Escuché hace años "Sabicas Rock Encounter With Joe Beck" pero lo recordaba mal, como un maridaje que no acababa de cuajar en algo satisfactorio. Ahora lo he vuelto a escuchar, en ejemplar tocadito, y creo que buena parte de él funciona muy bien. He leído que el GRAN Sabicas dijo en alguna ocasión que el disco se grabó en 1966 y no vio la luz hasta cuatro años más tarde, y algunas fuentes lo fechan en ese año, pero yo no lo creo así. Estoy de acuerdo con los que piensan que este disco está grabado a finales de los sesenta o en el propio 1970 por su sonoridad eléctrica y sicodélica, por su vibra cargada de fuzz y wah wah. En 1966 ni en broma. Arriba se puede escuchar ese más que interesante disco completo.

El maestro de la guitarra flamenca debió tener un despiste o le falló la memoria. Es curioso, porque leo que Sabicas despreciaba este disco, y parece ser que el gran productor de flamenco y derivados Ricardo Pachón contaba que Sabicas incluso se negó a cobrar los derechos de autor correspondientes. A lo mejor participó por una cuestión monetaria, no lo sé, lo que sí sé es que tanto Sabicas como Manitas de Plata fueron guitarristas muy apreciados por colegas del rock ácido de la Costa Oeste, como John Cipollina de Quicksilver Messenger Service (Montoya es Ramón Montoya y "Paco" podría ser una referencia a un primerizo Paco de Lucía).

Además de Sabicas y Joe Beck, en el LP tocó el bajo un tal Anthony Levin (se supone que el Tony Levin de King Crimson, no está bien documentado), Donald McDonald la batería, Warren Bernhardt el órgano, Diego Castellón la guitarra rítmica española y Domingo Alvarado cantó. A lo que hay que añadir un zapateado que algunos indican que es el mismo que Queti Clavijo bailó en "Abajo el Telón", la película de Cantinflas de 1955, y que hace unos meses @karime2701 atribuyó a su tía Carmen Algaba Amaya “la Chuny“. Bailase quién lo bailase, no tuvieron a bien incluirla en créditos.

Merece mucho la pena ver el vídeo de abajo en el que el enorme Sabicas, gitano de Pamplona, explica estupendamente como se inició en el mundo del flamenco cuando sólo era un niño.

31: Manolo // Guitara de oro

I don’t know shit about playing guitar. Sometimes this is a bad thing (e.g. when I would like to play a song on the guitar), but sometimes it’s nice to gape at a wonderful thing without the slightest comprehension. Flamenco guitar turns me into a sweaty guy in an Affliction t-shirt yelling at a clubbering MMA brawl. I turn to people trying to have a regular conversation with me and say things like “AAA-YOOOOO” and “Manolo is a bad motherfucker.” I think that is just as appropriate a reaction to the righteous chops Manolo displays on 1976’s Guitara de oro as anything I would feel comfortable doing at a metal show.

Manolo was a Romani who lived in Catalonia, allegedly the nephew of flamenco legend Manitas de Plata, and at 35 looks like he got all the shipments of manhood Canada Post told me were undeliverable to my address. Dashing instrumentals like “Cigala rumba” (“Rumba Lobster”—yes! YES!) make me feel like exploding through stands of clementines in a rustic marketplace ahead of clumsy local policia. Soulful solo piece “Guitara de oro” (“Guitar of Gold”) causes me to nod thoughtfully and think, “The title is fair.” He finishes nearly every song with an emphatically strummed flourish that sounds like it does as much violence to the instrument as if he had simply dropped it on the floor.

It doesn’t seem like Manolo released much after Guitara de oro until the mid-‘80s, when he recorded billed as a duo with his son eldest Ricao (who backs him up here, alongside younger brother Casé). It’s not easy to find a ton about him online but Manolo, and Guitara de oro in particular, still has his admirers—the only video I could find of him performing from this era has 1.2 million views and dozens of gushing remembrances in the comments. Wherever life took him after this highwater mark, he left behind a fine testament to his craft in this LP.

Venía por los guisos y casi me quedo con los quesos. Y es que tenia pendiente la cuchara de @restauranteamos y los reconfortantes platos de @mauro.lamas. Hoy además, estaba el mentor, el gran @_jesussanchez y ha sido una comida apoteósica. Previniendo los subsiguientes excesos he empezado con la deliciosa menestra de la casa, que lleva hasta hinojo, y se envuelve en un cremoso caldo del cocido que es un regalo por sí solo. Regalo metafórico porque el real ha sido el de un nueva delicia: en la mesa, un plato con un denso y poderoso guiso de manitas con foie y toques de patata y en cazuela (de plata, por supuesto) aparte unas exuberantes colmenillas con salsa de foie. La mezcla de todo da un resultado lleno de sabores en el que triunfan esas crujientes y excelsas setas y el terciopelo del foie. Pero no se quedan atrás las lentejas con corzo, desmenuzado y embolado, que se deshacen en la boca ni esas espléndidas alubias rojas que son los caricos. Los guisan con perdiz y vegetales y están deliciosos. Todo me ha encantado pero qué decir de los quesos que aún no había probado. Vale la pena venir por ellos. Todos del norte y perfectamente escogidos de refinados productores. Soy muy francés (solo) en esto de los quesos pero, con estos, me ha dado un ataque de nacionalismo. Una vez más, perfecto. Pero la gente no acaba d enterarse. In the 70th episode of our podcast, RBP's Zooming triumvirate talk about the Who's Live at Leeds — "the greatest live album ever made," in many people's H.O. — as it reaches its half-century. Referencing Geoffrey Cannon's unabridged Guardian review from May 1970, Mark & Barney relive memories of seeing the Who live and — with Jasper — explore what made the band such a uniquely powerful live unit.

The two other giants of '60s British pop feature in free pieces by KRLA Beat's Nikki "Eden" Wine, who attempts to explain Beatlemania in 1965 and hangs around a Rolling Stones session in Hollywood in 1966. Mark puts "the Beat" ("America's Pop Music NEWSpaper") into historical context and describes how some of its key female contributors wound up on RBP.
