Mark Nauseef/Tony Buck — Mongrels (Relative Pitch)
Tumblr media
Some discs assuage the ear even as senses are overloaded. So lush are the textures, so vivid is the recording and so completely is every tone allowed to sing that it’s as if a balm is applied. Mark Nauseef and Tony Buck achieve all this and more on this grittily transcultural endeavor.
Despite its title, Mongrels never basks in any implied complexities. The opening of “Seven Metals” relays the palimpsestic tales of crystal and wire in serial communion that typify much of the music on offer, often swirling in electronic froth. Guitars and percussion turn out to be grist for imaginative sonic mills. Both musicians are masters of colored silence, as “Lake Lushish”’s poignantly tintinnabulating opening phrases confirm, veering as they do between the calm affrontery of a single gong and the morphing tolling groans of processed process in temporary distillation. As all manner of harmonics collude, the processed episodes take over, forcing inhabitation of several simultaneous environmental spaces. Deeper listening exposes an underworld of sliding overtones, upper-registral clarity in seemingly limitless acoustical shades and variations.
At certain points, the processing becomes an integral part of the message. Listen as the interregistral drones and collected dregs informing each moment of the ironically titled “As Far as We Don’t Know” to hear the echoes, reechoes and joint statement of guitar and percussion in orchestral overlap. The piece also contains one of the album’s finest moments. At 2:07, most of the sound fades to a near background leaving only one of those myriad drones and its rhythmic ghost. It flutters in the left channel just before another vast guitar strum obliterates it, but it encapsulates all the beauty and subtlety the album has to offer. The temptation to make a Necks comparison seems justified by such a moment, a type in which that venerable trio often engages. Time passes but also hangs in a sort of balance, rhythm never eclipsing drone which in turn offers that throbbing reiteration in a kind of relief. It is as if all of the music gathered itself together in that gorgeously almost-frozen instant, and the rest is liquification in consequent.

"¿Sabes? ¡Phil Lynott murió!". ¡Pero hombre, como no lo voy a saber! un 4 de enero de 1986. "Bad Is Bad", inédita de 1978 con Gary Moore y Scott Gorham (guitarras), Mark Nauseef (batería), Huey Lewis (armónica) y Phil (bajo y voz) a pleno trote rhythm and blues. Lewis escribió "Bad is Bad" a finales de los setenta mientras trabajaba con Thin Lizzy. A Lynott le gustó tanto la canción que la interpretó en algunos de sus conciertos a un ritmo más rápido. Huey Lewis and The News incluyeron "Bad Is Bad" en su tercer LP, "Sports" (1983).

34 - QUE POURRAIT BIEN RACONTER CE PROJET ?
Et s’il s’agissait d’un livre abordant les rapports entre jazz et rock (et vice-versa) d’une manière enfin inédite ?

You're right, Morris Pert has been present on many intriguing albums, so his appearance on Time Square by Eberhard Schoener shouldn't be a shock. What could surprise us might be the fact the record still sounds vital despite being an LP of electronic music from the early 80's that sounds like something his peers would have done during the late 70's. Then again, Mr. Schoener was one of the pioneering users of Moog, which meant he really had no rules to follow, he had to rely on himself to get through his own way of the idiom. Moreover, Time Square, one of the platters of his with Mr. Pert's percussion, bristles with energy, this is not sterile electronic music. Actually, we could called this a piece of progressive rock in the machine disguise.

Born in Yugoslavia, Miroslav Tadić is an internationally acclaimed guitarist, composer, improviser, and educator residing in California, USA. Artist extraordinaire, Tadić never stops pushing the boundaries of music through his adaptation of sound techniques on both acoustic and electric guitar. In pursuit of his dream, Miroslav Tadić came to the US in 1979. Macedonian music became the bridge betweenTadić and his roots. Infusing influences from jazz, rock, avant-garde music, and other musical traditions with eastern European folkloric music, his versatile improvisation approach has introduced countless musicians and listeners alike to the fascination of Macedonia. In the past 38 years, the virtuoso guitarist has devoted his time to teaching at California Institute of the Arts. Having graduated from the same school at the age of 25, Tadić started to co-build the guitar program with his teacher, Stuart Fox. During his course at CalArts, Tadić encountered percussionist Mark Nauseef, who turned out to be crucial in his music career.

🎼 00511 「Still In Love With You (それでも君を)」。
