not trying to make assumptions but knowing you were a big homestuck artist i feel like the harley egbert boy trying to choose a name has to be a intentional reference... x D

Ahh, sorry, it's not a reference at all! There are a couple of small references in the comic, teensy-weensy ones just as a playful nod, but this isn't one at all.

If the veil has opened to them, and they decide to stay, wards are given the option to completely start their lives anew. So, when given the option, some opt to choose new names. While some would definitely be on a reason of Rule of Cool/Whim (I'm sure there's some ward out there named Sephiroids McSwaghammer), there's some that found the Veil seeking a home they'd never truly had before. To those wards a name that they've longed to hear calling for them, but may not yet know, is one of the first bricks to start building with.

… Maia's name ended up fitting squarely in the middle of both. I mean, c'mon. Maia Vela Pyxis? How subtle! But hey, she was still just a kid, and sentimentality and goofy whimsy often go hand in hand at that age. We've a vast wealth of baby's first internet screen names as proof of that.

(It's not intentional that she looks like your descriptor, either, but I've laughed before with my friends that she came out looking a bit like Jade, lol)
