it belongs to the family of lamnidae, also known as mackerel sharks or isurids. lammidae are large, aggressive and powerful sharks that live in tropical to cold, temperate waters globally. there's only 5 species of shark belonging to this family: white shark, shortfin mako, longfin mako, porbeagle and the salmon shark.

its the fastest shark species with cruising speeds of 45mph (faster than a running horse!!) to astonishing speeds of 60mph! these gorgeous speed demons are able to be so magnificently agile due to their strong muscles and a streamlined body which allows them to power through water in fast bursts.

also, same as their lamnidae family, shortfin mako’s have specialised blood vessels that regulates their blood temperature to be higher than the surrounding water by producing heat metabolically. this is referred to as a heat exchange circulatory system and makes them one of the few endothermic sharks! their warms blood enhances their agility, allowing them to move at greater speeds, and being able to swim intensely for longer periods of time and reside in colder waters.

primarily, their diet consists of bluefish, swordfish, tuna, marine mammals and few other sharks. as they are aggressive predators near the top of the marine food web, this speedster doesn't have many predators, just commonly other larger sharks when shortfin's are still juveniles.

shortfin mako's habitat is near the surface of tropical and temperate oceans. juveniles are commonly located in coastal waters and adults are more likely found offshore. however, they are still highly migratory and are incredibly capable of swimming long distances across entire oceans!

these guys are certainly no where near being the largest shark species, the whale shark, by averaging size of 1-2 metres (6-7 feet). mako's suit the average shark lifespan (20-30 years) by being capable of living up to and over 30 years.

their reproduction doesn't happen until later in life. males at 8 years of age whilst females 20. a female shortfin shark's pregnancy lasts 15-18 months and they give birth to live young. their offspring ranges from 4-16 pups and, at birth, the pups range from 68-71cm (27-28 inches). also, each female will give birth to the ranged amount of pups every 3 years, due to their reproductive cycle. mating occurs from summer to autumn where eggs are fertilised internally and then develop inside the mother.

unfortunately, according to the 2019 stock assessment, shortfin mako sharks are overfished and subject to overfishing due to their coastal and temperate latitude across all oceans, making them an easy target. they are either targeted commercially, caught purposely to create a profit, or captured accidentally in fisheries. shortfins are valued for the quality of their fins and meat.

thankfully, NOAA fisheries implemented regulations to protect the shortfins after they were determined "critically endangered" in 2019, after being up-listed from "vulnerable" and "near-threatened" back in 2007. this rebuilding plan promotes population growth.

Thomas Wolsey

Thomas Wolsey, Cardinal Archbishop of York (l. c. 1473-1530 CE) served as Lord Chancellor to Henry VIII of England (r. 1509-1547 CE) from around 1513 CE to 1529 CE. Wolsey rose to become the most powerful man in England after the king, he created the Chancery court, worked with some success at England's foreign policy, and famously built Hampton Court Palace near London. Unable to secure from the Pope the annulment of Henry's first marriage to Catherine of Aragon (1485-1536 CE), Wolsey fell out of favour with his friend and monarch. Accused of treason, the cardinal was already seriously ill when he died on his way to imprisonment and trial in November 1530 CE.

Early Life & Rise in the Church

Thomas Wolsey was born c. 1473 CE in Ipswich, the son of a butcher. He studied at university and became the chaplain to Henry VII of England (r. 1485-1509 CE), gaining invaluable experience of Tudor politics from his sponsor, the councillor Bishop Richard Fox (1448-1528 CE). However, it was under Henry VIII that Wolsey's career really took off. Indeed, after being appointed the royal almoner (giver of alms) in 1509 CE and benefitting from the new king surrounding himself with his own advisors rather than his father's, Wolsey enjoyed a meteoric rise to power from 1514 CE. He became the bishop of Lincoln in March 1514 CE and just a few months later, in September, he was appointed archbishop of York and so became the second most powerful church official in England.

Eager to be the top man in England but realising the current Archbishop of Canterbury was secure in his position, Wolsey bypassed him by directly approaching the Pope. In 1515 CE Wolsey became a cardinal and so he now outranked even the archbishop; he was truly a 'prince of the Church.' In 1518 CE Wolsey went one step higher and became a papal legate (legatus a latere), that is a representative of the Pope himself and entitled to make decisions on his behalf. Usually, legates were given their authority for a limited time only and for a specific purpose such as an international conference. In 1524 CE, Cardinal Wolsey was given legate powers for life. Thomas could now really believe that one day, he might even be in a position to grab the very top job of Pope.

Even before these momentous ecclesiastical progressions, and much more importantly for history, Wolsey had become Lord Chancellor around 1513 CE (or perhaps 1515 CE, historians do not agree on the date). In this position, he was, in effect, Henry VIII's sole minister, the very apex of the pyramid of political power in England. Thanks to his administrative skills and good friendship with the king, Wolsey became a giant political spider with a web of subordinates that stretched into every part of the kingdom.

As the historian S. Brigden summarises, Wolsey developed a very special working relationship with his mercurial monarch:

The Council was still consulted, but only after Wolsey and the king, in a kind of partnership, had determined policy. Wolsey would first 'move' Henry towards some idea; the King 'dreamed of it more and more'; and only then would the council be informed. Wolsey's influence seemed supreme, and his household, in its magnificence, looked a rival to the royal court. So completely did he see himself as alter rex, it was alleged, that he would say: 'The King and I would ye should do thus: the King and I do give you our hearty thanks.' His pride and splendour were legendary: crosses, pillars and poleaxes, hated symbols of his authority, were carried before him; earls and lords served him. (106)

Initially, I thought about describing what Dragon Ball means to me. How it was the first anime I really delved into, barring gateway shows; how my first exposure was a few minutes of episode 26, the way that Goku helicoptering back into the ring during his fight with Jackie Chun is what sticks in my mind.

I thought about trying to put into words the impact Toriyama's instantly recognizable art style had on how I viewed and thought about anime; how much influence his story had on my early development as a writer.

I considered sharing how I met my first lifelong online friends on a forum dedicated to fans of a web animation series inspired by Dragon Ball Z.

And yet. . .

It feels inadequate as a sendoff to a man who created perhaps the shonen hero. One of those characters that kids and teenagers worldwide literally responded to; raising their hands to answer his call, eager to partake in his fight against evil.

More appropriate, I think, to reflect on a few of the many lessons Toriyama gave us via Dragon Ball.

Life—and people—will often be confusing. Rather than running from what you don't understand, embrace and stew in the frustration of being confounded. That's the path to discovering what's truly important to you.

You will witness and encounter cruelty. Inevitably. Perhaps even disproportionately. But do not let fear of getting hurt dominate your life. Remember that there is also strength in kindness.

And that not all who are stronger than you wish you harm.

Find mentors. Anywhere you can; no matter how some carry themselves, isolation in excess will stunt your growth. No one achieves it all on their own. The forms your teachers take may surprise you.

But so will the culmination of what you learn from them.

Complacency is for fools. Life will dole out defeat. You will lose. Again. And again. And again. But you should not be discouraged.

Rather, rejoice that there are still summits you haven't climbed, that there's still more you can learn. Because life is an adventure.

And, of course, take to heart the teachings of the Kame school of martial arts; a philosophy not just for fighting, but for life.

Do not seek to grow so that you might impress or lord it over others, but for your own sake; to discover the best version of yourself and take even greater joy from life. But should anyone threaten you or the meek using their strength unjustly, make sure you set them straight!

Work hard, play a lot, learn all you can, eat well and rest plenty.

Such is the way of the Kame School.

You certainly worked and played, Mr. Akira Toriyama. I don't know that any number of words can properly encapsulate a human life. But I do know that you should rest easy, knowing how far your story reached, and how magnificently you inspired us.

Silver-Spotted Tiger Moth Caterpillar - Lophocampa argentata

In addition to a video featuring this furry insect, my dear friend has also gifted me with some images to provide a better view of this fluffy insect. As mentioned earlier, this individual could have been seeking a secluded pupation area when it was found, at least if its size is any indication. With its large size combined with significant hair coverage and the presence of those short, darkened tufts, its fair to guess that this may be the final instar. It's astonishing to learn that this fuzzy Caterpillar grows so large from eating mostly conifer needles, but insects have proven time and again that they are extremely adaptable when it comes to meeting their survival needs. This also includes their "safety in numbers" feeding approach whereby many of these Caterpillars will aggregate and feed together on a pine branch beneath a tent of webbing. It's only when it's time to pupate that this specie will leave its siblings and find hidden areas in the undergrowth to pupate. The adult Moths emerge for the summer months (lending more credence to this individual being in its final instar, and factoring in pupa development time).

On the subject of the adults, the Moths trade in their irritating, rash-inducing hairs for sable-like thoracic hairs and a set of magnificent brown and white wings. The brown forewings are adorned with rows, patterns and blotches of silver spots, hence their common name. In comparison, the Silver-Spotted Skipper (a very, very distant specie on another branch in the order) has been noted for its prominent singular whitish-silver spot along its forewing. While the common nomenclature between the two Lepidopterans is the same, the application of the two is varies. The Silver-Spotted Skipper may be more prominent due to its size, daytime activity and its visibility near flowers, but this Moth specie has many more spots to enjoy, and a specie name rooted in silver (argentata comes from argentum, meaning silver (hence why "Ag" represents silver on a periodic table). To catch a potential glimpse of the adults at the beginning of spring or mid-summer (if you're on the west coast), keep a close eye on pine trees and nearby flowers, especially if they have been fed on previously. Their spots should make them easy to, well, spot. As Moths, they are drawn to these trees to place eggs on them, not to feed on them.

Reviving The Old Penn Station 👇 🚂 👇

Penn Station was a historic railroad station in New York City, named for the Pennsylvania Railroad. It was considered a masterpiece of the Beaux-Arts style and one of the great architectural works of New York City.

Here at Nova Concepts, we wanted to revive the main waiting room with this vintage rendering. Our client ReThinkNYC promoted the idea and took us back to this Magnificent Architectural Landmark.

K-On! series 1 volume 2 review - originally published on Anime Picks 9/11/2011

K-On! Volume 2 follows on where the previous volume left off with Yui, Ritsu, Mio and Mugi practising hard for their first concert. The girls are working towards their first performance at the annual school festival and request help from their teacher Ms. Yamanaka when they discover that she was once a previous member of the school’s Light Music Club. However, the girls get more than they bargain for as they reveal a side to Ms. Yamanaka that they never knew existed!

K-On! Volume 2 re-confirms everything that Volume 1 made you suspect; this is an adorable series with endearing and loveable characters that has real crossover appeal despite its rather cutesy and girly appearance.

While the first volume laid the foundation that the series is built on, this volume really makes sure you’re staying for the long run. The plot develops magnificently and each character is drawn upon to great effect. More is revealed about each character and they’re all made incredibly believable and more importantly, relatable.

Yui finally begins to develop as a guitarist and allows the band to actually enjoy their first performance. This is the real highlight of the volume and the execution is brilliantly stylish. As the band begins to play, the scene cuts to Mio’s imagination. The song they perform is then displayed as a music video displaying the band as accomplished musicians with their own outfits. It’s a wonderfully dreamy sequence that stands out as a great visual metaphor for the band’s achievements thus far.

Animation is suitably top notch throughout this volume and continues the trend of fluid, almost rotoscoped animation for the more realistic and down-to-Earth moments in the series. This is juxtaposed with wacky, cartoony animation in the more light-hearted scenes such as when Mio gets unnecessarily scared over the most insignificant things. This works well with the series’ more family orientated tone and plays directly into its strengths.

Audio greatly improves over the first volume as well. While the incidental music is still minimalist and somewhat childish, this actually helps put emphasis on the band’s big performance and makes the song they play really stand out. K-On! does so much to make its characters’ achievements special for the viewer. The performance genuinely gives you an emotional connection with the band as all their hard work pays off.

The English dub is very consistent and well acted. In the first volume, Yui’s voice felt a little forced and ‘too cute’. Stephanie Sheh actually does a considerably better job of making Yui sound more like a child and less like an adult doing a child’s voice in this series and it makes the character much more believable. In fact, all the voice actors are on top form in regards to this volume and generally make the entire experience feel completely natural to watch.

K-On! has definitely hit its stride in this second volume. The series may put off viewers looking for something more adult, but you’d be doing yourself a massive disservice. K-On! is a series for all the family to enjoy, especially anyone who has ever had any experience in a band or generally playing an instrument.
