Chikage: Hey, I’ve been waiting for you.

Misumi: Give Chikage’s handbag back!

Thief: W-Who the hell are you!?

Even the police! Damn it, I’ll definitely run away…!

*Short  timeskip*

Thief: I’ve come this far, they’ll no doubt…

Chikage: I was allowed to go ahead of you.

Thief: What…!?

Misumi: Ahaha, somehow this feels like that time right! Chikage is really cool~! (*)

Chikage: Yeah. That was when we were chasing a thief in front of the dorm right. 

Thief: Why do you always go ahead of me wherever I go no matter what…!

Chikage: I’m good at chasing after people.

Chikage: …Well then, may I have my deposited things back.

Thief: Deposited things… So that’s you, the four-eye the other day! This machine, no way, a GPS!?

Misumi: I told you–, just give up~!

Thief: There’s no way I’d let you catch me! If this is a GPS, I’ll win if I throw it and run away!

Omi: …That’s enough.

Thief: I got caught!? If that’s the case I’ll break through––.

Omi: I told you this is enough!!

Thief: Eek!?

Misumi: Ah– You’ve been knocked down!

Chikage: Haha, Omi’s strength is amazing.

Policeman: Secure, secure! We have arrested the remaining member of the thieves gang…

*Shifts to ceremony*

Kai: Omi-nii, is it really fine for us to receive a letter of appreciation?

Gaku: That’s right–. Chikage-san and Misumi-san deserve this more than us, don’t they?

Omi: That’s not it, thanks to you guys, we were able to arrest the thieves gang. Not only the police, but Chikage-san and Misumi were also grateful.

Kai: Y-Yeah, that’s great but…

Announcer: Well then, Fushimi Omi-san, Kai-san, Gaku-san, please come to the podium.

*Short timeskip*

Gaku: Fuu~, it ended safely–!

Omi: Haha, somehow I was a little embarrassed.

Police staff: Excuse me, do you have a moment?  There are a few requests I’d like to ask MANKAI Company-san.

Omi: Not to us, but to our theater troupe? What is it?

Police staff: Actually…

*Shifts to Veludo Way* 

Omi: I didn’t expect the three of us would be the chief of police for a day…

Misumi: I think Director-san and Sakyo support us a lot!

Chikage: Well, we were told that we can also advertise our theater troupe.

Omi: This is a theater town, so they told us that a collaboration with a theater troupe would help promote crime prevention…

Chikage: But I think that police staff suggested it simply because he is a fan of MANKAI Company.

Misumi: Anyway, now that it’s decided, let’s do our best~! Salute!

Omi: Haha, you’re right.

A3! Main Story: Part 4 - Act 13: Budding Spring - Episode 9: Going back to the start

Girl A: Thank you very much~!

Girl B: We’ll be supporting you from now on, too!

Chikage: Be careful on your way home.

Young man: You have once again made me think that actors are amazing! Thank you so much!

Youth: That was fun~!

Citron: For us, too!

Towa: Thank you so much!

Izumi: Thank you for participating. We were able to come up with a wonderful project because of you, Towa-kun.

Towa: To be honest, I was really hesitant about participating. Failing in front of Masumi-kun would’ve been embarrassing.

Towa: But I’m glad I took the plunge!

Towa: I understood what kind of scenery Masumi-kun and the others look at from the top of the stage…

Towa: I think I understand more about how a theater play is made, and about everyone who works on it, now.

Towa: A new world has opened before me!

Tsuzuru: Hearing you say that makes all of it worth it, right, Masumi?

Masumi: Well, you did your best.

Towa: All this from my oshi…! 

Izumi: Come see our play next.

Citron: We’ll be waiting!

Towa: Yes! I absolutely will! I’ll be going now!

[Towa leaves]

Rento: Our first event was a big success.

Akashi: Even though… I don’t get many opportunities like this… I had fun, too…

Rento: Us backstage staff usually don’t have any contact with the audience.

Izumi: Thank you for your help today, you two!

Rento: Call me if ya do anything like this again.

Akashi: Me too…

Izumi: Of course!

Sakuya: We’ll be counting on you!

Izumi: … It looked like everyone was having fun.

Sakuya: It made me think of the first time I stood on stage.

Tsuzuru: Yeah, it was really nostalgic.

Citron: I could feel the chills in everyone’s hearts~!

Itaru: We were like that too, at the start.

Chikage: When you think about it like that, we’ve improved a lot.

Masumi: I was better than that.

Tsuzuru: That part of you hasn’t changed at all.

Sakuya: At first, just saying one line made me nervous, and I was constantly conscious of what the next line was.

Tsuzuru: Right, right! I kept thinking about how I had to move during a scene, and then I panicked because I missed everyone else’s lines.

Citron: I could do it when I was practicing alone, but when we were all together, I kept fumbling!

Masumi: You still do that.

Itaru: If my past self saw me now, he’d be surprised.

Chikage: Because you didn’t think you’d dedicate so much of yourself to acting?

Itaru: Something like that. But isn’t that true for you too, Senpai?

Chikage: I can’t deny that.

Izumi: Towa-kun’s eyes were sparkling as he told me that a new world opened before him.

Masumi: Even though he was nervous at first, he enjoyed himself.

Sakuya: I was like that too when I first decided to join MANKAI Company.

Sakuya: I’m really glad I took the courage to jump into that new world.

Tsuzuru: I remember hesitating a lot before taking that step, too. It got so busy after I joined that I didn't have time to think about it, though. 

Masumi: It felt like fate for me, so I didn’t hesitate.

Izumi: Ahaha, that’s how it was. How nostalgic.

Sakuya: Also, this made me want to do RomiJuli again!

Citron: I know, right! I kept almost saying the lines myself!

Itaru: IKR.

Izumi: Should we hold a run for it again?

Tsuzuru: If we do that, I’d like to give Chikage-san a proper role.

Citron: And I want to appear a little more!

Izumi: Right, as Citron-kun is now, he can play all kinds of roles. 

Chikage: But if everything else remains the same, it won’t feel fresh because it’s been reran multiple times.

Sakuya: If we’re going to do it, we’ll have to do it once the Fleur Cup is over, right?

Itaru: Since RomiJuli is such a catchy subject, it’s got movie and ballet adaptations, and it’s easy for people who aren’t into theater to get into it.

Itaru: I think it fits our aim of going back to the basics.

Izumi: But participating in the Fleur Cup with a repeat performance is too risky…

Tsuzuru: … Oh.

Izumi: ?

Tsuzuru: How does a sequel sound, then?

Tsumugi: Good work on the workshop. How did it go?

Sakuya: Everyone was hesitant at first, but as soon as their voices and gestures started coming out, they started having fun!

Tsuzuru: Watching them inspired me.

Tasuku: Sounds like it became a good opportunity for you to look at acting objectively again.

Tsumugi: I want to try it with the Winter Troupe, too. It sounds like we could learn a lot. 

Homare: We should make some time for poetry when we do that.

Tasuku: That would change the subject.

Homare: In the sense of studying lines, I believe studying poetry, which emphasizes the rhythm of words, would be helpful.

Guy: That makes sense. Shakespeare was both a playwright and a poet.

Hisoka: … We can light a bonfire and roast marshmallows at the end.

Tsuzuru: You say it like it’s a recreational activity at the end of camping, but this is just your hobby.

Sakuya: It’ll be a workshop that highlights each of your unique characters.

Izumi: Let’s plan one again when we have the chance.

Sakyo: We’re all here now.

Izumi: Let’s start the meeting, then.

Izumi: This meeting is about the Spring Troupe’s performance for 1Q of the Fleur Cup.

Izumi: After the workshop, we got to talking about going back to the start…

Citron: Simply put, we wanted to do RomiJuli again!

Sakyo: You mean you’re going to rerun RomiJuli?

Tsuzuru: No, not exactly. I was thinking about writing a sequel…

Tsuzuru: The RomiJuli that can be done by us thanks to our growth— One that will be depicting the future of the RomiJuli we debuted with.

Tsuzuru: I think it’s something we can do because we live in the future of that time.

Sakuya: This is also our first attempt at a sequel, so I think it will prove to be a challenge.

Sakuya: Of course, we really want to perform RomiJuli again, but…

Chikage: We also have to make sure this performance is a stepping stone towards the Fleur Cup.

Itaru: If we don’t collect votes, we won’t be able to connect to the next performance…

Itaru: Since this isn’t only our problem, we wanted to hear everyone’s opinion.

Tenma: A sequel to the debut performance… I’d have never thought of that. But I understand the feeling of wanting to go back to that again.

Tsumugi: You can’t help but wonder how you would perform this role now. It always feels fresh, no matter how many times you do it.

Kazunari: Since it’s the first one, it’s prolly the one where the theater company and the troupe’s colors are most prominent~

Sakyo:  Despite how rough it might’ve been, it can also be said that it’s what determined the Reborn MANKAI Company’s direction.

Banri: Since it’s the first one, it’s been rerun a lot. That’s also a plus, yeah?

Juza: Since you have a solid foundation of your role, you can approach it from a different perspective.

Juza: And above all, it’ll be rewarding to connect the dots from the debut performance to the sequel.

Homare: The parts that have changed and the parts that haven’t changed…You get a chance to express on stage those things that come to you naturally as you live day-to-day.

Guy: This will be a good experience for you as actors. It will help you grow.

Tasuku: I think getting to experience the long life of one of your characters is a precious opportunity. 

Taichi: And the OG RomiJuli fans will be real happy with this!

Omi: The fact that the original was so well received is also advantageous.

Azami: It’ll also be easy to imagine the world setting.

Yuki: What I’m worried about is that since they’re the same characters, it might lack a sense of freshness.

Kazunari: It’d be good to be conscious of that and make changes in the visuals.

Itaru: And there’s also the jinx that sequels can’t surpass the originals.

Banri: We can do more in the lighting and sound department now, all we can do is show ‘em how much we’ve leveled up.

Yuki: When I think of my past self as a rival, I get a little fired up.

Kazunari: We can’t lose~!

Sakyo: We also need to satisfy viewers that haven’t seen the first performance. That’s quite a gap from a stand-alone.

Kumon: But, I’m jealous, Chikage-san! I want my own role in the Summer Troupe’s first performance, too!

Misumi: And I’m curious what the Genie from “Water me!” is up to!

Muku: I understand! Just like how we’re living in the future compared to those days, I want to see what they’re doing in their future, too.

Azuma: If we’re making a sequel for the Spring Troupe’s debut performance, we should do that for the Summer Troupe and the others, too.

Tenma: That’s where we’ll end up, naturally.

Juza: I wanna put myself in Lansky’s shoes once more…

Omi: I’ve got some sudden motivation now.

Sakyo: We will only go through with this if the Spring Troupe’s sequel doesn’t fail.

Homare: Choosing to do a “sequel” in a situation where we absolutely can’t lose and also have to deal with a lot of first-time viewers is quite brave.

Izumi: That’s true.

Tsuzuru: I-I’m feelin’ the pressure…

Hisoka: … All troupes have to make sure they can connect to the one coming after.

Guy: Following the Spring Troupe in 1Q is the Summer Troupe in 2Q, and then the Autumn Troupe in 3Q and the Winter Troupe in 4Q. We must all contribute to the ranking in order to make it to the finals.

Tsumugi: But isn’t it reassuring to know that the initial performance of RomiJuli will be by our side in such a situation?

Sakuya: Exactly… Because this was our “start” as the Spring Troupe.

Citron: It was the Spring Troupe, and the Reborn MANKAI Company’s first ever adventure!

Masumi: If we can’t do this, the other troupes won’t be able to do it, either.

Itaru: Pretty much.

Chikage: I think it’s worth the bet.

Tsuzuru: No choice but to go for it…

Izumi: Then, let’s make each performance for the New Fleur Award a sequel to the troupes’ initial performances!

Izumi: (With this, we’re taking our first step towards the New Fleur Award)

Izumi: (All that’s left is the same as usual, we come together and prepare for the performances. I hope we can get through it without any troubles…)

Description: A lighting staff introduced by Yuzo. He’s bad at communication but his sense for lighting that was learnt from his grandfather is extraordinary. A scaredy cat who sometimes fumble with his words when nervous.

Name: Kinozaki Rento (cv. Imai Fumiya)

Occupation: PA • Owner of a live (concert) house

Description: A junior of the school the manager, Matsukawa, attended and all in all simply admires the manager. His old friend’s way of speaking has seemingly passed on to him as he often accidentally speaks in a Kansai-like accent.

Tsumugi & Sakuya Talk (A3! Last Planet ep.01: Mini conversation)

SPOILERS for Act 11!!

Tsumugi: "Apprehend him! Don't let him take off!" Sakuya: In this scene, Saku is with Doug, so as for the movements... Tsumugi: You're right; then let's talk it over with the ensemble cast comprising the space police during our next collective practice session, too. Sakuya: Okay! Sakuya: The manager will participate in tonight's leader's meeting and make all the arrangements, right? Tsumugi: Yeah, he said he got a call from Tetsurou-san as well. Sakuya: I am once again reminded that a stage is not just created by the troupe members, but through the efforts of a lot of people. Sakuya: The director, the manager, the backstage staff, everyone from the ensemble... Sakuya: Hakkaku-san, Madoka-kun, everyone from the first generation, all those supporting us... Tsumugi: That's true. It's not just the 24 members from MANKAI Company's 4 troupes. Tsumugi: Let's craft a Mankai play with all those who are involved in the performance. Sakuya: Yes! Let's join forces with everyone and put on the best of plays!

So I just saw the announcement about the EN server shutting down or at least dicontinued (hopefully just for now) and I might just burst into tears 🥲 I want to put my thoughts or rather feelings of the journy up until now on here to come down but maybe also as some form of comfort for anyone who needs it? It's very long and might have some broken english as it's not my first language so do keep it in mind please 😅

Anyways, I started A3! last year on march 7th because I saw a youtube video of people cosplaying Sakuya and Sakyo. At taht point, I already knew of A3! somewhere in my distant memories back when it was JP only. I decided to try out the game since I was getting bored of my current mobile games and the few reviews I could find of it were relatively positive. I had no idea just what a big part of my life this game was about the become 🤧

Btw I'm listening to some A3! songs right now, specifically Sakuya's 2nd character song, and it's not helping me 😢 So at the time, lockdown just started 2 days ago, which left me with a lot of time playing it and, I kid you not, I gulfed the main story down like it was the last slice of cake at home. I have 2 siblings. I think I finished it in a week or so despite it being only unlockable through leveling up, and if my memory serves me right, you need to be around lvl 75 to unlock all 4 episodes. As one can see, I was VERY invested in the story. It was just so....nice? I don't know how to exactly describe it but I was surprised by how likable everyone was. Of course I didn't hold such strong feelings for everyone back then as I do now but I was intrigued enough back then of nearly everyone, which is kind of rather rare in such types of games, no? At least for me it is, although I haven't played terribly a lot (Love Live, MLQC, Mystic Messenger).

I really like how the story actually continues through the events and how it alternated between stories exploring certain characters more (show events) and stories focusing on just them having fun. Getting to know everyone bit by bit and seeing how everyone grows closer to each other, not only within their respective troupes but the whole theater, makes me really all warm and fuzzy and it's found family, what more could you want?

Also, I really like Izumi, our dear MC 🥰 Even though she's supposed to be our self-insert, I found myself really enjoying reading her thoughts, observing her reactions to other characters' shenanigans (like her 'I do not see' to the members plan of faking their identity to bail Citron out lol) and just....her personality. Trying not to digress here but she has a lot more personality than other MCs in these joseimuke games and it makes her interactions with others not only bearable but even enjoyable. I'm not saying that this is what a perfect MC looks like or that she's superior to bland self-inserts. After all, it depends on the story, gameplay and other things. It's just a nice bonus I'm very grateful for. I mean, I got really emotional when Izumi performed with the other staff members all of the plays the actors have put out so far for the first anniversary. Her realizing she gained a new dream for her lost one just really took my heart, broke it in thousand pieces and then mended it again.

I also love A3! songs ❤ I did wonder how they would work in this franchise since it's not about idols but actors, though I guess there was nothing to worry about. I really like the duets because it's always a different duo and hearing them singing together, harmonizing with each other, complimenting each other, just fills me with undescribable joy. Of course the songs also slap pretty much every time. Even by limiting my options to 1 troupe, I still wouldn't be able to pick only one favourite (I like the majority of Winter's song tho, like Shoutai is just 🤌 and my sibling blasted Unmasked non-stop so I can't get it outta my head anymore). Gosh, I was so excited for 'Double Solitaire' since it would complete trilogy of the Hyodosakas singing together. I was really looking forward to getting all the songs and I was even saving up for Summer Troupe's 6th play.

If I had to describe the game A3! in one word, it'd be "charming". Coming to game itself, there are so many little quirks, that on their own aren't anything groundbreaking or big but together give the game its own flair. Live 2D is pretty common to see nowdays in games because it brings the characters to life through movements like 3D models. But I think A3! is able to illustrate it just as well, if not even better with their 2D sprites. Citron moonwalked by flipping the image over and sliding across the screen, Hisoka appeared out of nowhere by coming from above the screen, they do a little jump when they're happy, they go down a bit when they're sad. And that's just things with their whole sprite. The little drops when Tsuzuru finds himself in an awkward situation or is worried, the little note when Sakuya is happy, the hearts when Kazunari is lowkey flirting with Izumi, it's so cute! Or Omi's O.O face, Taichi's crying face (the usual one, not his face when he cried out of guilt of betraying Mankai), Yuki's done expression, H O M A R E AHA! They each have at least one personalized expression and also quote. Can you hear Kazunari's Yoropiko~☆, Citron's humming, Taichi's loud ass whining and scream of terror, Tsumugi's awkawrd laugh? It's brimming with life.

But also the UI (?how it looks) is joyful. The main screen's background cascading shapes changes depending from which Troupe your current character is from, the loading screen has sakura petals and a bird, the colors are very bright and saturated fitting to the overall color palette of the whole game, the little notebook during practice showing all the necessary infomation and a little sketch by the characters. It's just really charming.

As frustrating as it was, not getting halloween Tsuzuru after 110 pulls or Valentine Omi after 120, it was my first time ever understanding why gachas are called hellholes. Through my strong connections to the characters, their cards automatically appealed to me more. But the art is also so good???? Azuma is always looking flawless obviously but Omi's unbloomed Wolf card, where he is standing in the sunset looking at his camera or Kazunari's Shinobi card, unbloomed all concentrated on his panting and bloomed all shiny smiling like the fireworks in the background? Breathtaking everytime. I also appreciate it not needing multiple copies to unlock the whole backstage story.

I think I'm slowly running out of things to say, which might be good for whoever managed to come this far. I have to say though, A3! helped me through the pandemic. Being a perfect distraction to the world's chaos and more importantly my crushing schoolwork and worries for personal future. I'm a very pessimistic person but seeing the characters overcoming their hardships through the help of their to-be "family" and just being happy doing trouble, gave me a little hope and light for a bit every day. I came to cherish everyone, even those I like the least. I haven't felt like this since Mystic Messenger, which was also a game, that helped me through a difficult time. I can only wish to a shooting star, that it's not the end for the EN Server yet. While yes, the JP server is thriving and I could just switch to reading fantranslation, through my experience, my enjoyment considerably sinks playing like that and I wish to fully enjoy A3!.

Names of their characters before transformation are literally the name of their voice actors so (lol) For Tenma and Tasuku, since their character names are Takuya, I’m putting their real names so you can differentiate who’s talking. Omi and Masumi play Bear and Fly respectivily but I’ll explain a little bit more about their names on T/N. 

Hiro: It's about time for us to perform. Are you ready?

Omi: Yes!

Tenma: Since our rehearsal went smoothly, let's give it our all during the actual show as well.

Banri: Of course  we will.

Izumi: Looks like we have a lot of audience today.

Now, getting to Omi and Masumi’s characters... First Omi’s character Bear is based on Kumagai Kentarou’s nickname which is Kuma, and as you may already know, Kuma is Bear in Japanese. Moving on to Masumi’s character Fly, I actually find two theories about this, with the first one being the fact that Fly is written as Furai in Japanese and it might be a twist of Shirai Yusuke’s name. Second, it’s actually referring to Shirai acting out as Fly during one of the past Boueibu stream that you can watch here. (I’m actually more convinced in the second one www.)

Kazunari was dragging an excited Misumi and a scowling Masumi to a public bath.

“Come on! The others are already waiting!”

“Will there be triangles, Kazu-kun?”

“Yes there is! The bathtub in this bath was extraordinary! They are in triangle shapes!”

“Triangles~triangles~”

“I don’t want to go there..unless Izumi is inside too”

“You can’t take a bath with a girl too!”

Kazunari sighed.

He has no problem being Misumi’s courrier. Masumi on the other hand was much much more a problem. Ever since the day Izumi actually introduced Tetsuro, the backstage staff, as her boyfriend, Masumi was in a depressed state.

Unexpectedly, Sakyo the residence yakuza was also heart broken. In fact, he was more depressed than Masumi. But he was better now in his new relationship with Omi. The college student had confessed to having fallen in love with the older since the first time they met.

After Tsuzuru brought Masumi’s problem in surface, Taichi have the idea of bathing together. He talked about the Autumn Troupe’s day of bathing together and how it deepen their relationship.

Since the dorm’s bath was not enough to contain 20 males, they decided to rent a public bath for two hours, courtesy of Summer Troupe biggest funder.

Although Masumi was a pain in the arse, Kazunari couldn’t help but be happy. A long time ago he was still an insecure child, afraid of being left by his friends. Now here he was, being his extra self and still considered as part of the Mankai Family.

Outside their work, nobody could guess the bond between actors. They could pretend to be friend, family, lovers on stage. Not many could have real family inside and outside the stage, unlike them in Mankai Family.

“Oi, blondie..what are you stopping for?”

Kazunari bursted out of his bubble to face Masumi.

“Kazu okay? Here, have a triangle”

Misumi asked, his teal orbs full of worry, and handed him an onigiri.

“You will be happier with triangle~”

“Who would be happy, you idiot”

Kazunari smiled. Definitely noticable by his friends.

“See? Kazu loves triangle~”

Masumi clicked his tongue in annoyance.

“Whatever..let’s just get this over with. Are you coming?”

Izumi: Haha...I feel you. Madoka: This is delicious. Reni: Yeah, the sauce's sourness works really well. Tsuzuru: Even though I'm eating something definitely fine, it tastes bland... Tsuzuru: Ah, also, the play that was featured on the programme, I went to see it before with Ikaruga-san, and the composition of it was incredibly interesting. Reni: That was Madoka's idea. Reni: That was all of them. Tsuzuru: ...As I thought, everyone's really good. Izumi: They all have the basics down, the trainees included. A wide variety of people. Reni: ....This was the only task planned, but I will make a sudden addition. Reni: Improvise for your respective role and demonstrate original lines. Izumi: Eh!? Tsuzuru: That, that's sudden. Troupe member A: Improvise... Troupe member B: Original, huh?.... Madoka: This might be difficult even if they're told to do it for the role, since only the plot has been decided so far. Tsuzuru: That's true... Troupe member A: Something like improv is rare, isn't it?.... Troupe member B: Yeah, up until now, we've been told to stay faithful to the lines in the screenplay.... Izumi: (Looks like Kamikizaka-san hasn't really asked them for improvisation very often.) Izumi: (If I remember right, what GOD Troupe conveyed during the act-off was the appearance of pursuing the actual ideals inside Kamikizaka-san with all of its troupe members...) Wow I’m feeling nostalgic~! The theme for last year’s event was ‘family’ and we each played a role of one of six brothers as we served the customers.

That’s right! However last year they announced the theme the day of, but this year they gave us the theme ahead of time.
