighten his mood.
he opens his mouth to say something but stops when he sees someone over your shoulder, “uhhh so yeah, a pack of 12 cookies would be $6.50.”
you got the memo quick as he makes his way back through the divide into the bakery where he leans over the counter to talk with you.
“which ones are your favorite?” you play along and duck down to look at the different cookies in the display case, which happen to unluckily be very minimal.
“i like the chocolate- okay she’s gone,” jisung instantly deflates into the counter, his head resting on top of his hands as he looks up at you.
“your boss?”
“just my manager, but she’s been on my ass lately because i don’t ’take this job seriously’ or whatever.”
“and she’d be right.”
“yeah well-“ he pouts, his cheeks puffing out a little, “she doesn’t need to know that.”
“i hope music works out for you, man.”
“you’re an asshole,” he lifts himself up from the counter and wipes some of the dried icing off his apron, “but thanks.”
a squeak of shoes behind you makes you startle and hit your basket against the display case accidently.
you smile politely at the man waiting behind you before returning your gaze to jisung, “i should go.”
he’s frowning but it fades with a shake of his head, “oh- yeah, alright,” he mutters like he’s clicking back into reality. it almost makes you feel guilty.
you take a step back ready to leave and never look back.
but you cave.
“we should hang out soon,” he lights up again and nods along with you, “you promised me guitar lessons right?”
“yeah- yeah i did,” he smiles so brightly, “see you later princess.”

Oh! Lover Boy... | P. JM
Tumblr media
Pairing: DanceTeacher!Jimin x DanceStudent!Reader
Words: 2.876 words
Warnings: slightly suggestive, and highly inspired by one of the dirty dancing scenes...
💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋
When you signed up to the dance class, you expected a class full of old ladies, dressed up in leggings, and their white hairs... The teacher, as well, but what you've found it was a very positive surprise.
The class it was actually pretty empty, it seems that the "cha cha cha", it's not the most popular among...well, everyone. And at the end, it seems that you are the only one taking the classes, and honestly? It ended up by being the best thing it could've happen, once your teacher it's the most attractive men you've ever seen it.
Park Jimin had a surreal type of beauty. Perfect skin, kind eyes, full lips, besides he's dancer type of body, that it looked really good in those jeans and black sleeveless tank top he was wearing. With a blankly mind, you convinced yourself that he was in fact some type of fairy, elf or warlock, that puted you under some kinda of magic spell.
And you definitely kept on going to the classes, and he kept on teaching you. Jimin's eyes always lighted up whenever he saw you walking through the door, since you were the only one to appear after a long time. But his eyes kept on shining everytime he saw you (even if it were one of those coincidental situations, like when you've met at the convenience store), and it was almost impossible not to feel thrilled or excited with him.
Slowly his classes started to take much longer to end, more than the necessary, both of you started to see each other after class, and texting... since you realized, you were in a relationship more than "teacher -student"
"No, no Jimin!" You said copying his voice tone when you first started taking classes "space. This is my space..." but the Brunet boy kept on holding your body against his, pressing his nose on your neck, moving at the rithm of the music blasting.
"C'mon!" You said, detaching from his body at the maxim of five seconds, before Park came back and hug you once again. His perfume it was intoxicating, and you didn't resisted passing your hands through his hair, while he done the same with your body, kissing your skin.
After pulling apart once again, he threw himself on the floor as an dramatic act, and then settling himself, watching while you kept on dancing.
"Sylvia!" He mimics the music "Love is Strange", laughing and you keep without looking at him, but following along "yes Mickey", bitting his lips he keep on going "How do you call your lover boy?"
On a full act, you pass behind one of those changing tables, "come here, lover boy!"bJimin get on his knees while you walk forward his direction, still acting "And if he doesn't answer?"
"Oh lover boy..." You do the best face impressions impossible following along the music, calling him with your index finger. Jim crawls unto you, and still on his knees he stop infront of your feet "And if he still doesn't answer?" of course his hands were already on your hips one more time, trailing kisses on your belly, exposed by the shirt you tugged sonit wouldn't bother you. He loved.
"I simply say: Baby, oh baby My sweet baby, you're the one!"
Once you done singing along with Sylvia, Jimin doesn't waist time and pull you for a a very intense kiss. A very jimin-tense type of kiss. Laying your body on the floor, with his own above yours, his face on your neck, Park trail more kisses and say:
"You should call me baby... sweet baby..." smiling you lift his head, using your index finger under his chin, making him look at you when you say "my sweet, sweet baby. You are the one!".

short stop.
Tumblr media
hi, friends! after testing the waters with a few close pals, i’ve decided to share this because i enjoyed writing it. it is a small chunk of something bigger i’ve been working on, but it’s able to stand on its own (in my opinion, anyway) and i love how soft it is. so i’m sharing! i hope you like it.
joe mazzello x reader ; 1379 words ; beyond fluffy, sexual themes mentioned, mild swearing
“I wish I was a little bit more put together for this moment.” You admitted, running your fingers through the tangles of your hair. “Not that your Goonies Tee, my wet dog hair, and the lucky Mazzello undies aren’t doing it for me.”
Joe quirked an eyebrow and his hands went to the hem of his shirt that you were wearing, lifting it up just enough to see if you were a woman of your word. His face was plastered with a toothy grin once he saw that you were, in fact, wearing the lucky Mazzello underwear.
Before you’d become a couple, Joe invited you to a Yankees Baseball Game. He knew how much of a fan you were, and was delighted to be able to share something in common with you. He was sorely disappointed when you emerged from the subway in every day clothes and a Yankees cap. He knew deep down that a girl who wore her team around her neck was a diehard, and he wasn’t buying this innocent fan act that you were putting on for him.
You considered yourself moderately crazy. You had several wardrobe pieces, including official jerseys and sweatshirts. You had the score sent to your phone, and always kept up with stats and any news about the team. You could handle rabid baseball fans; your brothers and father were as crazy as you’d seen up until this point in your life. That was until you’d met Joe, of course. His devotion to his team only made him more attractive to you. You’d only been on a few casual dates, but if this were to ever turn into anything, you’d be eager to see that passion in other aspects of Joe’s life.
To say the game itself was an absolute shit show was an understatement. You sat there and watched as your beloved New York Yankees were being completely annihilated. Luckily for you, Joe’s company was cushioning the loss tremendously, and you were hoping that he felt the same about you. You enjoyed pleasant conversation about your team, and shared ballpark snacks over a couple of beers. When it was Joe’s turn to grab a snack and a round of beers, you were beyond pleased when he returned with a batter’s helmet full of chicken fingers and fries.
“Got you something else while I was up.” Joe stated with a mouthful.
Both of your hands were nursing your beer, intensely watching the game. When you hummed in response, Joe set a small package in your lap. You set your drink down to examine it closely, realizing that this son of a bitch had been bold enough to purchase you a pair of cheeky briefs with the New York Yankees emblem on the front. You squinted your eyes to read Joe’s scribbled note.
_“Maybe if the team scores, I will too. - JM” _
You felt your cheeks become red hot and you tried to play it off, but Joe was none the wiser.
“Too much?” he asked coyly, crossing his legs.
You were still quite dumbfounded by Joe’s advanced actions, because no one in your life had ever made such a valiant attempt to flirt with you. Also, you had to admit it: it was incredibly clever. You let your fingers run over Joe’s handwriting, examining the way Joe wrote his initials in a sleek cursive.
You set the package back down and grabbed your beer. You took a long sip before finally speaking. “Which player is your favorite?”
Joe let a pregnant pause permeate the space between you before he awkwardly rung his hands together. He was convinced he’d struck out with your apparent attempt to change the subject.
“Currently or of All-Time?”
“Currently. I don’t need a magnifying glass to know you’d die for Donny Baseball.”
Joe smirked, impressed by the fact that you’d been paying attention to him, even if you denied his advances to sleep with him.
“Didi. Why?” Joe crossed his arms and sat back in his chair.
You shrugged playfully, taking another sip of your beer. “I think that if Didi Gregorius can score before the night is over, that I just may be able to make an exception - just this one time, of course - and allow you to also score.”
“Fuck -“ Joe sat up in his seat and leaned towards you. “Come again?”
“That’s an advanced question. I suppose the fate of that rests entirely in Didi’s hands.” You took another nonchalant sip of your beer while you watched Joe practically squirm in his cushy seat. “And here I was satisfied with the thought of just once.”
“Home run? Or does he just have to cross the plate?” Joe’s voice was somewhat strangled as he inquired about the fine print of your arrangement. To say that you were positively giddy to have taken the upper hand in this situation was an understatement.
“I’m not a cruel woman, Mazzello. A run’ll do just fine.” Your voice was smug and Joe had undoubtedly caught on by now. “The man has an at-bat or two left with how things are going… It’s achievable.”
“_Fuck righ_t, it is! My man’ll get the job done for me. I’m sure of it.” Joe reached to relax his arm around the back of your seat, a delighted smirk tugging his lips upward. You leaned into his gesture and continued to sip your beer, your free hand admiring Joe’s penmanship.
As the rest of the game played out, the biggest Yankees fan you’d ever known had nearly abandoned ship on his team. He didn’t necessarily care about the Yankees losing, for probably one of the only times in his life; he just needed Didi to score a damn run. Unfortunately, the Bronx Bombers were not victorious, but they nearly were - thanks to Didi Gregorius. The shortstop came close to evening the score with an impressive grand slam in the bottom of the 8th inning, with two outs.
When Didi’s bat made contact with the ball, both you and Joe shot up from your seats, watching intently to see if the ball would land in fair territory in the outfield stands. When it did and the patrons around you clamored in excitement at the rally, you both reached for each other to draw the other into a heated kiss. You knew the possibility of it happening was very strong - Didi Gregorius was a good ball player. But the intensity and thrill was enough for a celebratory make-out session that would continue throughout last out and until most of the crowd around you cleared out.
“I will make you come four times.” Joe mumbled against your lips during a sloppy kiss. “One for each RBI the bastard earned.”
You desperately wanted to card your fingers through Joe’s hair, but you settled on toying with the ends that poked out from his hat. “I’d be satisfied with just the two times I’d decided on at the start of the wager.”
Joe somehow managed to coax five orgasms from you before dawn, and god damnit, was every single one incredible. You’d stayed the night at his place, waking in your new pair of underwear. They fit perfectly and they would make you feel invincible throughout the years. Joe always lingered a bit when you wore them, because all of his favorite things existed in harmony at the same place and time.
“I don’t know how these manage to look fresh, out-of-the-package new every time you wear them.” Joe stated, his hands reaching to paw at the bits of flesh that weren’t covered by the thin fabric.
“It’s the voodoo magic behind them, baby. Don’t question it.” You grinned before pressing playful kisses along Joe’s jaw.
“Me? Question the magic behind such an enchanted pair of panties? I could never.” Joe gave your ass a playful smack and sighed.
Joe tucked a piece of hair behind your ear and squinted. “Man. I put in fifteen years at Catholic School, only to grow up and believe in our lord and savior, New York Yankees Shortstop, Didi Gregorius.”
“You’re crazy.” You snorted.
“About you.” His response was immediate and it had your cheeks flushing just as they would when you were getting to know Joe.

For the week of 18 February 2019
Quick Bits:
Aquaman #45 gives us a new creation story with Father Sea and Mother Salt. It’s interesting world-building for what’s going on on this island. Robson Rocha, Daniel Henriques, and Sunny Gho seem to level up on their art again. This book is gorgeous.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Avengers #15 continues the vampire civil war, with the Shadow Colonel basically kidnapping Ghost Rider. Jason Aaron is definitely taking this series in weird places, but it remains highly entertaining. Especially with collaborators like David Marquez and Erick Arciniega who deliver some incredible artwork.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Avengers: No Road Home #2 reveals how Nyx and her family took Olympus. There’s also a neat parallel narration for Hawkeye explaining how the guy with just a bow and arrows can take on gods and monsters. The art from Paco Medina, Juan Vlasco, and Jesus Aburtov is gorgeous, they really seem to pushing themselves with their storytelling. It’s just a shame that none of the artists are credited on the cover.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Barbarella/Dejah Thoris #2 is ridiculously impressive. Leah Williams, Germán García, Addison Duke, and Crank! are delivering an intelligent, humorous, and compelling adventure tale here that reminds me a lot of some of what Alan Moore and Chris Sprouse did in Tom Strong. It’s incredibly inventive and the artwork is amazing. Highly recommended.
| Published by Dynamite
Tumblr media
Batman #65 gives us the penultimate chapter of “The Price”, featuring an all out battle between Flash, Gotham Girl, and Gotham. The artwork from Guillem March and Tomeu Morey is stunning, with some incredible layouts as the action continues.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Black Widow #2 is fairly bloody and violent as Natasha racks up a body count tracking down the people running “No Restraints Play”, a site that specializes in depravity. Flaviano’s line art seems scratchier than the first issue, but it works for the violent tone of story.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Bloodborne #9 begins the third arc, “A Song of Crows”, as Aleš Kot, Piotr Kowalski, Brad Simpson, Aditya Bidikar, and Jim Campbell spotlight Eileen the Crow. This is a bit of return to the kind of abstract storytelling and embrace of oblique existentialism of the first arc as Eileen investigates the ritual murder of a hunter, but is confounded by time and holes in the narrative.
| Published by Titan
Tumblr media
Catwoman #8 is ostensibly the “conclusion” to “Something Smells Fishy”, but it doesn’t actually end the story in any way and leaves the reader at a cliffhanger of continuing elements. That being said, it’s still an entertaining issue from Joëlle Jones, Elena Casagrande, Fernando Blanco, John Kalisz, and Josh Reed. Wonderful action sequences, and more questions as to the nature of a reliquary that seems to contain resurrective powers.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Delver #1 begins a new Comixology Original series from MK Reed, C. Spike Trotman, Clive Hawken, Maarta Laiho, and Ed Dukeshire. It’s a very intriguing and unique take on the fantasy gaming theme of a dungeon full of treasure and monsters with delvers working to plumb the depths. But it’s from the perspective of the townsfolk whose land the door to the dungeon appears in and how it changes and impacts their lives.
| Published by Iron Circus Comics
Tumblr media
Doctor Strange #11 concludes the battle with Dormammu and the Faltine, for now at least, from Mark Waid, Jesús Saiz, Javier Pina, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Cory Petit. Some very nice art as usual from Saiz, Pina, and Rosenberg.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #3 continues “Mother of Exiles” from Tom Taylor, Juann Cabal, Nolan Woodard, and Travis Lanham as Peter finds out a bit about the rumours regarding his neighbour and Under York, another duplicate New York City under New York City, that oddly isn’t the Monster Metropolis. Great humour from Taylor in the dialogue.
| Published by Marvel

Guardians of the Galaxy #2 takes a somewhat different approach as Peter Quill drunk dials Kitty as he tries to make sense of what’s going on with Thanos, Gamora, everyone who’s dead, and the current state of the Guardians. Donny Cates, Geoff Shaw, Marte Gracia, and Cory Petit are really taking this series into interesting offbeat territory, while still delivering some excellent humour and an ominous feel to Starfox’s new band of “guardians”.

Incursion #1 begins a new mini picking up on where the Eternal Warrior and Geomancer are since Harbinger Wars 2 and Ninja-K, and pit them against Imperatrix Virago, a cosmic villain that is devouring worlds (kind of like if Galactus were pestilence), from Andy Diggle, Alex Paknadel, Doug Braithwaite, José Villarrubia, Diego Rodriguez, and Marshall Dillon. The art is incredible, the stakes seem pretty high, and the outlook after this first issue look pretty grim for Earth.

James Bond 007 #4 sees Stephen Mooney join Greg Pak, Tríona Farrell, and Ariana Maher for the art chores for three issues, continuing the tale of Bond and “Oddjob”’s team-up. Like Marc Laming, Mooney seems to be born to draw Bond and espionage themed stories.

Judge Dredd: Toxic #4 concludes what has been an excellent series dealing with xenophobia and hateful rhetoric from Paul Jenkins, Marco Castiello, Vincenzo Acunzo, Jason Millet, Shawn Lee, and Robbie Robbins. I’ve always found non 2000 AD Judge Dredd stories to be a bit of crapshoot, but IDW have been delivering well with the past two mini-series, this and Under Siege.

Justice League #18 is the latest excursion into the Legion of Doom territory from James Tynion IV, Pasqual Ferry, Hi-Fi, and Tom Napolitano. It works with some of the revelations from last issue regarding Martian Manhunter and builds a new narrative for Lionel Luthor’s past and his work with Vandal Savage. It’s interesting to see Tynion working with variations on discarded continuities in this way, building a new past that synthesizes pre-Flashpoint ideas with the current batch of backstories.

Middlewest #4 only seems to be getting better and better as more of this world and how it seems to work get fleshed out by Skottie Young, Jorge Corona, Jean-Francois Beaulieu, and Nate Piekos. There’s something incredibly magical and special about this series that taps into the feeling of some of the best coming-of-age fantasies as it blends Ray Bradbury, JM Barrie, and Carlo Collodi into this magical realist adventure.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #3 concludes the opening arc from Saladin Ahmed, Javier Garrón, David Curiel, and Cory Petit by adding Captain America to Miles & Rhino’s team-up. This has been a very entertaining start to the series, with a nice mix of Miles’ personal life and superheroics.

Naomi #2 reasserts that Jamal Campbell is a powerhouse of an artist and one of the best kept secrets of the past few years who really should have a higher profile. His art is amazing. It also helps that the story he, Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker, and Carlos M. Mangual are telling is as compelling as this, as Naomi confronts Dee as she tries to learn about the day of her adoption. It’s very widescreen and epic as it hints at the broader DC Universe, but at the same time this is very deeply personal.

Old Man Quill #2 gives the Guardians a taste of the depravity and despair that Earth has fallen to in this post-superhero world. Ethan Sacks shows there’s still a bit of humour left, though, in that Piledriver’s descendent thinks that Piledriver was one of the all-time greats. Also the art from Robert Gill and Andres Mossa gives a wonderful amount of detail to the wastelands.

Relay #4 returns after a delay with new artist Dalibor Talajić (I believe Andy Clarke had to bow out due to illness, but I’m not 100% sure on that). Talajić’s art style is not as bright and clean as Clarke’s, giving a darker, shadowy approach that results in the bleak, horror elements of the story coming further into focus.

Seven to Eternity #13 returns from its own lengthy delay to conclude the arc in Skod, with the revelation of part of Adam’s choice to save the Mud King. It reiterates the theme since the beginning that there seem to be no good choices in this world, that everything tainted, despite Adam’s father believing the world black and white. While we are going into another trade break, Rick Remender, Jerome Opeña, Matt Hollingsworth, and Rus Wooton consistently make this worth the wait.

Sharkey: The Bounty Hunter #1 is the latest of Mark Millar’s Netflix feeder series, after The Magic Order and Prodigy, with Simone Bianchi and Peter Doherty rounding out the team. This one feels a bit like if Warren Ellis were writing Strontium Dog, and it works. The artwork from Bianchi is worth it on its own. Gorgeous character designs.

Venom #11 is another holy crap issue from Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, Joshua Cassara, JP Mayer, Frank Martin, and Clayton Cowles. There are some really big revelations about Eddie and his family that really need to be read firsthand. Amazing work.

X-O Manowar #24 reminds us again just how good of an artist and storyteller Tomás Giorello is. The action sequences and battle between Aric and Hesnid is incredible, with fairly inventive layouts that just elevate the overall impact of the pages. Giorello and Diego Rodriguez really make this something joyous to behold.

Moriarty x Reader | Always Take The Shot | Part 2 FINAL
Tumblr media
READ THIS FIRST:
YOU GUYS! I can’t effin believe how much love i’ve gotten from this thank you! So ye this is the last part (i know...) BUT, the lovely @magpiesandmurder have taken the theme and basis and turned it into a hopefully ongoing story! Which you can check out HERE  (it’s super amazing)
PART 1
Later
You went over the photos you took of the supposed ‘Richard Brooke’ You smiled at how naive you must’ve acted. He was so photogenic, gorgeous. You put them down and ran into your room. You paused.
You were looking at yourself in the mirror, pondering on what to wear. It was only 5 PM but you still were worried you wouldn’t have enough time. You pulled open your wardrobe and sifted through your clothes. Pulling out different outfits but still nothing excited you:
“Should I go out and buy something new for tonight?” You mumbled to yourself. “Why on earth did I say yes?” You asked yourself quietly. Staring at yourself in the mirror.
Although, you did know why. Your love life had been put on hiatus for far too many months and Sherlock and Lestrade had kept you far too busy for any sort of relationship. You didn't mind most of the time but you felt the sense of dread to coming home to an empty apartment. Seeing your empty studio. You yearned for someone to be waiting for you. You wanted a muse. You really enjoyed taking photos of Moriarty. And you were excited for tonight. (But you wouldn't tell yourself that)
You went to go and grab your purse until you heard the letterbox go and something dropped through. You tilted your head outside from your bedroom and saw a package. You ran up to it and ripped it open.
It was a *outfit of choice* . You gasped, grinning. A small black letter fell out too. You picked it up and opened the black envelope. It read the address of the venue. Luckily you had heard of it, it was at a very prestigious and posh hotel, something you weren't used to. You received another text.
I hope you like what my stylist chose for you tonight x
JM
You smiled and texted back:
See you at 8 x
(Y/i)
You continued to get ready and ordered a taxi to pick you up at 7 PM. You looked at yourself in the mirror one last time as you could hear the beep of the taxi’s horn. You grabbed your coat. Pulling it close as you went down the stairs and out the front door. You gave a quick smile to the taxi man as you got in. You told him the address and he started the journey. You got another text.
Got anything on the Moriarty case?
SH
Your heart started to beat a little faster, the fact that you were meeting Moriarty at 8 PM and not for business reasons scared you. You texted back, fingers shaking a bit as you did.
Nope, none yet, I’m out tonight. I won’t be able to reply.
(Y/I)
You put your phone away now. Not wanting to talk to Sherlock anymore and focus on the night. You tried to relax in your seat and looked out the window, breathing heavy. You were slightly nervous.
You walked into the hotel, being directed to the elevator, to the very top floor. You shifted awkwardly in the hotel elevator, the people who got on with you looked so posh, so refined. You felt as if you were in a movie. The room the elevator opened to was decorated in a very art deco style. It was breathtaking...
You looked around at all the very well dressed guests, going on your tiptoes a little. More importantly you looked around for Moriarty, but trying not to seem like you were lost as people were staring. You half hoped it was how good you looked. You walked up to the open bar, nervous still and turning your head trying to look for him, you waited to see his smirk and deceiving eyes. Then you felt an arm wrap around your waist, gently. You turned your head and there he was. Those deceiving eyes.
“Right on time. I'll have a whiskey and for my darling here a…” He said to the barman. He looked so gorgeous, his suit was sharper than ever. He looked back at you. You felt relaxed again in his presence.
“Uh… Just a red wine please.” You said smiling. Moriarty let go of you and paid the bartender, taking your drinks to a more secluded spot when you got them.
“You look absolutely amazing tonight, Y/N…” Moriarty purred, grinning. You got a much better look at him now. “How does it feel to dine with one of Britain's most notorious serial killers?” He asked, taking your hand in his. Your cheeks heated up once again. You looked down at his hands. They looked so large compared to your small ones. You looked at the
You knew that Moriarty isn’t a good person, that the devil himself hid behind those eyes. Yet you still felt so different and wonderful around him. So you looked away, scared almost.
“To be completely fair, I didn't expect it. But… Why would you take me out? I'm just a photographer, really nothing special.” You said, you admitted it sounded a little cliche. Being a photographer wasn't really the norm. He leaned forward.
“You intrigue me. You intrigued me from the first time you took the camera away from your eyes. It's not normal for me to feel this way.” He said a smirk forming. “And we both know you work with Sherlock and I suppose I work against him.” He continued.
“You could call this night a test if you will.” He added, letting go of your hands and sipping on his whiskey. Your eyebrows perked up.
“Well.” You started, Almost sipping all of the rest of your wine. He grinned as you did. “Let the test begin.” You smirked this time, you liked a good challenge. You stood up boldly. Moriarty put his hand on the small of your back, walking you over to some of his friends and colleagues.
“Evening Moriarty.” An older looking man said. “And you might be?” He continued, looking to you. Moriarty was about to speak for you, but you butted in a little, stepping forward.
“Y/N. Pleasure to meet you.” You gleamed. His other colleagues really were taken aback at how confident you were. They looked over to Moriarty, worried he’d not approve. But he just grinned. Taking the hand off your back, he knew you could lead the conversation.
The two of you started small talk and how the two of you met. You really quite impressed Moriarty’s colleagues, making them laugh and engaging in conversations about your photography, creating a new fake life with Moriarty. When they were all distracted, Moriarty whispered gently into your ear.
“Care for a dance?” He asked. You chuckled and took his hand, he pulled you up. He pulled you close.
“I’d thought you'd never ask, or think you could.” You said as he walked you over to the center. One of his eyebrows perked.
“Of course I can, a gentleman must know how to dance.” He said, he put one hand on your waist and the other on your other hand. The new song started and the two of you waltzed around the room, along with the other couples too. You both looked like a dream together. You thought that it was possibly a twisted dream but still beautiful.
You felt like the two of you were the only two people in the room, you felt like royalty when you were with him. His eyes never leaving yours, the both of them, E/C against his brown, searching and wondering what the other was thinking. Wanting to know more about the other. He spun you around and pulled you close at the end when the song finished. You also hadn't realized that everyone was applauding the two of you. You laughed, embarrassed and hid your head in the crane of his neck, he held you closer. He led you back to an empty table.
“I can't believe I just did that! I've never waltzed in my life. Well certainly not in front of a crowd!” You said excitedly, Moriarty laughed and smiled at how proud you were of yourself.
“You did great, although you couldn't keep up.” He said, you fake pouted and gently kicked him under the table. One of his eyebrows raised and he lightly kicked you back. The two of you were acting like school children almost. Until you raised the trouser leg of his with your foot, slowly. You noticed a change in expression as he smirked, a sense of flirtation between the two of you now.
“Now Y/N, stop these games. You'll make me fall for you harder if you carry on.” He said very quickly. You stopped. Blushed at his remark and a waiter walked up to the two of you. Moriarty ordered you the most expensive things he could find which you loved.
“Oh Y/N, taste this.” Moriarty said, finishing a bite. He held out the fork and you leaned forward. You bit down on the food. You saw the lust in Moriarty’s eyes now. As flirtatious as this action was, it honestly tasted delicious. You both brushed it off like nothing happened. The sexual tension was rising by the second.
The meal was amazing, and left you very full by the end of it. You were also a little more merry now, not drunk but after the 5th time of asking Moriarty to come back to the dance floor to show him you ‘great moves’, you looked at your phone. You soon realized it was around 11 PM. You tapped his arm gently to get his attention.
“Moriarty, I've really got to be off soon. It's nearly 12.” You said looking at your phone.
“Slow down cinderella, i'll get you home. I was hoping you'd stay longer and show me some more dance moves.” He said. You laughed. “But I know you've got to entertain our little detective tomorrow. Come on.” Moriarty said grinning. You nodded. He paid for the meal you  had and escorted you to a very fancy looking car, that was waiting at the bottom of the hotel’s steps. He held the door open and then joined you on the other side.
“Moriarty I-” You started.
“Please, call me Jim.” Jim said gently, a different side of him showing. He slid his hand onto your thigh. He seemed more bolder now. You blushed and then looked down at his cold hand and back at him.
“Jim What I was going to say was… I honestly had the most wonderful and magical night of my life. I don't think I could've ever been happier. Thank you so much.” You said properly, you liked the way his name sounded to you. Jim Moriarty gleamed at your words. “I'm an awfully lonely person, but tonight you made me feel not so lonely. Even though there’s the fear of you, possibly. Killing me… I had fun.” You added. He smirked at the last part.
“It's been an absolute delight to have taken you out. And i'd love to again.” Jim replied, he was very taken aback by what you had said. “And what’s life without a little bit of murderous fun?” He added. You chuckled.
“I also… Still don't get what's so intriguing about you, you're so…” Jim chuckled, looking down, having no words and being slightly drunk. Which now made you laugh too. His face was close to yours now, you could feel the warmth of him and smell the expensive cologne he had put on. He leaned in and kissed you, his hand cupping your cheek and the other to the back of your head, bringing you closer. You shifted closer to him. You could taste the whiskey on his lips and it drove you crazy, he felt so dangerous. But before it could go any further he pulled away.
“Ah, ah, ah Y/N not tonight. I don't trust you yet.” He whispered seductively, making your heart beat even faster, which you didn’t think it could. And then you were outside your apartment. You wished the ride lasted longer. You grabbed your bag and the chauffeur opened the door for you. Jim pulled you back quickly for a kiss on the cheek.
“Goodnight Jim Moriarty.” You giggled. Jim smirked.
“Goodnight F/N L/N.” He said, the door closed and you waved him off. You looked up at the night sky and sighed. You then ran up the steps to your apartment, it was very chilly.
You wished you had your camera. In fact you wished you brought it with you tonight, he looked stunning tonight as did you.
You sighed as you shut the door and dropped your bag. Leaning against your front door, you kicked your legs and your shoes flew off. You un-buttoned your coat and threw it on the floor. You draped yourself over the sofa and grabbed for the light.
“When were you going to tell me you were seeing Moriarty?” A voice said, you screamed. There he was sat on one of your corner chairs. Sherlock Holmes. He held up the polaroid of Moriarty.
“Sherlock?! What the hell, you don't just go and bloody… Break into my apartment!” You said, standing up, but honestly did you expect any less from Sherlock bloody Holmes.
“I didn't break in. Remember our first case? You said If I needed any help at any time, I could come right round.” He stood up, pacing around your living room. He was right. “Also your door was unlocked. Although well done on keeping your spare keys hidden. Buried under some moss and then under another plant pot never came across my mind.” He added. You still had no words. He looked at you. Deducing you.
“New outfit, not yours. Far too expensive. Hair, same as always but styled differently. Perfume.” He paused, stepping closer and smelling your perfume. You gulped, feeling uncomfortable. “Hmmm… Cheap disguised as much more expensive. And you've been drinking, red wine on your lips and…! Moriarty kissed you. You don't drink whiskey. You liked the kiss.” He finished. “Why?”
“He… Said if i didn't go with him, he'd kill me essentially. How could I not. Moriarty would've hurt you and John again.” You explained. “He took me to this gorgeous hotel Sherlock…” You fantasized still slightly hazy and drunk. Sherlock rolled his eyes, pacing again. “We danced and I spoke to his colleagues, we ate and drank. Nothing about you. He said it was about a test.” You finished.
“A test… He's lying to you Y/N, he doesn't like you, couldn't like anyone if he tried.” He said, harshly.
“There you go talking about you again. He was different. You can't stop me from seeing him.” You said dangerously.
“Y/N… Please, he's not a good man, he’ll use you. Like all your other relationships.” He said standing tall. The last bit really stung. You threw your arm back and slapped him across the face. Hard.
“Get out.” You said quietly. Tears running down your face. He left.
“I’ll be seeing you tomorrow, to discuss this properly.” He said seriously. He closed the door behind you and you ran to your room. You cried. But then of course… A text:
Stop. You're far too wonderful to cry, too beautiful, don't listen to him. Sleep.
JM
You almost didn't care if he was spying on you or not. You smiled and went to bed straight away. You wished he wasn't like the rest. Just here to use you. You felt protected throughout the night, feeling as if Moriarty was there with you. You were a mess but he didn’t care.
The next morning you spent it just taking photos around London, trying to clear your head. You thought about Moriarty, you weren't really clearing your head to be perfectly honest. You decided to visit Sherlock too.
You were sat in the client chair, you and John sat in silence. You drank tea quietly as Sherlock paced the room. No one had said anything since you arrived other than John asking if you wanted sugar or not.
“Look Sherlock I-” You started but he told you to shut up as he thought. “No, I won't shut-” You started again but he stopped you once more. You were now angrily sipping your tea.
“Leave them be… He doesn't seem as if he wants to kill Y/N…” John suggested.
“We don't know that. He said he was ‘testing’ you?” Sherlock asked you. You nodded.
“Yes but, he didn't take it too seriously... In fact he meant it in a fairly flirty-” Sherlock cut you off again. You were really getting pissed off now.
“Get out, go home or something. It’s as if i can hear your thoughts of that disgusting man.” Sherlock said abruptly. “And I can still smell that bloody whiskey.” He said in annoyance. You went to go and slap him again but instead pointed at him.
“Stay out of my apartment unless I invite you in.” You said, much more calmer this time. John chuckled. Proud of you standing up to Sherlock. You left, grabbed your camera bag and rushed out. You didn't know what you wanted. Was Jim here to just use you? Was last night a facade to just trick you?
You caught the tube home, not making eye contact with anyone, just focusing on nothing and wondering whether to call Jim or not. You took some more pictures outside of your apartment. Nothing seemed to be capturing your eye.
“Always take the shot.” Someone whispered in your ear, you jumped as you realized it was Jim Moriarty.
“You're here!” You said smiling, hugging him tightly. You quickly let go as you realized you were embarrassing yourself. He held you still.
“Yeah… I was a bit bored at home and thought I'd come see you. Killing people was boring today, also I'll be honest. I couldn't stop thinking about you. Cliche I know.” He said looking down a bit. You smiled even more. “Also as Sherlock was in your apartment last night, I got worried. I'm so sorry about that.” He added. Stroking your cheek, you leaned into his touch. You could see the almost worry in his eyes.
You reached up to him and kissed him, pulling his face towards yours. You stood there, feeling that feeling again when you were the only two people in the world. You both pulled away and you smiled. For once Jim was speechless.
“There's just something so amazing about you. I can't place my finger on it.” He said.
“How about we discuss it over a coffee?” You suggested. He nodded and the two of you left.
AAAA I AM SCREECHING! I’m so sorry? That ended so badly... Ugh. This won’t be the last of these I feel and PLEASE gimme some requests. I loved writing this. I also feel my writing of Moriarty is so bad?? aaaa!
Thank you so so much for reading this! x

Books DNF’d:
The Poisoned City by Anna Clark. This one didn’t quite live up to expectations. It included a lot of good information, but was formulated in a way that didn’t hold my interest. I understand why all the backstory was included, as it provided a context, but at the same time it worked as a distraction and made it difficult for me to follow things. Not a bad book by any means, just not written in a way that was helpful to me.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey. I was just… entirely uninterested and made extremely uncomfortable. I have difficulties with classics sometimes. Oh well.
Caged by Ellison Cooper. This book isn’t bad, it just isn’t good. The writing could have used some polishing, the characters feel not very real, the plot is a bit interesting but not interesting enough to keep me engaged. It could have used a lot more “show not tell” imo. It does have some diversity to it, at least: the MC is a biracial woman of color. I do also want to warn potential readers that there is a trans character who is forced to come out due to circumstances beyond their control as part of the plot. It is a “twist” in a way and as a cis person, I cannot comment on the rep, but I felt a little uncomfortable about it.

This week’s author interview is with my awesome friend J.M. Sullivan, author of Alice: The Wanderland Chronicles!
Intro: What’s your name, what do you write, where can readers find you on social media? And just for fun, if you could be any mythological being, what or who would you be?
Hi! My name is JM Sullivan and I write retellings! My debut novel, Alice: The Wanderland Chronicles is a Dark Fantasy retelling of Alice in Wonderland, and my current WIP is a SciFi retelling of Peter Pan! If this sounds like your cup of tea, you can follow me on Twitter or Instagram @_JM_Sullivan or on YouTube on my Author Confession channel. As for mythological beings: I think I’d have to go with a fairy! It would bring my sparkle game to a whole new level!
What got you interested in writing/ When did you become SERIOUS about writing?
I have always been interested in writing, even at a young age. My parents were both teachers and fostered a love of reading in me, which turned into telling my own stories as soon as I could write. I’ve written several short stories, and even began a couple of novel projects, but, I didn’t become serious about my writing until I got the idea for Alice. It hit me like a ton of bricks and the way it fell into place, it was just like ‘I have to write this.’ After that I made the commitment to finish the draft by the end of 2016, and instead, I finished it in three months. The rest, as they say, was history! 😉
What inspired your book?
THE WANDERLAND CHRONICLES is a mash-up of two of my favorite things. Fairy tales and horror. I was thinking about retellings and the ideas behind them when I thought about the Red Queen’s iconic line, ‘Off With Their Heads!’ Well, my husband and I had recently been on a zombie kick, and as any good zombie-buff knows, the only way to stop the undead is by chopping off their heads. It was too perfect not to use!
What is the book about?
THE WANDERLAND CHRONICLES follows the story of sixteen-year-old Alice Carroll as she tries to navigate the wilds of Wanderland to save her sister from succumbing to the Momerath Plague. Unfortunately, outside the safety of the Sector, momerath aren’t the only danger waiting for her and she must fight to survive or both she—and Dinah—will be lost forever.
What are the characters like?
Since it’s a retelling, I tried to make all of the characters reflect their counterparts in Carroll’s story in at least some way. You can expect to see all of your favorite Wonderland residents in ALICE, including a few new faces! I’ll give a couple of examples of the traits I partnered with my characters, but you’ll have to read to find the rest!
Alice: Curious, has a strange habit of talking to herself
Chess: Has a tendency to disappear then mysteriously turn up again.
Bug: Terrible chain smoker. Also a conspiracy theorist

Who should pick up your book and why?
Of course, I would love to hear what Lewis Carroll fans think about THE WANDERLAND CHRONICLES, but ALICE was written for retelling fans everywhere. If you enjoy fairy tales, especially twisty ones—I think this just might be a book for you. If you aren’t familiar with retellings but you enjoy action, suspense, and just a dash of horror this could just be your gateway book! 😀
Favorite quote from your own work?
Well, I don’t know how impressive this line will be without context, but it’s one of my favorite lines in ALICE.
“That’s easy, Alice,” he said. His amber eyes melted into hers. “It’s the first rule of chess:  always protect your queen.”
Once you read, you’ll have to tell me what you think. 😉
Traditional or Self-publishing? Why?
ALICE is represented by Pen Name Publishing, which is a small but traditional publishing company. I knew that I wanted to be represented by a publisher because I wanted as much help as I could get to share Alice with the world. Even though self-publishing is a completely viable option, it is HUGE (kudos to all you self-pubbed authors!!). It wasn’t something I felt confident that I could do well enough to give Alice justice. And after jumping into the publishing world, I definitely think I made the right choice.
If you could only write in one genre for the rest of your life what would it be and why?
Well, at least for the foreseeable future, I’m planning on sticking with retellings! If it takes me forever to get them out, then I’m totally ok with it. I love retellings because there are so many incredible classics out there and countless ways that they can be reimagined. I love finding ways to blend the old and the new and see what the final project turns out to be. I guess you could say, I’m Hooked.
Name one book that affected the way you write?
The Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce was definitely a game changer for me. It was the first retelling I ever read that took a darker turn on the fairy tale rather than following the ‘standard’ light-hearted re-imaginings I’d seen. I loved what she did to Little Red Riding Hood and how it made for a gritty, thrilling adventure. I knew if I ever wrote a retelling (which happened a long time after I originally read the series) I wanted it to be something more than just Fantasy, and her books showed me it could be done.
Three authors you recommend and why?
Well, based on my previous answer, if you are a retelling fan, definitely check out Jackson Pearce. Her work is great. Marissa Meyer is also another retelling queen, and her Cinder series? Off the chain. So, between those two, your TBR easily just added six books. If you aren’t really in the mood for fairy tales, I would recommend Richelle Mead. She is an excellent author with a broad range of books. Although she’s most famous for her Vampire Academy series, her Bloodlines series (which is a spinoff from Vampire Academy) has really taken off as well. BUT my favorite book of hers is actually a little less-well known—tragic, I tell you—and it is the Age of X series. It’s aimed at an older audience (I’d say New Adult/Adult), but the storyline is incredible. Definitely one of my favorite series!
If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
If I could change one thing about the world, I would have people be nicer to each other. It makes me so sad to see so much hate everywhere. I understand that our world and the people in it are not perfect and obviously that not everyone is going to feel the exact same way about things, but we don’t have to tear each other apart about it. Honestly, seeing some of the things that are going on just make my heart hurt. So, if you every need a little happy, come see me. Because even though I’m just one person and my impact may be small, I’ll do whatever I can to help the world Sparkle On.
What do you believe is your main purpose/motivation as a writer?
For me, it’s all about my readers. As I said above, sometimes life just sucks and we need an escape. If my book can provide that reprieve or fantasy for someone and make their day seem just a little better, I’ll consider it a success.
What’s a favorite moment you’ve had with a fan/someone who’s read your work?
Gosh there are so many! I love meeting and interacting with my readers; it’s one of the best things about being an author! But I LOVE when people send me fan art of characters from Wanderland. It’s so cool too see what their representations of the characters and story are. It’s like their work breathes in a whole new life to ALICE and it is so fun to see!
One fun fact most people don’t know about you?
Ummm… well, I don’t just like to write, I also love to sing. I’ve performed in several theater productions and have been a vocalist for several praise bands!
One piece of advice you would give to new writers?
Be kind to yourself! I think more often than not the reason we writers feel the need to give up is because we beat up on ourselves so often! Having an inner critic can be good to help stretch your work and yourself, but don’t give the nasty little guy so much reign that he completely derails you. Just remember, someone needs your words. To get them out there you have to write them!
Thanks for all the awesome advice J.M! What’s your favorite retelling? Share in the comments and don’t forget to grab your own copy of Alice from Amazon!
As always, keep making magic, word weavers!

For the week of 17 September 2018
Quick Bits:
Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 gives us an “untold tale” of Spider-Man shortly after Secret Wars while he still had the black costume from Saladin Ahmed, Gerry Brown, Lee Loughridge, and Joe Caramagna. It’s a nice bit of embellishment, giving us a look more at the reactions from the people around Peter and what the Venom symbiote was doing while he slept. The dark, moody art from Brown and Loughridge is perfect for this.

Avengers #8 is a bit of a housekeeping issue from Jason Aaron, taking stock of what’s changed for this new incarnation of the team, putting together the status of the various members, and setting up the new status quo. It’s nice to see David Marquez and Justin Ponsor aboard for this arc, continuing the very high bar this volume is setting for art.

Black Hammer: Age of Doom #5 answers all of the questions, with Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston filling in all of the details in Lucy’s quest to find the missing heroes. It’s an interesting, and satisfying, revelation that sets up an even bigger picture and possible looming threat.

Bloodborne #5 begins a new arc, returning to the city, and focusing on a scientific and religious inquiry into the nature of the affliction besetting the world. Wonderful art from Piotr Kowalski and Brad Simpson.

Burnouts #1 isn’t a bad start from Dennis Culver, Geoffo, Dave Dwonch, and Lauren Perry, riffing on the teen alien invasion vibe of things like The Faculty. The premise of needing to be high or otherwise intoxicated to see the true threat is an interesting one, leaving an obvious out as to whether or not it’s real, but this issue largely takes it at face value.

Captain America Annual #1 is very well done. Tini Howard, Chris Sprouse, Ron Lim, Karl Story, Walden Wong, Scott Hanna, Jesus Aburtov, Erick Arciniega, Israel Silva, and Joe Caramagna give us a story set deep into World War 2 of Cap and Bucky behind German lines, helping a group of civilians who escaped from Stutthof.

Death or Glory #5 sets fire to Glory’s life quite literally. This entire series so far has been damned good, moving at a breakneck pace pushing the characters harder and further with each subsequent issue. Rick Remender, Bengal, and Rus Wooton continue to deliver.

Dick Tracy: Dead or Alive #1 is a curious thing, embracing the odd stylistic choices of Chester Gould’s characters with Rich Tommaso and Mike Allred’s art, and the kind of throwback tone of Lee & Mike Allred’s script, but through the use of a cellphone it doesn’t seem to be a period piece. Still, it’s an entertaining beginning to this mini.

Ether: The Copper Golems #5 is the bittersweet end to this mini, setting up a new problem for Boone and co. to face in the third series, but in doing so putting him in an even more tragic situation, both in the present and in the flashback back-up. Matt Kindt & David Rubín have bottled magic with this series and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

GI Joe: A Real American Hero - Silent Option #1 begins a new limited series following Bombstrike and her team’s investigation of the missing Helix. It’s a bit bloodier and more brutal than the mothership series, but given the subject of human trafficking, it’s kind of understandable. Larry Hama, Netho Diaz, Alisson Rodrigues, Jagdish Kumar, Vinicius Townsend, and Neil Uyetake put together a decent start here. There’s also a great back-up filling us in on Helix’s past from Ryan Ferrier & Kenneth Loh.

Hack/Slash: Resurrection #11 is the conclusion to the “Return to Haverhill” arc and it continues with the usual offbeat humour that Tini Howard has brought to the title. Mixing the horror with wacky hijinks.

Ice Cream Man #7 might be one of the more horrifying issues of the series, telling the tale of a young girl coming to terms with the death of her best friend. That story alone is enough to pick up the issue, but it also brings back more of the ongoing story of the Ice Cream Man’s trials as well, giving us a bit more interconnectivity of what are otherwise mostly standalone tales.

Immortal Hulk #6 sees Al Ewing working to put the disparate pieces of the run so far together, along with revealing at least one group of antagonists dogging Banner’s heels, and working Hulk back into the broader world of the Marvel Universe to deal with the ramifications that have been hovering since Civil War 2. Surprisingly, none of it is particularly confusing, which is a testament to how Ewing is laying this out. Also, really nice guest art from Lee Garbett (with colours from Paul Mounts).

Impossible Incorporated #1 is a new all ages mini from JM DeMatteis and Mike Cavallaro. I have fond memories of their previous collaboration The Life & Times of Savior 28, so came into this with some fairly high expectations. They were exceeded. The premise for this series taps into the same family of adventurers dynamic of the Fantastic Four and Challengers of the Unknown, and it yields some interesting characters, weird landscapes, and phenomenal art.

Infinity Wars: Soldier Supreme #1 is the first of these Infinity Warps tie-in minis to the overarching Infinity Wars saga, blending together two of Marvel’s heroes in this new reality. In this case, Captain America and Doctor Strange. I’m not sure how much impact these will ultimately have on the event, but it’s a fun diversion. Gerry Duggan, Adam Kubert, Matthew Wilson, and Clayton Cowles deliver an entertaining beginning to this story, laying out Stephen Rogers’ origin and showcasing a number of other amalgamated heroes and a rather interesting villain. Kubert and Wilson’s art is definitely more than worth the price of admission.

The Life of Captain Marvel #3 delivers more heartfelt and strange complications for Carol Danvers. I’m really enjoying the drama that Margaret Stohl is creating in this series, it’s really been injecting a real element of humanity in Carol that’s been missing for years.

Mr. & Mrs. X #3 gives us an explanation for the egg that everybody and their bird-brained aunt are fighting over. This development is definitely very interesting for the cosmic side of things.

Olivia Twist #1 is an updating of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, gender-bent and worked into the future, by Darin Strauss, Adam Dalva, Emma Vieceli, Lee Loughridge, and Sal Cipriano. The premise works quite well adapted to a dystopian future, with the protections of society broken down and oppression at an all time high. Although this is set in a future Britain, it’s easy to see similar conditions in America today. What really brings the book together is the artwork from Vieceli and Loughridge.

Patience! Conviction! Revenge! #1 is the beginning to what looks to be another beautiful sci-fi epic, starting out with a bit of a western feel, before moving on to the city. I quite like the voice that Patrick Kindlon gives to the protagonist, Renny, as he doesn’t seem to shut up. Also, the artwork from Marco Ferrari and Patrizia Comino is wonderful. Ferrari has a style that reminds me of Sean Gordon Murphy and Devmalya Pramanik and it perfectly suits a lived-in future.

Return of Wolverine #1 is not a terrible comic. In fact the artwork from Steve McNiven, Jay Leisten, and Laura Martin is very, very good. McNiven seems to be channelling Barry Windsor-Smith for the artwork and it’s perfect. The action and page compositions are wonderful. I can also say that the story, dialogue and such, from Charles Soule is not bad. I’m not sure if I like the implied idea of pulling Wolverine’s history from him, putting the memory genie back in the bottle when we already know his Origin, is a good idea, but his issues with Persephone and Soteira are at least interesting.
What ruins this comic, however, like the Hunt for Wolverine: Dead Ends issue, is that it renders the entire Hunt for Wolverine event superfluous. It doesn’t respect the readers’ time or money, showing that Hunt for Wolverine didn’t build to anything. There’s absolutely nothing in this comic that necessitates having read anything before it. That’s good for new readers, but it’s a crappy ploy from Marvel that manufactured an empty event that seems like its sole purpose was to bilk the customer. I feel terrible saying that, since for the most part the mini-series weren’t bad in isolation, but as a whole, it just seems like a marketing stunt. When it comes to a character like Wolverine, who has previously been associated with the idea of market oversaturation, it’s just worse.
From Marvel Legacy through to now, it doesn’t feel like there’s been any guiding hand. It doesn’t feel like there’s been any coherence between any of the appearances. It just feels like Marvel turning to some of their worst tendencies in making this past year or so a marketing ploy, tarnishing something that possibly could have been special, and ruining the return of Wolverine. Wolverine’s still dead, Marvel’s just pimping a corpse.

Seven to Eternity #11 checks in on Adam’s family at the farm while he’s hanging around with the Mud King. Like every issue, beautiful, stunning artwork from Jerome Opeña and Matt Hollingsworth, somehow outdoing themselves with the brilliant colour schemes and impressive character designs. Also, I love the biting, almost subtle, humour that Rick Remender employs for the Mud King’s dialogue.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #86 begins the Earth Protection Force’s assault on Burnow Island, the new home to the Triceratons and Utroms. The action depicted by a returning Dave Wachter (with colours by Ronda Pattison) is very nice, even as we get some interesting moral and ethical hemming and hawing from both the Turtles and Burnow’s defenders as they choose whether or not to release their war criminals to help fight against the EPF. This feels like the beginning of something very heavy.

Thor #5 resumes the King Thor story from the first issue, in the far-flung future, with a reunion between Thor and Logan. It’s not quite as bonkers a story from Jason Aaron as the opening Niffleheim arc, but it’s certainly up there. I almost get the impression that Aaron and Donny Cates are seeing how far they push the cosmic envelope at Marvel right now, between their respective series. In any event, it’s led to some great storytelling. Especially when you add guest artist Christian Ward, who just makes this a must buy.

Venom #6 is a not-so-subtle reminder that the art team of Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, Frank Martin, and Clayton Cowles are absolute beasts. Every issue of this series has been impeccably crafted so far and I swear that this one ups the ante. Gorgeous work from the team.

West Coast Avengers #2 is more ridiculous fun. If you liked the first issue, this is more of that, with some even more over-the-top shenanigans with the team, as they try to get to the bottom of BRODOK. Kelly Thompson’s dialogue and humour here are a highlight, reminding me of some of best of Keith Giffen and JM DeMatteis’ work on the bwahaha era of the Justice League. A book that doesn’t take itself too seriously is a nice balm these days. Also, gorgeous artwork again from Stefano Caselli and Tríona Farrell.
