Okay, so according to Massimo Mazzotti, the "Catholic Enlightenment" refers to an 18th century movement that acted as a middle ground between the competing Jesuit and Jansenist intellectual trends of the time, achieving "maximum visibility in the 1740s, when it was backed by learned cardinals, literary periodicals, and the pontiff Benedict XIV." It is marked by a series of characteristics that include:
a pointed anti-Baroque leaning when it came to devotions; there is a critique of emotional devotions that emphasize the senses and the imagination, preferring devotions that focused on abstracted theological truth over expressive ritual symbol.
a preference for the modern metaphysical philosophies of Descartes, Newton, and Malebranche over the scholastic theologies taught at Jesuit schools.
a view that the practicing of religion should result in the transformation of society.
a belief that the Catholic Church should emphasize simplicity of doctrine and its resonance with scientific theory.
Mazzotti makes reference to several figures who belong to this general trend in Catholic intellectual thought, including: Maria Gaetana Agnesi, whose mathematical writings focused on analytical rather than applied calculus, viewing it as a way of exercising the abstract intellect. In her mystical writings, Agnesi likewise deemphasized visionary activity and preferred a type of contemplation that moved from personal love of Christ to meditation on the Trinity. Nicolas Malebranche, an Oratorian priest who sought to synthesize Cartesian philosophy with Catholic theology, much as Aquinas had done with Aristotelianism. Among the ideas he emphasized was "capacity of attention," a rapt state of mind involving focused concentration on an object of contemplation. Giuseppe Petrini, an artist who depicted the "capacity for attention" in his paintings of both historical saints and contemporary scientists during moments of their lives where they attained "both true knowledge and divine enlightenment." Lodovico Antonio Muratori, a priest and historian known for discovering the oldest known list delineating the canon of the New Testament, described as "the Light of Italian science" by Pope Benedict XIV, and also a critic of the "disorderly devotions" of the Baroque period. Pope Benedict XIV, who sought to place "the Catholic Church once again at the center of the European philosophical debate," and whose desire for this even allowed him to extend invitations to women to act as professors and lecturers at universities.

“…It’s been a lot of fun and particularly after so many years after his death that he is still admired not for his music, not only for his music, but for his general demeanor about life because it’s only what people would read about and seen pictures up and that it’s just he lives on just really and truly. I look at what he was like and anyway what he was and this brings a you know great smile to my face.”

Gibson and Rock Icon Gene Simmons Enter Joint Venture to Launch G²
Tumblr media
Rock Icon Gene Simmons. Credit Gibson.
(NASHVILLE, TN)  Gibson, the iconic American guitar brand, has entered into a joint venture with Gene Simmons, international rock legend and co-founder of KISS, America’s #1 gold record award-winning group of all time, in all categories (RIAA), to create G². G², from Gene to Gibson, will introduce new collections of right and left-handed electric guitars and basses across Gibson’s Gibson, Epiphone and Kramer brands, and develop new entertainment content that will be streamed to millions of fans worldwide on multiple online and social platforms.
To kick off the collaboration, G² will release the new G² Thunderbird Bass later this year. The G² Thunderbird Bass, which will be available in ebony with silver appointments and ebony with blood red, made its worldwide debut on stage with Simmons recently during KISS’ epic New Year’s Eve concert in Dubai.
“I have been designing and trademarking bass guitars for decades, and when I heard Gibson’s vision and learned about their creative process, it just made sense for us to join forces to take things to the next level,” said Simmons. “Gibson is an outstanding company and has earned its place as a leading guitar brand with fans around the world. These guitars and basses will all be handmade, with a sound that is off the charts. The design is so beautiful and collectible that they are simply works of art.”
Following the launch of the G² Thunderbird Bass, G² has plans for a Flying V bass and Flying V guitar.
“Gene is not only one of the most celebrated musicians and rock stars of all time. He is also an entrepreneur, record producer, actor and overall creative person. His brain is always working, and I love that about him,” said Cesar Gueikian of Gibson Brands. “When we first connected, we immediately engaged in the most interesting conversations about guitars, entertainment, and business. Our shared vision compelled us to explore a partnership that would include developing instruments and creating a new platform to entertain and inspire new generations of Gibson and Gene Simmons fans to create music. Expect epic things.”

You know, that company that builds some guitars in my town of Nashville and over in Montana has now become quite the behemoth.Gibson Brands, registered to the corporate tax haven state of Delaware, since around 2018 has for all intents and purposes been owned by KKR. KKR is the world's 5th largest Private Equity firm. For those unfamiliar, through a policy called quantitative easing (which is up to a 7 trillion dollar balance), Private Equity firms are considered by many like Billionaire financier Stanley Drunkenmiller to be the greatest subsidy to the rich ever in large part thanks to QE.Of course, Gibson being a good lil' faux Tennessee company still gets now undisclosed 6 figure property tax subsidies in it's "home town." And, KKR, well all their lil' ole companies have managed up to 80 million in state subsidies over the past years along with some much needed coronavirus relief.Well, it might be good to know if you're into some of those other non-Gibson guitars how Gibson feels it needs to protect itself from the evil thieving competition. Years ago Gibson finally lost their long battle with PRS guitars over IP infringement. And, they lost EU trademark for the Flying V and Firebird. Alongside, they've attempted to take full trademark control of the double cut semi-hollow body shape. A case that's still pending. After KKR took over and the reigns were shook up one Mark Agnesi was instructed to launch the now infamous "Play Authentic" video warning others that Gibson was coming after them for IP theft. KKR wasn't joking.Gibson has since:Launched a lawsuit against Dean Guitars.Sent cease/desist and will be litigating a lawsuit against small builder Kiesel Guitars.Despite a long standing Settlement Agreement Gibson sent cease/desist letters to Heritage guitars and in the court filings "threatened to outspend Heritage if they didn't comply with ceasing operations" forcing Heritage to take legal action against Gibson.Satellite Amps, who filed & were granted trademark for the decades plus dead and forgotten Epi Coronet design in 2016, after four years of building the Coronet have been sent cease/desist notification likely to end up in court if Satellite does not give up the trademark. And, Texas based Collings Guitars will now have to battle with Gibson as Gibson alleges the Collings headstock will apparently confuse buyers into thinking it's a Gibson guitar. All of these cases, including the Coronet case where Gibson let go the trademark, have no more substance to them than the old PRS case Gibson lost after a long battle of financial fatigue for the PRS brand. Gibson has become a threat to guitar builders at large now even claiming that any rectangular based headstock can be an infringement, a battle small companies can't afford.Keep in mind, KKR, I mean Gibson, is just following the trend of using IP trolling to raise investment perception.I wish they'd stick to beating the competition by bettering themselves first but that would require moral aptitude, a behavior long since lost in upper management. I'll take my downvotes, but let it be known this does not reflect my love of the guitars themselves. via /r/Guitar

Celebrating women in science
Tumblr media
History hasn’t always been kind to women. They were denied education. Those that were ‘lucky’ enough to be informally educated couldn’t enter university seminars; those that were formally educated weren’t considered equal to their male peers. Many bold women were subdued, or worse–burned ‘for being witches’! Having an opinion was blasphemous, let alone having an intellectual and a scientific one at that. Despite such dark times, many women managed to rise above society’s idea of what they’re capable of.
For centuries, womankind has had to strive doubly hard to make itself heard and accepted. Some women not only managed to be heard and accepted, but also respected. If making a mark in a male-dominated world was hard, then stepping into the field of science was no less than entering the dragon’s lair, right until the early 20th century. And yet, many commendable women did just that, contributing significantly to the way the world works today. Soulveda commemorates these scientists on the occasion of International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Hedy Lamarr
This 20th-century woman wasn’t just a pretty actress; she was an inventor. Self-taught though she was, Lamarr was known to dabble in technology; she used to call it ‘tinkering hobbies’. Improvising traffic stoplight and modifying the wing design to make planes fly faster were among the things she ‘tinkered’ with. During the World War II in 1942, Lamarr, with the help of her friend and pianist George Antheil, actually developed a secret communication system for the US government. While the US Navy couldn’t use inventions made outside of the military, Lamarr’s technology eventually got incorporated into Bluetooth, wi-fi and CDMA.
Anandi Gopalrao Joshi
Joshi was the first Indian woman to ever graduate with a degree in medicine from the United States. People also say that she was the first Indian woman to even set foot on American soil. What’s remarkable about Joshi was that she earned a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in 1886, when most girls in India weren’t formally educated. Unfortunately, Joshi died of tuberculosis in 1887, before she could practise medicine and be a physician.
The Second World War saw many English women choosing more public lives, many with professions. One such smart young woman was Joan Clarke, a cryptanalyst and numismatist…
Émilie du Châtelet
This early 18th-century French physicist was the first scientist to appreciate the significance of kinetic energy, as opposed to momentum. She translated Isaac Newton’s Principia from Latin to French and wrote a compelling commentary with it. She made an additional postulate on conservation law of kinetic energy, thereby contributing to Newtonian Mechanics. So profound was her contribution that she was widely recognised and respected amongst the intellectual circles of her time.
Joan Clarke
The Second World War saw many English women choosing more public lives, many with professions. One such smart young woman was Joan Clarke, a cryptanalyst and numismatist for the English government. Cryptology was largely male-dominated at the time, but as a code-breaker at Bletchley Park during the war, Clarke decrypted Nazi Germany’s secret communications. Her work earned her several awards and citations; she was even appointed as a member of the Order of the British Empire, an order of chivalry.
Laura Bassi
Bassi, an 18th century Italian physicist and academic, earned a doctoral degree from the University of Bologna in 1732. At the time, it was only the second degree ever formally bestowed on a woman by a university. She is also said to have been the first woman to have been formally educated in the field of science. Like Émilie du Châtelet, Bassi too was instrumental in spreading the study of Newtonian Mechanics far and wide in Italy.
Maria Margarethe Kirch
Kirch was a renowned German astronomer in the late 17th century and early 18th century. She was the first woman to ever discover a previously unknown comet C/1702 H1, in 1702. Kirch was also instrumental in creating calendars and almanacs that were helpful in sea navigation. As her husband Gottfried Kirch’s study partner, Maria Kirch was on par with other astronomers of her time, if not better. Yet, upon her husband’s death, she wasn’t allowed to take his place as an astronomer at the Royal Academy of Sciences. When the academy’s chosen male alternative failed miserably at his duties, Maria Kirch was hired in his stead. Her work eventually won her the Gold medal of Royal Academy of Sciences, Berlin, in 1709.
Ada Lovelace is credited with being the first computer programmer and also the first to understand the ‘computing machine’ and its potential applications.
Maria Gaetana Agnesi
This 18th-century Italian mathematician was the first woman to be appointed as a mathematics professor at a university. She was also the first to write a mathematics handbook that discussed both integral and differential calculus. Known as the first woman to ever have achieved such a repute in the field of mathematics, Agnesi has an asteroid, a Venusian crater and a mathematical curve named after her.
Eva Ekeblad
Ekebald was an 18th-century Swedish agronomist, who’s credited with discovering a method to make alcohol and flour from potatoes. Her discovery was instrumental in reducing Sweden’s famine in 1746. With that, she became the first ever female honorary member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1748. Ekebald also discovered how to bleach cotton textile and yarn with soap. She also found a way to use potato flour in cosmetics as a replacement for other harmful chemicals.
Ada Lovelace
Augusta Ada King-Noel, Countess of Lovelace, better known as Ada Lovelace, was a 19th-century English mathematician and writer. Lovelace, who called herself an ‘analyst’, and often described her approach as ‘poetical science’, made notes on Charles Babbage’s early version of a computing machine. In her notes, she made observations of how the society might relate to such technology as a ‘collaborative tool’. She is credited with being the first computer programmer and also the first to understand the ‘computing machine’ and its potential applications. Without her observations and explanations, Babbage’s work might never have received any attention. Lovelace even gave his ‘Analytical Engine’ an algorithm to compute Bernoulli numbers.
Lise Meitner
Meitner was a 20th-century Austrian-Swedish nuclear physicist who led a group of scientists responsible for discovering the nuclear fission of uranium. This discovery later became the basis for the nuclear weapons developed by the US during World War II. The 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the nuclear fission discovery went only to her colleague and co-head Otto Hahn, despite Meitner’s tremendous contribution. However, she did win various other awards and honours later in life. Meitner was also the first woman to be hired as a physics professor by a university in Germany.
