We are excited about our collaboration with the Frankenthaler Foundation to frame works for "Helen Frankenthaler: Painterly Constellations," currently at @kunsthalle.krems in Krems an der Donau, Austria. The exhibition features 74 works on paper alongside a selection of paintings from the individual phases in Frankenthaler’s artistic career. Bark designer Eric Knutzon has worked with the @helenfrankenthalerfoundation over the years to create custom maple frames for the artist’s groundbreaking pieces. Our goal for every frame is impeccable craftsmanship -- a key element of this is attention to detail. Oftentimes, our millers cull lumber specifically for figure that will compliment the artwork, and each side of the frame as a whole. Here, details of a frame we designed for a work by Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954), part of an Ellsworth Kelly-curated exhibition at Mount Holyoke. The frames were milled in maple, hand finished in a pale white rub, and glazed in OP3. Matisse's ink on paper drawings were matted in 100% cotton rag board, 8-ply Rising Warm White island window mats, with matching fillets. (2/2) Here, the blue drawing, by New York-based artist @heatherbenjamin_ , in its Bark frame. Our client was thrilled with the final result, and how the frame complimented the drawing. “For me, the lines and details in the drawing were so delicately dancing around the page, I felt that the almost identical blue SINTRA board, against the white of the maple, really helped the lines pop, while providing a matching border without looking too bold," she said. (1/2) A few months back, we framed this woven textile (made by an unknown artist) for a collector client. Bark Frameworks Shop Manager, Brenda Cominale takes us through her process attaching the work to its backing: "I centered the textile on 100% cotton rag board. After making two small holes under each side center edge (top, bottom, right, left), I used heavy duty thread -- selected by color to match the textile -- to fix the piece to its backing. The thread was brought in through the back of the board and up through the textile -- between textile lines -- and then back down through the board again. After attaching each center/side to the backing board, I did the same at the corners. The goal was to maintain the natural integrity of the textile while keeping it fixed in place, even if it was not perfectly squared.
