so, with amazon getting more and more evil about not letting you own the things you buy from them, I finally went ahead and scraped the drm off my kindle books. while it did require a bunch of setup, the process itself was pretty easy and less intimidating than I had feared, so I want to share some helpful tools I used if you want to do the same but aren't sure where to start:

An excellent step-by-step video guide

Calibre (the main program you will need)

The de-drm extension you'll want to add to Calibre

A guide to downgrading the kindle for pc app to a version that makes this easier

#doing my library took a while because of the setup but then doing my mom's library (75+ books) took like. ten minutes #fyi i did this on a windows 11 pc. i do not own a physical kindle (i've used the android app) so i didn't need to do the serial number thin #ymmv on how well these tools work depending on your computer #i'm happy to answer some questions but honestly just follow along with that video he makes it SUPER easy

sorry but I'm on Phil's side about phones being too big

#i refuse to get an iPhone #and there are literally no small androids out there #and then they put the screen right to the edge so your constantly interacting using your finger webbing when you reach across the screen #like if they need the phone to be big to fit the hardware just make it fatter #phone screens now are the same size as small tablets in 2010 (7in). it's ridiculous #the only time i lile my big screen is when i split screen so i can put my YouTube up the top and then use the remaining screen for apps #and like my phone is already so bulky bc i have to have a popgrip or else its too big to hold #AND its too big for most pocket #big screen phones can die #amazing phil #phil lester #phan

isnt it crazy that someone can make a completely legal app for ios but if apple doesn't want it in its app store because of lol lmao reasons you have to then go through a gazillion loops just to get this one app and also millions of people buy apple's products because they don't see the problem with an operating system that fully controls what you can or can't have on your device and also has several other major problems. insane

#m #like ive been taking my 3ds to english classes because the kids find it more fun than regular ol' excerises #and also watching movies gets stale pretty fast #but out of the 9 games i own only three let me change the language to english #because pokemon and apparently professor layton too thought it was a very smart idea to have region-locked games 🤪#but getting a ds emulator on ios is soooooooo goddamn dififcult. cant just download a zip file you have to hack your iPad or smth #cant download music either you have to download itunes and put your music files on iTunes and then sync your iPad to itunes #but also it makes a backup copy everytime even though i don't want one and there's no way to turn that off #and also cant transfer files to your ipad you have to do it through a third party app and they all have really small storage limits #and another gazillion issues that windows or even android don't have 🧨💣🧨🧨💣🧨💣🧨💣🧨💣🧨💣#hate this thang. i cant believe people told me it was worth spending 600€ on this than buying another cheap ass drawing tablet

going down the ereader rabbithole has been kind of wild like I don't think I ever considered how challenging it would be to find alternatives that tick all the boxes when amazon has the ereader market cornered...so many of my usual buying habits and strategies are just non-applicable bc there's next to no secondhand market for anything that's not a kindle

it's such a shame because I learned that there's all this cool stuff out there, but they're next to impossible to get here because they're still so niche that they end up being incredibly expensive and difficult to find....it sucks so much though bc kindle really needs the competition their products are so limited compared to what's out there internationally

#no one gaf but this is all i've been thinking about for days #fascinating learning about people's reading habits too like there are many ereaders that run android and people love them bc you can run #your favorite reading apps and I'm like. man the kids really aren't downloading their own files anymore huh.#like why would I pay hundreds more for what's basically a tablet with an ereader screen when I could download my own cbz #files and just transfer them to the device. idk it's not worth it to me. and I think there are further issues with update support &#security that will make these readers obsolete more quickly but I'll stfu
