It's just that what you have to understand about animorphs is that the most important thing about animorphs barely happens in animorphs. The most important moment in animorphs is when marco's dad says that in the year before his wife died he and his wife stopped fighting, their relationship became smooth sailing, it was like all the little things that any couple has trouble with just disappeared, and marco (maybe 14? 15? at this point?) listens to him say this and understands with cold certainty that what actually disappeared a year before his mother's ''death'' was his mother. This declaration from his father gives Marco a timeline for a familial trauma he had never before been able to fully parse, which is the precise moment in his life when his mother's body was taken over by a brain controlling slug from outer space--hey. hey. stay with me. look at me. look at my eyes. don't worry about the alien slug. just keep reading. this is a chilling and deeply compelling statement about patriarchy and colonialism and you have to not worry about the slug--anyway Eva Animorphs (an immigrant woman of color) lost all control of her life and voice and body and that was, in reality, the moment that Marco lost his mother to a colonial power, the moment he lost his childhood, the moment he and his mother lost their home, which even after winning the war they will never return to, but his father never understood that moment as anything but a mysterious sudden increase in harmony in his household. Because his wife stopped arguing with him.

Rachel wasnt my favorite by any means but I think I was entertained by her arc the most. There aren't nearly enough good-to-ruthless pipelines for protags.

every character in animorphs is actually fascinating and fucked up in their own, realistic way

Jake: a confident kid who is put into a leadership position. He constantly has to make choices that determine whether he and his friends live or die. So he matures faster and loses his childhood. Then he experiences a loss and just completely breaks down.

Marco: a kid who always used humor to deflect bad situations, slowly driving himself insane because those bad situations are now near constant. Worried he’s going to snap one day and he probably already has. Convincing himself hes “ruthless” to cover up that he’s so scared about what he’s doing.

Rachel: a fun fashionista who was always kinda competitive and anger-prone who now finds herself addicted to the war she’s been forced to fight in. Someone who’s worried, not because killing is too hard, but because it’s too easy. She knows what she brings to the group, she brings an ability to kill that the others take advantage of her for. It’s a two way relationship; they need her when they want someone to die but it not to weigh on their consciousness, and she needs them to assure her that she’s still human, still sane.

Cassie: a pacifist until she’s not. An animal activist who has to choose between her morals and her species near constantly. Who still tries to cling onto her moral code because if she lets go she might lose herself.

Tobias: an already messed up guy who never felt wanted, now trapped in a body that is not his. He’s slowly losing elements of his humanity. He constantly feels like he’s not enough and that he can’t turn to his friends for help bc he thinks they’ll leave him.

Ax: a kid in a strange land who just lost his brother and is honor-bound to avenge him. He has such high opinions of his species and has to continuously have that worldview shattered. All his friends turn to him for knowledge and he doesn’t know enough to satisfy them. He has to choose between his loyalty to his culture and his loyalty to his new friends.

Have you ever considered one (probably Marco lol) or multiple of the animorphs post war on some kind of celebrity tv show (ie game shows for charity or something like dancing with the stars)?

Oh man, if you throw Marco's win-at-all-costs attitude in with his natural trollishness, and then you take into account the media landscape of the naughts... Hoo boy.

Survivor: In a rare unanimous outcome, Marco is voted off by complete consensus after the third incident where he gets his team disqualified from a challenge by turning into a chimpanzee to complete an obstacle course.

The Dating Game: Marco is supposed to be the third contestant to introduce himself to the bachelorette. Instead, he comes out of his booth directly after the second contestant is done speaking, declares "Well, that's me persuaded!" pulls out his bouquet, and presents it to the man next to him: "Wanna go on a date, handsome?" The second contestant, blushing but looking flattered, takes Marco's hand in his; they walk off the set together.

Crossfire: After public statements about "not too sure on this climate change," Marco is invited to oppose an ecologist as they debate the reality of global warming. During the episode Marco remains silent as the scientist presents her arguments, even when the host prompts him repeatedly to argue. The host starts arguing with the scientist, only to have Marco shush him and go "I'm trying to listen!" After filming 3 hours' footage, during which the climate scientist spoke for 2 hours 50 minutes, Marco goes "Gotta bounce — have fun editing that!" and disappears into an air vent.

The Apprentice: Honestly, we're not sure what happened here? The host, like, disappeared, directly after the end of the season Marco appeared in. He's not dead, we don't think — I guess he moved to Uzbekistan? But no one's heard from him since he donated all his real estate holdings to the American Cancer Society and fled the country. Go figure.

Animorphs 5 gave us so much. They fit so much into that tiny little book. Two kids getting almost boiled alive for dinner in a regular human kitchen in a scene that had sort of nothing to do with the plot. Ax going completely insane at radio shack and almost dooming the Earth by virtue of total inability to behave normally in public for ten seconds. A disillusioned teenager making a desperate attempt to abnegate his duty for what would turn out to be the last time in his fucking life, then realizing twenty minutes later that he's incapable of that. A gaggle of teens experiencing ego death and getting ripped to pieces by completely normal ants before blindly bursting out of the suffocating earth and running home in leotards, only for one of them to find an ant pincer in his hip in the shower later and have a brief but thorough nervous breakdown in his bathroom. The same gaggle of teens catching a glimpse of their home planet from the window of a spaceship sent to consume that planet, struck by its beauty and by the weight of the duty of care for it that's been placed on their shoulders, moments before they are brought to believe they have failed that duty irrevocably and will die before they reach their home again. And all of that was before Eva came back from the dead.
