El adiós a una gran campeona sudamericana: Odete

Una de las más notables notables lanzadoras de disco del historial sudamericano, la brasileña Odete Valentina Domingos, acaba de fallecer a sus 86 años, este 27 de noviembre en Campinas, Sao Paulo. “La CBAT expresa su más sentido pésame”, señala el comunicado oficial de su Confederación. Nacida el 5 de septiembre de 1934, Odete es –junto a su compatriota Elisángela Adriano- la mayor ganadora de esa prueba en el historial de los Campeonatos Sudamericanos: consiguió siete títulos entre 1967 y 1983, además de dos medallas de plata. Lo más extraordinario es que el último de dichos títulos, logrado en la ciudad de Santa Fe, lo consiguió a los 49 años, siendo así la más veterana campeona del  historial de los campeonatos, considerando todas las pruebas del programa. Según señala la CBAT “La "tía" Odete, como le gustaba que la llamaran, fue una figura icónica del deporte brasileño y paulista y hasta hace poco trabajó en la preparación de estudiantes de la Escuela Preparatoria de Cadetes del Ejército (EsPCEx), en Campinas, donde sirvió durante 40 años. Profesora de Educación Física, comenzó su vida profesional como trabajadora doméstica y fue camarera en una guardería municipal. A los 16 años conoció al entrenador Argemiro Roque, con quien entrenó durante toda su carrera y luego se casó. El comienzo fue difícil. No tenía zapatos adecuados para competir, pero eso no le impidió perseverar: llevaba zapatillas remendadas con cinta adhesiva, pero aun así logró el récord sudamericano”. Agrega que “desde pequeña tuve una pasión y trabajó duro por ella: el deporte. Odette llevaba consigo una larga historia de sangre, sudor y lágrimas, pero nunca se dejó sacudir por las dificultades de la vida. Nacida en el “campo”, de padres humildes, se mudó a la ciudad de Campinas en busca de una vida mejor, trabajando como empleada doméstica para mantenerse e invertir en su pasión. Todo su éxito se debió al entrenamiento, ya que la tía Odette trabajaba todo el día para entrenar por la noche, a menudo sin comer entremedio. Pero la vida no estaba hecha sólo de obstáculos. Odette fue una mujer sumamente dedicada y, como resultado, ganó varios títulos y premios. A pesar de una carrera internacional llena de títulos (y un enorme respeto dentro de la comunidad deportiva), Odete nunca logró ahorrar dinero. Hace poco que pagó su propia casa. Antes vivía pagando alquiler. Su vida fue un ejemplo y, a pesar de las dificultades, se convirtió en un referente para algunas generaciones de deportistas en la ciudad que adoptó como suya”.   Odete estableció su primer récord sudamericano a los 41 años, al marcar 50.78 metros durante el  Campeonato Sudamericano de Rio de Janeiro, el 26 de agosto de 1975. Superó así la marca de la chilena Miriam Yutronic –una de sus clásicas rivales- quien tenía 50.22 desde dos años antes en  Guadalajara. A la semana siguiente, en la Copa Latina, también en Rio, Odete llevó el récord a 51.98. Y lo consiguió por tercera vez el 3 de septiembre de 1983, nuevamente en Rio, con 53 metros, justos, marca que superó la colombiana María Isabel Urrutia con 55.56 en 1985. Aquella  fue la mejor marca de la campaña de Odete quien todavía en 1987, y ya con 53 años, se ubicaba en el top 10 de nuestra región con una marca de 48.06 conseguida en Mainza, Alemania. En una época donde, todavía, a las atletas de nuestra región se les hacía muy difícil alcanzar la cota olímpica, estuvo cerca de participar en Tokio (1964). Pero sí asistió dos veces a los Juegos Panamericanos, logrando el 7° puesto en Sao Paulo 1963 con 40.43 y el sexto lugar en México 1975 con 47.76. En los Campeonatos Sudamericanos, como citamos, su performance fue excepcional. Global Youth Issued Joint Statement on Myanmar’s Human Rights Crisis

252 youth organizations with 1.7 million members from 65 countries joined in joint statement advocating peaceful solutions to the human rights crisis in Myanmar. Through this “Joint Statement of World’s Civil Society and Youth on Myanmar’s Human Rights Crisis,” youth organizations take into account international cooperation to increase the collective voice for seeking solutions through talks among the stakeholders of the country.

In the statement, it said, “We urge the head of state of each country and the international community to actively pursue peaceful measures to safeguard the lives of Myanmar’s citizens.” It added, “We urge people and media worldwide to raise their voices in support of finding peaceful resolutions to the current crisis.”

The statement highlighted that global youth’s “commitment to work toward ceasing conflicts, countering violence and establishing sustainable peace through the 2018’s UN Youth Declaration.” Mr. Mainza M Hiyamwa, Chairperson of Chosen Generation Youth Club Solwezi (CGYC) of Zambia, said, “The UN and international society are being the main pillars of peace and security, human rights, and development. It's more vital that we gain access and disseminate information on the range of issues affecting the people of Myanmar. By so doing it would carry more impact and help in the restoration of peace, human rights promotion, and development of the country.”

Mr. Alemayehu Menta, President of Gato Development Association said that the peace of youth should be protected. Also, Mr. Shirwan, Chairman of Peace Generations Iraqi Network told, "I really appreciate that I can do something for world peace."

Facing the current deadlock of counteractions against the humanitarian crisis from the deaths and injuries continually occurring in Myanmar, this global movement by youth organizations has been led by the International Peace Youth Group, an affiliated organization of Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light registered in the UN ECOSOC.

This joint statement was sent to the UN Secretary General, international organizations, governments and civil society organizations.
