January 18, 2024 - Pearled Treerunner (Margarornis squamiger) Found in the Andes in parts of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and possibly Argentina, these birds in the ovenbird family live in mountain forests. They eat arthropods, picking them from moss and other surfaces, foraging alone, in pairs, or in small flocks, often with other species. Likely monogamous, they build ball-shaped nests with side entrances from moss under tree limbs or rocks.

Pearled Treerunner - Margarornis squamiger
The Pearled Treerunner, Margarornis squamiger (Passeriformes - Furnariidae), is a handsome little bird of Andean cloud forest. It is almost always observed in mixed flocks, clambering along moss-covered branches and gleaning arthropods along the way. This species superficially resembles some foliage-gleaners, but its smaller size, the contrast between rufous upperparts and gray-brown head and underparts, and the striking scalloped pattern below are distinctive. Its nest is a ball of moss hidden under a rock or branch.
