Side-note: I have no idea if King in Yellow is an existing Lovecraftian reference or something new because I am not quite *that* far down the uh. I was about to say tentacle rabbit hole but that is SOMETHING ELSE entirely. I am not that well steeped in the Cthulhu mythos.

Petulant Children

Apparently I have an especially soft spot for insufferable kids characters who are in fact just... lost, aren't treated properly by their parents or sort of remotely parental figures and go completely south as a result?

Like Yellow from Malevolent or Jamie from Give Me Away.

Because they behave like they are terrible (and that's the opinion of other characters, too) but in fact they aren't bad at all?

(Funny thing is that they both are from podcasts about headmates of sorts.)

I don't think I need to say anything about Yellow (but of course I'm still going to). It's not exactly a "parent-child" situation and I actually hate the implication that Arthur shaped him completely (and Larson just continued to hone the traits he needed). Like hello, even with amnesia there was some personality in there, Yellow just didn't have enough time to sit and take everything in, gain various experiences to make more informed judgement. John did have this time while Arthur was in a coma. He had time ON HIS OWN to remember and process himself (not as in remember his past - just... himself, what kind of a person he feels he is and what he wants). Yes the result changed him into something completely new but some core things like curiousity stayed intact. He can still be violent, he's still very much murder happy if it means survival, he snaps easily, and he hates lying. Everything that made the King - the King, a dangerous and at times vicious god, is still there. He only changed the point of view, and the rest followed.

Yellow didn't have this opportunity. Arthur was snapping at him and telling him what he was supposed to be (and failed time and again) all the time, cutting many curious questions short (Arthur really is father of the year huh), so any positive traits - positive, joyful for Yellow himself - didn't have much room to grow. Hatred, though... and then there was Larson who didn't even have to make much effort manipulating his rage and hurt to get what he wanted. It's not every day you get to use an eldritch god, amirite? Gods I hate Larson so much

So what do you get when one doesn't remember his past, only some very, very terrible and frightening things he managed to escape, then he's constantly berated, and when he rightfully feels fury, it's being fueled more and more, - AND not a moment to himself, on his own? Exactly. Yellow does say and do terrible things, but... it's not because he's evil or vicious. He's conditioned to behave this way.

Now, to Give Me Away.

Jamie in ep 9 (I'm in the middle of it but needed to dump my thoughts and emotions somewhere first because there were too many) acted completely on impulse, I get it, and it's more because she wants to be a hero and by that to prove to her mom and sibling and to everyone else she is as good as Thalia or even BETTER. I know. It's a very selfish impulse. But it a) doesn't change the fact that she's still trying to save everyone's lives and b) values her life LESS than validation from her family and people around, and this is fucking tragic. I just want to hug this kid (yes I'm 31 so I'm allowed to say a 22 yo is a kid, more so when she behaves like one) and get her some therapy, gods know she needs it (and will probably resist kicking and screaming so she needs to see the necessity herself first).

I mean. Whatever the reasoning, she can still die.

And yet she's going along with the plan.

Although she's really her father's daughter, and I'd say she at least developed SOME spite. Graham is so detached I have to wonder at times if he's even there at all, it feels like most the time he would be happy to surrender the body and mind to Joshua completely, unless one of the triggers like Jamie is up. The way it feels... Graham wouldn't mind being in a computer, probably. Just exploring stuff and thinking it over. He already spent most the time inside his head by the time of the divorce. He's pretty desperate because he doesn't know what to do with his life, to the point when it feels like he doesn't want to live all that much in general but dying is a bit extra for him, too. One of the rare cases when I want to say "Grow some balls ffs!" but then can't get rid if the thought that if he did he might have killed himself, which is... no.

Jamie is wrecking havoc wherever she goes, appears to not care about morals much, but in fact she's just as empty inside and desperate to be SOMETHING, something meaningful. Graham finds fulfilment in his inner values, so he actually doesn't care much what everyone else thinks - as long as it's meaningful enough by his own standards, it's enough. Jamie seeks outside approval. In any case, they both are wrecked mentally.

Having BPD, I know how it feels. I really feel for them both, their cases are pretty extreme exactly because they didn't find the ways? didn't search? didn't have an opportunity? to fix those neural paths to fill the yearning void inside in a non-harmful way. That's why their cases are tragic to me. Instead of making their choice out of pure moral values and desire to save others they want to save themselves this way. Only it isn't gonna work.

The more I listened, the more the pressure inside grew: I want to scream at Graham sometimes that he's not getting better this way, he's only digging his pit much, much deeper. And now Jamie does the same, although in a different way. They both don't need to do what they are doing, they need help. It's painful to listen.

I don't know why Give Me Away strikes me so much. I didn't have such a visceral emotional reaction to stories for quite a while.

Also Joshua should be thankful for Graham because he really needed that mental slap. Being too full of himself is a road to ruin, and his hubris can bury not just himself but all his people along with him, and then some.

so you've convinced me and I *really really really* want to start watching the animated SW stuff. But there's like 7 massive seasons? any suggestions for how to break it down into easily watchable portions, or is there like a good place in the show to jump in at?

I think for The Clone Wars, it is kinda important to watch the movie (tho it is quite lacking in quality beinh the first SW animated content, yet we get our introduction to Ahsoka, Rex, and Ventress here). But what I've done mostly to catch up quickly and understand the first season is to watch clips in Youtube and read wookiepedia to fill on the holes. But this risks you on getting spoilers of things you might not want to know (I bathe in spoilers so I don't have a problem with that lol).

What I think is important for season 1 are episodes:

1-5 (Malevolence Arc)

8-12 (introduces Hondo and features Ventress)

15-22 (includes Virus arc, Ryloth Arc, and the season finale)

Season 2 has more important episodes and it begins to be more plot focused

1-8 (Cad Bane arc and Geonosis arc)

12-22 (Mandalore arc up to the end with Boba Fett's arc)

Season 3

1-3 (Kamino arc and Toydaria episode, both takes place before episodes of season 1, will elaborate latee)

5-7 (Mandalore arc)

9-22 (Very vital arcs, lots of force stuff, Tarkin introduction, Nightsisters introduction which will lead to Maul. The finale 21-22 may not be as important plot wise but it is good Ahsoka exposition)

Season 4

By this season I think the whole season should be watched. It is quite worthwhile and introduces many main pillars of conflict in Season 7

But episodes 11 - 13 (Zygerrian Arc) mostly focuses on Anakin's feelings against the Zygerrian slavers than plot and it won't hurt to skip this arc

Season 5

Similar to season 5, but episodes 10-13 (droid squad arc) may be skippable, only it introduces a character that will appear in Rebels.

The rest are really important

Seaskn 6 and 7 are less intimidating as they only consist 10+ episodes and therefore is less filler than the previous seasons.

Ohh also I have to note that some episodes are not in chronological order (only like 5 iirc) so if you want to watch the episodes in chronological order you could look up lists in the internet for it. But they would allude to the time period in the opening speech.

For Rebels, each seasons have maximum 20+ episodes and while it may seem filler most of the eps are quite important especially with new characters we don't know. But some of the filler eps are more to bring Original Trilogy guest stars and its not that numerous. But even if an ep feels filler, it'll reveal itself to not be filler when the time is right.

Am watching leverage rn and I'm on 2x04 (the fairy godparents job) and here's a moment during the briefing where Hardison is explaining how he spliced into the fbi's surveillance feed and it cuts to Parker and Eliot (sharing a chair) smiling fondly and looking at Hardison as he explains and I would gif it or sc it if I could but I can't so talented people please I need to rewatch this moment over and over without the Sophie/Nate drama going on

Despite what many thought, goth managed to persist as a subculture in the pop zeitgeist. Who could have predicted that something dreamed up by British youths obsessed with death, punk and eyeliner could be around in 2020? World Goth Day is a thing and we’re here to celebrate it today.

As we have explored in the past, goth has been a mainstay of the modern Latinx music landscape since shortly after its inception. There are goth scenes in Latin America that continue to be fertile ground for the music. However, as much as the style has proliferated away from its birthplace in England, it has transcended time by adapting itself by leaving some of its sonic rigor behind.

There was a time when goth music and goth style were mutually exclusive. Over time, the music began broadening its sounds while their fashion sense took hold of audiences that were not necessarily invested in the music itself. That has allowed goth to propel itself to different arts, disciplines, and even memes. Indeed, making fun of darketos has made an enduring entity instead of debilitating it.

As such, goth continues to be a source of inspiration for Latinxs to this day. Not only are there bands keeping the (cold) flame alive by following in the footsteps of The Cure or Sisters of Mercy; there are also artists who find inspiration in the primordial aspects of the goth aesthetics. A prime example is urbano superproducer Tainy, who regularly rocks out Nine Inch Nails t-shirts and even dressed up like Marilyn Manson for Halloween last year.

For this year’s World Goth Day, we assembled a list of goth acts worth checking out. As such, the list includes keepers of the faith as well as fusionists doing interesting things with elements of the genre. As diverse as the list might be, it’s all united by one singular vision of the beautiful, ecstatic macabre.

Cazzu

It shouldn’t take you long to understand that the Argentine urbano artist is one with the Hot Topic mindforce. Her logo is a skull-and-bones with pigtails, for crying out loud! However, the influence of the genre doesn’t stop there. Her music often features melancholic guitar like prime-era My Chemical Romance and even nods to Evanescence here and there.

Dani Shivers

Hailing from Tijuana, Dani Shivers remains an underrated queen of lo-fi dark pop. With every subsequent release, she pairs her knack for pop melodies with simple yet atmospheric keyboards, which can make even the blackest heart smile, at least a little.

Romeo Diablos

With a tag like “brujacore” attached to the music, it’s hard not to make the case for Romeo Diablos’ place in the current spooky urbano subgenre. The producer cites both Daddy Yankee and industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle as influences of his noisy experiments meet culo-shaking beats.

PHI

Continuing the legacy of acts that combine folk-based songwriting, atmospheric darkness and penchant for ecstatic washes of noise, Guadalajara, Mexico’s PHI are one of the most interesting bands playing around the edges of the goth label. Hypnotic, morbid and strangely life-affirming music in a single package.

Something Obscura

Peru has given us some of the OGs in the goth genre and the scene thrives to this day thanks to bands like Lima’s Something Obscura, a band that combines monochromatic soundscapes with brooding vocals that respects the genre’s roots and adds it’s personality to it.

Lust Era

This San Juan, Puerto Rico duo is one of the most prolific bands on this list. With more than 30 releases since 2013, including albums, EPs, singles, and alternate projects. They have explored music from the intangible and slow-burning to rocking melodies for results that are both menacing and fun.

Saturno Devorando

While the Costa Rican duo of Fiamma Aleotti and Ronald Bustamante Medina might not recall the more familiar tones of The Cure or Bauhaus, the heavy sorrow in their music and adventurous spirit puts them in league with the classics of the dark mascara set.

Meldamor

Dave Parley might be better known as half of the cholo goth legends Prayers, but his other band pays tribute to another dark corner of the scene. With his wife Mel he forms Meldamor, a fun throwback that gives us some premium danceable malevolence.

Kelman Duran

A contender for urbano goth producer newcomer crown, Kelman Duran has made Kanye West and techno titans Demdike Stare fans of his slightly abstract take on dembow. This Dominicano producer shows that the thick mist of darkness can easily be applied to avant electronics.

La Procesión De Lo Infinito

Colombia’s La Procesión De Los Infinito is proof that goth en español can be as somber and menacing as its English counterpart. In the process of their career, the band have accumulated fans around the world.

Magnus Relisten Eps 21 & 22

Episode 21: Freefall Case #0022010 Statement of Moira Kelly, regarding the disappearance of her son, Robert Kelly.

This episode is... its alright? The core concept of a scary skydive is a good one, as thats the sort of scenario that could really freak me out, but i think it drops the ball in quite a few places. For one, the fact that the narrator is the mother rather than the victim may have been a poor choice. It adds to the mystery of the situation in a way that i really like, but it means that our experience of the main horror setpiece, the infinite blue sky, is kind of filtered through too many retellings and loses some of the visceral quality it could have had. I would have loved to have heard a first person recounting of Robert’s terror, rather than a skeptical mother trying to understand it. I do love the scene where we get the mother’s reaction to Robert coming home, though. Lets talk about the actual scares, though. I think these have a couple flaws. First, the infinite sky. This bit works alright, i think. The idea of an infinite space can be scary, but the fact that the ground vanishes so thuroughly as to seemingly no longer exist kind of detracts from some of the scary aspects of skydiving. It doesnt help that pure blueness in all directions is kind of an uninteresting visual rather than a scary one. I think it needed some kind of way to give a sense of perspective, or maybe a shroud of clouds or something where you cant quite be sure the ground isnt eventually going to hit you. Something about this scene seems to kind of neuter its ability to induce vertigo. Still, the time distortion, the wrongness of it, and the sheer infinite nothing create enough of an unsettling mood that the scene still works, i think. I also quite like that it is horror-in-broad-daylight. perfect for a story about a malevolent sky. The second supernatural element, though i dont think works. Obviously they were going for horror surrounding a break in reality thats literally indescribable, but the fact that Moira can’t describe it ends up being the fatal flaw, as her attempt, “the sky ate him”, doesn’t really land. if anything, its a bit silly, really.

Talking about Moira herself for a bit, i think she’s actually the best part of the episode. yes, i know, i just said she decreased its effectiveness by not witnessing the skydive herself, and that’s still true, but in every other way shes a good choice of narrator. A perspective from outside of Robert’s head lets us see the visceral of his terror and trauma, how it effects his behaviors and actions. It also creates a very interesting mystery to the episode: we don’t know exactly what Robert was doing in his time with the skydiving company, so we don’t know how legitimate the company appeared, and can’t tell how much time Robert actually lost during his dive? was he really up there for just 15 minutes, with the supernatural prolonging his experience of the time? or was he up there for ages and ages, with his fellow skydiver lying about the time and his missing months covered up by his lack of connection with his parents? eh, its probably the former, but the latter is a really interesting idea and it cant quite be disproven because of the perspective of the story.

im going to call this a 3/10. it has interesting bits, but it has a lot of pretty fatal flaws. still, a few parts of it unsettled me quite a bit.

SPOILER PARAGRAPH: The Vast is one of the entities i find the scariest, so its a shame that the first really Vast focused scare on the show isn’t that great. (yes, i know, Ex Altiora is the Vast too, but Page Turner quadruple-dips entities and is about the mystery of Jurgen Leitner rather than any fear of heights or large spaces, so it barely counts). Not to worry though, as Simon Fairchild, the old man from the episode, will come back a lot and bring with him some exceptionally terrifying episodes. The one in the cable car comes to mind especially clearly here as it basically takes the same core fear as this episode but does it waaaaay better. Simon, who we’ll meet on tape later, is also one of the best avatars on the show, because he’s a really weird one. Jovial, funny, and clever, yet responsible for some of the most horrifying things to happen on the show. Great character. As for the Vast itself though, sadly we don’t get much of its philosophical side. This episode is “fear of heights and wide spaces” in the most literal sense, so theres not much to work with, though we do get a bit of time manipulation here which is one aspect of the Vast which we kinda can infer exists but don’t really see. The Vastness of time is one of those existential fears that i absolutely adore, id love to see an episode on it someday. I guess we do get it a bit with the revelation that Simon is by far the oldest avatar on the show, i believe clocking in at 500-something years old.  I suppose there is one more thing to mention: Harriet Fairchild. Does she ever show up again? I think all we really get is Simon saying that the Fairchild family isn’t actually blood related, instead taking on the names to fake it. an odd little loose end, i guess.

Episode 22: Colony Case #0161203 Statement of Martin Blackwood, regarding an encounter with a being he believes to have once been Jane Prentiss. Statement taken directly from subject.

Ok this episode is pretty dang good. Lets just jump in with the best part: the description of Jane Prentiss. Absolute nightmare fuel, and its enhanced by our getting it directly from the horses, i mean, Martin’s mouth. not really much more to say on that point really, its the horror of Squirm,  but even worse. Just listen to that scene again if you’re questioning it. Now, on to the rest of the episode, which is like, actually the majority of the runtime. We get introduced to Martin (yay, new voiced character!), then have a bit of initial buildup with Martin in the spooky basement, which doesnt actually really go anywhere. Then we get a return to the basement and the scary scene. I think this double basement visit is an unfortunate side effect of continuity; we know Martin’s follow up on the Vittery case made it back to the institute because we hear about it in Arachnophobia, so Martin can’t actually meet Jane until he goes back for a not the most well thought out reason. Basically what i’m saying is that the build up is less of a build and more of a drag. Anyways, after the great Jane scare we get martin stuck in his apartment, which is definitely creepy and suspenseful, but a bit of a step down from our Prentiss statement. Theres goods and bads here. Good: Martin’s paranoia, his descriptions of a hellish inability to sleep and phantom itches, Bad: the slight absurdity of it all, especially the peaches bit, kinda pulling down the creepiness with humor that shouldn’t quite be there. A nitpick, i know, but still. Anyways Jane arbitrarily leaves at the end but implies that she’s just toying with the characters. Overall, id say this episode is pretty average, plotwise, but then the actual description of Jane, again, is just so good and its so obviously the focus of the episode that it can kind of give the rest a pass!

So, narrator time, lets talk Martin. The long awaited punching bag of the archival crew, here in the flesh giving the first full episode appearance of an archival staff member. Lets start with a shoutout to Alexander J. Newall, TMA’s director and probably some other roles on the show. He has a perfect voice for getting across that youthful, slightly bumbling, but deeply likable character that Martin brings to the episode. And thats really great, because it really makes you believe in Martin’s somewhat poor decision making, while also really still allowing you to empathize with the character’s plight. Honestly, Newall’s Martin might be my favorite voice performance on the entire show. At very least top 5. And, yes, in case you couldnt tell, i really like Martin, even just taking into account this episode alone. Speaking of liking martin, i really like the moment where Jon, for all his issues with his assistant, still ends up rather shaken by Jane’s cryptic texts and offers him a safe haven. Its perhaps the most human moment we’ve gotten from the character so far.

8/10. As i said, a lot of the plot is average, but its boosted up by a great moment and excellent voice performance. can’t honestly bring it to a 9 given those issues, though, so this will have to do. 

SPOILER PARAGRAPH: going to keep this brief, because meta-plot wise this is actually a fairly simple episode. It does one very big thing, of course: establishes Jane Prentiss as an active threat not just within the statements but directly to our Archivist and his crew. This is a major paradigm shift on the show, one that honestly might have fit the mid-season finale if we didn’t have that two-parter, and its really the first sign of the meta-plot that will eventually become the primary focus of the show. Also a sign of this is the first really strong interpersonal moment on the show, with the relationship between Jon and Martin. Its not there yet, but it eventually becomes the core relationship of the show, and even now its beginning to show signs of what it will become. Outside of the personal impacts of the episode on our characters, though, theres not really much meta in this episode. Jane shows up, she’s a creepy horror monster for a while, she leaves. no clue to her goal or insights into the true nature of the Corruption. pretty standard affair.

Hi, I'm @tutelele. Do you by any chance happen to have an idea of what's the difference between mercy killing and purifying a dragon *in the anime*? The only purified dragon going back to their original seraph form we see is Symonne. The others just explode, like in episode 22. Am I being dense here?

I’m not sure why anime-Tiamat in ep 22 didn’t show us the body of a Seraph at the end after the purification.  (Yay for the anime being internally inconsistent as usual.)  Because in theory, purification is supposed to be the removal of malevolence and restoring the hellion’s body to its original form.  In theory.  It made sense we didn’t get a body for the dragon zombie since it was, well, a zombie, but anime-Tiamat should have given us one - if it was in fact a purification as the anime was insisting on.

And I’m not quite sure I’d call their charge through the dragon horde mercy killing, just because there was a lot of character growth and development and story that went into Sorey coming around to the idea in the first place, whereas here he’s just ready to charge into the fray without so much as a “I’m sorry I couldn’t save you”, especially when he’s being adamant that Dezel not kill any of the dragons mere moments later.  And you could say he wasn’t aiming to be lethal, but given how there were arrows going through a dragon’s chest . . . I’m not quite sure how else to call it other than aiming for the kill, lol.
