Yawning Python

It was pouring outside and the some half dozen pythons were already snuggling up to each other to get warmth.

The Fujifilm X-S1 used here, equipped with a 2/3-inch sensor and slow lens, was not particularly good in low-light condition. I could only manage to get a 1/20 second shutter speed at ISO 800. Thankfully, the image was sharp enough even at actual size.

Researchers compared reticulated pythons (Malayopython reticulatus), pictured, and Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus) farmed at commercial python farms in Thailand and Vietnam.

Natural history museums hold innumerable misidentified specimens on their shelves. These specimens make their way into databases like GBIF, and muddy data that is used in global-scale analyses and other research drawing on such records. Careful verification of all specimens in a collection holding tens to hundreds of thousands of specimens would be a Herculean task that could take a dozen experts a decade. So, we often rely on spot checks.

Whilst searching our constrictor collection to see if we have any albino snakes (we don’t seem to), I came across this snake that had been identified as a Boa constrictor. It is in fact Malayopython reticulatus, a reticulated python. A quick new label and an update in our database, and I was able to move it over to the right shelf. Now it won’t muddy the waters further, and is able to be referred to by anyone interested in examining a retic.

How many more such cases are haunting our shelves of over 14 million objects? And that’s just the Natural History Museum of Denmark; there are billions of objects in similar collections globally. This is quite literally an astronomically huge problem.

This is a complementary post to my previous one for the Bumbleby Big Bang 2023.

Working with my partner @chaoticevilspacewitch at her fic "The Monster Within Us" was real fun. Fantasy AU are my favourite fics, and illustrate one was a great opportunity to let my imagination go wild on design and costumes.

Character sheets for Lamia!Yang and Villager!Blake. I had fun with Blake, transforming her V1 outfit into a medieval (more or less) one. For Yang, we used an albin Malayopython reticulatus as a reference for the snake body.

This is an illustration I forgot to put in my first post (but you can find it in Erys's fic), we wanted a cozy and warm atmosphere with them totally comfortable with each other.

These are the dress sketches for the ball scene. I follow Erys's description and make some compromises to make them "real".

🤎 The Reticulated Python (Malayopython reticulatus), native to South and Southeast Asia, is the world’s longest snake, and third heaviest. They range from 4′11″ to 21′4″, with one reported case being 32′10″! They’re also fantastic swimmers, having colonized several small islands within its range.

As an aside, I don't know why Clint recommends a Super Dwarf Retic over a carpet python (Morelia sp). Reticulated pythons (Malayopython reticulatus) are banned in a lot of places and regulations don't make exceptions for subspecies or localities; and often have clauses that don't recognize taxonomic splits to prevent people from looking for legal loopholes. (It's highly unlikely reticulated pythons will ever be legal in Alberta and elsewhere regardless of classification.)

I did not know Gargoyle Geckos (Rhacodactylus auriculatus) can regrow their entire tail.

I was telling bestie two years ago about how great Crested Geckos (Correlophus ciliatus) are for vegans when she said she wanted a pet gecko some day. But we put a pin that discussion when she said she wanted to buy a house for a large display enclosure first.

One of the problem with Crested Geckos for beginners is they drop their tail randomly for any reason, then novice keepers get upset that it's their fault. And the tail doesn't grow back. Then sometimes people don't like the appearance of the frog butt. So, the fact Gargoyle Geckos can regrow their tail almost entirely will make me shift my recommendations.

Как питоны переваривают человеческие тела целиком

  Совсем недавно в Индонезии в желудке пятиметрового питона было обнаружено тело 45-летней женщины, пропавшей за сутки до этого. Крупные змеи, обитающие в тропических лесах, редко нападают на людей, но в последние годы были и другие случаи. В прошлом году 8-метровый питон погиб, задавив фермера. В 2018 году другой питон длиной 7 метров проглотил 54-летнюю женщину, а годом ранее это случилось с 25-летней девушкой с 4-метровой змеей.  

Трудная добыча

  Несчастные случаи чаще случаются с питонами и удавами среди людей, которые держат их в дома без необходимых мер безопасности. Но не исключено, что с увеличением вырубки лесов и последующим сокращением естественной среды обитания этих животных летальные нападения увеличатся.     В Индонезии, как и в других тропических странах, существуют сообщества людей, живущих в сельской местности в непосредственной близости от мест естественного обитания этих крупных змей. Вполне вероятно, что питон, убивший женщину из Индонезии, был сетчатым питоном (Malayopython reticulatus), самым долгоживущим видом змей в мире. Они обитают во многих странах Юго-Восточной Азии и не ядовиты. Часто они убивают свою добычу, устраивая ей засаду, а затем обхватывая ее тело. Они не душат ее, но, сжав, блокируют кровообращение, вызывая остановку сердца и, как следствие, смерть. Более мелкие особи питаются в основном грызунами, но также и летучими мышами. В то время как более крупные змеи охотятся на крупных млекопитающих, включая обезьян, свиней и оленей, а также сельскохозяйственных или домашних животных.     Они способны заглатывать добычу, даже очень большую по сравнению с массой их тела, которую они заглатывают целиком. Они способны очень широко открывать челюсти благодаря очень гибким связкам. И обычно заглатывают добычу, начиная с головы. Питонам нелегко проглотить человека. В отличие от типичной добычи змей, грызунов, оленей, кабанов и обезьян. Это потому, что змея легко раздвигает челюсти, чтобы проглотить маленьких животных, которые постепенно увеличиваются в размерах от головы до крупа. Однако, с другой стороны, квадратная форма человеческих плеч может затруднить задачу питонов. Учитывая такое строение плеч, а также большой размер некоторых людей, питоны обычно не нападают на людей. Однако, если человек маленький, а питон большой, поместите его на расстоянии не менее 5 или 6 метров, то есть вероятность, что питон воспримет человека как потенциальную добычу.    

Переварить всё

  Самой удивительной особенностью сетчатых и других видов питонов и змей является способность их желудков переваривать крупную добычу, проглоченную целиком (включая одежду, в случае людей). Для этого они перестраивают свою пищеварительную систему, увеличивая и желудок, и кишечник. Которые в периоды голодания занимают в их организме очень мало места. Но, прежде всего, они производят большое количество очень концентрированного желудочного сока. Который позволяет расщеплять непережеванную добычу, в некоторых случаях имеющую такой же вес, как у змеи, проглотившей ее. Что касается кишечника, то его стенки растягиваются до четырех раз. Чтобы впитать сахара и другие питательные вещества из пищи, попавшей в желудок.     В процессе пищеварения размер сердца змеи также увеличивается, изменение может достигать 40 процентов. Чтобы перекачивать больше крови и, таким образом, увеличивать циркуляцию кислорода в организме. В целом происходит значительное увеличение метаболической активности. Размер других органов, таких как печень и почки, также увеличивается. Столь большие затраты энергии, компенсируемые перевариванием добычи, однако редки в жизни питонов. Переварив крупное животное, они могут до нескольких месяцев обходиться без еды. Опираясь на энергию, полученную от предыдущего приема пищи.  

В заключение

  Найдя вещи лежащими на дорожке, муж жертвы сообщил местным жителям о случае исчезновения жены и попросил помочь в поисках. При их содействии вскоре рядом с брошенными вещами жертвы был обнаружен и сам пятиметровый питон. Его желудок был с��льно увеличен, поэтому предполагалось, что жертву проглотил именно он. Что и подтвердилось, после того, как змею убили и разрезали.     Действительно, подобные инцеденты случаются очень редко. Встречи со змеями чаще встречаются в общинах коренных народов, живущих в тропических лесах со змеями. В результате нападений питонов в период с 1934 по 1973 год погибло 6 человек.       Read the full article

Bằng việc nghiên cứu 2 loài trăn phổ biến ở Thái Lan và Việt Nam, có tên khoa học lần lượt là Malayopython reticulatus và Python bivittatus, các nhà nghiên cứu phát hiện rằng tỷ lệ thức ăn tiêu thụ của trăn so với lượng thịt sản xuất ra thấp hơn nhiều so với các loài được nuôi để lấy thịt khác.

Cụ thể, tỷ lệ này ở trăn đạt 1.2, so với 1.5 đối với cá hồi, 2.8 đối với thịt gia cầm, 6.0 đối với thịt lợn và 10.0 đối với thịt bò. Trong đó, tỷ lệ thấp hơn có nghĩa là hiệu quả cao hơn.Nói cách khác nếu nuôi trăn, người chăn nuôi có thể đạt lợi nhuận cao hơn, với một chi phí thấp hơn dành cho số tiền mua thức ăn.
