Yet I look at their regular lineup from last year, and … yes, I have a hard time thinking Marcell Ozuna is hitting 40 homers with a .905 OPS again, but otherwise, did anyone really overperform by that much? No, right? Even Ronald Acuña Jr., the defending NL MVP, had a season that not only wasn’t out of line with his career (steals aside) but could still be improved upon in 2024. Now, realize that Spencer Strider’s new curveball has the potential to make him even filthier (that’s a compliment), and that Chris Sale has looked healthier and better this spring than he has in years. Remember, too, that last year they only got 14 starts out of Max Fried, who’s now gearing up for a contract push.

aroldis chapman, trevor bauer, marcell ozuna (all have been suspended for DV or rape), josh donaldson (just all-around douchy guy who likes to dabble in racism during games. he called tim anderson “jackie” on the field during a game this season and then tried to claim afterward that it was in a friendly joking way. lol no. and tim certainly didn’t think so either), joey bart (he’s in the minors rn but i’m sure he’ll find his way back up at some point 😒. he’s a MAGA bro in a big big way. which obviously isn’t out of the ordinary in professional sports but he favorited and shared and then deleted tweets about trump that were particularly gross. he also just fucking bugs me when he’s playing bc he looks like he’d rather be ANYWHERE else in the world. like dude, you’re living your supposed dream, try not to look like you just found out your childhood dog died)

.484: The Braves easily lead the Majors with this mark in slugging percentage. They became the first AL/NL club to ever produce a .500 slugging percentage last year, so this might not be too surprising. But it’s pretty impressive when you account for the fact that Acuña -- last year’s National League MVP -- has just one homer and a total of five extra-base hits. This is a very deep and talented lineup.

100? Spencer Strider made one healthy start before suffering a season-ending elbow injury, and Sean Murphy has been on the injured list since straining his oblique on Opening Day. Fried has struggled and Acuña hasn’t yet gotten on a roll. But it still feels like the Braves could produce a third straight 100-win season.

Their 12-5 record is just one game behind where they were at this point last year. They were 7-10 through the first 17 games of 2022. A baseball season has more drama and plot twists than the Kardashians.
